Raymond Burr was an extraordinary actor. A true professional. Everything he did, he put 100% into it. It really shows on the screen. I really enjoyed this interview with two men that are at the top in their field.
And speaking of film noir, prior to his TV career, Burr played in several well-done noirs of the 1940s. One that comes to mind is His Kind of Woman, with Robert Mitchum and Jane Russell. Good flick, and Burr did real well as the 'heavy'. He generally did play the bad guy and was always impressive as such.
Ray Collins (Lt. Tragg on Perry Mason), got to the point where his memory was failing him and he strugled at times remembering his lines. He said Raymond Burr stuck by his side and was wonderfully patient and supportive. Apparently Burr did the same for William Talman when he had his legal troubles too. Burr never forgot his friends. Thankful for METV showing Perry Mason and the other tv gems from the past.
@@murrayspiffy2815 Also, Barbara Hale was 35 when the show first aired. No spring chicken but was drop dead gorgeous and just as pretty as most actresses in their early 20s.
How sad then that Raymond Burr died alone in Healdsburg, California of cancer. His later life was under a cloud of contention regarding his personal life.
@@mightylonesome9426 You got to remember that in the days of "black & white" TV, one's facial imperfections could be hidden much easier than with color TV. I would say that neither Mr Hopper or Mr Burr were all that attractive in those days because TV had only been around for less than 10 years and whenever I see episodes of The Twilight Zone and the primitive makeup special effects, it looks so campy and fake. But as a 12 year old boy, I would have nightmares. We have become so advanced and sophisticated that those Perry Mason shows that had me riveted to my TV even during the 70's are a hard-to-watch today. Yet, Perry Mason is still one of the more popular syndicated TV shows all over the world. Great books by great authors like Mr Gardner can take on a life of their own. Perry Mason is still one of my favorite programs and the first episodes, along with many others, have the quality of film noir. Absolutely excellent cinematography and writing and acting.

Raymond Burr is one of the most beloved character actors of all time. It’s truly sad he’s gone and has been for some time. Even a staunchly homophobic hard liner will have to admit that they love Perry Mason and Ironside. He had That voice, the perfect baritone that is constantly letting us in on legal terms and letting out little quips that are always sharp enough for a laugh but never in bad taste. Also he had that very commanding yet rarely threatening presence, standing tall and letting the DA and cops know he’s not exactly playing it straight, and they might as well stop their threats because they’ll do no good in the office of Perry Mason. At 6 feet tall and over 250 lbs for most of his career, he was a slightly large man physically but as far as talent goes, he was a real giant. Rest In Peace, Raymond Burr.
I first saw Raymond Burr in Ironside, sometime there after was watching a random channel and saw him walking not realizing at first I was watching him as Perry Mason. Even though it was black and white and not in color like Ironside it three me off. Fantastic actor!
Not convinced he was gay; just speculation, particularly if he really had a daughter. There is nothing wrong with sharing an apartment with a best friend. Society sexualizes things when there is nothing but plutonic.
@@RustyViewerThere is far more evidence he was gay (actually more likely bisexual) than there is of him having a daughter….which is pure speculation. He didn’t share an apartment with a male friend….he lived with a man, one man, for over 30 years on a large piece of property that was actually a working vineyard. When he died he left his entire estate, every bit of it, to that one man. His close friends, including Barbara Hale, have spoken openly about him never having a relationship with a woman and keeping his private life VERY private. Why you feel the need to mis-represent and minimize facts that point to him being a bisexual or gay man who led an amazing life is a more interesting question.
But he reportedly had a thing for Natalie Wood back in the day. They did a film together and apparently Burr showed a romantic interest in her. At least he showed that he had good taste.
My family and I watch Perry Mason almost every night on cable who shows are better than any of the sitcom's that are on today and he does more acting in the introduction of the show just was his mannerism in his eyes then most of those actors do in their whole show he surely is missed great guy good person
I’m retired but find the show (PMason) riveting: the drama, the pacing, situational dynamics, excellent. Imagine, no rape scenes , car crashes, explosions, swords, demons, martial arts, swesring…Riveting drama based on inflection, subtelty, mannerisms… i love it!
Two actors I've always admired in dramatic film being Raymond Burr and Claude Akins. Both with incredible voices and always on their game. Both born in the month of May in 1917 and 1926 respectively. Raymond (76) died in Sept 1993 and four months later in 1994 Claude (67). Two great actors of the highest caliber.
@@SallySallySallySally And Burr did a guest shot on Akins’ show The Misadventures of Sheriff Lobo in an episode called “The Mob Comes to Orly” with Burr as The Godfather.
One of my Marines told me that Raymond Burr visited with the Marines at Chu Lai in 1965 during the Vietnam War. He also reminded me that Raymond Burr was the perp in "Rear Window", the movie with James Stuart. Burr was great as Perry Mason, he had a great supporting staff, and played a great, honest character albeit a lawyer.
Absolutely amongst my favorites, growing up: Perry Mason and Ironside; as well as my mother's and her friends. Seeing some of the clips, confirms for me, years later, both the quality of the actor and the script writing. Tremendous.

There is that phrase that goes something like . No one could play that role any better . In the case of Perry Mason . Raymond Burr is Perry Mason . He was absolutely bad azz in that role . Respect and RIH sir

@@ConservativeAnthem In 2020 (or 2019) that's hardly a "news flash." While Burr was filming "Ironside" and "Mallory" on the Universal lot, a few soundstages over was Rock Hudson in the role of the manly, San Francisco Police Dept. Commissioner McMillian in the long-running NBC Mystery Movie series, "McMillan & Wife." Viewers saw a convincing physical relationship with his TV wife, played by the rather fetching Susan Saint James. In that day and age, 1950s - 1970s, it would be cultural suicide for both of these popular stars to come out of the closet. . . . . Perhaps if you put your thinking cap and your be nice cap on at the same time you can come up with something original and less accusatory when you comment, like how ridiculous Raymond Burr's curly hair looked in the "Mallory" film clip (acting opposite the outstanding guest star, Robert Loggia).

11/01/2020 - I'm 66 and watched Perry Mason when it was first broadcast and reruns every chance I get. Right now MeTV broadcasts the program at 8:00 am and 10:30 pm each weekday - and I still watch every episode. I didn't recall that Carson ribbed Burr about his weight. I watched a documentary wherein Wayne Newton, weary of Carson's repeated fat jokes about him. Newton walked into Carson's office one day, told him to stop making the "jokes", and never spoke to Carson again. I didn't know that Carson made fun of Burr as well; making fun of peoples' weight is crass, condescending, and altogether disgusting.
My folks loved Perry Mason. I now have the complete series on dvd, becoming a huge fan of the show. Ppl tell me my dad looked like Burr, I never got away with anything. SMH.
That's not what the other commenters are saying! That Carson repeatedly made fat jokes about Burr (Burr was always conscious of his weight having a tendency to put on the pounds) Carson was an unpleasant individual by all accounts on here.
Just started watching re-runs of PM. Great show and fantastic actor! In real life, appears very genuine and caring. Interesting to read about his well founded dislike of Johnny for being the butt of repetitive cruel jokes. His statement and glance to Johnny at 9:00 says it all. Definitely lots of tension in this interview.
Burr would go to Vietnam several times to entertain the troops. He also injured his hand in a helicopter accident there. He did appear in a few episodes wearing the cast.
When I was a kid I thought the actor playing Ironside was really paralyzed. As an 8 year old It didn’t occur to me that someone who could walk would sit in a wheel chair just to play a part. 😀
In answer to kappelmeister123 - They were showing a clip from the TV Movie: Mallory: Circumstantial Evidence (TV Movie). Raymond Burr played the part of Arthur Mallory, and it was released in 1976. IMDB has this episode with Johnny Carson listed as February 3, 1976.
Carson was noted for being a mean-spirited person. He (Carson) also had a run-in with Wayne Newton who was tired of the 'gay jokes' Carson used in his monolog.
Johnny Carson was a mean-spirited human being, especially to make fun of Raymond Burr, who, if you talk to anyone in the showbiz industry who knew hin, never had a bad word to say about him and all speak in length of his extraordinary kindness and professionalism, as was as the massive amounts of philanthropy he did over the years, most of which never came out until after his death.
@@lisarichardson5384 I don't want to speak ill of the dead but on some American biography show they did say that Carson hated his elderly mother and did not attend her funeral. He also banned Joan Rivers for life from ever coming on his show ever again after starting her ill fated late night show. So yes I think you are correct he had a mean streak...I still feel bad that he died of emphysema which is a horrible way to go.
Perry was and always will be the greatest program of its kind.... I have talked to attorneys who tell me that the show was a joke and very Hollywood, bearing only a partial semblance to reality. Ignorance is bliss, if that's the case...the way they did that show was amazing. Every actor I've talked to who appeared on that show said that they loved Raymond.
I’m sure your lawyer friends are right - to a certain extent…..as in, when Mason is bearing down HARD on a witness and some guy (or woman) in the court cracks up and starts screaming: “Alright, alright!! I admit it - I killed him, I murdered him!! But I didn’t MEAN to, it all happened so fast…!! Oh, boo-how, bwa -ha-ha…!!!”
After Carson gives him a compliment on having two series that lasted 17 years, Burr comes back with a dig saying he often wonders how long Johnny would have lasted in movies if he never went to NY to do the Tonight Show.Reading the comments of a mean spirited Johnny, I think this was lost on some of you .
Raymond was a class act. He and his partner was dear friends. I don't believe he ever came out as Gay, but everyone in the business knew. Carson knew. Still a true friend and actor.
Mr. HAHN who gives a flying f**k? Why bring up his sexual preference? Too many people are perversely interested in others sex life and then writing about it.🙄

Sixty years since Perry Mason first appeared on the ‘small’ tube tuned to CBS each week, the storylines are just as good today as they were then. Yea, there were some episodes that could be labeled as turds, but for the most part the episode writing was excellent. But one thing that has changed, the series is now available in HD and is just a crisp and clean as it was never before.
Burr was on johnny's show three times: 1968, 1976 and 1977. Since Johnny said he hadn't hadn't have Burr on in 7-8 years so this must be the 2/3/76 show. Mallory was broadcast 2/8/76.

Apparently, he had a daughter, but it doesn't surprise me.
I still watch Perry Mason. I love Raymond Burr.
My family and I watch Perry Mason almost every night on cable who shows are better than any of the sitcom's that are on today and he does more acting in the introduction of the show just was his mannerism in his eyes then most of those actors do in their whole show he surely is missed great guy good person
Miss Raymond Burr great actor but lives on in the reruns of Ironsides Perry Mason and the Mason movies. Rip Raymond Burr 1917-1993
Loved, loved, loved, Raymond Burr. Miss is great acting.
Great actor . Why cant I find a lawyer like him????
Good question! There’s only one Perry Mason! I often say if I ever need a lawyer, “ I want a Perry Mason”.... lol
I watch Him all the time .have such a crush on him
He was gay
Two actors I've always admired in dramatic film being Raymond Burr and Claude Akins. Both with incredible voices and always on their game. Both born in the month of May in 1917 and 1926 respectively. Raymond (76) died in Sept 1993 and four months later in 1994 Claude (67). Two great actors of the highest caliber.
Aikins appeared in one episode of Perry Mason: "The Case of the Half-Wakened Wife" in 1958.
I guess it’s Perry Mayson
@@SallySallySallySally And Burr did a guest shot on Akins’ show The Misadventures of Sheriff Lobo in an episode called “The Mob Comes to Orly” with Burr as The Godfather.
One of my Marines told me that Raymond Burr visited with the Marines at Chu Lai in 1965 during the Vietnam War. He also reminded me that Raymond Burr was the perp in "Rear Window", the movie with James Stuart. Burr was great as Perry Mason, he had a great supporting staff, and played a great, honest character albeit a lawyer.
Burr aged very well. Great actor.
He was a wonderful gentlemen and always a class act!
He showed compassion too, while talking about acting in a wheelchair, he spoke of those who really need them.
Loved Raymond BURR !!!!
Mr. Burr was truly an extraordinary human being. I enjoy watching the Classic Perry Mason. Excellent! Excellent! 💕👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Absolutely amongst my favorites, growing up: Perry Mason and Ironside; as well as my mother's and her friends. Seeing some of the clips, confirms for me, years later, both the quality of the actor and the script writing. Tremendous.
METV carries the original Perry Mason twice every day, one at night, one in the morning. Best TV ever made.
Huge Raymond Burr fan..R.I.P.- R.B. He is an icon..We live 5 min away f rom his place of rest & visit often....new Westminster, British Columbia.canada, !!!👍🇨🇦🇬🇧🇺🇸🇫🇯👍!!!

Phee…. I would love to live close enough to visit his grave at least once. I would love to place a red rose there. I believe he was a wonderful man and I love him dearly.
I watch Perry Mason almost every night, and also loved him in on Ironsides.
I enjoyed watching Raymond Burr in his film noir movies where one can enjoy his true acting skills as a villain. Many of his great movies can be viewed on RUclips movies.
What a treat!
RUclips is the first place I saw any of his old movies as a villian; he was terrific!
Burr played a number of heavies in films. He always said being the “bad guy” was MUCH more fun!
One of the greatest actors ever his performance in Perry Mason Has to be one of the most unbelievable feats ever in the acting world so to speak.
Love this guy, loved Perry Mason
cool to see raymond as himself!...oddly this is the only interview ive ever seen of him...
Google Raymond Burr on the Jack Benny
Show.
Enjoy.
I've just watched a few on YT...all wonderful !!

will do!
There is that phrase that goes something like . No one could play that role any better . In the case of Perry Mason . Raymond Burr is Perry Mason . He was absolutely bad azz in that role . Respect and RIH sir
what makes a character likeable is how the public feels about him....and who wouldnt want a man of integrity a lawyer who didnt lose...when they were in trouble?
of course we must always like the actor too.....no one has ever become a star that was disliked by the public....and Raymond Burr was liked by everyone...
I watched Perry Mason as a child and teenager! I have rediscovered it this year! I just love him! Today, May 21, is his birthday! Happy birthday in Heaven Raymond Burr!
What a class act Raymond Burr was!
A complete closet case his whole life.
He also played in the original Godzilla movie
@@ConservativeAnthem: Probably only "closeted" to those of us who didn't know him.
@@Solutions3000 So what was he like and did he ever talk about his private life?
@@ConservativeAnthem In 2020 (or 2019) that's hardly a "news flash."
While Burr was filming "Ironside" and "Mallory" on the Universal lot, a few soundstages over was Rock Hudson in the role of the manly, San Francisco Police Dept.
The only Perry Mason EVER!.
packingten Right you are...there can nvr be another; he can nvr be duplicated...
Colombo was good the only 2 I like
Ahhhhhhh, just one more thing, only take a minute............
Chosen by the author Earle Stanley Gardner: "That's him!"

His Perry Mason TV Show was watched in our house every week miss it a lot etc.
The re-runs are still on. I watch it all the time.

Just started watching perry mason, a show that started before my dad was born
Sublime performance from raymond, the way he carries himself onscreen - harrowing indeed

Yeah..Me too, but I'm telling you..if I hear that name Evelyn Bagby AGAIN..I will lose it !! Bad enough Paramount Plus plays the same 5 episodes of "Perry" over and over..But am I the only one who thinks THAT episode should be turned into a drinking game?( like" Bob" on Bob Newhart..) 11/01/2020 - I'm 66 and watched Perry Mason when it was first broadcast and reruns every chance I get.
Raymond is hilarious, dry wit personified!
James Burns... have you seen Burr spoofing Perry Mason on the Jack Benny Show? If not, search for it... it's on You Tube.
Raymond was great on the Jack Benny Show where "Perry" was Jack's lawyer when Jack was indicted for murder. Great routine here on RUclips.
The bit has a classic "Perry Mason" ending, too.
I try to watch everything Raymond Burr, I’ve been watching Perry Mason on METV since forever. ❤
I loved this man. Loved Perry Mason.

I liked watching Perry Mason with my great grandmother. I’ll have to look for that series, and Iron Sides, on Hulu or Netflix.
Noone comes close to this sexy guy NOONE
My folks loved Perry Mason. I now have the complete series on dvd, becoming a huge fan of the show. Ppl tell me my dad looked like Burr, I never got away with anything. SMH.
That's freaky ....My father and Burr could have been twins
Its obvious Johnny really respected Ray Burr...great interview.I am also a big Burr fan!
That's not what the other commenters are saying!
That Carson repeatedly made fat jokes about Burr (Burr was always conscious of his weight having a tendency to put on the pounds)
Carson was an unpleasant individual by all accounts on here.
he said " big burr" fan.
One of the best actors interviewed by The King of Late Night!
I watch it at least 3 times every day. Love that man!
Same here!
That’s the beauty of the youth!
Burr tired of Carson's fat jokes about him and eventually refused to come on Carson's show.
Johnny must have had a stroke to go down that road.
I watched this to hear the fat jokes, but didn't hear any.
Greatest generation
Glad fortunate to be witness
I love listening to him in old time radio shows from the 50's. He was great as Capt Lee Quince in Ft Laramie.

@Linda Musel From New Westminster, just outside of Vancouver, BC. He is buried there with his mom and dad, and his sister, Geraldine.
Yeah, I’m sure most murderers attend the trial of someone else being tried for the former’s crime 😀😀😀
Great radio voice.
Beyond a great actor. His dialog in perry mason was incredible. No one in hollywood today could do his role
He despised Carson for making fun of his weight.
Carson made fun of Wayne Newton's singing voice years ago and Newton confronted him to stop it.

@Earl Delsanto Yes it does. 1976-1968 is 8 years, so 7-8 years is about right.
Johnny said Burr's show would air Tuesday, February 8 at 9 PM. February 8 was on a Tuesday in 1977.
