ABOUT THIS VIDEO
So what is the point in this video? Well, my Wife asked me to get her a Photograph of Highland Cattle.
I knew where they were. But was I brave enough to actually get close? Nope!
So I armed myself with a 35mm M42 Screw Fit 300mm lens and my Chinon CS
and also two rolls of CineStill BWXX. A film I have been gagging to use for a while.
Apart from I couldn't keep the 300mm unstabalised lens still during a 250/th exposure
I also had a problem in development. Having now no more BWXX left I went back the following
day with a Mamiya 645, a 80mm lens and a roll of Bergger Panc 400. So I had no option other than to get closer to the Cattle.
See my adventure from shooting to buying a frame and matt board to developing, printing and finally framing and showing my Wife.

Looking back over the CineStill Negatives the under developed reel looks slightly better at the bottom than the top. I have a feeling I didn't fill the tank right up. Probably a few millimetres short from the top. Thanks for all your comments.
Well, in case the issue was level of chemicals you will get a level line between part of the film under the chemical and out of it. I have had this issue and it’s easy to recognise.
For me it looks more that both rolls were from different batches and probably the “undeveloped” one was very expired.
I don’t know, it’s a theory.
@@Arturo.H.M I agree. They seem to have different batch numbers. I don't think amount of developer in tank is the cause. Do CineStill just repackage this ( is it Eastmann Double X?) ?
@@PeteMP3 digging a Dino there aren't Ya. Lol. But yes it is Eastman XX with the Remjet removed so it can be processed in regular BW chems.

This wasn't a photography video but a love story. A quest with danger for the love of a woman. Well done.

Treat large animals and respect and you can photograph them with no problems :)
I remember when I was photographing stags, one of them (taller than me) decided he didn't like my dog - who was lying down and keeping his distance - and charged him so I had to jump in between them and bellowed at the stag, "PISS OFF MATE!" Stopped the stag in his tracks, stared at me like, "Woah, man. Calm down." And sauntered off and made sure he pointed his arse at me for the next 30 mins until I decided to look for another one!

I've got a roll of Cinestill B&W in my AE-1 at the moment, so this was interesting to watch. Really enjoyed the video. Had me smiling from start to finish, and I think what makes me enjoy it the most is that you clearly love your work. From capture to print - that's what it's all about. It did make me chuckle at the reveal... That'd be my wife's reaction too. "Oooh, it's lovely. Didn't you do a highland though?" I lol'd.
Anyway - we need merch links. I want the mug. And the t-shirt :)

Roger, you channel is packed full of a lot of good info. Do enjoy the videos and their content. Just got back into photography. So I shoot mainly film. It’s changed so much. Did news crew photo. So mainly run and gun. It’s seems though. That a good amount of people are coming back to film. Cheers and keep on shooting.

Nice episode, particularly like the bloke and his staffie shot. I only get grief off cows when the dog's with me. The 645 negs look printable with a bit of contrast.

This reminds me of a story. I went out birding in a local park, that cattle also graze. It was 5am the sun hadn’t come up yet I was tucked away in some bushes, waiting for the birds. This f****ing cow, a baby, comes up to me in my hiding spot and moooos and mooos about 3’ from my face. For about 15 minute I ignored the cow. Finally I lost it and yelled at the cow, and waved my hat at it. Instead of it running away it ran at me. And so did the entire herd down the hill!! I took of running with 15 cows in tough and climbed a tree with all my camera gear...yikes
So, now I just avoid cows and don’t eat meat. 📸😳
That's funny Matt! I've had a cow come at me before. It was in the road. I got out the car and did what you did and it come at me so I ran back in the car ha ha.

On the subject of your odd roll of film there, it might just have been a dodgy roll. If your worried that not enough volume of developer went in, just put the empty spools in the tank with lid off and pour in water till the spools are covered and then pour that water into a measuring jug to see how much was needed to actually cover the reels 👍.

Nice. I have used Caffenol as described on make.com's RUclips channel and that worked well enough, but I hadn't seen a really good vid that included the salt before. I appreciate that you did the unscientific, unmeasured "Let's just chuck it all in" version at the end; it's enough to explode the brain of any half-decent chemistry teacher, but it was good to see that a certain degree of imprecision with the measurements doesn't meaningfully affect the result.
I do wonder what that film stock is.
I've been using Double X a few years now, and XTOL 1:3 works very good, and you can also print the negatives without getting too much contrast.

Cows are usually fairly civilized. It's the bulls one really has to watch out for. Then again, if there's a calf to protect, there's no telling what a cow might do. I don't think I've ever seen any cows quite like the Highland cows. I would imagine that one of them having a bad hair day could greatly affect his/her disposition. :-)
I've been getting closer to the Highland Cows. They are friendly but I've been told not to go near them if they have a calf. We had one loose in the road a few weeks back and I alerted farmer by phone and he was at another field. Asked me to chase the cow back. Me and a neighbour did it but it was scary ha ha

Just watched. Great video. Saw you use “command strips” to attach to the wall, but how did you attach the photo to the mat. I thought it was the command strips at first, but doubt it. Thanks.
I use painters tape (masking tape). I flip the print over and apply the tape to the top of the print half on and half off. Then flip the print back over and place the mount exactly where it needs to be and it sticks to mount. I wouldn't recommend masking tape for an expensive or cherished print as its not acid free and could ruin the print over time.
lovely video and photos. I recently bought the same developing tank as you have, AP universal or something like that. I find that it leaks a ridiculous amount. Does yours? if not, how! thanks again for the video

When climbing over fence gates climb over the hinge side not the latch side it's stronger and your less likely to damage someone's gate also cows aren't that bad as you've now seen nice to see you face your fears head on

noticing how much silver you have on the sprocket areas, I'd say the film was fogged or not entirely fixed (fixing removes unexposed silver grains). If I had to choose, I'd say fogged. Try printing with a higher contrast filter, maybe that will help.
Fogged sounds on the right path. Don't know how though. I did actually throw it back in the fixer after washing thinking it wasnt fixed.

I develop two films at the same time in my Patterson tank all the time, never had any problems. Are you shure you filled up the tank properly with developer? Thanks for great videos, keep it up! 😊👍🏻
I think I was a few mm out from the top. As I noticed the under developing was worse at the top sprockets
Could be that you exhausted the developer. Good rule of thumb is to use 500 ml of developer for 80 sq inches of film (so, 500 ml/roll of 120 or roll of 35 mm). If you’re developing 2 rolls of 35 mm, you should use 1 L of developer. A good resource is The Darkroom Cookbook, by Steve Anchell.
The tank was full of developer. Nearly 1ltr.
I really like Bergger Pancro 400 and also want to try their papers if I ever try fiber papers. I've had issues with thinner negatives with it too. I get a bit better results rating it at 200 and I've been slowing adding time to development to get negatives that have similar density to, say, TMX. Posted about it in the Large Format Photography forum which turned into a really interesting if overwhelming conversation about exposure theory :) So I still haven't quite figured out why my Pancro negatives are thin haha but nonetheless it's a film that has beautiful tones. Grainy (at least it is in XTOL) but beautiful nonetheless.
I haven't decided if I like it more than HP5. I tend to still prefer the look of TMX as my all around favorite but in 400 speed, I haven't found the one yet (perhaps other than HP5). Excited to try ADOX's CMS 100 when it's available in sheet format here in the states.
Yeah I used Microphen and grain was hardly noticeable. It's a nice film. I like it.

about your tank / development problems : I usually rely on the times given by the "massive dev chart". Quiet reliable IMHO. If you dev 2 rolls in one go you might want to have inversions every 30 seconds (?)
I grew up on a sheep and cattle farm in Australia, never had a problem with a cow been charged hundreds of times from rams. Maybe those British ones are a bit more temperamental like their human cousins ;-)
with your first try (of DF96) being so painful, I am wondering whether your not maintaining temp, I managed to dev mine fine on my first ever attempt at developing film. Did ~25C (target was 24C) with 5 ish minute presoak, then developed with 30 secs initial agitation and then 10 seconds every minute for 4 minutes)
One thing to bare in mind is that Part B, when mixed with water is endothermic (i.e. as the disolution? "reaction" occurs, it removes heat from the solution), when I prepared my accordian bottle, the temperature of the solution dropped like 3-4 degrees

Usually anything between 10 and 12 inches. Sometimes I'll make larger prints 16-24 inch.

Three coincidences while watching this video (1) I put an Optomax 35mm f2.8 (M42) on to my Pentax P3 (2) I loaded my Canon F-1 with Bergger Pancro 400 and I have that book by Tom Hustler.

just proves how film photography is a complete system compared to digital. guess one has to choose where to practice. still think film forces better results. alas, many different alternatives.

@@ShootFilmLikeaBoss For lower speeds (200 tops), the grain is very smooth, especially if you do a stand development (1:100 for 60 min). Rodinal has a grain making effect.

It could be that cinestill black and white is just re packaged Kodak Eastman double x. I don’t know how old the stock is that they use. If you like the film you’d be better getting a bulk loader and buying a load of double x, cinestill charge a lot just to repackage it! Either that or go to nik and trick, they bulk their own double x and sell it for about £3-£5 a roll I think

Cinestill removes the remjet so they are providing a service not just a repacking and marking up the cost.

Eastman XX doesn't have Remjet. That's reserved for Vision3.
What is the ISO rating on this film?
Have you found an answer to the problem yet? I think it's that the spool is sliding when you agitate...Have same problem when i develop so when i develop one film i always put an empty spool above it to stop it from sliding up when agitating...Hope you get my meaning :)

how do you dispose of your used chemicals? will they damage septic systems at all?
Most of my fixer and toners goes to local dump site I'm not sure about septic tanks.
What did you use to adhere the cow photo to the wall?
They are velcro tabs called commando strips
Highland coos are so docile, they don't move as a herd, unlike dairy cows. They are pretty dumb though and might whack you with a horn by accident shooing flies away if you're right up to it.
Looks like you were more in danger by climbing the gate with two cameras in your hands than the cow.
What DSLR is that? I couldn't quite make out what it was.

Silberra 52xx is the same stuff,...just for double price.
Is it very thin that film? I shot a roll of Silberra 400 recently and noticed how thin the film was (weight)
Well the Silberra U400 is not a Cinema film and different from Silberra 52xx which is exactly the same as Cinestill BWxx. Silberra also offers "rerolled" ORWO Cinema stock.
You haven't really enlarged much from 6x4.5, is there no way you could make a crop of the Highland cow face?

that 300mm is a beast rodger shame its so heavy u might be able to get a bracket made for it so it mounts directly to the tripod so the camera body is not copping all the weight that's weird how the top spool did not fully develop never seen that happen before send david hancock an email about it he is pretty good at finding faults like this here is his link - ruclips.net/user/hancockDavidM -
