If you're an adult mayfly you'll probably die before the end of this video - Luke M. Jacobus

- Trace the life cycle of mayflies, and explore why these swarming insects are a sign of healthy aquatic ecosystems.
--
For most of the world’s 4,000 mayfly species, adulthood lasts roughly one day. And for some species, it’s only a matter of minutes. This isn’t because they’re all eaten up by predators. Rather, this abridged adulthood is a natural part of their life cycle. So, what role do these bugs play in their ecosystems? Luke M. Jacobus explores the stunningly short life span of the winged insects.

A lot of these species don't even stay near bodies of water - they swarm above pavement miles away from shorelines, a nuisance to encounter when walking/running by, whether evening, midday or morning - and they do not just want those spots in the bright sun. They love being in the shade too. But at the end of the day, I am thankful that they are not mosquitos
The German name for mayflies also comes from their short lifespan. It's Eintagsfliege (one day fly)
Since I'm still alive, I'll assume I'm not a mayfly...
something a mayfly would say idk

Ohhh man! This was the exact bug stuck behind a board after fixing up some stuff at my faculty building. It was quite old, but well preserved. Who knew it had been dead a long time more than it was ever alove? It was at least 15 years old.
Mayflies actually live such an interesting life in their aquatic form, wow! Great fun video
I never knew different species of mayflies in nymph stage had different body type, locomotion and habits. Another quality video TED ED!
When we lived in New Hampshire we experienced them for the first time, having been California Natives and they were very aggressive we have moved back to California and I don’t miss them in any way shape or form!

The thing is ted ed changed the front photo! It used to be ' Maylies, don't click' now it's 'Long live the mayflies '
Loved the video but just be aware of the inaccuracy @4.35. To sample mayflies you would do a kick sample.Wearing wading boots, go into the middle of the river and while holding a mesh net downstream, kick up the sediment. A scientist sampling mayflies looks a lot different than what you've portrayed.
I have seen a sort of mayfly swarm about 10 years ago. They were really cool. Their deaths feed birds so they can become parents. Its all a part of a balanced ecosystem.
Depending on the oxygen level in the water can determine what species can live in the water. Some mayfly larvae depend on high levels of oxygen in the water in order to thrive.
A regular fly I see this as an absolute win.

In recent Ted Ed videos, (narrated by Addison Anderson because those are the only ones I watch), I've noticed there's a background music that makes it almost impossible to watch it peacefully like good old times. It's sort of a child's nursery tune and we don't need the music running like this, the animations are great on their own! And Addison's speech rate is faster now, not sure why. In older videos the pace was slightly slower, and was almost magnetic to the viewer's ears.
2 requests: Ditch the bgm and bring the narration speed back to previous levels, like good old days. Cheers!
2:45 ???? How does the mayfly fertilise an egg and let it grow until it hatches inside them in a single day? Is that just for the species that live longer?
