- It might not be summer yet, but the sounds of the season have already arrived. CBS News national correspondent Dave Malkoff traveled to the Georgia-South Carolina border, where one of two broods of periodical cicadas expected to arise this year in a historic emergence convergence is already molting and traveling to the treetops to mate.

I love the sound of them,in my South Carolina land I have been waiting for them my age probably my last time getting to enjoy them , far better than the eclipse ❤
No!!😭 They’re literally my phobia and I go to Southern Wisconsin every summer.
They're harmless to humans get over your neurosis
I used to know a woman who was incredibly intelligent and an artist. She raised amazing productive children who became extremely successful in their respective careers (finance, art and acting/directing). Born in Chicago, she spoke five languages. Preferred reading in French! This fascinating woman had it all... Including a phobia... to birds.
I am not making this up and to this day it blows me away how WEIRD and crazy she could become.
We couldn't dine al fresco. She couldn't go to a beach. Averted her eyes from trees! Night time was easier and she loved attending concerts, loved the opera... BUT she would leave an event (or refuse to even go in) if she spotted a woman wearing a feather boa.
She realized it was irrational; swore nothing ever happened to her as a child but I think something had to have happened - maybe when she was a baby and her mother wasn't right there with her... Phobias are wild. People don't just 'get over' a real phobia, but who knew they could become so extreme?!
I feel for anyone with a true cicada phobia because this emergence is about to get real. Trillions.
Personally I love ❤️ cicadas. Have adored them all my life. I have a jade cicada in my hallway - they're believed to bring good luck and good favor in some cultures 🙂
They are so cool
Ewwwwwwwww!, yeah nope!!!. Those Cicadas really freak me out!!!
Lucky us!
The are magnificent creatures. They are around for only around 6 weeks - They get their wings and fly, mate and die. I need to make a road trip south to see them.
I live in upstate SC on the NC border...it's crickets ..and I live in a rural area..I'm not complaining 😅
Says 17. Shows Roman numeral for 19.
theres a whole number of different broods, but certain ones are 13-year and others are 17-year. the one they showed that was brood xix is a 17 year one
Grossed out & impressed ! Hes holding them ! 🤢😆😄
They are harmless bugs. It's called nature. Dig deep for self-control.
How many birds were culled in 2023?
what does it have to do with cicadas?
@@SaltiumineAn All You Can Eat Buffet for Birds.
THERE'S 34 TRILLION !! Not really , that's the national debt. Only a couple of trillion bugs.
I’ve seen humans behave crazier.
2024: The year Yankees discovered cicadas.
The news industry obsessively reports about cicadas, every year. Every year. Jeeze, find something else to talk about?
