Another fantastic game overview. I certainly appreciate it when Joel zooms in on the board during his explanations. I always look forward to your videos. Can’t wait to get Caylus 1303 to the table
First off, the video quality of your review is top notch. You zoomed in when necessary, and it was super easy to follow (well done!). I love the old Caylus, so I was surprised when you said old Caylus is your first favorite (or maybe 2nd now) favorite game all time. Now I'm even more surprised you're replacing old with 1303. I wonder why BGG rating is so poor for 1303 vs old Caylus?
They should’ve used this artistic design for Castles of Burgundy. And they should’ve used those transparent overlays they used for the Caylus buildings for the dice hexes on the Burgundy estate Mats. Instead of colors on the hexes just put a small transparent symbol such as a boat, animal, building etc. Great review on Caylus though! I was waiting for this to drop as it is your favorite game. Thanks
Caylus is also a long time favorite of mine, which I still have been teaching to modern players. I may have missed it but I don't think you mentioned giving points to players whose buildings have been used by others. I've only played once, with a couple rules misunderstandings. Those are all resolved now. I feel like the endgame of this isn't as exciting. I'd always be so excited to see who'd put those final favors to use. In this game endgame favors don't really seem to be as exciting. That's my main sadness.
I may have missed the multiple points thing. You did mention the variable length, but I don't think you mentioned the final scoring. That specific element is the one that I miss. At least in the game I played, favors at the end didn't offer ANY points. Competing for those favors in the last round meant nothing to us. That's a major difference.
@@fad23 Ohh! Yes, I see what you are saying. Favors are pointless in the last round here yes... but being set up to build a monument on the last turn or make use of (or steal) some of the character abilities kind of makes up for that.
Great Review Joel, as always. Its great pleasure to "revisit" Caylus review, our favorite game. I am glad that you enjoy (even if a tiny bit) 2p more than original. As you may remember I liked 2p in original and like it even more here, though I agree that game earns a lot with more player count. Also replaced original to me in 95%, I miss variable lenght of the game and your own building discount the most. Its a fantastic continuation of tremendous game, done quicker, explained quicker, so it will see the light and warm of the table more often. I also like even more interaction between players with implementation of characters. Brilliant idea. Hope this title will get more love, more attention and thrive. Thank you for sharing your valuable opinions on this one!
Thanks, now I really know, I need to try this one out. Still a little sad, they replaced the old end game trigger, which I also loved, with a fixed number of rounds. Do you see a possibility to houserule this into 1303 again, or would that break the game?
Are all those open buildings confusing for newcomers? Im thinking getting the game, but i dont like caverna for similar reason. Many open tiles from the start. Is there a way to filter your building choices to reduce AP in new players?
This is nowhere near the level of information overload in Caverna. I would suggest for newcomers to just “build stuff”. It’s all useful. It took me a lot of plays of the original to start to peel the layers of the strategy onion. I’d recommend to suggest to the table to just have fun building buildings and the castle and have fun with it.
@@DriveThruReview hmmm, i generally dont like games that need a lot of plays. the group i play with has several games. it take more than a year to play something it again. your excitement for the game making me very interested though. what about game length? i prefer game with fix number of rounds i dont like player pushing game to the end faster. i find this as an improvment. is now the game sorter or longer than original average round count? i dont like games becoming sorter
Had to rewatch this and got hyped again to finally get this game. :) You do mention you strongly dislike playing it with 2 - especially in these times of the pandemic, that's a very likely player-number. What makes you dislike it at that count in particular? Thanks! :)
There's too much tug of war over the provost and the special characters. I'll take this. I'll take this back. I'll move it forward. I'll move it back. It's just not an interesting... environment(?) for me.
That seems very reasonable. I'll have to consider whether it'll hit the table or not, I suppose, because I usually play with 2 and once we're able to play with more people again I have a massive backlog of games I want to get to the table, particularly a bunch of highly rated skirmish games. :D Thank you for your insight!
please rate the 2 player mode! i have agricola, pillars, paladins, gugong, waterdeep, viticulture. can you say that is better than any of those, for 2?
@@DriveThruReview your review was great. i just needed a comparison in terms of 2 players with the titles i mentioned. i supose its just worst from those games for 2
@@ginsbu I would say Yokohama has a lot on common with Caylus. Exclusive worker placement, taking ownership of locations so you are rewarded for others using it, and trading in bundles of goods for points mean you have a lot of similar feeling decision points.
I've been waiting for this one. I was half hoping you'd dislike it so I could save some money! :) I have a couple of questions though... Do they still have buildings that give the owner a resource when used by an opponent? In the original, there's the 4 favor tracks to choose from. Am I right in assuming rds 1-3 you only have one favor choice, based on the randomly selected building? If so, I could see that making favors less interesting. I think I'll need to play it myself still, because I'm still a little skeptical, but the character abilities sound cool and, of course, we love/hate the jerk!
Yes there is still a couple of stone buildings that give the owner a resource. The first favor is typically a nice bonus on top of getting a new character ability I think. Once you get into rounds 4+ they get better which makes it an interesting choice because by then the new characters are done and you have a decision to get a nice bonus vs taking a character from someone. For me, the variability from game to game makes up for choice in game. Some early favors give you extra workers for example so it becomes more about preventing others from getting the favor than choosing between favors as you did in the original.
This review by this reviewer was 100% the one I've been looking forward to. I wasnt even going to consider the game until I saw this. Thanks Joel!

Not real sure to be honest. Most people I know like the old one better (for what, I have no idea) >:)

While your reviews tend to run a little long, they are among the best out there, so are well worth the time. Thank you for the effort.

I mentioned that the main thing I miss was the variable end game. I think 1303 makes up for it though.

I’m not really sure how you could work it into this game tbh

Hi Joel can you answer why the new board starts at bottom and works up?
"Graphic design decisions"? :) I am guessing they did to keep the flow of the turn in an easier to learn way.
Hansa Teutonica is player determined end game
Yes it does. It's a rare(ish) thing.
Yokohama too. Very different game though. It’s something I like in games also.

Talking about Hansa Teutónica, what a game. Superior to Caylus, specially with Britannia map
Having never played either version which one would you recommend I get?
This one :)

what is your top game of all time?
Warhammer: Age of Sigmar... Second place "was" Caylus.
Now 5% Cayless.
