    a common misconseption is that when you see the mach cone form around a jet, that is it passing supersonic and will release a sonic boom. This is not the case most times, the mach cone forms at around mach .96-.98, therefore meaning that the plane is almost supersonic but not quite yet, hense the condensation around the aircraft. Once they accelerate past that then you will hear the boom but most of these low flybys you see cant get up to supersonic speed because if they do they will shatter all the surrounding windows and damage everyones ears

    • @ariferr7274
      @ariferr7274 9 месяцев назад +4

      you are right they dont travel at Mach 1 but slightly slower when seeing the condensation cones. I thought that due to the acceleration over the wings, the flow over the wings does experience Mach 1. Thats why the compression waves happen and we see the condensation etc. So i dont see why there shouldnt be a sonic boom as there are compression waves. Maybe not so loud as when travelling at Mach 1 but still.

    I guess this guy is too young to realize some of us are old enough to remember the Concorde. Which was decommissioned around 2002 which is clearly not 50 years. I literally heard the sonic boom as a kid in 1989 when it took off from Atlanta. It was a huge thing back then that people would gather outside of the airport to listen to the sonic boom.
    It's funny you said it's been "illegal" in commercial airlines since 1974. All the while the Concorde was a commercial airline that produce a sonic boom.

    • @patrickherke8947
      @patrickherke8947 8 месяцев назад

      Yeah, because the ban was a general prohibition on civilian supersonic flight above the United States. It didn't make the existence of the aircraft illegal. And it also had a provision for requesting a special authorization to bypass that rule. Also, Concorde wasn't a US company.
      The relavant code from ecfr.gov is: § 91.817 Civil aircraft sonic boom.
      (a) No person may operate a civil aircraft in the United States at a true flight Mach number greater than 1 except in compliance with conditions and limitations in an authorization to exceed Mach 1 issued to the operator in accordance with § 91.818.
      (b) In addition, no person may operate a civil aircraft for which the maximum operating limit speed MM0 exceeds a Mach number of 1, to or from an airport in the United States, unless-
      (1) Information available to the flight crew includes flight limitations that ensure that flights entering or leaving the United States will not cause a sonic boom to reach the surface within the United States; and
      (2) The operator complies with the flight limitations prescribed in paragraph (b)(1) of this section or complies with conditions and limitations in an authorization to exceed Mach 1 issued in accordance with § 91.818.

    • @nixl3518
      @nixl3518 8 месяцев назад

      Yes, it was illegal! They passed the law, preventing the Concord, or any passenger supersonic airplane from flying supersonic “overground“! That didn’t happen instantly, but once it did, Concord had to fly out over the Atlantic on its way to Paris before going supersonic, which would happen anyways! What it never did was fly coast to coast across the US supersonicly, which was definitely part of the plan originally!

      @milbruh6671 10 месяцев назад

      If we wanted to go into specifics, concorde at full speed was actually quite fuel efficient, however below mach 1 efficiency takes a huge hit and because much of it flew over land in portions of the flight it means that it wasn't very fuel efficient during a good portion of the flight as most countries banned commercial planes going above mach 1. Having a supersonic plane with an almost inaudible sonic boom would allow faster flight times and greater efficiency, still doesn't necessarily change the fact that it runs on fossil fuels but it is a neat fact if anything

    My favorite part of this is that when you’re traveling faster than the speed of sound the waves don’t start until the plane is already past, changing flight characteristics

    In the early 50's, the Airforce had jets fly over Pittsburgh creating sonic boom.
    I remember it as a little boy. The tests were stopped because of broken windows.

    It will be a breakthrough from the material side. One shape won’t work; it will have to adjust its shape based on incoming aerodynamic conditions. SMAs are the leading choice for their mechanical shape transformation.

    It seems a bit misleading to portrait the sonic boom as the reason supersonic aviation was stopped in the first place. The real reason was more complex, but it was mostly due to the Concordes being involved in a few accidents, specifically it had a bad habit of experiencing tyre blowouts during takeoff and could experience

    I think gravity has a play with the sonic boom. Like no matter how you try to prevent the shape of the sound, seems like everything heads downwards.
