First time here. Good video. I just subbed. Thank you, I'm tired of paying top price for my lawn and getting bottom results. If the "professional" can't do it. Become a professional!
Thanks for subscribing👍most of the lawns in my neigborhood use a professional service. Some look worse and some look about the same as mine. It seems to all come down to how Bermuda is mowed and taken care of and less about the products or services that treat it. Thanks again and good luck this season👊
I'm down on the south side if I figure where you are. I mow every other day but it's therapy for me better than the doc. But thanks for the tips I have folks asking what I'm doing 😅 mainly the lady next door
Just moved into a house that has Bermuda from a house that had St. Augustine, so its definitely a change for me... I currently have my deck set at 2.75", but still scalping areas of the Bermuda... Should i raise it to 3.17"? Its the next slot up on my Ryobi... Also, is the Bermuda grass looking brown after i cut it because i cut it too low?? Im so confused... :(
If you are scalping I would try raising the deck or consider “resetting” the height of cut by mowing lower and bagging then maintaining at your preferred height. You might also need to mow more often Bermuda grows aggressively and usually needs to be cut twice per week during the growing season. Good luck on your new lawn!
So I cut my watering down actually and cut it shorter. I live in Texas but I’m doing 3 days a week early morning 30min a station. I just got a rain gauge so will see if it’s enough in this heat.
7:18 i dethatched it and then scalped it. I couldn't believe how much dead dry grass I had. It's been two weeks and I've watering it with sprinklers and by hand in areas where sprinklers don't reach. Grass slowly getting green, but allot of brown grass still and some places have dark brown like maybe fungus and I do know I saw bugs after dethatching so maybe that's it. I'm going to use a bug remover and then fertilize it the next day also going to put down a layer of healthy top soil with some manure in it to help with soil conditions. I live in southern California where we have clay soil, and it gets extremely hot like 90s and low 100s in July and August. Right now we're seeing 80s and low 90s (June). We don't see allot of weeds just a few that I pull up, but going to use a weed and feed like you suggested to control it. I saw a video on Bermuda Grass where they treated for Grubs(insect) so I think I might have them in grass, so I'll lay some Grub and insect remover down. I thought I would wait until grass starts to green and then Aerator it to help with water reaching roots better. I liked your video and realized I'm not watering enough. The ground in high lump areas(just a few areas) is really hard and looks like it needs fresh soil there, but I think just needs aerator and water. Wish me luck !
Good luck! Sounds like you have a lot going on. I typically don’t use weed and feed on my Bermuda just fertilizer and spot spray a for weeds with a “safe for lawns” type herbicide. Grub control is good if you have had issues with them. Thanks for watching 👍
I heard that golf courses dethatch once a month. I started doing that too on my rye grass lawn and it actually works! My rye is 1.5 inches at highest cut and it looks great. I’ve even had it at 1 inch and it still looks great I’m going to renovate early spring next year and throw some Bermuda and try to keep it at half inch. Good luck with your lawn! Hope it all works out for you
Well that really depends on what part of SC you live in! Step one is applying Pre emergent if you haven't already. When you are starting to green up and soil temps are rising you can think about scalping (most people on youtube do this too early) If you don't plan to scalp you just needs to make sure to mow a notch below your normal mowing height for the first mow. If you haven't had a soil test use any turf fertilizer and follow instructions. Don't apply it until your lawn is greened up and growing though. Good luck! Thanks for watching.
I water my Bermuda in the drought once every three weeks for 1.3 hours. It's greener than all of my neighbors around me, and the area gets a lot of sun from the West.
It’s a 42 pound bag and covers 15000 sq ft at bag rate. For my Bermuda lawn I applied half the bag, just slightly under bag rate with great results. The stonewall pre emergent is a 50 pound bag and covers 14800 sqft, I just follow the instructions on the bag which varies based on your location. I am using a cheaper fertilizer now. Just follow the instructions and don’t over apply. Thanks for watching👍
Great info thanks . I just put Bermuda sod down in my backyard and some sections look like they are turning brown should I be concerned , can I use a starter fertilizer like Scotts Or should I just leave it alone ??
Thanks! Make sure to water it frequently. I would recommend checking out Budget Lawns channel. Lots of great info on there for new sod care. Appreciate the comment and thanks for watching!
great video with helpful information! Do have any videos that talk about putting Bermuda sod down? i have a backyard full of fescue that i want to convert over to Bermuda, but i want to know the "how and when" part of that. i would appreciate it.
Thank you glad to help. I don’t have much experience with sod, unfortunately my backyard is fescue due to heavy shade, wish I had the sun back there to put down Bermuda like you plan. Check out @budgetlawns channel, he has quite a few videos on Bermuda sod. Good luck!
Thanks! According to the label 2 times per year max at 4oz/1000 sq ft. That is for a "blanket" treatment where you are covering the entire lawn. Spot spraying can occur more but wait 2 weeks after you have sprayed a weed before spraying again. I typically spot spray but if you have a entire lawn of weeds a blanket application may help you get them under control just wait for the Bermuda to come out of dormancy first. Thanks for watching👍👍
I normally mulch when I mow, but I was thinking the last time I mowed because I had so many weeds that I bagged the last couple times because I felt like if I wasn’t mulching it with the weeds I was cutting it would help me control? Also, I see your recommendation for the fertilizer that I got some baby grass that have taken growth in a large bare spot. Do you think that same type of fertilizer to help it take off now for different concentration?
Bagging is really just a personal preference. I don’t do it regardless of weeds. When you return clippings they contain nitrogen and moisture which is beneficial to the lawn. Hit those weeds with a “safe for lawns” type of herbicide. As far as fertilizer if you didn’t do a soil test a standard type of lawn fertilizer will work fine for your lawn. Right now watering is a big focus in much of the country. If you aren’t getting a lot of rain be cautious with the fertilizer and herbicides. Good luck!

Very good stuff! I hope you post more. So, any interest in reel mowing? I bought one (a reel mower) last weekend and have been using it in my backyard and it’s really impressive! I’m easing the HOC down a bit with each mow. I’m at about an inch now. Still green, very carpet-like. I see you get good info from UGA. I’m in central Alabama and Auburn has been very helpful for me. Great local extension office; very helpful. And I agree totally about the watering (from experience and extension advice) and fertilizing. Thanks for the video!
Thank you! Would consider reel mowing in the future but for now time just doesnt allow. Actually hoping to upgrade to a lawn tractor due to massive amounts of leaves in the fall. Will definately do a few videos to show that! Thanks for commenting and good luck with your new reel mower, they are great for Bermuda!
This is the first video of yours ive stumbled upon. We just moved into a home with a frint yard sprinkler system and a Bermuda lawn that im totally new to. Any video suggestions for beginners in middle-East GA?
Congrats on that new home. I did this video on the calendars I use for guidance on my Bermuda: ruclips.net/video/8H1CB2Gtbxs/видео.html Following guidelines from UGA is a great simple start. Just stick to the basics: Mowing, Watering, Fertilization and Weed control. A lot of the youtube channels just try to sell you stuff and give recommendations that may or may not be needed. Good luck!
@@lanieroutside thank you! I believe we have St Augustine in the back yard well. Also, I'm starting a compost pile (we have pet rabbits so we generate a lot of hay, pine pellet dust, and dooky), and I had a spot chosen to place it, but once I began clearing the area to prep it, i discovered some grit akin go kitty litter and I am thinking perhaps the previous owner was dumping motor oil/litter next to the shed. Do you recommend any soil testing services to be sure?
Lawn is looking amazing 2 questions is that Inaba Shidare Japanese Maple? The other questions is I am far South Georgia should I make any changes from what your doing?
Thanks! Not sure on the variety, it is a small Japanese maple, doesn’t get any larger. It was here when we bought the house. You will use the same program following Uga guidelines but your timing may be different than mine as you have a longer growing season. Your Bermuda will come out of dormancy earlier and stay green longer in the fall. Your spring pre emergent may be a little earlier and fall a little later. I stop fertilizing in August, you may need to fertilize in Sept for example. It’s all based on soil temps and when your lawn is actively growing but the same basics still work! Thanks for watching and good luck this season👍
I don’t use liquid fertilizer products or reel mow. There are plenty of other RUclipsrs that do! Just a busy homeowner here that sticks with the basics. Good luck this season!
Your welcome! I’ve never had a thatch problem with my Bermuda. If you wanted to use one of those vericutter style machines so you don’t pull up all the stolons 👍
Hello, great video. I subscribed to keep up. First time owning a Bermuda grass lawn. It’s been 4 months since the sod was installed. I’ve been mowing but every time I mow, the lawn looks yellow and patchy, like I cut off the green. I mow to keep the grass at about 2 inches. Is this normal? Also, going into the winter. What should I do? I see some people dethatch and overseed. Season here in Texas is in the mid to high 70s. Thanks!
Thank you, with new sod don’t do much until next year, no pre emergent and don’t de thatch and definitely don’t overseed ever! If the temps get cool enough in your area the Bermuda will go dormant and brown. Once temps warm again in spring it will green back up! Congrats on that new lawn👍
Well Thanks for the advice I have Bermuda lawn in Fl and I am struggling to keep it green when I cut, I have the same machine you have.. in which letter are you usually cut ?
It varies throughout the season, I start with F in the spring when it is greening up, then move up to E for early summer. Then I will move up to D and Even C if I can't keep up with mowing! D and E are the best for my lawn which is mostly common Bermuda so it looks best a little taller than the newer hybrids. Thanks for watching!
I like e in the piedmont region of western NC, and my rye/rescue lawn is getting clobbered by the heat. Do you think Bermuda would do well here? I'm thinking of trying it, at least for my front lawn. I am new down here and have had good luck up north with rye/rescue and blue, but down here I wonder if Bermuda wouldn't work better? Thank s for the great video!
@@NYNick49 It might if you have the budget as most Bermuda is established by sod. If you have shade Bermuda isn’t a good choice. Zoysia can be established from seed and has a little more shade tolerance and less maintenance than Bermuda. I had good luck in the transition zone with Lesco transition pro grass seed. Your best resource would be NC state extension office. They will have recommendations on what is best in your region. Good luck
Leaving clumps of grass clippings is bad. Leaving fine clippings that are mulched up is good and reduces the nitrogen needs. They will decompose quickly but you have to mow often to achieve this. The only time I bag is when I spring scalp, reset the height of cut or just need the clippings for my compost pile. Great question👍
Thank you so much for your videos. I just moved to Cherokee County. I just scalped my Bermuda lawn and noticed some red (fire?) ants emerge and create a hill right away. How do you manage fire ants or pest control on your Bermuda lawns? Thanks
Glad to help! I have had good luck with the ortho orthene in the past, just spot treat the mounds. You could also use a granular like Bayers total insect control. I haven’t had too many pest problems the past few seasons after treating them the first two years here. Good luck this season!
@@arielrodriguez6980 during the growing season you feed as often as monthly. May through August for me. Depends on how warm your area is. I typically don’t feed every month but aim for 3 times about every 45 days give or take seems to keep my Bermuda nice and green
@@AlejandroSYepez just a regular lawn fertilizer works. It is likely too late in the season to put any nitrogen down on a Bermuda lawn. Right now a pre emergent herbicide is more benidicial. Use one with no Nitrogen, I used a 0 0 7 product on my lawn last week
I need help with my lawn. I got Bermuda sod laid about 4 months ago and it was doing amazing for the first 2.5 months. Then started dying. Was watering it every morning and night for about 5 min each quadrant. Backed off watering and it seemed to continue to brown and start becoming crunchy…. Now I have a horrible looking lawn. Mowed the rest down, thatched it, watered it, laid compost mixed with top soil and added seed with my spreader. 18 days and nothing yet. I’m not sure how to water it either after doing that work I explained. I’m in the desert
Wow not sure what happened but it sounds like you may not have watered it enough. I don’t have much experience with sod but would pull up a piece to see if it rooted and is indeed dead. Also look for pests as that could be an issue or even disease. Good luck and maybe try reaching out to whoever installed your sod for advice.
I need help. I'm not sure what to do first. I live in the south and my grass is not growing , it has brown patches and it has weeds. My question is. What should I do first to get my lawn to look like yours? Do I follow those step during the hottest months?
First off make sure you know your grass type. If you have Bermuda these basics can help. You just have to kind of start in the middle. If I was in your situation right now I would make sure it is getting enough water, then spray for weeds with a safe for lawn product like spectracide weed stop for lawns then apply an app of fertlizer. You could go with an organic like milorganite if you are new to fertilizing it wont burn the lawn. Then just be patient and keep up with mowing/watering. You should see improvement. Good luck and thank you for the question!
When your lawn is actively growing and mostly greened up. Soil temps above 65 degrees and rising. The timing of this will depend on your location for me usually Mid April or Early May for Fertilizer. Thanks for watching!
Just read a good article on the uga extension website, looks like your options are limited, I have not had these so would recommend reaching out to your local extension office for guidance. Good luck!
Bermuda will bounce back just give it some time and adjust your height of cut up above where you cut it. More frequent mowing may help in the future. Thanks for the question and good luck the rest of the season!
@@dianes2300 my temps don’t consistently reach 100 in North Ga. We do hit mid to upper 90s consistently and I keep feeding it unless we aren’t getting rain. Like right now 👍
This is an existing Bermuda lawn, only products I used last year were: Lesco Stonewall pre emergent, Vigoro 29-0-4 Fertilizer and Round up for lawns post emergent weed control( NOT REGULAR Roundup!) So far this year same products but switched fertilizer to Walmart Expert Gardener 30-0-4. Good luck this season! Thanks for watching
I have a common Bermuda lawn and got the crab grass under control for the most part, but having trouble with quite a bit of what I think is nutsedge. (Lighter color, faster growing than the grass) Do you have a specific pre or post emergent for that? I’ve read it’s tough to get rid of and that you shouldn’t pull by hand, as it spreads seeds. Broad weed killer isn’t touching it.
I use round up for lawns, the northern version. It is also labeled for Bermuda and works on nutsedge. It will yellow the bermuda for a while but it recovers. Just make sure to get the product labeled safe for lawns. If that doesnt work you could go to domyown.com and order some sedgehammer. I've not ever had a bad problem with nutsedge but looks like that would be the product to get. Thanks and good luck!
I don’t own one so that is something I can’t answer right now. Check out @budgetlawns channel, he has some good content on getting into reel mowing Bermuda. Thanks for watching.
Sure you just have a longer growing season than I do so your timing will be different but the same basics will help all Bermuda lawns! Your local extension office can be a good resource for timing of fertilizer and herbicide applications. Thanks for watching👍
I only water if I am not getting any rainfall. When their is no rain I normally stick to 3 times per week alternating days. Timing is something you will have to figure out for your lawn using tuna cans or something to measure how long your sprinkler or irrigation takes to put out an inch of water. That being said I try to limit my watering if we are getting rainfall and just supplement with my irrigation system when needed. Thanks for watching.
Yes. The product I showed in this video is round up for lawns, it is their selective herbicide that is safe for lawns. Not the best idea using the same brand name but I’ve used it over the years and it works really well! Thanks for watching!
@@dubltap agree, they just wanted to take advantage of the already known name I think. I’ve been using ortho or spectracide products recently since they are about half the cost
I'm in the mid-east coast, and I have bermuda on my front lawn. I'm just SICK of the amount of time for the green to fully kick in even after taking care of it! Backyard fescue has been fully green for a month. My front yard is barely green until late May.
I’m in similar shape although my Bermuda greens up in early May, my fescue stays green all winter but struggles in the summer. Wish I had one grass type but wouldn’t trade the nature in my backyard for anything it’s worth it. Thanks for watching, good luck this season!
A fall pre emergent app would be a good start then stick with the basics next season and the weeds will start going away and Bermuda will take over. Good luck 👍
@@DTLA27 I have used lesco stonewall pre emergent with good results and just use cheap expert gardener fertilizer from Walmart. The brands don’t really matter as much as putting the products down correctly at the right time
Not sure, I have used 10-10-10 before. I would check with your local extension office most have free guides and will give better specifics for your area.
I agree, mowing is great therapy for sure! Thanks for watching.
Good information. Looking forward to the growing season.
Me too! Thanks for watching.
Excellent tutorial. Thank you so much!
Your Welcome! Good luck this season!
Good stuff! Right to the point 👍
Thanks for watching!
So I cut my watering down actually and cut it shorter. I live in Texas but I’m doing 3 days a week early morning 30min a station. I just got a rain gauge so will see if it’s enough in this heat.
Hope it works for you. If you haven’t already get some tuna cans or gauges to measure how much your zones are putting out in 30 minutes. Good luck 👍
I’ve even had it at 1 inch and it still looks great
I’m going to renovate early spring next year and throw some Bermuda and try to keep it at half inch.
Good luck with your lawn!
Hope it all works out for you
Beautiful lawn man.
Thank you! 👍👍
i like the simple steps , your lawn looks absolutely awsome and GO DAWGS (2 time Natl CHAMPS!!)
Thanks! Let’s get the third this year, go Dawgs!!
What’s your suggestions for Bermuda in SC in March.
First step cutting how much and when to apply fertilizer and what numeric measurements (00-00-00).
Thank you my brother nice and simple.
Your welcome, good luck this season👊
I water my Bermuda in the drought once every three weeks for 1.3 hours. It's greener than all of my neighbors around me, and the area gets a lot of sun from the West.
Nothing like good old H2o! Thanks for watching and sharing!
Beautiful lawn.
Thank you!
Question 29-0-4 - what size bag and how far does that go on your front yard sir?? Awesome video sir thank you
Same question again on your pre-emergent
It’s a 42 pound bag and covers 15000 sq ft at bag rate. For my Bermuda lawn I applied half the bag, just slightly under bag rate with great results. The stonewall pre emergent is a 50 pound bag and covers 14800 sqft, I just follow the instructions on the bag which varies based on your location. I am using a cheaper fertilizer now. Just follow the instructions and don’t over apply. Thanks for watching👍
I’m in central Alabama.
Great tips. Thanks for posting
Your welcome 👍
Great advice, thank you for this video!
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Good luck!
Nice and informative video. How often can you use the spectracide concentrate weed killer on your lawn ? Thanks for any help
Good luck!
I just cut my yard monday i put some scotts Bermuda grass and Pennington Bermuda as well cause i live in west texas i watered the grass Tuesday night for about 2 hrs at night yesterday i raked on the bald spots i had and layed seeds with my hand spreader on 5th setting and then watered yard for about 2 hrs after laying seeds untill about 10pm and then it sprinkled light till this morning around 6am now ill water it again tonight or should i do it 3 times a day insted of once a day 2 hrs in the later afternoon around 8pm which would be better thanks for the help as well

I did this video on the calendars I use for guidance on my Bermuda: ruclips.net/video/8H1CB2Gtbxs/видео.html
Following guidelines from UGA is a great simple start.
@@dylanm1713 not sure on that one, have not had that issue luckily.
Great video! Thanks
Thank you and Happy New Year!

What about liquid iron? And we reel to .8 inches, how often would you recommend mowing each week?
I don’t use liquid fertilizer products or reel mow. There are plenty of other RUclipsrs that do! Just a busy homeowner here that sticks with the basics. Good luck this season!
thanks for great video - you didn't mention aeriation - how often?
Didn't include it with the basics but it would be good to do every few years. I need to aerate this season or next due to some areas of compaction.
This is great thanks
Your Welcome!
Thanks for the tips. How about dethatching?
Great advice! Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Good luck
my neighbor flood irrigates his bermuda lol bermuda indeed LOVES WATER!!!
It makes my lawn greener than the neighbors for sure 👍👍
Great video!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it and good luck this season!
Appreciate the video!
After the initial scalp, do you ever bag the clippings throughout the growing season? Or do you mulch every time?
Thanks! I only bag if I am resetting the height lower during the season.
All great advice!
Thanks for watching!
Question, some people say that leaving the cut grass on your lawn is a bad thing do you agree
Great advice. Thanks.
Glad to help, thanks for watching! 👍
What do you think of Miracle Gro Lawn Food or Scotts Natural Lawn Food?
Never used them! I just use cheap granular fertilizer. Currently expert gardener 30-0-4 synthetic from Walmart.
@@lanieroutside I see it has a lot of nitrogen. How often do you feed the bermuda with this?
@@arielrodriguez6980 during the growing season you feed as often as monthly. May through August for me. Depends on how warm your area is. I typically don’t feed every month but aim for 3 times about every 45 days give or take seems to keep my Bermuda nice and green
I am at Dallas please give me a tips what fertilizer buy

How soon can I put down the nitrogen/fertilizer (3rd step) after the pre emergent phase (1st step)?
When your lawn is actively growing and mostly greened up. Soil temps above 65 degrees and rising. The timing of this will depend on your location for me usually Mid April or Early May for Fertilizer. Thanks for watching!
Hey! I have some problems with rhodesgrass mealybug(some small white waxed bugs) that I can’t get rid of them easily.Any advice? Thank you..!
Just read a good article on the uga extension website, looks like your options are limited, I have not had these so would recommend reaching out to your local extension office for guidance. Good luck!
Are you saying that you throw your clippings right back onto the lawn after mowing ?
@@hakarn-rz4829 yes, I don’t bag them
I cut my lawn to low and got a lot of brown areas in my lawn. What is the best way to get them green again?
Bermuda will bounce back just give it some time and adjust your height of cut up above where you cut it. More frequent mowing may help in the future. Thanks for the question and good luck the rest of the season!
Do you still feed it when the temperature is over 100 degrees every day? 🤔
@@dianes2300 my temps don’t consistently reach 100 in North Ga. We do hit mid to upper 90s consistently and I keep feeding it unless we aren’t getting rain. Like right now 👍
Can you list all of the products you used in this video? I really want to Bermuda Grass Im in Atlanta, I also have no water restrictions
Thanks and good luck!
what is a good motorized reel mower. Someone said McClain? I don't have much of a yard and my push reel mower doesn't power through the scalping
I don’t own one so that is something I can’t answer right now. Check out @budgetlawns channel, he has some good content on getting into reel mowing Bermuda. Thanks for watching.

How many times do you water your grass a week and long?
I only water if I am not getting any rainfall. When their is no rain I normally stick to 3 times per week alternating days. Timing is something you will have to figure out for your lawn using tuna cans or something to measure how long your sprinkler or irrigation takes to put out an inch of water. That being said I try to limit my watering if we are getting rainfall and just supplement with my irrigation system when needed. Thanks for watching.
Roundup (Glyphosate) is not a selective herbicide, it will do what the name suggests so use with caution. Great video tho thank you!
