I lived one town from New Haven. The reason he mentions New Haven is because he was arrested while on stage at the New Haven Arena in 1967. The venue later became the New Haven Coliseum which became famous for Tommy Lee of Motley Crue’s fall from the ceiling in 1990 and at one of Ted Nugent’s shows in the late 70s, a Greyhound Bus was overturned while fans tried to crash in into the arena cement wall. We had some great times at that venue. Now demolished.

Yep... Accurate. Wasn't the reason for the New Haven arrest over a possibly underage girl in the dressing room?
I lived in Hamden at the time...

@BritIronRebel I'm not sure. Charges were dropped after paying a very small fine. Thought it wasn't a serious charge.

The Doors had a streak of Psychedelic rock in their sound, not in all of their songs but definitely in this song.

I love Densmore on the skins. Unfortunately, I read that he had major hearing loss caused by the music and that he had to stop playing many years ago.

This is normally played in tandem with another track by the Doors “Blue Sunday” kind of like “Heartbreaker” and “Living Loving Maid” by Led Zeppelin.

Great deep-dive track, and insanely catchy. Very influential, too - 20 years later! This song and Donovan's "Barabajagal" provided the soundscape for Britain's 1990s Madchester sound - if you listen to the rhythm and sound of tracks like Stone Roses' "Fool's Gold", you'll find this track bubbling away beneath the surface.

This is one of those albums that just flows one song into the next. In fact, I heard the next song beginning to play in my mind, toward the end of this one...and I haven't heard that one in decades. On a Blue Sunday. Something like that. Jim was The Dude.

a nation born in blood can die in blood.... one of their best songs w/ excellent metaphor symbolism warning how violence can be like a runaway virus.... do you remember the scene in the shining of the rising blood in the hallways? that visual image is poetically used here. before that movie, by the way.

The Doors, Jim was super lucky that he had the talent behind him that he did. Yes Jim was the front man Lizard King but Rob, Ray, and John were excellent. Shaman's Blues is a great song of theirs as well as Not To Touch The Earth.

I just realized that the opening notes here sound exactly like the opening notes of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit! I've known both songs for decades but it just hit me listening to this here. I don't think it was intentional, there are only so many notes/chords etc in music, but it's so similar and used for the opening, very cool. Obviously this is an incredible song, another one from the Doors that became so recognizable. So many iconic songs by them.

Summertime is right, but not a summer of chilling out, but a summer of heat. The crowded city was Chicago in 1968 when the cops rioted and beat up hundreds of anti-war protesters protesting against the Vietnam War at the Democratic National Convention. The violence even spilled into the convention hall a few times in minor ways. Dan Rather got roughed up too. Afterward the authorities rounded up a half dozen people they accused of being the ring leaders of the riot and put them on trial. But since the people they arrested were not the police who rioted, the accused walked away free and into the history books. Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, and Tom Hayden were household names for some years afterward. The line about New Haven references a concert The Doors played at Yale that turned violent when the cops overreacted and tried to arrest Jim Morrison in the middle of the concert. The cops hated The Doors and often hassled them on tour. 1968 was a year of unrest in the US. See also The Rolling Stones "Street Fighting Man".

Yes, thank you for giving the background. The '68 Chicago Dem Convention was a huge thing culturally, police brutality (which was always a thing but on stark display during the 60s at peaceful protests etc). And yep, the police were always taking it on themselves to be the morality police with musicians of that new, young era. Always targeting them. Jim sure did like to taunt them, though, lol.

If you enjoy a good read, "No One Here Gets Out Alive" is a great book that pretty much outlines Jim Morrison life right to the end, deep dive into what he was all about as a person and it certainly wasnt being a rock star celebrity...he really did not like what came along with being a world famous rock star

Jim Morrison was absolutely considered one of the best frontmen then & now. They could be really edgy & mysterious, with Jim's poetry/lyrics, his haunting voice that could always do screaming Blues or rock. However you want to do it, I'll listen to any and all Doors music you do. Thank you for keeping the Doors' music alive!

This song makes me think of "fear & loathing in Las Vegas", staring Johnny Depp in the movie, but written by Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. Tripping balls in a Las Vegas hotel on acid. But that's me. Check out "the WASP, (Texas & the big beat). " Great song.

Biz first I want to thank you because everytime I write a comment you always acknowledge it with everyone else that's really cool to see you aknowlaging everyone's comments in one of my comments I said I just found out that you were from Rhode Island where I live right now and I also suggested that you check out Lynyrd Skynyrd from 1976 when they warmed up the rolling stones when they went out on the toung when they wasn't supposed to you definitely have to check out Saturday night special, give me three steps, and you should also check out from the same show traveling man and you should really check out free bird believe it or not it's better than the 1977 in Oakland stadium if you could believe it the guitar solos at the end is more insane and it goes on for another 2 1/2-3 minutes longer plus you get to see them go on the toung all four songs are bad ass Ronnie sings great on those songs and they make all four songs more bad ass then the album and Ronnie sings much better so please check out all four you said you were going to do more songs from that concert besides you haven't done a Skynyrd song in a while I really want you to check them out it won't be just for your pleasure it would be for mine also because I love seeing you get into the music I loved growing up listening to it would mean the world to me your my favorite music reactor by far and your also athe coolest

The Doors used a bass player in the studio but for live shows, Ray played the bass lines on keyboard bass pedals. The song is about anti war protests.
