  • On this episode of Crazy Will Tech Show, I go though some frequently asked questions on the 2011 Mac Book Pro GPU fix. So I did a video a year ago telling people How to fix 2011 15'' Macbook pro GPU problem. To my surprise it helped a lot of people. I had no idea how many people were in the same boat I was in with the 2011 Mac Book Pro GPU problem. But, not everyone found there salvation with my video and I was answering the same questions over and over again. So, I thought I would put this video together to answer some questions. That way, if I miss your comment you can still get your 2011 Mac book pro up and nobody will fall through the cracks.

Thank you! Thank you! My 2011 MBP had it's first GPU problem last week (booted to grey screen :| )and I'm so glad to find your video. Followed the instructions and at first the fans always ran, backlight on keyboard stopped, battery indicator button stopped, no light on charge cable, couldn't get battery (3rd party battery) level on Menu Bar in addition to no video out via Mini Display Port. Took a chance to reset SMC and was prepared to do all instructions again, but it all came back to normal except the video out. Back to lovin this old mac.

Thank you so much for your original video which has got my 2011 17inch MacBook Pro up and running again - very much appreciated. Not sure if mentioned below, but if you want to use a separate Monitor, connecting a second screen using a USB display adaptor still works - its ok for Office Apps & internet (but accept not suitable & too laggy for games). Quick question - if I now replace my ageing hard-drive with a new SSD (with the latter having a clean install of High Sierra), will I need to reapply this GPU fix again from scratch - or will the current fix on my machine & the switch to Intel Graphics stick, despite a change of hard-drive?. Thanks again Andy

    Hi Will
I had problems with my Macbook Pro 2011 and followed your fantastic tutorial.
Really a great job you did and it really helpt!
I got the machine running again and it works fine.
But now I run into the following problem.
Every time I shut down the Macbook and power it off, I run into the same problems as before and have to run the procedure from your tutorial all over again!
Can you help me with this problem, are there any other procedures to solve this problem?
I would appreciate your support very much and hope you can advice me how to continue.
I am a loyal visitor of your “Will Tech Show” and living in the Netherlands.
    Hope to hear from you.

Many thanks! For those redoing this because of mistakenly updating, you may already have the old AMDRadeonX3000.kext in an already created directory "Extensions-off"; you must delete that old kext file to move the current kext file into that directory (you can't overwrite the old one using the given command). Alternatively, make a new directory (I used "Extensions-off1") and move the current kext file into that directory.

    • @Elvioso

once my GPU failed it wouldnt do any external display anymore. Also it was a USB display that fried my GPU in the first place as I was running dual monitors and my mac would overheat, crash and reboot. My mac now will no longer boot even after taking the steps provided by the video. Idk what to do now

This is the best fix I did it like 6 months ago and worked perfectly. I updated the mac and messed up the fix. I did it again, now the graphics are working perfectly but is not loading after the apple logo. If I boot into safe mode starts to flickers and its very slow, then freezes. Ive followed your tutorial and it fixed my macbook pro, thank you for that! But sometimes I have to shut down my computer, then when I reboot it most of the time the screen gets stuck as if the graphics cards was crapping out like previously. I'd try to reboot it every few days and somedays i get lucky and I'm able to pass the booting stage. I was just wondering if I have to follow your video tutorial everytime this happens or if theirs an easy way to bypass this maybe with a command? Just install W10 directly via USB onto a different drive. It worked for me - AND Windows 10 totally bypasses the "bad' GPU if it ain't working. Same thing with installing Ubuntu.
After W10 is installed, run Win Update to get the Intel GPU drivers. NOTE: Windows WILL not install a lot of MacBook Pro drivers unique to Apple crap. BUT .. if you need to run Windows 10 .. just get a W10 laptop. Unlike Apple, Used Win 10 laptops can be gotten on eBAY for $100 (not the newest, but they do run W10 with no problem), Instead of paying $5,000 for a MacBook Pro and installing W10 via Bootcamp.

may need to pram/smc reset before doing this (shft + ctrl + option + power (your magsafe power light will flash)) & pram is Cmd + option + p + r at boot, hold and it'll reboot) Then cmd + s to single user. That above line disables amd graphics. so then you can command + r to recovery and disable SIP with $ csrutil disable ; reboot -> cmd + r back into recovery (this ensures it disables because it requires a boot to either recovery or the OS to go into effect) check with $ csrutil status. now you can $mv AMDx3000 and others (leave the two legacy ones and the 6000 one) out of the folder. (i installed the grub method for my bootloader btw) and made it permanent, you should be able to boot into OS X and do this. To fix the power display b.s. in high sierra, the AppleMux kext from an earlier version was used. found here: forums.macrumors.com/threads/disable-a-failed-amd-gpu-on-a-2011-macbook-pro-grub-solution.2087527/page-8#post-27525770 posts number 178 and 179 by nsgr. everything is back to normal now. i had to redo this and forgot how and it took me like 3 hours after this last update, but whatever. i bookmarked it this time and i could do it in like 15 mins now.

Will what are your thoughts on the oven trick, putting it in the oven at a low temp to melt the little steel balls attaching the AMDRadeon gpu to the motherboard, that have become "loose" and no longer touch the circuit? Have you or anyone you know, or anyone in the comments, tried this? Were you successful? Gonna have to look up the article again. If anyone can find it lmk. Hey I think the guy who sold me my MBP 2011 did the kext fix but I updated the computer... Now when I try to alter kext files it says "operation not permitted" is there any way I could ask for a solution?

    • @CrazyWillTechShow

You would have to go back a couple versions and it should work. How bad the screen?

    • @thekrashlo
      @thekrashlo 2 года назад

@@CrazyWillTechShow I got it working. When you go over the step to disable csrutil you say "power down the machine" so I hit the kill switch and disabling the csrutil was not completed. Upon further review I tried entering reboot and hitting single user mode upon reboot, followed the steps and it worked without a hitch fully updated.

I would say always update to avoid vulnerability issues, but plane to go through the process again. Buuut... There's is always a chance that after update fix will not work anymore (maybe due to some security improvements), so it's a risk.

I can get to Recovery Mode (revolving globe) select wi-fi network and progres bar below globe loads fully. Then I get Apple logo with it's progress bar and about half way through screen flips to solid blue screen. Waited and nothing happens after that. Is my MBP completely Finished or I'm missing any steps?

After numerous trays I have somehow got through to recovery an was able to get to utilities and terminal and to Disable csrutil. Ones reboot in Single user mode typed all 3 commends lines. After taping Enter after each commend I got Operation not Permitted. long story short, I can't reboot my computer into normal operation to check if graphics are working or not.

Hey Crazy Will. Yes... I've got the MBP early 2011 Model A1286... bought it for €400 and maxed it out with 16GB ram and a ssd 500 from Samsung... worked fantastic and, because I've got music software which runs only on Snowleopard... I've got 10.6.8 installed by a company called Macpartner.
However I ran into the problem that you talked about in your first video just after one day of doing a Video project for my fathers 75th Birthday... the next day... blanc white screen and fans that kept running faster and faster and faster... OH NOOOOOOOOO!!!
Now I've followed your video and used the written down link. It worked after starting up. I've got my login screen back and once logged in, I saw my background and all the programs.
But then it happened at a restart... I told OSX to restart, just to see if it kept working... and it didn't. Once again the white screen appeared and fans where turning faster after a short while.
My question is, do I need to perform this entire fix everytime, which to me sounds a little bit rediculous, or did I mis out on a step?
I didn't update or upgrade the OSX since all the programs installed only work on 10.6.8.
I hope you can help me out here and thanks for helping.
    Greetings from the Netherlands, Niels

try these steps in this order
Enter recovery Mode with CMD, P & R
      type the command: nvram fa4ce28d-b62f-4c99-9cc3-6815686e30f9:gpu-power-prefs=%01%00%00%00
      enter
      type: reboot
      enter
on reboot go into internet recovery mode , press Command-Option/Alt-R
      you will see a globe
when this is done, find Utilities at the top of the menubar
go into terminal and type: csrutil disable
      enter
      then type: reboot
      enter
Upon reboot, go into Recovery Mode, CMD, P & R
      Enter Single User mode
boot up holding down the CMD and S keys
      5 - Check a disk
      fsck -fy
      6 - Mount a root filesystem with read/write permissions
      mount -uw /
7 - Make a directory to store the AMD drivers in case you'll need them in future
      sudo mkdir /AMD_Kexts/
8 - Move the AMD drivers
      sudo mv /System/Library/Extensions/AMD*.* /AMD_Kexts/
9 - Remove the AMD drivers cache)
      sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kext.caches/
10 - Just in case OS X will be dumb and will not recreate this directory, we are creating it for OS X
      sudo mkdir /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kext.caches/
11 - to update the timestamps so that new driver caches - without AMD drivers - will be definitely rebuilt
      sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions/
      REBOOT
to check if it has worked go into Finder, click on your hard drive device on the left find and there should be a folder called AMD_Kexts containing 30 different kext files
