    Here is the thing. I have the ql17 which has been professionally CLAed. It works perfectly, and makes great photographs. Period. I travel and like to walk around and the camera could be a target for thieves. If I lost it, well I would be heart broken because I’ve had the camera for almost 20 years - but if I lost a $2k Leica, it would be a full blown heart attack. Getting the picture means getting out there. I would go no matter what the camera costs, but that being said it is a bit more relaxed with a camera I can replace for a few hundred, CLA included.
    Photographers (new ones and inexperienced) think they can’t make good pictures because they cannot afford the right gear. I hope this video slaps them in the face. You can make some fantastic images with rather modest gear. I suggest that if you cannot make a good photo with a ql17 then you will not be able to do so with a Leica.
    Enough said. Great video. Charlie in Virginia

    Really this is just a comparison of the lenses. Camera bodies really only differ in ergonomics and features but don’t really have any impact on colour, contrast and sharpness except for the fact that certain bodies give you access to certain lenses.

    • @memyname1771

      i could argue it sort of does matter because if you watch the shutter in slow motion, the Leica uses a cloth windowed shutter while the canonet uses a leaf shutter, the expose the film in different ways technically, but yeah 85% of the result is on the lens

    @timrpbrown 4 года назад +6

    I'm not sure you're comparing like with like. The ql17 has a (great) fixed lens and a whisper quiet leaf shutter and I love using it for street photo. If you really want a cheap but superb equivalent to the M2 then I would recommend the Canon P. Functionally very close to the M2, and feels nearly as well made. I have all 3 and love them all, but you can't get away from the magical feeling you get holding a Leica. Maybe just me... 🤔

    • @FramesPerSecond

      I would argue that the P is better in many ways than the M2. Auto film counter, way easier to load, rewind crank, no burning pinholes in your shutter. The M2 wins in the important area of viewfinder/rangefinder and mount, but the P is still great there with a nice, bright 1:1 viewfinder and LTM has tons of options. People love to talk about Leica build, but the P is very well constructed too.

    I had been shooting the Canonet for years before I could finally afford a Leica rangefinder. The main reason I bought the Leica M6 was because I needed interchangeable lenses. I now shoot with a 21/35/90mm lens kit.
    Since I have been satisfied with the images produced by my Canonet and my M6, I have never performed a comparison under controlled conditions. Thank you for your comparison.
    Based on my experience and the images from your comparison, I would agree that the two rangefinders are very close in image quality. For me, I find it easier to obtain accurate focus with the Leica. For price, the Canonet is a much better value if all I needed was a 35mm rangefinder with a normal lens.

    Great job on the video! Canonets are great cameras, they often have fungus on the lens though, they seem more susceptible than some old cameras. That said I've managed to take them apart and clean them, and I'm no at camera repairman. I've never had a Leica, but I will at some point, right now my favorite rangefinder from this era is the Yashica Electro 35, the meter works amazingly well, but it's aperture priority only. The lens is much better IMO than my Canonet.

    When I lived in Canada I was given a canon ql17 g111 by my friend who just rescued them from landfill! It was the rarer black version. I put new light seals in and took it to downtown Calgary for it's first time out. The results blew my mind. So sharp and crisp were the pictures I got from it. In my mind Leica is overpriced and snob value. You can save your money and use it to buy many cameras instead of one Leica. I just picked up a canon 7sz with f1.4 canon 50 mm lens. I am looking forward to trying it out and still have change to buy more. My friend just bought in the UK a Leica m7 for around £2500! I bought a bronica ec with three finders and two backs and 3 lenses for less than £350! And the medium format will beat the Leica hands down with those Nikkor lenses. At the end of the day it's what you feel comfortable with. I bet if the focal length was the same on the two cameras you reviewed and you asked us all to guess which camera took which picture we would get it wrong. It's that close. Thanks for a great video.

Of course you can take exceptional photos with ANY camera. There's absolutely no surprise that the images are quite similar. In the end, you need to go for what you want and can afford. Personally, I think the vintage Leica's offer the same quality just as great as the m1,2, and 3! But only for half the price in what you pay for in a Leica M3. So it's a great intro and investment in getting into Leica's without breaking the bank for a new or used M3. If you look hard enough you can find a good Leica iiif and a summitar lens for just under $400 dollars!

    Man, just want to say thanks for a comparison that uses the exact same settings, film and location. To me, owning a Leica is similar to owning a luxury mechanical watch. If output is really all you care about, may as well go for the Canon which performs almost as well, or even a Voigtlander, and slap on the exact Leica lens you want. Similar to how a watch owner would go for a quartz movement if they just cared about accuracy. In these “hobbies”, for me anyways, it’s not just about the output, but owning a piece of beautiful craftsmanship that inspires you to get out and use it.

    I'm sure you probably took this into account, but a lot can happen at the scanning stage when working with a film workflow. Were these scanned by a lab or by you? There is a lot of interpretation that happens by the scanning software that can be manipulated, which many overlook. Typically the scanning software is left to do what it would like which could explain differences in colour tone / warmth, sharpness, and density, and contrast. Great review though - really enjoyed it! - An avid fan of the Canonet lineup and Editor of the Analog Travel Journal (shot largely using the Canonet). Cheers!

    The Leica is the better camera, plus it has interchangeable lenses. The Canon however is very very close, and the money you save is significant. I have a Contax iia which is great, and a few other older (cheaper) rangefinder cameras, however for simple street photography I love my Olympus Trip 35. I've learnt that it's less about the gear and the kudos of your camera, and more about what is a pleasure to use. The Olympus is simplicity itself, and somehow using a basic camera makes me concentrate on operating within the camera's limits. I take my Olympus everywhere no matter what else I'm using, and it lives in the glovebox of my car.

      Would you mind telling me about the older rangefinders you own? I recently started teaching myself repairs on old mechanical cameras, and since taking apart these old Zeiss Ikon Continas I find it difficult to pull away from them :) My Canonet all over sudden does not feel like such a joy to shoot with, purely because the design and feel is less mechanical.. I've been looking at the contax iia as well but its difficult to find originals for a reasonable price atm. Would love to hear what you have in your inventory!

      @@DerSollek I have a Konica S2, Canonette QL19, Olympus RC35, Yashica MG, Ricoh 500G, 2 x Voigtlander Vito Bs, a Kodak Retinette ii, Konica C35, Kiev 4, Zorki 4, and a Beauty Lightomatic iii. I bought them all when nobody seemed to want them and never paid more than £20 for any of them, the Contax excepted. All are great cameras in different ways, the Voiglanders are jewel like lovely but fiddly, same with the very underrated Kodak Retinette. The Olympus is bashed about but takes lovely pictures, however both this the Konica C35 and the Ricoh are a bit small for my hands. The Canonette and the Konica S2 are ponderous heavy things, and the Yashica is downright unreliable. The Beauty is a dark horse, very nice and similar to the Canonette and Konica S2, taking equally good pictures and costing very little. My only premium camera is the Contax iia, utterly lovely to use, however I wish I'd bought the earlier ii as this will mount the Jupiter lenses I have from the Zorki. I can't justify the cost of further lenses for the Contax, however the 5cm f2 Sonnar it came with is nice.
      I have no knowledge of camera repairs beyond light seal replacement, so your fortunate if you have that ability as you can buy untested cameras much more cheaply. If had to say which is best? it would have to be the Olympus Trip 35. It's simple, reliable, no batteries, great lens, lightweight and plentiful. I know it may seem sacrilegious comparing it to the Contax etc, however the results speak for themselves in my experience. Does it class as a rangefinder rather than a point and shoot? Debatable I suppose, but I don't really care, I just love it.

      @@mrstandfast2212 thanks for the elaborate explanation, nice read. You can see that the Leica is sharper, but it’s not $2000 sharper. The rule of diminishing returns kicks in right away here. I love my QL 17 IIIG. Just bought a little red button for its shutter release.

  • @roxspeedg
    @roxspeedg 4 года назад

    The QL17 would be the perfect rangefinder if not for limited 500/s top speed! An often overlooked camera, and my personal go to rangefinder is the canon p. Truly the poor man's Leica imo, takes all the leica screw mount lenses, which also includes modern voigtlander lenses. Also importantly has 1000/s top speed!

    I never liked Superia 400 - too grainy, greens are good but there's nothing much else. Superia 100 was amazing, but sadly discontinued for years. That Canon might be a good camera but I'd always give a nod to something with interchangeable lenses (yep that's me, your mileage may vary), even if it has to be something cheap and not so refined like Zorki or Fed camera. And yes I agree, Leica is ridiculously overpriced...

    „Considering the price gap it‘s really hard to say which one to get...“big BS 😂 just say that one can easily go for the Canon and have a good or equally good rangefinder. You‘re a Leica M2 user and you want to keep it justified to own that camera 😉 Understandable and I don‘t mean any harm!

    @FranciscoRodriguez-ug8gc 4 года назад

    Both are fantastic cameras. The user experience is much better with the Leicas, but the end results are very similar. The Canon is way easier to load, but has a top shutter speed of only 1/500 versus 1/1000 of the Leicas. The Canon is way lighter and smaller so it's easier to carry around. The Leicas have interchangeable lenses. Each has it's pros and cons. Get one or the other or both, you can't lose either way.

    This is really cost battle at the end of the day. The QL17 performs just fine, nothing wrong with it, but the Leica always has the better quality, that’s really more of the lens if anything.
    I own the QL17, and I’ve shot with an M6 before too, and purely on how the camera works, aka the shooting experience, I would go for Leica. It’s just better overall. Not coz of the brand, just the whole flow of it works with me. I wouldn’t mind taking it to harsh conditions because that’s what a camera is for. But obviously, cost is a huge factor. I can’t afford a Leica so I shoot the QL17 and it is a great camera. Really great to use, nothing wrong with it. It just had some things that I’m not a huge fan of. But given that it’s all that I can afford? It works phenomenally.

    This just drives home the point that the camera is just the tool and the photographer makes the art. Practice your craft and hone your skills first and buy gear second. I personally prefer the cooler rendering on the Leica, but I would absolutely hang a photo taken with the Canon on a wall.
