I rose to my feet, stared at him for some seconds in utter amazement. Then it appears I must’ve fainted for the first and last time in my life.
Poor Watson LOL
Your voice is perfect for Sherlock Holmes stories, I can’t listen to anyone else reading them! 🙂
Every 4 or 5 years I dive back into the sherlock holmes stories, in their entirety and read or listen to them all completely. It's just long enough that I forget exactly how holmes comes to many of the conclusions. But the one thing I never forget, is how holmes snuck back into Watson's life, in typical holmes fashion haha!
Movies,TV series,books...i have never been so drawn in except for this man's magical reading.
Kind of you to say so, theresbob
Thank you Greg, I really don’t know how I would get thru these sleepless nights with the winning combination of your soothing voice & the writing of Sir ACD. 💁🏻♀️
My pleasure, Felene!

Thank you for sharing this under recognized story! What a treat for a woman such as I, who struggles against loathing the thin offerings called "entertainment" of our latest blaring and shrinking century. ;-)
This ought had been in comment responding to The Beetle.
You are so welcome, Terri! There's a lot of very thin 'gruel' around these days.
@@terrikennedy3088 The Beetle. Truly one of the most extraordinary tales one could ever conceive of
"...unnecessarily dramatic reappearance."
But that's why we love you, Holmes. The unnecessary drama. 😏😆
Beautiful. I've been a fan of Holmes all my life and read and re-read everything the great ACD wrote. This is like meeting an old friend.
Exactly
I'm having lots of fun listening to these beautifully narrated stories Greg. Thank you.
Thank you
One of the best stories so far and the quote of "Work is the best antidote to sorrow, my dear Watson" has immediately became one my favorite Sherlock Holmes quote.
Mine is "There is nothing in which deduction is so necessary as in religion. It can be built up as an exact science by the reasoner. Our highest assurance of the goodness of Providence seems to me to rest in the flowers. All other things, our powers, our desires, our food, are all really necessary for our existence in the first instance. But this rose is an extra. Its smell and its color are an embellishment of life, not a condition of it. It is only goodness which gives extras, and so I say again that we have much to hope from flowers."
"Watson, we must make use of the tools at hand"...
I've used this quote 100's of times in my lifetime...
@@scrubbingdoubles8585This has been my absolute favorite ACD quote for quite a while. Thank you for drawing attention to it!
Greg, it really is exciting to hear your voice again. You truly are one of the Greatest orcalcally gifted person I have ever heard, Just sitting back, having a beer and listening to you. Cheers, Steve Du Pont.
Extraordinary narration. The accent is so different to other performances done in both radio and tv, all plummy RADA approved Received Pronunciation, and what a unique and refreshing twist to stories already so familiar and beloved by us all. The voice, pace and delivery are also admirable. Thank you to all who enabled me to pass so many pleasant hours listening to these!
Hi odin bacha. You comment is greatly appreciated. I didn't go to RADA, they wouldn't have me - I went to Guildford instead.

RADA's loss is our gain! You're a superlative actor, Greg. :)
I could not have said it better! So fully agree... what a treat!

such a very good reader - he reads with calm, yet makes the story interesting - even though we know all the stories. and if we haven’t heard them for quite a while, he makes them live again :)

I am always thoroughly entertained by Sherlock Holmes & Dr Watson 👍🏿
They're a fab duo.
Thank you for taking me back to my youth. 😊🙏
I'd honestly be dead without these. I have to read some of them for school, but I can easily find myself getting distracted. Listening to them helps so much, and these readings especially make it come to life more, and I find myself wanting to pay attention.
Glad you found them helpful, Emily. Cheers.

Me as well 😂
No one comes close to being holmes and Watson than Greg .the best readings of the holmes cannon ever
Your voice is absolutely incredible !.i love watching your videos thank you for the wonderful stories.

I was just as delighted as Watson to know that Sherlock‘s back 🥰😄I thought he was really‘ ‘gone’ in ‘the Final Problem’!! Greg’s reading of Watson’s reaction was exactly like mine when I heard he’s back! Superb narrating btw👍🏻👏🏻🥰

What a lovely story. Thank you so much for uploading!
These wonderful tales never grow old , terrific narration
Absolutely love these stories and they are read very well ❤
And thus, the gang is back together~
How lovely it is to hear the word “height” pronounced correctly...oh, yes, and great narration, as always.
Much appreciated. Superbly done. Thanks.
Cheers Innasoul.
Sir Arthur certainly knew how to revive a character. J.K Rowling's revival of Harry in the Deathly Hallows was well written, but obvious. J.R.R. Tolkien's revival of Gandalf was surprising and great, but also somewhat predictable (like really, who would think Gandalf could be killed that easily?). Well done, Sir. Rest in peace.
Mostly because he wanted finish the series with the death of Sherlock Holmes. The Final Problem was supposed to be the final story. After it was published, people protested his death. Some even insulted the author. I don't know if it's true but in the internet people claim that the Queen asked the author to ressurect Sherlock Holmes. That's why it's unparalleled with the other, intended resurrections.
There had been examples of people being impacted by the death of a fictional character prior to the Holmes stories such as Charles Dickens death of his child character Neill
in ‘The Old Curiosity Shop’ in which supposedly people from across the ocean were hoping and praying that she wouldn’t die at the end of the story,
But not even her death came close to the impact of Holmes’s death in which thousands of people canceled their subscriptions to the Strand Magazine and men would wear black armbands in mourning and people would constantly be asking Doyle to bring Holmes back in-spite of statements from him such as “Holmes is dead and damned.” & “If I hadn’t killed him, He would have killed me.”
When ‘The Hound of The Baskervilles’ came out in 1901-1902 it was really was considered more of a question as to “when” Holmes would be resurrected, not “if” he would be.
@@cha5 Perhaps why Agatha Christie was reluctant to publish Curtain, keeping it as a nest egg for 30 yrs.
YEAH BABY! *said with tears in my eyes
Flawless narration. Respect!!!
Much appreciated! Thanks AQ
Very good narration.
Greg, thank you for your work! You are a true literal hero.
Love your voice. So smooth but still energetic. And all the different voices for every person plus dialects and accents that you perform. I am amazed. ❤️
Thank you!
Wonderful stories. Good bedtime listening
Glad you like them!
ACD had to bring the great detective back-the public demanded it...Just as your listeners demand you keep up your readings...
Great narration! The voice is spot on and soothing. I’ve read the Sherlock Holmes stories a dozen times and currently binging these like I just discovered them
Glad you enjoy it!
Thank you very much for bringing this content and include the transcription too, this is a very entertaining way to learn vocabulary and grammar for non native speakers
Yes, the transcription thing is useful. Glad it's helpful, Abraham. Cheers.
This guy does a very good job at the old narration... Nice one
Thankyou very much. I really enjoyed this one immensely.

I have never been to a Hard Rock Cafe.
Have I missed out on anything?
@@sherlock_holmes_magpie_audio No, you've not missed anything! It's just like any other chain restaurant--burgers, mainly, with a few obligatory starters and salads. I visited several Hard Rock Cafe locations (London, Paris, Chicago and Las Vegas) back in the 90s, but I think they've lost their "mystique," and are just another burger franchise now.
Amanda Williamson I moved to Springfield, MO not long ago from Louisiana there are so many things I do not know about this area and that was one of them. After I make a stop thru the tea shops I think I will visit there just for nostalgia 😊

Thank you so much. God bless you
It may be said that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle may never had intended to create The Empty House in the first place. You may notice the year this was written in. It had been a long time before the author had written again. Although, it is a slightly symbolic thing that Watson took so much time to write again in-universe before the dramatic return of the world's greatest detective.
I think your the perfect example of how Watson would have sounded like in his early years with Holmes.
Good job chap, a applaud to your performance
Love... Thank you!

Wonderful story & reading. Thank you! NB: Can you believe that Jeremy Brett pronounces Lestrade Le- straid? It jars my ear. But cf: “They always gave the name the Cockney pronunciation 'Lest-raid' rather than 'Le-strahd' as people educated in French tend to read it. Joolz wrote: The "Lestrade" pronunciation is widely debated, as are other pronunciations in Holmes, such as "Irene" in Irene Adler.” Speaking only for myself, I prefer your pronunciation.
Le Strade is the English pronunciation Many French names were in England after people from the Low Countries moved to England after William and Mary were monarchs. Therefore Jeremy Brett was right especially in London.
@@mavisemberson8737 Perhaps, but it doesn’t settle comfortably in my ears.
Listening to or watching varied Holmes productions, there about 50-50 split between "Lestraad" and "Lestrayed".
@mckavitt13 If *anyone had the right to decide pronunciation, it was Brett - who did much more research into Holmes than anyone since Gillett c.1900
Love this
It’d be hilarious if Watson hauled back & punched Sherlock Holmes in the face when he popped up!
*”WATSON!! WATSON WAIT WAIT, I CAN EXPLAIN!!!!*

Dear Greg, your reading is wonderful! Are you, perhaps, an actor?
the best ever
Thank you, I’m tired as hell and was too lazy to read it myself Bc it’s due to tomorrow. (I’m reading “the best of Sherlock Holmes” for a little book report thing)
If Holmes plan was to play dead then wasn't that plan shot when the rock thrower saw he'd not went over falls? Just here trying to follow that but it bugs me when the story doesn't make sense lol. I get he disappeared and bad guys didn't know when he'd reappear but they did know he was alive. So why mess with Watson and those who thought he'd died for years? His plans could have played out just the same knowing as not knowing.
Single malt scotch, a good cigar (try oliva serie V melanio meduro, arturo fuente Hemmingway, La Aroma de cuba Mi Amor") and a sherlock holmes story. An absolute trifecta. Despite the lonileness of our age, you cant be bored any evening with these pleasures.
Sounds perfecto
How come it doesn't really matter the number of times these stories are listed to - perhaps there should be a listeners warning - 'you are about to be trapped'.
Ha!
Alternate solution: While rare, revolver rifles and carbines, they are a thing.
One thing that bugs me:
Sherlock faked his death to hide from his enemies... But Moran, of the very crime ring he is hiding from, knew all along he was not dead.
He had no reason to keep that a secret from his compatriots.
Does not that make the entire charade pointless. If the only people who know Holmes is still alive are the very people he is hiding from?
Initially the secret was from absent compatriots . When an equally murderous compatriot showed himself and the secret was broken; Holmes may have decided that any action by Moriarty's seconds in disclosing Holmes' being alive would be counter productive in firstly drawing attention to their claim by police and second in so much as one can not be convicted of murdering someone already dead.
It's a pity they show all these great books in movie form on TV instead of doing the same ones over and over again
great
How are you getting along there at magpie? Hope that you are having fun.
Blessings for all
Sherlock Holmes’ recounting of his accounts, before revealing himself to Dr. Watson, reminded me of, the travels of Marco Polo.
good
"You see, Watson, I had to pretend I had died in order to deceive Moriarty's cronies, even though they were actually the only ones who knew I was alive all along, but I couldn't trust you with the knowledge because reasons."
"Holmes, you really are a jerk."
Ha! True
