Ronnie was raised Catholic, stepped away from religion, then came back after college. A lot of religious symbolism was used in his music but in general his songs are more fantastical and harken to things like sword and sorcery stories, medieval fantasy, science fiction, etc. He's famous for popularizing the "devil horns" gesture in metal, which was originally a symbol that some Italians, including his grandmother, would flash as a superstition to ward away evil. The Last In Line is, in Dio's words, a story about self-discovery. It's about how we do things and sometimes we don't analyze what we're actually doing until after the fact. But also about the huge potential we have within ourselves.
Everybody reacts to Ozzy Black Sabbath, which is an amazing group, but little attention is paid to Dio Black Sabbath which also contains many masterpieces. "Children of the Sea," "Heaven and Hell," "Die Young," "The Sign of the Southern Cross," and "Mob Rules" are some of the classics. Much of Spinal Tap's parodies comes from the Dio Sabbath touring incidents. The wrong size Stonehenge showing up for the stage performance being one of many call backs to Dio Sabbath's live performances.
I've been following this man since he was in Rainbow then Black Sabbath his solo career band did the combination of Black Sabbath that is solo banned in one group called Heaven and Hell that had a great album called the devil you know which every song was fired I could not remember anything Ronnie released that was bad to me he was the best heavy metal rock and roll singer of all time 5.3 with a voice like he was 6:3 may he rest in peace man I'll always miss him
Every single Dio song with Sabbath was a masterpiece. Heaven and Hell and The Mob Rules are, IMHO, the closest any band has ever come to the perfect album. Then, if you take those two albums and combine them with Holy Diver, Last in Line and The Sacred Heart, Dio had a five album streak of just incredible, never to be duplicated songs. Again, my opinion but he started to fall off with Dream Evil and just never could recapture the magic of those earlier days.
@@Dan-k3b yeah Rainbow especially- long epic songs like Stargazer, shorter bangers like Run With The Wolf are my favorites. With Sabbath, I always loved the overall heavy feel of Country Girl, w/ Dio growling it out.
Vivian was more interest in groupies. I read an article once in Kerang! where he openly admitted that Dio female fans were just not as hot ( or plentiful ) as female fans of Whitesnake. I lost all respect for him for that. He was the lead guitarist in the greatest metal band ever but he wanted to chase tail. Loser.
Stargazer by Rainbow. Prior to his solo career, RJD was the lead vocalist of Rainbow (as well as replacing Ozzy in Black Sabbath). You will not be disappointed!
Dio is such an anomaly in metal music. First of all, he was NOT a devil-worshipper, he was a devout Italian Catholic, and the whole "devil horns" metal thing was sort of a gesture he appropriated from his grandmother as it was used among some old-school European Catholics as like, a little gesture implying one was warding themselves from the devil. He said he did it because it was cool. But other than that, he's a tiny dude, barely 5'4" on his best day, but with one of the most powerful voices on stage. An incredibly humble, personable, and genuine man, and also had a thing for really out-there, cryptic songwriting with really vivid lyrics that simultaneously paint really interesting and vivid images but are mostly cryptic or obtuse metaphors. Either way, a great man with a great musical history and one of the most beloved figures in rock, period. Passed in 2010, sadly.
Lots of people have the same misconception about Black Sabbath. Far from devilish drug worshippers, their songs talked about the downside of drugs, like ODs, etc, & how god could save you & don't be seduced by the devil, yada yada. You had to really listen to the lyrics though- so many references to satan & the devil & drugs, plus the album art (which really made a difference in a band's popularity back in the days of vinyl)- anyway all that stuff would make people superficially think, huh, bunch of satanists. Which of course they were not. They never took their own advice on drugs, of course- how they all survived doing such mountains of coke & whatall is a small miracle- but you can't fault them for that, it was the 60s, the 70s, they were rich. Anyway good point about Dio, but even going back to Ozzy, from all accounts they were/are good people, & if naysayers would really LISTEN to their music they'd probably agree.
You need to check out his live performances! Watching him perform is something to be seen for sure!! Heaven and Hell Black Sabbath or Stargazer Rainbow are a great place to start.
Dio has been my favorite singer since this song came out. Check out more Dio and the other bands he was in: Dio - We Rock, All the Fools Sailed Away, Egypt (The Chains Are On), Don't Talk to Strangers, One Night in the City, Black Sabbath - Heaven & Hell, Lonely is the Word, Sign of the Southern Cross, Falling off the Edge of the World. Rainbow - Stargazer you have done already, Kill the King, Gates of Babylon, Temple of the King, Catch the Rainbow. Elf - Hoochie Koochie Woman, Nevermore, Sit Down Honey. He also has two Christian songs ( To Live for the King and Mask of the Great Deceiver) with Kerry Livgren, guitarist and songwriter from the group Kansas (Dust in the Wind, Carry On My Wayward Son). Dio is a rock legend!
Dio is just a ridiculously powerful singer. He brings his own mic to the recording studio, because he has a history of shredding the insides of most mic models a studio is likely to have.
Can't go wrong with Dio. Check out the Dio era Black Sabbath. I recommend Mob Rules for starters. He was also in Rainbow before Black Sabbath. Check out Stargazer
That was a good catch the hand that writes and moves away is the hand of God on the wall of King Nebuchadnezzar from the Old Testament and the last in line is a reference to Christ talking about the first Shelby last in the last Shelby first so basically he is trying to imply that he and his fans are the downtrodden in the last, but they’ll actually be the first ones to go to the kingdom of heaven
Dio was a very devout Catholic, so it’s ironic that he uses all of this heaven hell and purgatory stuff that makes it look demonic when he was actually extremely religious when he passed away he had a full catholic burial with thousands of fans attending the mass
You need to hear Black Sabbath when Dio was singer. Lady Evil, Country Girl, Mob Rules. In the early 80s is when video games started getting big. Arcades were popping up everywhere and we all hung out there or the record shop. Where I grew up, the arcade and record store where right next to each other. The 80s were an amazing time to be a teen
Ronnie James Dio's 1st to do:🤘as he said he got that hand symbol from his Sicilian G'ma who used their 🤘's "Il (il;) Cornuto" curse, so he did 'devil horns' in concerts!
Elf - Gambler Gambler (Dio 60s) Rainbow - Man on the Silver Mountain (Dio 70s) Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell (Dio 80s) Dio - Could Have Been a Dreamer. 4 song reaction, the "rock" history of Dio
Love Ronnie James Dio, what a fantastic rock/metal voice he had, I've got loads of his songs on a playlist! Other great songs are 'One Night in the City', 'Rainbow in the Dark', 'Don't Talk to Strangers' and 'Straight Through the Heart' to name but a few! He was the vocalist for Rainbow ('Stargazer' anyone, what a masterpiece of a song!, not forgetting 'Temple of the King', such a beautiful song) and Black Sabbath, 'Heaven and Hell', love that song so much! So many great songs from the Dio eras with Rainbow and Black Sabbath!
The kid in the video is Meeno Peluce. He co-starred in the tv show "Voyager's" as a young boy and Phineas Bogg (Jon-Erik Hexum) find themselves traveling through history correcting mistakes in time. The show predated "Quantum Leap" which had a similar plot line. Phineas Bogg is based on Jules Verne's lead character Phileas Fogg from "Around the World in Eighty Day." P.S. The first person to successfully travel around the world in 80 days was female journalist, Nellie Bly, who did it in 72 days. This was in 1888, well before air travel. Her biography "Nellie Bly:: Daredevil, Reporter, Feminist" by Brooke Kroeger is a fantastic read.
I love Voyagers I have the series on my shelf, I was going to ask if that was the kid. I never pay attention before at the video, I guess. So insane after all these years.
Sweet new digs my friend ❤. Love me some Dio!!! Ever since drawing the name on my notebooks in high school, circa. 1985. Colored pencil. Red and yellow. It was beautiful man 😂. Love your work! After I get confirmation 😊have, not only agoraphobia, but also possibly bipolar disorder. Testing is still in progress, but I would love to talk to someone who wants to talk about mental health, with a person who has been battling it for over 40 years, without understanding it was the problem 😮. I’m getting closer. Your videos and insights help me cope. Thank you ❤
Dio is Ronnie James Dio’s band. He’s generally considered one of the best metal singers all time and was frontman of an influential band called Rainbow in the 70s. Became front man for Black Sabbath for a couple years after they fired Ozzy, and then had a successful solo career starting in the early 80s. He was also later in a group called Heaven & Hell which was basically just Sabbath with a different drummer. Check out the song Bible Black from them. Strange Highways is another favorite Dio song.
He had a lot of hits with Rainbow, Man on the Silver Mountain is my favorite, he also was lead singer of Black Sabbath after Ozzy left the group. One of my favorite from his Sabbath days is Children of the Sea.
Dio, is my favorite metal singer! What a day! First Dio/ last in line, then quiet riot/ cum on feel the noise! Btw , I think ( cum on feel the noise), was the first, of a very few, heavy metal songs , to ever hit number 1 on the hot 100( most popular , song in the contry)!
Ronnie was in a band called Elf established in 1967-1972 out of Cortland, NY. That band is still together and has music on YT. "The Rods". "Dio" is God in Italian...
Ronnie James Dio's first group was Elf. They were pretty much unheard of and only fanatical Dio fans like me listen to their music. My favorite song for Elf is "Hoochie Koochie Lady."
Ronald James Padavona was his actual name. Dio had one of those voices that stood out & had so much power. He's credited as being the one to popularize the "devil horns" hand gesture, which I heard him say in an interview actually came from his Italian background as having to do with the evil eye or something. (Although Anton Levay had a different take on it as the founder of the Church of Satan 🤔) He dispelled the thought that he was a Satanist, though. Actually, he and Kerry Livgren of Kansas were lifelong friends who had vastly different spiritual views, but complete respect for each other to the very end. Just before joining Black Sabbath, Ronnie actually sang on a couple of Kerry's songs that were Christian and was apparently proud to have been asked to contribute his vocals. In case Kerry's name doesn't ring a bell, he wrote "Dust in the Wind" & "Carry on my Wayward Son." My brother was fortunate to meet Dio at a local radio station prior to a concert back in the solo days & had him autograph something for my sister. He was really cordial just like so many have said about him. RIP Dio.
Dio was the singer of Black Sabbath 1979 - 82 . Heaven & Hell 1980, Mob Rules 81, Dehumanizing 92. He was a vocalist ,78 -82 , 91- 92, 2006- 2010. Dio pass in May 2010
I have forgotten which video or videos he wears it in, an old roommate of mine was a super Ronnie James Dio fan and she met him and gave him necklace he wore in several videos back in the day. And she also got me more into Dio as well.
As a teen in the 80's, I've seen this video so many times!!! But just today. I interpreted the beginning of the video as the kid is delivering something to music executives, and gets a look at that world.
I love Dio! My two favorites are Shame on the Night, and Don't Talk to Strangers. He was amazing in everything he did. If you have a chance, check out his live rendition of the song Black Sabbath with that band off LiveEvil.
I was Lucky enough to see Ronnie James Dio in live concert in 1998! He had No other plans for 2 days. We were so loud and motivated that a 2 plus hour concert turned into a 4 plus hour Show! He was Amazing! ❤
Meeno Peluce played the kid. He was in a ton of movies and tv shows in the late 70's early 80's. He was best know as the kid sidekick to Jon Erik Hexum in the 80's tv show Voyagers.
Dio was a devote Catholic who sang about duality of Evil and good. People who knew him have said he was a good caring person. His interview about religion is a good/ interesting watch.
Ronnie was the lead singer for Rainbow and Black Sabbath before his solo career. Ronnie once said in an interview that that his hand sign that he always made (invented) was from his grandmother, as a ward against evil. The rock world took as satanic.
When this came out, Dungeons & Dragons was just becoming popular. So a lot of Heavy Metal bands took on that style of persona in there music. Also influenced by movies that also came out at that time like Conan the barbarian. It was a sign of the times
the guitar player is currently in Def Leppord......solo Dio with Vivian Cambel is the best solo Dio.....rainbow, black sabbath were all great with him singing!!
Ronnie James Dio was raised as Catholic in the 50's in the East Coast and he had antagonism against religion because he felt that the faith and Church were hypocritical and abusive... He was born Ronald James Padavona, but he changed his last name to 'Dio' when he started singing as a teen to p+++ off religious folks off, I'm guessing ('Dio' or 'Deus' is Latin for "God") Ronnie Dio spent the 60's making R&B/ do wop records before he joined The Electric Elves, the band that became Elf by 1971. He always wrote lyrics about fantasy and his skepticism of religion as a 'savior' coming to offer mankind salvation... In the band Rainbow, he wrote 'Stargazer' about a wizard who promised his followers they would see him fly but he crashes down to Earth instead... He wrote 'Holy Diver' about a mythical savior who abandons his people by jumping into the sea and they still expect him to rise again... In Black Sabbath, he wrote 'Heaven and Hell' about our polarized reality that could be perceived as paradise or torment... Ronnie Dio also wrote some very meaningful songs, like 'Children of the Sea' by Black Sabbath... about mankind polluting the Earth until the Sun disappears... "Computer God" (also Black Sabbath) about the computer age becoming a new religion... 'Firehead' (by Dio) about mass shooters in 1993. When he formed Dio (the band) in 1983, he also added the mascot 'Murray'... the giant figure w/ devil horns that appeared on Dio's album covers until 1987... much like 'Eddie the head' (the mascot of Iron Maiden) The album cover of 'Holy Diver' by Dio showed 'Murray' drowning a chained priest in the bay... and Ronnie Dio was asked why the cover had a monster drowning a priest... He replied, "How do u know it's not a priest drowning a monster?" Ronnie James Dio passed away in 2010 after a battle w/ stomach cancer... His widow Wendy Dio recently released a Dio documentary movie - " Dio: Dreamers never die" in 2022.
His grandmother was an influence as he said she would put hexes on people. Interesting and intelligent person. When he was in Black Sabbath I would recommend checking out the Sign of the Southern Cross. Super heavy and creepy
Having lost most of my digestive tract to colon cancer (I now have an ileostomy which means my waste material goes into a bag on my waist), I feel a special bond to Ronnie James Dio who lost his life to colon cancer. R.I.P.
The line that says, we are the hand that writes and quickly moves away, I have always heard is a reference to automatic writing or psychography. This is supposed psychic ability that allows one to write subconsciously. It is associated with spiritualism and the occult with famous writer's, W.B. Yeats and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle being practitioners of auto writing. Portions of Van Morrison's Album Astral Weeks are also supposed to be from auto writing. I'm not saying I believe this just an interesting note here and it doesn't take away from the song for me at least.
In concert, his logo would be displayed upside down and then flip up. It's rumored his Logo upside down reads Devil. Dio in Latin means God. Some argued he was saying Devil is God by inverting his logo.
You references to Eddie Van cement my faith in your natural ability to know that Eddie is the example by which all other guitarists are measured. Edward, as he preferred to be called, is a modern-day Bach.
I love this track, there’s some epic live versions of it. It’s also a song that I’ve listened to dozens of times but I’ve never seen this video before. Holy Diver is great but I’d take this ahead of it
DIO was the best Sabbath singer, also lead singer in Rainbow. Huge voice for a dude only 5’3”
Also best album/ heaven and hell!

The Last In Line is, in Dio's words, a story about self-discovery. It's about how we do things and sometimes we don't analyze what we're actually doing until after the fact. Well said, kudos.
The Roman church is a complete whore and sits on the gates of hell seen its new symbol ? The lighter bearing Luca .in Latin is lucifer.
Vivian Campbell is a beast

Outstanding second album from DIO, every song is a hit. 🎸🤘 ;)
I've never heard this song from Dio, but I like it. His voice was one of the best in the rock genre
Dio ruled. Vivian Campbell, when he still played and created great guitar riffs was amazing

As a teen in the 80's, I've seen this video so many times!!!
But just today. I interpreted the beginning of the video as the kid is delivering something to music executives, and gets a look at that world.
Look up Ronnie and the Red Caps. It’s his first band WAY WAY back. Totally different music than his later bands. Love all of Dio’s music ❤
I love Dio! My two favorites are Shame on the Night, and Don't Talk to Strangers. He was amazing in everything he did. If you have a chance, check out his live rendition of the song Black Sabbath with that band off LiveEvil.
Evil Eyes and Mystery are the other two popular ones from this album
I was Lucky enough to see Ronnie James Dio in live concert in 1998! He had No other plans for 2 days. We were so loud and motivated that a 2 plus hour concert turned into a 4 plus hour Show! He was Amazing! ❤
Meeno Peluce played the kid. He was in a ton of movies and tv shows in the late 70's early 80's. He was best know as the kid sidekick to Jon Erik Hexum in the 80's tv show Voyagers.
The kid in the video with the red vest is Meeno Peluce. He was in the Amityville horror 1979. And various tv shows and other movies.
dio is credited with coming up with the "rock" symbol 🤘🤘🤘
Yep he did
Love this song and Dio.
Ronnie James Dio is a small man with a massive voice!! He was and always will be the best Metal Singer!!
Love Dio 🤘🏻🤘🏻 One of my favorites of his is Rock and Roll Children.
Ronnie was such a thoughtful and kind man
the last song on this album,,,,,,banger,,,( we rock) 🤘🤘🤘
Dio was a devote Catholic who sang about duality of Evil and good. People who knew him have said he was a good caring person. His interview about religion is a good/ interesting watch.
RJD was the ultimate story teller - and he had one of the best voices ever. RIP
Check out any of his stuff from Rainbow or Black Sabbath too
Ronnie was the lead singer for Rainbow and Black Sabbath before his solo career.
Ronnie once said in an interview that that his hand sign that he always made (invented) was from his grandmother, as a ward against evil. The rock world took as satanic.
My fav Dio track
I always thought the song was about going to Purgatory. Now you are awaiting judgement to find out where you will spend eternity.
DIO - "" The King Of Rock And Rock "" 1980s Hard Rock Classics 🎸 this is one of their heavier hitting Rock Metal Jams you'll really like this one too
Ronnie James Dio was raised as Catholic in the 50's in the East Coast and he had antagonism against religion because he felt that the faith and Church were hypocritical and abusive...
When he formed Dio (the band) in 1983, he also added the mascot 'Murray'... the giant figure w/ devil horns that appeared on Dio's album covers until 1987... much like 'Eddie the head' (the mascot of Iron Maiden)
The album cover of 'Holy Diver' by Dio showed 'Murray' drowning a chained priest in the bay... and Ronnie Dio was asked why the cover had a monster drowning a priest... He replied, "How do u know it's not a priest drowning a monster?"
Ronnie James Dio passed away in 2010 after a battle w/ stomach cancer...
Your studio is looking awesome 👌
The line that says, we are the hand that writes and quickly moves away, I have always heard is a reference to automatic writing or psychography. This is supposed psychic ability that allows one to write subconsciously. It is associated with spiritualism and the occult with famous writer's, W.B. Yeats and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle being practitioners of auto writing. Portions of Van Morrison's Album Astral Weeks are also supposed to be from auto writing. I'm not saying I believe this just an interesting note here and it doesn't take away from the song for me at least.
This song was all over the radio but I don’t remember ever seeing this video ever, where was I ?
Dio was a Catholic. He also sang a song with Christian artist Kerry Livgren (one of the founding members of Kansas) called To Live For The King.
I can hear someone rapping over the verses. It's got a good catchy melodic groove.
In concert, his logo would be displayed upside down and then flip up. It's rumored his Logo upside down reads Devil. Dio in Latin means God. Some argued he was saying Devil is God by inverting his logo.
Dio actually recorded 2 Christian songs on Kerry Livgren's (of Kansas) album "Seeds of Change" and they are awesome songs...
I saw Dio during his solo career in the 80's....still own my Last in Line and Sacred Heart concert shirts! Dio is the godfather of metal! 🤘🤘🤘🤘
You references to Eddie Van cement my faith in your natural ability to know that Eddie is the example by which all other guitarists are measured. Edward, as he preferred to be called, is a modern-day Bach.
RIP DIO! I will always, as I have always love your music.
The new spot is super dope!!! I'm searching my my "Christmas Story" lamp now! This is classic 80s rock to me. 40!
Dio in Rainbow (Deep Purple Guitarist) Dio in Black Sabbath ( Album Heaven and Hell top five metal album ever made ) Dio solo career.... Dio is a GOAT
Ive never heard this song, but i like it and love his voice!
Can recommend Dio, Ship of fools and Dream Evil. Great music, great singing and great lyrics.
Check out Heaven and Hell live performance...I.
Yes and Mistreated live in Munich 1977) with Dio’s band Rainbow). It’s 🔥
His name was really Ronnie Gutendorfer. The band made every lead singer change their last name to Dio.
Look at the family band Liliac they do a cover of this and other Dio songs that is amazing.
Awe the leg lamp, my father in laws favor movie every Christmas time.
Ronnie James Dio was small in stature, but his voice was so dynamic! He was a rock god!
One of the best rock voices.
I love this track, there’s some epic live versions of it. It’s also a song that I’ve listened to dozens of times but I’ve never seen this video before. Holy Diver is great but I’d take this ahead of it
love the christmas story lamp
BLUE OYSTER CULT - " Cities On Flames With Rock And Rock " 1972 Rock Jams 🎸 also recommend it
