    I definitely wish that this was more of a "standard". Especially for us folks that like self hosting but don't want to stuff a rack in our houses haha. Great video as always man!

      @@wojtek-33 That's awesome! What're you running and what is the noise and heat like?

    It's awesome you're still working on this project, i just purchased one last week and have started my build in it. Went with 9U, but putting 2x itx systems in powered off 1 revolt x. One for various VMs, the other bare metal pfsense. I'll finally have proper 2.5gbe, a nas, and a proper playground for VMs.

    Glad to see you follow up on the 10 inch rack. I also grabbed one of those 10 inch enclosures last year and have been building up a similar system. I've got a 12 port keystone jack panel, a pfsense firewall, a switch on one of those same shelves you showed, and probably the same dual pi 3d printed thing you have, but with the 0.93 oled screens. I did have to design and print rack ears for the firewall device, and also a few other things for it as well. It's no joke to say that this isn't really something you can get into without a 3d printer.

      I will say that I find the monoproce slim Ethernet cables nice for connecting things within the rack itself, as they look less oversized in the tiny rack.

  • @ndupontnet
    @ndupontnet 9 месяцев назад

    Your comment about keystone connectors saved me some trouble as I didn't know I to repair a cable that had been cut a bit short in one room. Way easier than trying to splice or use a female-female connector.

    Really want you to revisit this and show the wiring going out the back(?) of the rack. I cannot find pictures of this case that illustrate this. If this can reduce external cabling to 1 power and 1 network cable, this would be perfect. Also interested in cooling and sound.

    A few issues for home server setups - most small racks are small in height and depth. Faster then 1Gb switches cost a ton of money still.

    I wish there was more options for small SOHO racks. IDC racks are made with directional airflow. I've made mine from wood, plastic, and wire 😆 ghetto

      Would love if they made more surge protectors for this size rack too. The only one available I can find is by Atlas and it’s over 2x the price of the 19” rack ones.

    you need to do followup and add some storage and also killawatt stats startup/idle/full load - also how many next gen sbc could you fit in one? add fans to front door or back - push filtered air through case - can also double as a air purifier - also think about making detents for stacking these

  • @shephusted2714
    @shephusted2714 Год назад

    you should make clone of the rack and systems - the only thing i see you need is more emphasis on faster network and nvme - realistically these sbc max out at 2.5/5 but that is fine - you can still run nas and ws on 10 or 20 with bonding/bridging - you should go with a couple ups and then ha opnsense to managed switch - it will allow you to have failover and agg - for out of band and backdoor you could run pikvm on the opnsnense #round robin #netfs #scale #cluster in a box

    Great! I am building a 10 inch rack too, my plan is to put all my home network there, also, some time ago you did a video about the 52pi router board for the CM4 and showcased the board working with the PiJuice, I want to do the same and actually put it inside my 10 inch rack, how did you managed to install the pijuice software into openwrt? I can't seem to find much information about the subject.

    Im assuming for your network input, you need to have an ISP right? Mine is connected via an ISP router and wondering if this is how the professional world does it as well
    2nd, im looking at making a dedicated home lab server from my raspberry pi, and was wondering - how do you select what motherboard and cpu to use?

    • @elbowlessgoat
      @elbowlessgoat Год назад

      You can setup a network without internet without using an ISP. If you want internet, you will need an ISP, and so do professional environments.
      However, some ISPs will let you terminate it on your own edge router/modem (eg. a ubiquite dream machine pro), others may make use of their modem mandatory, in which case you can put firewall/switches/etc behind it.

    • @elbowlessgoat
      @elbowlessgoat Год назад

      As for your second question, I can’t speak for Nova, but when I select cpu/motherboard I usually look at what what features (core count, amount of pcie slots, etc) I need and what features would be nice to have and then basically start looking for low power motherboard and cpu version that meet the minimal requirements and may even have (some of) the nice to haves.
