I just stumbled upon this video more than 4 years after it was posted. There are lots of details about the discovery of ancient bronzes that I had not heard before. I hope the reward program for bronzes and other artifacts that was given to the finders has continued. Treasure hunters are at work whether we approve of it our not. Getting them to turn over their finds (which they are already have squirreled away) by paying them works. Seeing the number of mounted bronze rulers that have recently been recovered and restored was a special treat for me. The restoration was simply amazing I would like to learn more about the process. Thank you NGA for posting these videos!
I wasn't aware of most the professor told his audience: this is very interesting! especially the small jockey recovery! In my mind this boy was too small for his horse, but now that he has shown us the first picture, I m finally convinced: always happy when proved wrong in sensitive ( to me) topics, because I m generally pessimistic, but often there is no reason to be like that...
The emperor Nero and others have been recorded as emptying the Sanctuary at Delphi for the shipment of sculptures to Rome. Perhaps some kind of search focus on the waters around Corinth and leading to the entrance of the Gulf of Corinth might locate some important works.
Thankyou an enjoyable and very informative lecture, was certaily unaware of the ltest finds, what beautiful works of art although damaged still very beautiful.
Professor Koutsouflakis I salute you! I really enjoyed your interesting lecture and I wish you all the best for your archaeological researches and your life in general as well. Bravo! I wish you LUCK as well! Who knows? Maybe you will be on other "Bronzi di Riace" sleeping on the bottom of the sea, that you can bring again under the Sun's light: it would be wonderful!
I don't think anyone would have thrown away a very valuable metal which could be easily turned into swords etc. I can see where sailors on a sinking ship might. Even cannons are jettisoned when trying to outrun an enemy. Getting tin and copper was not easy because they are generally not found near each other. Throwing away a recyclable metal is probably rarely done. The reason we see bronzes in the seas is that it could not be recovered and recycled.
This. Much of what we search for was recycled by peoples for thousands of years...like the tools to build the pyramids. They didn't lose them because I didn't lose my tractor.
From my experience, just 2 languages translate in English with a strong "S" pronunciation: Dutch & Greek. The 2 have not much in common, besides being both Indoeuropean, still they sound similar when natives speak English fluently. That's peculiar for me.
it amazes me that Mediterranen Art Experts still do not understand that, as in the Ancient 'Hindu' and Buddhist East, murtis, or sacred 'cult images' were purposely buried on land or cast into the sea to protect them from desecation or destruction by hostile sectarians or iconoclasts. These practices were followed for thousands of years. For example, when the iconoclastic Muslims invaded India, destroying temples and descrating and destroying the sacred Murtis in them, devout Vaishnavas, Shaivites, Devi worshipers and Pure Land Buddhists saved their consecrated Murtis or so-called 'cult images', by burying them or casting them into the nearest body of water.
fantastic presentation, exhausdtive and educaationl. (only if that woman introducing the scientist would not speaks 1/4 of the way through!!! she really likes herself)
If we weren't the bunch of backbiters that we are perhaps the women could have free rein to raise and inspire their children to be as productive and exacting.

Nothing happens for the first six minutes, just skip it.
Except for an intro of the speaker, and a description of what he does. Kind of important.

sad, turning such amazing material into turgid boredom.
Problems understanding?
If you know you're going to be on camera, wouldn't you dress up more than a little? Think Rosamond Bernier.
Are you talking about him, or her? They're both pretty casual. Sexist much?
