I built a portable version of the multi stage systems that are commonly installed under kitchen sinks. Each one of those stages is a plastic tube that contains some volume of water. So any time it sits that means each stage has standing water. I installed a t connector and a valve to allow flushing of the entire prestage before it reaches the RO membrane. People who maintain fresh and saltwater aquariums have been doing it for years to ensure the purest water goes into their tanks since even the slightest contamination can kill off a tank full of various expensive tropical fish and corals.
Wow! I have been using the waterdrop N1 countertop RO system for the past 3-years but just assumed the water was pure due to the low TDS. Now you have me wondering if my water is safe. Update- I took apart my system to check for any chemical reservoirs and there are none. Just the filters, tubing two pumps, a front holding tank that contains the UV LED and TOC sensor, power supply and controller board. The big pump is a LEFOO RO booster pump and that does the main pumping through the RO membrane filter. The water then goes into a clear front holding tank that you can't see unless you take the front cover off. That has the UV LED at the bottom. Then there is a small pump that pumps from the front tank to where the water comes out. I am wondering if there was a misinterpretation of what they said was performed in the manufacturing process. Very strange. There are rubber seals and two of them felt as if they were lubricated with something like petroleum jelly. It had that feel to it. Maybe that is the source???

Based on the study you guys linked, it's more than likely that the chemicals are from the manufacturing process. Methylene chloride seems to be prevalent in membrane/polymer manufacturing, and it's either remaining in the membrane material or not removed properly as part of quality control. Have you looked at other RO membranes? It seems this might be a widespread issue and not limited to Waterdrop.
She said that the purified water had been tested after 2 weeks of use, and the recommended 3 gallon flush at the beginning. It had been rinsed plenty and this still showed up
@@commie281 On an actual RO system hooked up to a tap it's recommended to flush for 30 minutes. So consider how little 3 gallons is to flush, and how little 2 weeks of use is for such a system that is used to just fill a glass of water at a time.
Perhaps the disinfectant tank is contained within the filter and would get replenished when the filter is replenished? If so, they could fix the problem by redesigning the filters.
Good thinking. I'm just not sure how the system would make it so that the disinfectant is only released every several running cycles as stated by Waterdrop.

Even in distilled water has been found with micropalastics in it. So currently there is no filters that are currently available can ensure 100% chemical free water.
Thanks for the input. I still think there's a difference between a water filter not removing a chemical and a water filter adding one at a concerning amount.
Thank you for your work. Looking forward the RO comparison. Would be very interesting also to compare the micro and nano plastic content after RO depuration. Particularly if we consider that the 2024 NIH study on plastic particles in bottled water proved that many of those particles derive from water purification processes
I agree. Unfortunately, testing for mircoplastics is extremely expensive. And testing for nanoplastics isn't even an option that labs offer at this point.
My guess would be the contaminants are from the manufacturing process. Both methylene chloride and xylene ae NOT soluble in water, so it doesn't matter how many time you pre-wash the system. Having said that, there is always some insoluble chemicals that will come out even if they are generally insoluble. Additionally, where are the filters manufactured? Many "low cost" manufacturing countries have little to no quality checks.
I was just watching your Video as I was intrested in getting one but No way as a little badness becomes fatal after some time . Thank you for this very clear point that companies don't care about the user just the money they like to hide the truth and not tell you what they put in it.
@@boswater6065 I have the G3p600, I hope this is not the case with it, as I just purchased it back in February. Look forward to the results, thank you for what you are doing.
@@boswater6065 hmmm...I'll have to take a look at the Clearly Filtered. Currently, we have the waterdrop G3 ro system and I am concerned with it putting nanoplastics in the water. I'm thinking one of the stainless steel gravity ones might be able to solve it. Berkey seems kind of questionable with the whole lawsuit and refusal to do nsf though. Any recommendations for a gravity system?
We are working on a big video for the best/most popular gravity water filters right now. But it'll take a few weeks until publishing. What I can tell you from our research so far is that with this kind of system, there doesn't seem to be a single model that has official NSF certifications for a considerable amount of contaminants. What some companies have done is their own testing against NSF standards, though.
After seeing this I am going to unplug my Waterdrop A1 and wait for an update. If it is an issue with the way the filters are manufactured then they should send a free replacement filter to everyone that owns an A1 unit once they have fixed the issue.
Problem is all the water purifiers are made of plastic. Unless you test for them, you have no idea if the plastics contain pthalates and other chemicals associated with plastics and microplastics. I don’t store water or foods in plastic containers anymore.
Great Videos! Keep em coming! Looking forward to the Waterdrop N1 or K19 reviews. I'm still undecided between a Waterdrop or The RKIN U1 Countertop RO.
Hi Alexa, thanks so much for this. I own a k19 and I’m now concerned, having using it for 5 months. Have you tested yet? I’ll stop using it in the meantime
probably the plastic leaching from the water tank. Seen it from a Name brand countertop ice maker where you put water into it. The cubes come out insanely chemical tasting. Despite several water sources.
@@boswater6065 You mentioned elswhere in these comments doing the "Ultimate" test from ETR labs, I found their price for that to be $799. Do you have any advice - I'm reluctant to buy a $800 test for my filtered water but $200 is ideal!
We use their premium test kit. That's around $250 I believe. A comparable test by Tap Score costs a little bit more. These are the only 2 tests we've used so far, and they cover a lot of contaminants. Totally understand that you don't want to spend $800. Maybe go with the $250 kit? I don't really know any good low-cost alternative.
Nice work on this channel + research! Have you tested the Waterdrop x12? Holding off on waterdrop until more research comes out, it's a bummer because their products are so compact.
Amazing video, please test the Osmio Zero from the UK 😅 I'm worried now! I thought when I first bought an RO hmm I wonder if the membrane filter leaches any chemicals out . . . 😪 it seems like it might do!
Thanks, I've added it to our list. So far we've tested 10 RO systems, and 3 (including the Waterdrop A1) should potential signs of leaching manufacturing chemicals. But some of those chemicals were in really low concentrations which should subside quickly. Hope this helps!
RO membranes fill the final water with nanoplastics. The filters are made of plastic. You need to Google “Columbia University water nanoplastics study”. Good luck avoiding any of this and better luck finding vendors that are honest and know what their own products are doing.
You can check all countertop RO models we've tested in our comparison video. Those are all the RO systems we've tested so far. The under sink RO comparison video hasn't been released yet.
Because... cheap Chinese manufacturers. They have no problem injuring their own people for a buck, why would anyone else be given additional consideration?
theres a lot of soapy stuff that comes out when flushing a new filter. I wonder if the residual last a long long time - which would be very bad! They should recall this system, esp since the hot water function doesnt even work well!
Everything made out of plastic. Plastic Leaching especially heated plastic. This was my initial guess. But that they deliberately sanitized using known carcinogenics is insane, GREAT WORK. INFO I NEED. I SUBSCRIBED!
Thanks for subscribing. Please check our video update for the most current information (for one, Waterdrop has clarified that there was no sanitizer to begin with).
Thank you. There are a few stainless steel ROs, but at least those that I know are only partially stainless steel. So for example, they still use plastic filter cartridges, so not really ideal. There're also systems like the AquaTru Carafe that collect the filtered water in a glass container. But again, plastic components are used, too. It's always food-grade plastic, but I understand your concerns.
@ so, what is the best countertop system that provides quality non-contaminated water and what is the best whole house Walter filtration system? Thank you in advance 😃
We have a top 10 countertop RO video on our channel (ruclips.net/video/-W65jKwcE2w/видео.html) and we will publish a video with our top countertop water filters (both RO and non-RO) very soon! As for whole house, what are you trying to achieve/remove from your water?
Alexa I really wanted to buy that water drop a1 till you found out about that cancer causing substance you found in your testing . Today is August 4 has water drop yet said they would do something to prevent that cancer causing substance in the future and if so when will it be safe if ever. Thank you, Rob H. What countertop RO system is safe and makes pure water. Cost is not an issue. For obvious reasons I’m looking for the best I can find.
Hi Rob, Waterdrop told us that they've made some improvements to the A1 to resolve the issue and so the system is back on the market (we haven't had the chance to re-test it yet). We will post an update about this soon. As for which other countertop RO we recommend, check our big comparison video!
You may have mentioned this in another video or answered this below - if so, I apologize - but does this concern apply to other waterdrop systems, like the waterdrop g3p800? Curious since I just purchased this unit but cannot find that information anywhere. Thanks!
This can apply to any water filter using a reverse osmosis membrane. We've tested many other RO systems in the meantime and found a few others with issues (some leaching chemicals above and some below health guidelines). We haven't tested the Waterdrop G3P800, but we tested the G3P600 and this one was fine. Also, the G3P800 holds some NSF certifications so it was tested for material safety and structural integrity. This means that it may leach chemicals, but if so then the leaching didn't exceed the allowable concentrations, because otherwise the system wouldn't have received a certification - hope that makes sense.
Try this testing protocol on a counter top stainless steel & glass water distiller. There are no filters to fail. Usually they operate at ~3KW per gallon.
I just realized that the WD A1 system as well as the WD-A1-RO filters were both discontinued, as in they're both out of stock in the WaterDrop site as well as Amazon. I wonder if this has anything to do with it. Either way, Waterdrop should won their mistake and do a proper recall. Isn't the FDA supposed to force them to do it? How can they sell their system in the US and just leave it like that?
It's not coincidence. Waterdrop is looking into the issue as has pulled the A1 from all their channels. We're planning on posting an update on this once we know more.
@@boswater6065 yeah praises for them to look into it (i.e. for them to do their job), but their communication (or lack thereof) couldn't have been worse. They need to do an official recall rather than this blatant deservice.
I see your point. At the same time, they said they already did their own testing a couple of months back and didn't find any issues. So I also understand that they are skeptic about our lab results.
Thank you for the video, If you guys could do the WaterDrop K19 , it would be greatly appreciated, I got it a month ago as my first RO water dispenser and have been using it daily. Wish I would have done a little more research before buying...
We have a Brio, standing type, with hot and cold dispenser. But I saw a video showing the same type of self-cleaning and wondering if it has the same chemicals?
@@boswater6065 Which of their water tests did you use for this video? Remarkable findings, my families been using a WaterDrop RO undersink for years and I NEED to do this research!
Thank you for the information. I've noticed in the reports that the "Total bacteria count" in the tap water is at 0 cfu/mL but the result of the RO water shot up to >1600 cfu/mL??? That is very concerning!!!
Total bacteria isn't harmful. The count always goes up as soon as you take chlorine out of the water. These bacteria are everywhere and should not be confused with E. Coli and other potentially harmful types.
Do you know what chemical (red substance) the manufacturer (specifically Pentair) uses for a red indicator timestrip for H-300 water filters and whether it is dangerous to touch? I followed the instructions on how to activate it, which suggest to pinch the bubble firmly until the bubble collapses, and repeat squeezing more firmly on the bubble if the indication line does not appear. I repeated squeezing since the indication line as not activated after the first trial, and the red substance popped up and covered my skin. Appreciate your response.
Curious your thoughts on a whole house system vs. individual filters at the sink/shower/etc. seems like the upkeep of these small systems is pretty expensive vs whole house just needs solar salts? But whole house is a big investment, would love your thoughts!
It depends on your water quality and what you want to achieve. A filter at the point of use may be required to remove all contamination out of your drinking water, and a whole house filter might not do the drink. But a whole house filter will probably do a much better job cleaning your shower water than a shower filter. But you mentioned solar salts, so I'm assuming you are looking into water softeners? Water filters and water softeners are 2 different things. If you want to soften your water then you definitely need to go whole house.
It is for sure. Yes, RO softens hard water. But whole house RO is extremely expensive (for one it requires proper pre and post-treatment of the water). And unless your water quality is really bad, whole house RO might be over the top. Maybe it makes sense to have your water quality tested first.
@@boswater6065 , Thank you. Can you just say if G3P600 is safe? I bought it and waiting for your video to come out to decide weather to install it or not.

Thank you for your work in this area. I just purchased a simpure Y7. Perfect timing. 😂 Did that allow any VOC? Also the report you read said as the membrane wears out it releases VOC ?
We tested the SimPure Y7 for more than 40 different VOCs, and none of them were detected in the filtered water. As for your second question, we're not 100% sure how the 2 chemicals ended up in the filtered water. First, our theory was that the chemicals originate from the membrane manufacturing process. But Waterdrop said they come from a disinfectant that the A1 uses after several running cycles.
@@boswater6065 I tested my water and it's high in nitrates. The modern castle video and another tester showed the clearly filterd pitcher does not remove nitrates in water . Also, will you be lab testing the Clearly Filtered and Aqua Tru under sink filter? I might consider one of those instead of an under sink RO system. I would like to buy a new system asap, so I hope you post results soon! Looking forward to hearing back - thank you!
We will test the Clearly Filtered Under Sink eventually, but it's not an RO systems and thus not part of the under sink RO video. The AquaTru under sink model also isn't part of it. We're trying to publish this as soon as possible, but we had some setbacks before so I don't want to make any promises that we cannot keep. It will be a few more weeks at least.
Don’t waste your money especially if you don’t have money to waste because none of these “filtering systems” are 100% accurate on every single lab test, and on different waters: eg, city water, country side or well. What if you ditch the Waterdrop RO and spend another few hundreds on another RO and later on find out that it has some issues also. Have you considered doing a second filtration round using the Waterdrop Pitcher with its original filters because it removes this particular chemical. Eventually the toxins in the Waterdrop G3 will clear, it’s still new. Once that disinfectant runs out then there will be no toxins in the water. ❤
Still, there's a big difference between a water filter not removing a contaminants that's already in your water, vs a water filter introducing a new contaminant.
What about Waterdrop G2 RO system ? The one you put under the countertop ? I bet G2 uses different kind of membrane. But I'm wondering if it's cause cancer too ? If you can do a test on G2 , that would be great .
It definitely uses a different membrane, but we've never tested the G2. However, the G3P600 and X12 turned out fine. The G2 is on our list but I can't promise any fast results.

I was just watching your Video as I was intrested in getting one but No way as a little badness becomes fatal after some time .
Thank you for this very clear point that companies don't care about the user just the money they like to hide the truth and not tell you what they put in it.
Have you tested more Waterdrop systems yet? Interested to see if this is a problem with all models or just this one.
We are in the process of testing 2 more, but results aren't in yet.
I wish you'd test the water drop G3 d 800 under counter system from water drop.
We're testing the G3P600, not the 800 model.
@@boswater6065 I have the G3p600, I hope this is not the case with it, as I just purchased it back in February. Look forward to the results, thank you for what you are doing.
Test results for the G3P600 came back fine!
Really grateful for the review as we were gonna get one.
Just know that Waterdrop has updated their A1 in the meantime. We'll post a video update on this as soon as possible.
Thanks for the transparency!
Any time!
Wow, great great video! Thanks for sharing! What do you use for your family's water needs?
Glad you liked it. :) I'm using the Clearly Filtered under-the-sink filter.
@@boswater6065 I will keep an eye out for the video. Thanks again!
Great video! Please do more of this! ❤❤❤
Never thought I would need to lab test RO water. Heh.. Eye opener. Thanks for the video.. I use ispring 5 stage system.
Glad it helped!
After seeing this I am going to unplug my Waterdrop A1 and wait for an update.
If it is an issue with the way the filters are manufactured then they should send a free replacement filter to everyone that owns an A1 unit once they have fixed the issue.
Agreed!
Problem is all the water purifiers are made of plastic. Unless you test for them, you have no idea if the plastics contain pthalates and other chemicals associated with plastics and microplastics. I don’t store water or foods in plastic containers anymore.
You could store the water in a glass container once purified. Also, there are some water purifiers that are completely tankless.
Isn't the main issue with plastic bottles due to extreme temperatures (hot or cold) forcing these chemicals out of the plastic?
I think UV light and warm temperatures accelerate the process but I might be wrong.
@@Mind69420Heat does accelerate the release of these chemicals, but you never know how much unless you test.
Pristine Hydro has been the best one I've ever used. It's under the counter and expensive, but the water comes out tasting like spring water.
Thanks for sharing. I've never heard of Pristine Hydro before. Will check it out!
Great Videos! Keep em coming! Looking forward to the Waterdrop N1 or K19 reviews. I'm still undecided between a Waterdrop or The RKIN U1 Countertop RO.
We haven't tested any of these yet so I can't really provide any advice at this point.
Hi Alexa, thanks so much for this. I own a k19 and I’m now concerned, having using it for 5 months. Have you tested yet? I’ll stop using it in the meantime
No, haven' tested this one yet. I've added it to our list!
@@boswater6065 Please test the k19! Eagerly waiting for this unit, thanks :)
Awesome job, more people got to be detectives nowadays, can't trust any of those shady companies!
Can't wait for the follow up video testing multiple RO systems!
Already published on our channel!
probably the plastic leaching from the water tank. Seen it from a Name brand countertop ice maker where you put water into it. The cubes come out insanely chemical tasting. Despite several water sources.
Great information video. What is appropriate cost for the lab test?
Ours is a little more than $200 per water sample. But it also depends on how many and which analytes you are testing for.
I don't really know any good low-cost alternative.
well I clicked thinking I was going to hear a bunch of crazy stuff. Now I will Subscribe! Thanks
Nice work on this channel + research! Have you tested the Waterdrop x12? Holding off on waterdrop until more research comes out, it's a bummer because their products are so compact.
Yes, we tested the X12 just recently, and no chemicals found.
Thank you for the information. Any updates would be much appreciated.
There will hopefully be an update at the end of the month!
Have you done any tests on the RO machines outside of grocery stores?
You can check all countertop RO models we've tested in our comparison video. Those are all the RO systems we've tested so far. The under sink RO comparison video hasn't been released yet.
Hello, thanks for your video. I cannot understand why such products are release with this kind of problems...
Because... cheap Chinese manufacturers. They have no problem injuring their own people for a buck, why would anyone else be given additional consideration?
Please post or reply with the website for the lab you used to test the water so we can pay to have our water tested too! Thank you!
Sure! We used the Premium Water Test Kit by ETR Laboratories: etrlabs.com/product/premium-water-test/
theres a lot of soapy stuff that comes out when flushing a new filter. I wonder if the residual last a long long time - which would be very bad! They should recall this system, esp since the hot water function doesnt even work well!
Looks like they stopped selling this? Can't find it anywhere suddenly.
Correct. This was confirmed by Waterdrop. They told as they are looking into the issue which I think is the right approach.
Everything made out of plastic. Plastic Leaching especially heated plastic. This was my initial guess. But that they deliberately sanitized using known carcinogenics is insane,
GREAT WORK. INFO I NEED. I SUBSCRIBED!
Thanks for subscribing. Please check our video update for the most current information (for one, Waterdrop has clarified that there was no sanitizer to begin with).
I almost bought this! So glad I didn't. I'll share this video
Make sure to watch our video update on this: ruclips.net/video/1xWC30aa7tw/видео.html
yikes... great review. Is there a stainless steel RO unit that is worth looking into? What about all these plastic components leaching over time?
Thank you for this potentially life saving information 🏆
Any time!
@@boswater6065 thank you
Hi, great video! I would be interested in a watertest for the Waterdrop K6. Have you tested it before? Greetings from Germany :)
Not tested yet, but it's on our list.
Great and thorough information. Thanks
Glad that you like it. You're welcome!
Looking forward to the outcome. Any update on when is it going to be released?
Which outcome are you referring to?
Try this testing protocol on a counter top stainless steel & glass water distiller. There are no filters to fail. Usually they operate at ~3KW per gallon.
We're planning to review water distillers at some point.
that's too much electricity unfortunately
The letter ment there tanks in manufacturing. They need to fix this . Could u review the waterdrop pitcher filter next?
We did. It's part of our pitcher comparison video!
Thank you for this podcast:)
Thanks for listening!
@@boswater6065 I understand and accept the skeptcism, but it doesn't justify the lack of proper communication to their customers... 😞

Premium!

No idea, sorry.
Have you found a tankless RO system that you've reviewed that doesn't come back with troublesome lab results?

@@boswater6065 hmm, we looked at a RO whole house system that also softens the water from my understanding? Is that a thing?
It is for sure. Yes, RO softens hard water. But whole house RO is extremely expensive (for one it requires proper pre and post-treatment of the water). And unless your water quality is really bad, whole house RO might be over the top. Maybe it makes sense to have your water quality tested first.
I see you have a review of the waterdrop G3 but the video doesn't mention water tests. Have you done water tests for the G2 or G3?

Thank you for your work in this area. I just purchased a simpure Y7. Perfect timing. 😂 Did that allow any VOC? Also the report you read said as the membrane wears out it releases VOC ?
We tested the SimPure Y7 for more than 40 different VOCs, and none of them were detected in the filtered water. As for your second question, we're not 100% sure how the 2 chemicals ended up in the filtered water. First, our theory was that the chemicals originate from the membrane manufacturing process. But Waterdrop said they come from a disinfectant that the A1 uses after several running cycles.

I tested my water and it's high in nitrates. The modern castle video and another tester showed the clearly filterd pitcher does not remove nitrates in water . After running my water thru a clearly filtered and a simpure I sent it to be tested. Simpure removed the nitrates clearly filtered did not. Yet clearly filtered said there lab tests show it removes nitrates. The only way to know is to test your own water after you run it thru a system.. Your channel has been helpful. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Rob. We're doing a big review of water filter pitchers right now including lab testing for nitrites/nitrates. The Clearly Filtered is part of this review just like many other pitchers.
Do you guys test distilling water filter systems? Wont those be better since theres no ro membrane?
Yes, distilled water is basically pure H2O. But you'd definitely need to remineralize. There's also the energy consumption and it's a time-consuming process. But we will definitely test water distillers in future!
@@boswater6065 you do not need to put minerals in your water! you are supposed to get your micrnutrients and minerals from fruits mostly and to a lesser degree veggies, R/0 water is for cleansing and water in general is to clense the body not hydrate or for minerals, if you work out and you want to replace minerals but actual coconuts and drink the water from them and melons end of story, a lot of you youtubers need to step your game up and stop presenting false information

I was just looking into purchasing the G3 system, now a bit hesitant!
@@boswater6065 Thanks, anxiously waiting the test results since we need a new under the counter RO system asap.
