- This is the sound of the tornado when Dorothy returns to the farmhouse. since there's no clean version of it, i simply restored it by using the audio track that is easily found on the dvd track called "music and effects" with the other sounds removed such as horse sounds and used pusedo stereo on audacity to make it stereo mixed

This sounds almost like a real tornado. It's creepy how real this sounds.

Survivors of the Xenia, OH tornado in 1974 stated that they thought it was like the Wizard of Oz, until it got closer
They made this sound so real, and threatening. I can hear the tornado ofc but I also hear objects being tossed around. Just chilling.
This is the scene in the film that got me into loving tornados. Even the film "Twister" which even has Dorothy on their tornado instrument.
First was a national geographic video cyclone, twister, and then wizard of oz for me

When I was young I would always put in the Twister Dvd and play "Human beings" and have a toy truck. Moving it around a bucket with a blanket on it. Trying to recreate the jeep scene where they are in the ditch. That jeep has always been my favorite. Still is today as well!

The twister itself and the noise it made plus the scary wind noises terrified me as a kid lol.

Tornadoes are pretty scary by themselves but this one always seemed to have supernatural qualities to it. Very ominous in appearance and had the strength of a funnel many times it’s size. It also served as a gateway of sorts to OZ.

This sound is like a mix of a blizzard and a jet taking off. It's such a creepy but cool sound effect for such an old film, the visual effects for this movie still holds up.
Fun fact: To sell the "twister" winds, the set designers had giant fans blowing on either side of the scene.
It sounds like a combination between wind, a garage vacuum and someone pouring sand into a plastic bucket.
But still, well done! It used to scare the living shit out of me when I was a kid, and it still sounds kinda scary.

The wind sound effect is so chilling and scary all the wind sounds used in modern day movies with twisters don't even come close to this along with the twister

@@geraldthebusdriver3491 yes but the cgi in twister looked awesome in the movie whereas the wizard of oz uses practical effects that most people of today wouldn't use

I'm so glad I don't live in Kansas. That state will always make me think of the tornado from the movie and it will make me think of the movie itself.😨😫😱🌪️
My grandpa survived a Kansas tornado when he was a kid because his mom Nellie pushed him into a corner of the house, and shielded him with her body while the tornado took the roof off. Lucky it didn’t take the whole house like Dorothy, Gale‘s House. After all Kansas does get a lot of tornadoes.

Along with the footage, I think the sound effect was used in Cabin in the Sky and High Barbaree.

Some of these audio, I just witnessed, where used from the Twister Ride It Out Queue of the sound effects of a real tornado, created by Warner Bros.
While this may not be what a real tornado sounds like, a real tornado is just as if not more loud and intense. For a movie made in 1939, the effects still hold up very well and this scene makes you feel like a tornado is really approaching. Just goes to show that you cannot underestimate how enduring practical effects can be.
