    I will say that I used this company to repair my GPU. They are great and will repair anything that's wrong on the motherboard. I damaged the sound card connection and they repaired it with no additional charge. It was a 7 day turn around but as soon as I paid for the repair they shipped the package out to me the same day. I received the package the next day. Great service! I would recommend.

    It's quite unfortunate that AMD never actually fixed the defect with these Radeon HD 6xxx series chipsets, allowing these machines to be repaired properly and permanently. Because of this, any "new" GPU chipset you solder onto one of these 820-2915/2914 boards is simply going to fail again, and last no longer than the original GPU chipset that came on the board. As such, the only solution that is actually 100% permanent is to completely disable the dedicated GPU via a hardware modification to bypass the gMux IC (which handles the dynamic GPU switching on these systems). Doing this will get the system to a point where it does not detect the AMD GPU at all, and runs exclusively on the Intel HD Graphics 3000 integrated graphics. I've done this to dozens of machines now, and it, by far, is the best solution for this issue.

    • @PowerbookMedic
      @PowerbookMedic  6 лет назад

      Yeah a bypass is the longest lasting solution for sure. We have done a few of these as well. However, some software will not run on the Intel graphics card and requires the faster Nvidia chipset. Thats the main problem with a bypass unfortunately.

    • @dosdude1
      @dosdude1 6 лет назад +4

      All software should run just fine on the Intel HD Graphics... It's no different than a 13" MacBook Pro at that point, which don't have dedicated graphics to begin with. As long as you have full graphics acceleration in the OS, then all software should work no issues.

      @@dosdude1 Might it last a bit longer if one somehow manages to use it with the bottom cover removed? In other words, is it only a heat issue that causes the 6750 to fail or will it fail anyway?

Since I can't get to the latest mac OS, I'm debating whether to just take any repair budget and put it towards a mac mini with the M1 chip instead. I used my 2011 MBP from 2011 until 2018 when I bought a 2017 MBP. Until then I had never ever had a laptop last that long in my life. excellent video. my 2011 15" MBP just failed with what seems the obvious GPU problem. I get the Apple logo and the boot progress bar and then the screen goes gray. Just entered a work order and will be shipping out to you first of next week. This after Apple certified repair center told me that they no longer repair these because there aren't any more parts from Apple and that I should just scrap the unit. What a waste. I had upgraded to an SSD, 16 GB and a new battery and it was like a blazing fast new computer. Spending $350 to get my machine back is a LOT better than spending upwards of $12-1500 for a new (used) MBP.

    Bugger! I have this board (820-2915 A) and I am been getting the same symptoms of the green lines. I have an early 2011 MBP Silver bezel (although it says late 2010 in about) that was having graphic issues a few years ago. Luckily I managed to get the M.Board replaced within the Apple recall program just before it ended. They fitted this board.
    It has been running fine until December when I started to get intermittent immediate power offs. Roll onto early Jan and I started to get a grey screen and eventually see the green lines appear upon start-up.. I was hoping that it was the capacitor for the frame buffer but upon further digging and seeing this video I have come to the conclusion that the problem is the GPU. I need to decide whether a GPU replacement with be worth it for me for a device this old.

    • @PowerbookMedic
      @PowerbookMedic  5 лет назад

      There really is no way to give an approximation of the time it will last as everyone's environment and definition of moderate or heavy usage varies. The main issues with these units is that they overheat which causes the GPU to fail. If you are aware of this and take steps to keep the unit cooler it will last longer than say if you are doing video editing on a blanket.

    So if suddenly a blue screen of death (with black vertical lines) appears with failure to boot, that's an IGPU issue? How much would a replacement be for that, and how much to replace the whole logic board?

    • @PowerbookMedic

      Etan Grant Yes, that is a GPU issue. The cost to replace the logic board depends on the processor speed. You can check out our refurbished ones on our website, www.powerbookmedic.com

    Since they no longer are replacing the discrete AMD GPUs and are doing a bypass instead, you need to know that if your are dual-booting into Windows that Windows will no longer work, since it uses only the discrete GPU. You can, however, install Parallels and continue to run Windows using only the internal Intel GPU. This is not a plug for Parallels, just something to know.

If the machine is left to do video processing on bed sheets for example, the life will be significantly less than someone who uses the machine for casual browsing at a desk. If someone is doing video editing 24 hours a day, the life will be less than someone who is just using the machine casually a few hours a day.

    Howdy. I have a 2011 17" MBP that has a bum GPU. I had the thing warrantied a few years back before apple was about to end the program. They actually replaced the mobo/gpu/screen and it was great for a while (switched from the original nvidia to AMD saying it would be fine and that the issue was with the nvidia GPUs). But sadly I've ran into a similar issue where the AMD GPU is failing. I've disabled the AMD GPU via software, which is great for every day use, but since I'm just running on the Intel GPU now, it's certainly not great at running anything that involves graphics. My question is, if I send my macbook into you guys to fix, do you do anything above and beyond replacing the GPU to ensure that the problem does not happen again? As I understand it, it's either a design flaw in the GPU itself or a cooling issue with the MBP causing these GPUs to fail. Thanks in advance.

      I believe Apple's process isn’t to replace the GPU but to replace the board and re-serialize it. We do use newer manufactured GPUs. However, I wouldn’t say that under heavy GPU usage it will last forever. These boards / GPU’s were recalled through Apple because of it being a flaw in design. They generate too much heat. I'd pay 20 bucks just for your opinion on a 2011 Late 13" MBP that has an intermittent pixelating three beeps failure that I think I've been able to whittle down to either a bad SODIMM slot or a bad CPU memory controller. I've taken everything apart, cleaned, got video of the failure, booted with alternate ram ports loaded, bought new ram, tested without batt, HD and variations of that - about to try a raw boot from a USB of a diff OSX to see if it affects it. How can you get a bad CPU Memory controller? Logic board was replaced in 2016 already, so it's dead as a do-do but I really want to know what the error is (Appreciate fairly impossible to pinpoint without testing rails etc). Still will to pay for opinion though, I hate throwing away good kit.

      @PowerbookMedic  4 года назад +1

      3 Beeps is a ram failure. If you've tried new ram and you're sure it's good, try one chip at a time in each slot. If it works in one slot and not the other then you have a bad ram bay and likely need to replace the logic board.

    where in the world are you ? I did a big mistake of trusting a company on eBay. They took the GPU out replaced it found out it did not work and sent the MBP back with the old GPU left out. So no GPU on the logic board. Same symptoms as you just have shown. Can you help? I am in England

    Apparently my gpu is gone,. It failed in October of last year, the second gpu replaced by Apple (4 years later) . My screen shows the line but also it flickers and the Apple logo doesn’t shop up clearly but rather in 3 pieces. Could it be more than the gpu? It also keeps rebooting. I would rather spend on a gpu, sell it and buy a new MacBook Pro. Do you sell this gpu part? Or can I send it to to you have it fixed?

      I do not know of a company in Europe or Germany that does these repairs but I also haven't spent a good deal of time looking, so I'd Google it and see if you can find anyone . Our company does accept international repairs however. If you were going to ship us the board internationally I would recommend sending the board only and not the entire machine. This saves in shipping fees and customs/brokerage fees.

      Do you ever bake the PCB before desoldering the old gpu to prevent delimitation on the board ? do you bake the Gpu itself before ?
      Nice job
      Also did not see u apply flux before installing the new gpu ? Did you ?

    • @PowerbookMedic
      @PowerbookMedic  6 лет назад +1

      Yes. The profile we use on our BGA machine preheats the board and chip before heating up enough to solder it in place. Also, yes, we did apply a thin layer of flux before putting the chip on. Sorry we did not show that in the video.

    These 2011 macbooks will not work longterm sadly & its just a temporary fix! just add the board in the oven & put it back into the machine make sure you clean it & re add the paste. Your machine will work. You can also use a heat blower for 7 min moving it around. Its a easy process & its free. But once gpu has gone its pointless of fixing it. You better off buying a 2012 model which these gpu issue was fixed, instead of paying for getting it (macbook 2011) fixed for that price. You are wasting your money guys! Reflow does not work guys ) THESE MACBOOK PRO 2011 ARE FOR THE BIN SADLY :( Also new chips are impossible to get as they are discontinued and are no longer made! )
    Most so called new GPU chips are fake copies & hence will not last. Again these nonsense reflow does not work )

    • @PowerbookMedic
      @PowerbookMedic  6 лет назад +5

      If you just heat up a board (such as in an oven or using a blower), that will just reflow the GPU, and yes reflowing is a very temporary solution. You can usually expect 1-3 months with a reflow. However, replacing the GPU, such as we show in this video, will provide a much longer term solution.

    • @ebruvlogs2514

      @@PowerbookMedic I did that & lasted me 7 months not a very long solution. I decided to purchase a 2012 macbook that does not have same problem £400 was worth it ) These laptops are for the bin its pointless as the air system is rubbish & will heat up again with gpu issue. Its not good for film editors or high use that uses gpu a lot. Gauranteed to fail again :(

      I agree another RUclipsr Dosdude1 has good video on fixing all kinds different apples and 2011 15-17' where just flaw machine due to fault ATI graphics that was never 100% fixed even after replacement or replaced chip. When mine finally failed i just upgraded to 2012 with nvidia and havn't looked back you also get usb 3.0 support then

      @@rrcoster exactly only problems is people still believe the 2011 macbooks will work longterm. But sadly its due to no space inside the machine hence over heating up the machine that causes gpu failure. High work like editing photos, videos & even watching youtube will cause your gpu to fail again & again. There is clearly no fix to these 2011 Macbook Pro Note books (laptops) sadly :(
