This video needs more likes. There is very little information out there regarding the replacement of this particular RO system and the manual is very vague on how to proceed.
This explanation was to the point and very, very informative.
I bookmarked this video because it is a lifesaver.
Thank you, sir.
I am so glad you found it helpful! your comment made my day. Thank you.
Well said. This video was extremely informative.
Every 6 months I have to watch this video. It's the best one out there.
Thanks! i go back and rewatch some of my videos to remember how I did things, too.
We could not of changed the filters with out you. Stage 2 is pretty worthless with the manual. You covered everything. Thank you.
I am so glad you found it helpful! Thanks for commenting.
My husband agree 100 % !! With this video he was able to change all of them. But this number 2 is hard to deal with . I found this video and gave it to my husband!!! Thank you very much!!!!
Thanks tons for this video. I was dreading doing the job with them crazy hose connectors, etc. But watching your video actually made it a breeze. The only joints that gave me issues were my 72 yo body joints that protest crawling under sinks these days. Thanks Again!
Glad it helped! Comments like this make my day. I make the videos to help others and it is nice to hear that it did. Thank you
I’ve come back to this video every year. Thank you so much for making.
You are welcome! I am glad you like the video. I often go back and rewatch videos to see how I did things.
This was so helpful and best tutorial I’ve seen! Thank you so much! Was done in 30 minutes.
Glad you found it helpful. Thanks!
Great video and covered all of the details needed to change filters. Agree the instructions leave much to be imagined. Thank you for sharing!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for this! I'm right about the 6-month Mark changing stage one and three and the tops were screwed on so tight I thought I was doing something wrong. Completely forgot I had that black tool in one of my drawers until I saw yours and I was like AHA! Appreciate you! ✌🏿
Thanks! Glad you got it figured out.
Thanks! You saved us from a divorce trying to change the filters
LOL, you are welcome
Nice video! Here's a tip for removing hoses for stage 4 if you have trouble pressing any of the collars because of limited space for both your hands: use a small crescent wrench adjusted loosely to the width of the hose to depress the collar while pulling the hose.
Cool, thanks!
Excellent tutorial. Thank you for making this job easy!
You're very welcome! Glad it helped
Excelente vídeo. You’re a great instructor.
Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed the video.
Thank you. Your video helped me.

Thank you so much for this video!!!
I am glad it was helpful!
very helpful - thanks for doing this and saving me time.
You're welcome!
This video saved me so much frustration and swear words. Thanks for the info.
You're welcome! Glad it helped
Thanks! Super helpful
Very informative. You have a new subscriber. Thank you.
Awesome, thank you! Glad the video was helpful.
Thank you sir. After 3 days and multiple trips to Home Depot, I’m officially done.
Congrats! Glad you got it done!
Thanks for this video. One recommendation: The manual states not to reconnect the Stage 1 and Stage 3 until the remineralizer is installed. This prevents unnecessary flow and dripping.
Good tip!
Thanks for the vid.
Glad it helped!
Thank you sir. Just subscribed.
Awesome, thank YOU!
Thank you!!!
You're welcome!
Very helpful! I had an issue where I couldn’t get the sump housing to twist back on, the trick is to twist the white tabs back to position to be able to twist the housing back properly…
Glad it helped! Thanks for the tips.
Thank you sir
You're welcome
I’ve had this system for 3 years and when I replaced stage 1 and 3 this year the sump cap o-ring on both stages leaked. Called AO-Smith for support and the o-ring flattened out, the guy was really great. My system is out of warranty (2 year) but unfortunately you can’t get just the o-rings and was $7.50 per cap, $5.00 shipping. (Edit: Never found it necessary to use the that tool either. This helped me a lot with Stage 2 and 4. Thank You!)
Yeah, you don't really need the tool. Glad you got it worked out with AO Smith. I have found the people on the support line to be very helpful.
I just had the same issue, all I did was put the O-ring in a cup of really hot water for 20 minutes, and it was like new again
Omg! After I spent two hours trying to fix the leak from stage 1 I came across this comment and the hot water worked. Thank you for sharing, I was so frustrated.
@@Bklynmonk1 Hi, my stage 1 and 3 also leak from sumps, but I am not sure if those o-ring have any problem. How can you tell o-rings are not working? Did you take off those tiny black o-ring and put them in hot water?
@@ciaravelez1718 Hello, my stage 1 and 3 also leak from sumps, but I am not sure if those o-ring have any problem. How can you tell o-rings are not working? Did you take off those tiny black o-ring and put them in hot water?
Your instructions were clear and made it very easy to change out these filters. However, after allowing the system to recharge overnight, there is no water flow from the system faucet. Any suggestions?
There isn't anything in the system that should be restricting water flow. Double check that the water supply is turned back on. If it is, I would call the AO Smith help line. I have found them to be super helpful in the past. 877.333.7108
This great. The instructions never said to take the white elbow off and reuse it. You have no idea how many times this gave me grief! Id call the company and say you didn’t send a white elbow! They would mail me another. So I’d have to wait and but bottled water until that stupid part came in. They never once told me to reuse the old one! One tip I have is to wear gloves or be careful not to touch the interior parts with your bare hands.
Glad the video helped. Thanks for posting the tip!
I turned the whole system off and was going to trash it, thanks to your video I think it’s a keeper until I buy the whole house system
I am glad the video helped!
Nice video! On most RO systems that I have seen, there is a sanitation flush usually once a year which usually involves a small amount of bleach. I haven't seen this noted anywhere in the documentation. Do you know if it is needed or how you would perform it?
I have installed 2 ro systems ( the AO Smith and iSpring) neither mentioned an annual sanitization flush. In the AO Smith installation video one of the steps is adding a little bleach to the system and then flushing it out. If you you want to do an annual sanitization, I would follow those steps. ruclips.net/video/5JjipMiJqNY/видео.html Step 8
Thanks
Do they really make a difference? I use the water dispenser for water.
Yes, they do help with water quality. I ahve a well and I get my water tested periodically, and adding this filter gets it to pass the inspection.
how often should you replace the pressure tank diaphragm?
The diaphram is not replaceable as far as I know. You would have to replace the tank. They should last 7-10 years. If the water slows to a trickle after a small amount of water comes out of the faucet (like a cup full), and the tank feels like it is still full of water, then the bladder probably ruptured and the tank need to be replaced.
Are you supposed to put the red thing back in before putting the elbow on?
If you are talking about the red protective cover, no. If you are talking about the red hose with the flow restrictor, you can put the red hose into the elbow first or you can out the elbow into the filter first. It doesn't matter.
After change out all the filters. Why does it sound like marbles coming from the water tape when not being used. Almost sounds like air is purging from the hole on the side for hours at a time. Then stops then comes back.
That is just air in the system, and is normal after changing filters. It will works itself out eventually, but can take a while.
Can I replace all of the parts (filters, membrane and remineralizer) at the same time and purge the system for 24 hrs or should I replace them one by one, following each of the installation instructions for the different time limits on each part?
replace them all at once
Will it hurt the system to increase the pressure in the tank so the filtered water comes out a little faster?
A.O. Smith recommends 5-7 lbs of air pressure. To check it, you need to drain the water from the tank. Over inflating will not increase the water pressure coming out of the faucet. It may damage the diaphram in the tank. Call the help line in the instruction manual. I have found them to be very helpful.
How do you know for sure which is the carbon filter and which is the claryum filter?
I don't remember if it is in the documentation or not, ( I don't have this RO system anymore) but the white one is the carbon filter and the blue one is the claryum filter.
hmm, my replacements didn't come with a new flow restrictor
Call the AOSmith help line. They might send you one.
So I replaced Stage 1-4 and now Stage 1 and 3 canisters are leaking . And my faucet leaks when I connect those two. If I remove Stage 1 and 3 Canisters everything stops leaking. I don’t know how to fix this… Help
As far as the sumps leaking, lube the o-rings in the cap with a food grade silicone lubricant. Try twisting the sump cap 1/4 turn and then tighten it again. Twist it back and forth 3 or 4 time. I have had success doing this get the o-ring to seat property. For leaking faucet, if it is coming out of the little keyhole opening in the base, this is because the drainage tube is clogged. Disconnect the tube from the sink drain and the put water or air in the key hole to clear the drainage tube (have a basin ready to catch whatever comes out).
For the last part: Does this mean you have to literally run the faucet for 24 hours after you change the filter or did I misunderstand that part?
Yes, run for 24 hours. After the first few minutes, it is just a trickle. Once it empties out the tank, the water comes out only as fast as the RO filter lets it through, so a very slow process.
Did anyone have trouble aligning the sumps to the top? I have limited space between the tank and that area which makes it hard to replace cartridges. Since I don’t know what the underside I’m aligning to I can’t seem to get it right. I wonder if anyone else has had this problem aligning the sumps to get them to attach up there? Also does that mean that the sump has to be diagonal and not straight before making the quarter turn?
They can be a little fussy, but they do line up. Having limited space and increase the difficulty. Not sure what you mean by the sump being diagonal.
@@TheFixitShed When you first try and align the sump to the top do you have it where the connections face straight or diagonal. I've tried both ways and none worked. 😵💫😤😡Now I can't use the RO so I had to go and buy water bottles.
@@ZumbaMyWorkout When you look at the top of the sumps, there are 2 ports and a "V" forming a line across the top of the sump. When you are inserting the pump, the port in the center needs to be in the middle, obviously, and the other port should be to the back (towards the wall). The "V" should be at the front (away from the wall). I actually needed to do my anual change, and just went through this process tonight, while you were asking this question. If it is still fighting, use your phone or a camera, and take a picture of where the sumps fit in. That might help you better see how it fits in.
How do you fix low air pressure on the tank?
You have to drain the water from the tank to correctly check the pressure. It should only be 5-7 lbs. It is hard to get an accurate measurement that low with car type air compressors or gauges. Maybe a bicycle tire pump would work better.
@@TheFixitShed TY sir
Frog is the star of the show
If you still have the ao smith system, switch to simpure 6 stage. It's sooo much better. Water doesn't deplete so quickly, better quality faucet, more pressure, cheaper replacement filters, cheaper system overall. Oh and it was easier to install.
Thanks. When I am looking to replace this system, I will keep that in mind.
Have you tried to repressurize the tank? My system will not run for more than 20 minutes.
Does it completely stop, or does it just trickle after 20 min. If it just trickles, that is normal. The tank pressure should be 5-7 psi when empty. I have not ever needed to do it
@@TheFixitShedI saw other videos where people were emptying out the tanks and adding air to the 5 to 7 pound range. On their systems their tanks had a shut off valve on top so you could disconnect it from the system. Mine just runs that a trickle after several minutes. I guess that’s just normal. Thank you for the response
@@ImAwakeOK you are welcome
I just changed sump 1 and sump 3 filters and now they are leaking. I've done everything, even put the old filters back in to see if that somehow meant anything, but no, they're still leaking. Will this stop once the tank is repressured or refilled?
Where is it leaking from? Is the cap on the sump on securely? They can loosen when you are installing the sump back into the manifold. Also, make sure the o-ring on the ports sticking up out of the sump are seated properly.
@@TheFixitShed I will check that. I didn't see any o rings on any of it except the little tiny light blue ones on the new filter itself. My system is in a very small space and difficult to see, so it's possible I just missed those🤷♀️. Thanks for the suggestion.
No problem. If you still have issues, I would call AO Smith. there is a 1 800 number in the installation instructions (which you can find online if you don't have them). I have found them to be quite helpful..
I'm having the same problem with the #3 filter only. Took it apart again and re installed it. Still leaking. Any other suggestions ?
@@johndriscoll3148 okay, so the 800 number for AO Smith was very nice and I do recommend calling them for a replacement cap and O ring, they will overnight it to you. I had tightened the cap too much, and that was it, didn't seem like a big deal, but you DO NOT want to tighten that thing hardly at all, before you do that though, try this: my problem wound up being very simple, I'm not sure of the technical names, but the little red line connected to the filter spout up top and pipe under the sink, (mine has a blue o-ring thing it's stuck into) was just a bit dirty! I pulled it from the blue ring, draining it into a bucket, and scraped around in it with a long wire of some sort (hanger?), And a few bits of gunk came out, put it back together and wa-la, has been working and not leaking anywhere ever since.
Waited two hours turned on the water it only lasted about 10mins then it stopped flowing.
That is how it should work. Should just be a trickle after the first few minutes.
@@TheFixitShed so when I hooked everything up. Your first video helped alot. I waited about 2 hours turned on the ro Faust ran for a few mins and it started to trickle. Out am I supposed to leave it on for 24hrs with barley any thing coming out. Cause I checked and double checked. I even removed the tank hose and it was barley coming out of the hose with the water on. Have good flow to the hose going to filter 1
Yes, that is exactly right. The membrane (stage 2) is the bottle neck. RO is a slow process. That is why it has a tank, so that it stores up some water so you can fill a glass quickly (or at least quicker than a trickle) when you want it.
It does not flow like that for 24hr only 10 mins help would be nice
Correct. If you are purging the system, it only comes out fast until the tank is empty and then it just trickles. Sorry, can't be more responsive. I am at work.
@@TheFixitShed so I should just leave it open for 24hrs even if there is no water coming out. Just brought the system and installed it
If there is no water coming out, that is a problem. Call the help line. If it is a trickle, let it run for 24 hours.
I just replaced my filters and there is no water coming
Double check to make sure that the water is back on where you turnd it off. If still no water, call the help line.
I like this system, it has 4 stages of filtration, the one they sell at Costco only has 3 stages and cost a lot less. 24 hours of flushing? That's a lot of water wasted and your water bill is going to be high.
After the first few minutes, it is just a trickle. It is probably about 2 or 3 gallons.
I turned the water off and let the water run until it went out and my step 2 turned out disastrous 😂 idk what I did wrong!!
Hard to say. There is always some water that will come out of the sumps. Good to have a small bucket or towels to catch what you can. Hope you got it figured out.
I really regret having purchased this product. It was not installed properly, it leaked, paid for plumbers 4 times plus the expense of filters. It is a real headache.
That is unfortunate. Sorry you are having such a bad experience with it. I haven't had any problems with leaking, myself, but I do agree with you about the cost of the filters. I installed an iSpring RO filter at my son's place, and the filters are a little less expensive. I hope yours gets straightened out.
I think your frog needs to go out.
