I'm a little late to the game as our Org is only just now starting to convert to M365, and my role is user management, currently in on-prem AD, and I want to build something in Power Apps that helps facilitate user management - onboarding, offboarding, updates, etc. From my understanding it would require a data connection like this, provided Power Apps is the same 5 years from the time of this video :) Thanks for the great content, I have a lot of research to do and videos to watch!
You have the right idea BUT the problem is going to be there isn't an easy way to manipulate AD on prem with Power Apps. If you had Cloud AD or Entra or whatever we call it this would be much easier. Maybe the idea right now is build an app to facilitate collecting info and tracking tasks, but leave the actual work of AD manipulation to PowerShell? Just a thought.
@@ShanesCows Great info, thanks! Most of our tasks are done via PowerShell now, so maybe I can come up with something that tracks, like you say, and can provide historical lookup capabilities, but that can also execute (call) PowerShell scripts to perform specific tasks...? Hey Shane, Great video. There might be a few updates to when I'm actually watching this but I get the overall picture. In that case, should I use an account exclusively for this purpose that must have the 365 licenses, correct? Or do you recommend created a specific account for it?

Hi Shane, very good video, easy to follow, but for whatever reason it does not work for me. I am trying to link into a ProtgreSQL database. The installation completes and it shows I have PowerApps and BI Ready, however Flow keeps on saying I do not have a gateway installed. What am I missing? Do I need to somehow point my Flow at the Gateway?
I haven't ran into that. I think what you need to do is go into Connections and add a New connection to Postgre. IN that connection specify the Gateway.
I need to retrieve data from a tool of my organisation by means of API. Can I make an http request with power automate to the organisation tool connecting with this gateway...in other words I can install the gateway on my pc connected by vpn on intranet and using the gateway to retrieve data from the tool and manage them with power automate

Hi Shane, Thanks for your amazing videos! I have a question to you - what is the governance strategy we must adopt as part of on-prem data gateway installation being an admin ? I have listed down my recommendation based on my experience. Let me know in case if you have any suggestions: 1. Restrict users from installing gateways. Installation must be done under admin supervision who will temporary allow the team to do gateway installation and block users once installation is done 2. Admin must review the naming conventions, description etc like "appname-test-powerbireportfinance" 3. Use Gateway Performance PBI template file for monitoring 4. We must develop power automate for governance which will do the following: 4.1: Notify users to update the latest version of gateway 4.2: Delete the gateways not in use Do you have any other recommendations ?

@@robertomarra2431 Okay. I was talking about licensing. Which has changed a bit. The key thing for you to know is that using the Gateway with Power Apps or Automate it is a premium connector. Hi Shane, great video - thank you . Subscribed. I have a question - With the on premise gateway you can allocate data connections (from the www admin) - these can be setup - shared - etc with users (and those who are admins for the Gateway itself). thanks for a great video you made really easy to understand. i have a question, what is more secure and faster, An azure sql database fed information from an on premise application OR an on premise sql database linked to powerapps via a gateway.
I don't know if I have an answer there. I am guessing they are both in the same ballpark of security so I would ask which scenario are you more comfortable with? Is cost a factor?
Shane Young cost is not mainly a concern, however performance is. when using a gateway, would powerapps application query the on-premises sql server everytime when someone opens an application? Would this not translate to a lot of traffic and reduced performance.
So are we saying that for sharepoint 2016 on prem that your Sharepoint always needs access to the internet or the power apps connection will stop working?
The SharePoint Server needs access to the Gateway server. The Gateway server needs access to the internet. SharePoint does not need to talk to the internet directly.

Hi :D Well I.m making an Apps to makes order so I made 2 Database first one with the general information of the order and the status of it. And the second one with the detail of that order (Maybe want to order 2 or more sku in 1 order). So in the edit page I had 2 forms and a table. first form to actualize information of the order. The table to show de detail of sku in that order, And de second form to add or edit and selected sku in the table, this last form only apear que I click a button for new sku o edit a sku in the table. The connection between both table I did by a Key columns call Order Number. My problem is that when I want to create a new Order I could add new products in a collection, so If I submit it then I pass the information to my table inside my database, but if I cancel the order the collection never change my data in my table for detail data for sku. In other data base the change happen in cascade for the conections, but in powerapps I make that conecction manually so if I change something in the Data 1 it doest mean that ir will erase the data created in the Data 2. I know I can do a command to erase but the user can close the application while is creating an order. So I dont want to make any change until I submit all forms.

@@ShanesCows Hi Shane, I am also facing the same issue but I am using a free trial of power app, but I have a gateway already installed in the server and still I am not able to see the suggestion for the gateway. Is there anything related to license that causing the issue?
Hi Shane nice video i have tried switch all the data connections from Azure sql server to onprem due the budget issues, but after that my app becomes really slow in patching records or fetching records to gallery, though i am using collection, but for first time it takes long time to load. Patching is big issues it works fine but take to long time to complete the operation. Any tips from you to improve the performance
I love your videos, I wish you can talk about powerapps filter, like filter with name and the powerapps limitation .thanks
Thank you for the kind words. Do you mean talk about the whole delegation challenge? That would be a good video.
Do you have a tutorial for adding/viewing users in AD using onprem gateway in powerapps?
I don't, sorry. Haven't tried that one.
Hi Shane, sorry I really didn't get it when you says that Office 365 users doesn't have the abilty to use power app data connections? I mean I'm a Office 365 user and I can use data connection... so I don't know exactely what you mean with that. Can you clarify that point for me pls? Thank you, really appreciate it
Roberto I don't know what I was talking about. Can you leave a new comment with a time stamp and I will see if I can figure it out?
@@ShanesCows Hi Shane, is at 4:20 when you start to talk about some limits. Thnx man
@@robertomarra2431 Okay. I was talking about licensing. Which has changed a bit. The key thing for you to know is that using the Gateway with Power Apps or Automate it is a premium connector. That means anyone who uses that app needs a premium license. The base license included with O365 does not include a premium license.
Hi Shane, great video, thanks. Is it possible to use Azure AD SSO for authentication, do you have a video on that? I need help with this, thanks!
Dear Shane,
Please how can I use this logic with power automate?
Thank you
We love your videos.Thank you!!!
Thank you. 😻
thanks again, for the account i am using for the gateway, with the gateway be available for other users who create apps or only me.
You can choose to share it with others or not I am pretty sure.
Hi Shane, great video - thank you . Subscribed. I have a question - With the on premise gateway you can allocate data connections (from the www admin) - these can be setup - shared - etc with users (and those who are admins for the Gateway itself). What i am trying to understand, and take ownership on is who can use these - as it seems from the video you can make your own connections through the gateway, but what if we (as a business) only want people to use the ones made within the Gateway itself? this way we lmiit exposeure, stop people not using their own named accounts, etc.
Hey Lee I am not sure. Sorry I haven’t tried that scenario before
Dear community, by now im doing gateway connection same way like this video. But i got stucked with a message box "dont have license to use gateway". In my account I made lots of app over SQLServer previously even icon premiun was there. Any idea what should i do ?
The Gateway does require a premium Power Apps license. Maybe try going and signing up for the trial to see if you can get through the error?
@@ShanesCows It does require the Premium license as of year.2020.
thanks for a great video you made really easy to understand.
i have a question, what is more secure and faster, An azure sql database fed information from an on premise application OR an on premise sql database linked to powerapps via a gateway.
I haven't tested it but I am 99% sure that performance would be best going against an Azure SQL Database vs. an on-prem database.
Fantastic job! Thank you!!
Glad you liked it!
Hi Shane, can we in any way upload data from excel in the device to CDS entity without using OneDrive?
You could adapt what I show here to do that ruclips.net/video/QcWjAt7QVn4/видео.html
@@ShanesCows thanks, but if I want to achieve this without using SharePoint as well is there a way?
Hi @Shane, I am struggling to connect UiPath API to Power Apps, can share any ideas on it
Sorry, I have never used that API. Did you see this video? ruclips.net/video/gLhrHxvKBdI/видео.html Maybe it can give you something different to try.
So are we saying that for sharepoint 2016 on prem that your Sharepoint always needs access to the internet or the power apps connection will stop working?
The SharePoint Server needs access to the Gateway server. The Gateway server needs access to the internet. SharePoint does not need to talk to the internet directly.
@@ShanesCows Thanks Shane, so bottom line is my power apps will stop working if I lost internet capability.
I have a Gateway installed and i can see it in PowerBi but not Power Automate or Power Apps. What am I doing wrong?
Not sure. I haven’t ran into that before
Does the gateway need to be on the same network the the users?
The gateway and the server need to be on same network. Users don’t matter
Hi Shane. Thanks for the much informative video. Is it possible to have the data available in the PowerApp as a list so I can link it to a drop down column of another list like a Lookup?
Yes. I don’t exactly follow what you are trying to do?
@@ShanesCows Thanks Shane for the reply. Basically I want to link the data retrieved by the gateway to a dropdown in a SharePoint list. Can I do that with powerapps gateway or the data from the gateway only accessible with in powerapps?
Only in PowerApps. But you can customize your SharePoint list form with a PowerApps app. Would that work?
@@ShanesCows If i understood you correctly, sharepoint list can be converted to a powerapp and then it can be link to a powerapp created with gateway On Prem data to populate the data in to my list?
Try this video. Custom SharePoint List Form with PowerApps ruclips.net/video/Badj3_T8zAw/видео.html
Hi Shane, Is there any chance you can do this again but on Locally hosted PostgreSQL
Is it possible to create an app out of the box, based on SQL data, that is in tablet/16:9 format, or are we stuck with the phone layout?
Yes. All of my customer Apps (almost) use SQL. You start with a New, Blank Canvas app and then import your data source and design away.
Shane Young, ok. But I don’t get the app as “easy” as the example in the video, correct?
Thank you for your reply (and your videos).
Correct. You will have to build the app yourself.
Hey Shane, I have office 365 from organization .. I am getting repeatedly gateway error and I did install on premises gateway and showing up in Data - > Gateway .. Is this the reason that I am running on organization license O365 that I cannot access ?
I don’t know. Sorry
Are you getting 500 error? I am getting this {
"error": {
"code": 500,
"message": "Expression value is invalid. The template field is required.",

@@shashank2509 I resolved my issue by deleting all my connections and flow, making sure my on-premises gateway is running and when I am making connections, one of the field actually picks up the configured gateway..
Hi Shane, Kindly make a video to demonstrate "How PowerApps can be connected with Oracle via Gateway". Thanks,
I haven’t done it. Sorry. We have as a company but I don’t have a demo for it.
would it be the same process to connect to an on-premise Oracle DB?
Should be very similar 😀
hi, thanks for the video, u have a idea, how we can use the gateway for a onPrem Business central`?
Not sure Patrick. I haven’t done much with BC
@@ShanesCows ok
I WANT TO WORK WITH POWER BI AND POWERAPPS CAN 'I USE THE SAME GATEWAY OR NOT ???
SHOULD 'I DOWNLOAD A SECOND GATEWAY.
IST POSSIBLE TO DOWNLOAD MORE THAN 1 DATA GATEWAY IN THE SAME VM??

Hi Shane!
Is it necessary to install it on a virtual m/c?
No, you can install it on any machine on the network

Hi
Thanks for your video.
Please, do you have some tutorial about add a new datasource on PBI gateway using db2 database, with ODBC?
Thanks!
Hi Shane,
Please help me to understand, any update to the DataSource from the PowerApp is with connections account or with the gateway setup account.
Connection account.
@@ShanesCows Thank you !!
Hi Shane, excellent vids big thanks for this amazing free training.
I’m new to PowerApps but have powershell experience. Currently looking to use PowerApps to automate AD account creation on a hybrid environment, so need to create account on prem and not directly in AAD.
Been looking into how to execute a powershell script on prem via PowerApps and potentially using flow. is using this gateway part of the solution, or do you have any tutorial vids you can point me to which might help?
Thanks for any guidance you can provide 👍🏻
Hey Tony. I have not done this scenario with on prem... I am not sure what I would try here.
Shane Young Thanks for reply. Will let you know if I figure it out 👍🏻
Great video, thanks. One question, can we use gateway to connect to an on premise smtp server? Thanks in advance :)
Not that I know of. Sorry
Hi Shane! TKS a lot about this great video tutorial.
I have one question: Can we conect to Oracle Database too?
Regards,
Leandro.
I think you can. I have never done it but when I add a connector for Oracle it asks me for my Gateway. So I think yes.
Hi Shane, tks for your advice.
Success... In addiction, I had to install a driver (Oracle 11ghome1/ODAC) on my gateway machine host.
Regards,
Leandro.
Cool
Thanks a lot. Appreciate!
You're welcome!
Great video but I can't access "Gateways" in the location you say. Things have changed. How is this set up now in 2023? The setup of the on-premises gateway is exactly the same now as in your video. It's the on-line setup that is completely different.
Please can you describe how this is done now or create a new video. :)
Thank you Shane
You’re welcome 😊
Great videos!!!! If u can make a video of how to move all information from a collection to a table made from SharePoint list. And viceversa.
Thank you. Someone else asked for something very similar so there is a good chance. Can you give me more details on exactly what you are trying to accomplish? The more details, the closer hopefully the video is to an exact fit for you. Thanks
Hi, thanks for the video. How can i get PWA project sites into sql server? I need to get all project sites to get information and make historical reports. thanks
Yikes. I have no idea. Sorry
ProjectData or ProjectServerAPI.
Will this work with an E3 licence.. ?
Not for Power Apps. Any app with an on premise connection will be premium. None of the office licenses cover this.
@ShanesCows thank you very much for the info.. I take that the same applies to power automate..?
Thank you very much.
You are welcome!
mate do you have a video regarding how to create your own virtual machine?
I actually do. It is in the context of SharePoint but should work for you. ruclips.net/video/0g7t0E2rf2s/видео.html
