This is an essay which I had to write after reading the book for my grade 11 English class The actions performed by a person are the reflections of their beliefs and values -- two integral components of human nature which are often shaped by external factors such as education, religion, and a general upbringing. In the novel The Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the author explores the inherent nature of humans when they are removed from the anchor of civilization and structure. The characters of Ralph and Jack represent the duality and balance between morality and savagery; both natural responses to an extremely traumatic situation. When an individual is confronted by an explicit circumstance which requires a choice between self-preservation and moral sacrifice, it often results in exposure to fear-inducing events which initiate the deterioration of sanity. As a result, one must establish their own sense of morality based on prior perceptions and understanding. A societal structure which is safe and guarantees survival allows one to assume they operate in morality -- it deceives them into believing that a moral compass is guiding their actions and beliefs. However, when this component is collectively collapsing on a global scale -- a point of contention between morality and fear is formed. In the narrative of The Lord of the Flies, the major themes are founded on a situation similar to this. The initial setting is described as “an island [] a reef out in the sea. Perhaps there aren’t any grown ups anywhere” (Golding, 2). The characters are described as young children who were stranded on a deserted island due to a plane crash. The two boys immediately noticed the absence of adults -- a symbol of the lack of authority and control on this island. This absence of reliability and safety serves as a catalyst for the actions performed by many of the characters. Through a series of events, a tribe with laws and order was created -- a desperate attempt to replicate the previous civilization to which they belonged; a civilization that was currently engaging in a global world war. The author illustrated this by assigning deep meaning to a pearly-white conch which symbolized structure, order, and unity. A symbol which was ultimately used to showcase the deterioration of a once civilized society when it was shattered into pieces. Golding established the contrast between priorities for different characters -- evidenced by the different approaches taken by Simon and Ralph. Simon was written as a kind-hearted and deeply sophisticated character; one who would assist the younger children with plucking low-hanging fruits -- whereas other boys his age were shooting rocks at the children. This character found an isolated location within the island where he would calmly observe butterflies and the different types of vegetation, representing his individuality. Furthermore, Simon’s internal monologue when hallucinating about the talking pig head featured the name of the novel itself - signifying the significance of his retrospective intellect. Through a diligent investigation, Simon discovered the truth behind the “beast” which had terrorized the whole island. Without any hesitation, he immediately attempted to share his knowledge to ease the tensions felt by others, however he was brutally mauled to death. While being torn to shreds, he kept repeating “the beast” which serves as an epitome of self-sacrifice. Towards the end of the novel, Ralph was faced with a similar situation in which the other boys were attacking him. However, Ralph took drastic measures to assure his survival which symbolized self-preservation. The author described both of the boys as equally kind, however their differences were figurative symbols of the results which come from choosing either self-preservation or moral sacrifice Fear is a powerful motivator behind the actions of a person -- it is the body’s natural instinct to protect itself from any impending danger. In the narrative of the Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the disintegration of Ralph’s initial attempt at trying to establish order and the creation of Jack’s savage and inhumane tribe symbolizes the shift in one’s sanity. During the first few days after the conch was discovered, a plan for rescue was cemented and all the boys were assigned roles to keep them occupied and distracted from all the fears of the island. However, the mention of a “beastie” resulted in widespread panic which was settled when the boys reassured themselves. Ralph and Jack -- two of the most influential characters in the novel both stated “such a creature is only found in countries like Africa and India”; a desperate attempt to cope with the fear. After the speculations of a possible beast, each young boy visualized their observations to be proof of the beast. This is evidenced when Sam and Eric observed the dead soldier as a beast moving in the darkness -- they saw what they wanted to believe. They wanted to confirm the existence of a beast to confirm the doubts of the whole tribe. This fresh confirmation by two reliable sources was the catalyst for the division amongst the boys. Boys who were once rational and civilized become “savages” and unaware of their own inhumane acts -- evidenced by their behavior during pig hunts and ritual chants. In order to cope with the fear, they formed a collective identity; characterized by the face paint and chants “Kill the pig, split his throat, spill his blood”. This disturbing ideology was the coping mechanism of the young boys -- their attempt to retain any drop of sanity while social order slowly collapsed. In conclusion, the interplay between morality and fear is dependent upon the conditioning of the individual and the encounters they face while determining a plan of action. The author reinforces this concept by describing the loss of innocence and sanity due to the division amongst the boys, illustrating the differences between Simon and Ralph, and by the symbolic shattering of the conch.

6:18:33 the pigs head is now a skull Ralph hits the skull and it breaks into 2 pieces
6:22:32 everyone on the island except Ralph is now a Savage
4:29:39 piggy was everywhere
6:44:14 piggy was the scene talker
5:54:04 a naval officer arrives
6:58:47 I don't think I will ever forget this line.
6:08:05 is something me and my friends were arguing about whether the book says it. This confirms it.
This is gonna make reading it faster. Thanks.

Ausmawwww (my brain: asthma)
he isn't saying "asthma" , he is saying ass-mar.
yea the book says ass-mar (except when piggy says it, he says asthma)
Sucks to your ass-mar!
Where the hell are the flies in this book
Chapter seven and eight the spilled guts of the pig and the dead guy with the parachute
He actually refers to the pigs head as lord of the flies.
@@vincearini1191that makes no sense why is the head called lord of the flies when flies have nothing to do with the book?
@@Puffercorn that makes no sense why is the head called lord of the flies when flies have nothing to do with the book?
@gamingwithkai7518 Why don't you try actually reading it or listening to it. The pigs had was covered in flies as well as the intrails. And the boy kept referring to it as the lord of the flies. How do you not get this or are you just trying to start arguments?
Ralph should have killed Jack while he was asleep after the Simon incident
But then he would have become just like him.
@@Godzillaman Not quite, it's in self-defence. Sometimes it's either fight or die
@@SuperBartles but it wouldn't have been self-defense if Ralph killed him while he was sleeping.
@@Godzillaman Do you think so? Perhaps not self defence against an immediate danger, but if he’s sure someone wants to kill him, and they’ve killed 2 others...
It’s a different context, kiling for self-preservation as opposed to killing for the sake of it: therefore he would not be the same as Jack
Can you spoil it for me
I actually feel so bad for piggy tho

What does he mean by "the fire was right out"? He says it at least 3 times. What does "right out" mean? Why not say "the fire was out"? Is it some British thing?
Right out means it went out instantly. It's local to England I think
i interpreted it as completely out, without chance of relighting easily
if the fire "went right out" that would mean it went out instantly
i think its just improper English because they're kids
not sure

what school do u go 2
@@Cowflakes why would i tell u that lol
@@evasmojang bc my school is using this exact audio book
@@Cowflakes Oh, lol. We aren't actually using the audiobook, we are just reading the physical one and I missed some classes so I used this audiobook instead of reading it
@@evasmojang lmao smart
This is FAR better than the audible version (it's read by the author).
How ironic
really? does golding do the voices?
@enthusiasticallydry yes! And it's the classic stereotype of an old man telling a story. Granted, I didn't listen for long before changing

even the narrator calling him piggy smh
The book never gives the reader his name. Therefore there is nothing better to call him.
ironic considering piggy took the care to keep track of everyone else's names
the hunting of the island pigs also foreshadows his death
kinda puts audible out of buisness, don't ya think?
Only non copy righted books are on RUclips.
Koro Sensei who cares

ok piggy
“what would grown ups think” ahh

I think I first listend to this in 2018.
6:08:03 wtf why would piggy say that😭 in my book it says Indians not THAT
The book is from the 1950s; back then, there had been very little non-white immigration into Britain (in proportional terms). Go to any country that isn't racially mixed, racist language is extremely common. Your book has been censored, hence why he doesn't say it in that...
cause piggy is a white english boy from 1950 something?
Great classic. 👍
forgot to fucking get my book for English class so this will do =w=
When that hard R came in when i was in class i kid you not. We died from laughter 🤣
If you see a little piggy, cute and pink, beware. If they grow up in the wild, they grow into BOARS! Aggressive predators, snort, scuffing hoves, growling squeals. They can and will kill you. My son got chased by one at 11ys old. He threw his backpack at it and climbed a tree. Calm as ever, "Mom, they can't climb trees, jeez!"
6:08:04 in my book it just says indians. Still bad but wtf.
Ch 4, 1:46:22
6:44 "almost visible was the heat", not "almost invisible" that makes no sense
I love this book ❤
I was really enjoying the book can someone please tell me is this actually the
4:36:32 the disembodied pig head is silently talking
4:37:31 talks and somewhat detail about the flies. ew
4:37:57 the sentence were Lord of the flies is first used in the book. Used to describe the pig head on a stick
4:41:12 piggy talking about so we just got to go on
4:41:44 Ralph accepting piggy more
4:44:54 Piggy and Ralph have respect for the shell
4:48:10 the Lord of the flies starts talking and mocking Simon. I don't know if it's actually talkin or in his head.
4:49:15 the Lord of the flies says it's the beast
4:49:45 the Lord of the flies says "I'm part of you"
4:50:24 freaky that's all I have to say. Rest of the chapter is also freaky.
4:52:43 even more talk of the flies and their lord.
4:56:44 talking about the dead fighter pilot who landed on the island and I made a mistake reading this while eating
here from brock
The title lord of the flies refers to the little jellyfish creatures caught in the tide pool by one of the little ones. He is lording over them, yet he is not as he has no knowledge. That is the theme of this book.
