- Power BI is a data analysis tool that connects to many data sources. Suppose the data source for Power BI is located in an on-premises location. In that case, the connection from the cloud-based Power BI Service to the on-premises located data source should be created with an application called Gateway. In this post, you will learn what the Gateway is, the types of the gateway, their differences, installing the gateway, and scheduling a data set with that gateway.

Really helpful to understand the purpose of PowerBi Gateway as I was struggling to understand why PowerBI gateway is needed in an AWS Databricks env
Glad it was helpful
Fantastic job on this Reza!
Your Video was very clear and informativ.
I am leaving in Germany and your Video gave me a very good start.
Glad it was helpful!
@@RADACAD I am living in Germany. Your videos are very good.I use them very often.
Hello Sir,
We need clarity about the gateway, In our organization we use VPN for DB, So If the admin can create a report in powerBI means they are using VPN at that time. At that time only the remaining can see the report otherwise its showing error in the report.
Hi Sir, i am getting data from Jira, which is in the cloud ( before logging in to jira, i need to connect a VPN, then only i am able to log in to Jira account ).
The refresh is failing when i disconnect to VPN. For this i need to install Gateway in service.
enterprise seems very unique and powerful but i sometimes get issues using it. personal one is always good though. Thanks for the video!
My pleasure!
Very well explained. Thank you !!
Glad you liked it
I watched the whole video a couple of times. but I could not find my answer.
I have a problem now with my gateways. We have different customers with their workings spaces on Power BI that we want to connect their datasets on Power BI to their databases to Exact Online. The datasets are available through an On-premises gateway.
But when they are scheduled to be refreshed, the one that the credentials are applied works but if it happens at the same time with another dataset through the gateway it does not work and one of the datasets does not ger refereshed. My question is, do I have to create different gateways for every customer and working space or I can have one gateway for all of working spaces?
Nicely explained, thanks
Hi Reza! A very great and detailed video!
What if I need to bring data from the cloud into a local on premise power bi reporting server? I want to develop locally develop and publish a BI report that uses two types of data: 1) an on premise data sources that cannot be uploaded to the cloud 2)an enterprise level data sources that exist in the cloud. All the videos on on-premise gateway only talks about the flow of data from the on premise data source to the cloud, but not the other way around. Would you be able to provide some insights or maybe a tutorial video for this? Thank you very much..
Thanks for the video? If we need the gateway only for the on-premises database then how security is taken care when we connect to the database which is in cloud? Please explain
Thank you, this is very useful!
Glad to hear that!
Clearly explained..... thanks!
You're welcome!
Thanks for the comprehensive Explanation. Do we need Power BI gateway for Oracle Fusion DB Connection?
I have my SQL database in AWS RDS.
Is there some way to avoid using the gateway altogether, apart from hosting the database in Azure or using OneDrive/Sharepoint?
My model uses semantic models within my premium workspace as sources. Do i need a gateway? When i publish my model it is telling me i do ... Very confusing....
do we need gateway for direct query SQL ?as its kind of live connection
I have a problem setting up gateway. I am not able to connect to the datasource. It says impersonation error. Please see the below error Error message
The on-premises data gateway's service account failed to impersonate the user.
Error code
DM_GWPipeline_Gateway_ImpersonationError
Local Active Directory UPN
This helped a lot, thanks
Glad to hear!
The credentials are validated and able to fetch data on Power BI desktop, but the credentials are not validated on service side and thus not able to refresh the data when I type me windows user name and password how can I fix that???😊
hey man did you fix it because I am stuck in the same part
Hi, We are using on-premise PBI data gateway. The gateway is keep stopping automatically after every 2-3 days. How to find the root cause of this issue.
Great video indeed.
I have setup the gateway on my laptop connecting to the on prem sql database.
The gateway is running properly.
However, I am getting an error "On-premise data gateway failed to impersonate the user" while doing power bi dataset refresh.
Struggling to understand where I am going wrong.
I want to connect gateway installed (on my laptop) to file system of on-prem Linux server , could you please help me with that, Thank you.
I have a dataset stored in a PostgreSQL database and have successfully created a Power BI dashboard. However, I am encountering challenges while setting up the gateway in the Power BI service. The issue arises due to an additional layer of security in the form of a VPN that we use to access the database. How can I establish a connection between Power BI service and the PostgreSQL database considering the presence of VPN security?
wonderful, Thanks
excellent video thanks.
Can the on-prem gateway be installed on AWS or GCP?
What about if I have two clusters and my Power BI report use one source from first cluster and another source from the second cluster?
I tried but the report wouldn't refresh - is this limitation? Reports could use only
one cluster?
Suppose i have one sql server with many database i am creating report for that many database, as of now i am using one gateway connection only with different data source ,but is it effect on speed of reports or performance of reports while i am opening the reports
if so then how to do,
How gateway cluster will help in this regard
pls suggest
TIA
It depends on the connection type you use when you connect from Power BI to SQL Server. If you use DirectQuery, yes, it would be slow, and gateway can make it even slower. But if you use Import, then the time will be only spent at the time of refreshing your model, the Power BI runtime performance won't be affected by the gateway. I have videos about both DirectQuery and Import data in this channel.
I have two separate email with two complete separate Power BI accounts. Would I need separate gateways for each email domain?
You can share a gateway from one account to the other. The gateway have different access levels. you can give either admin access to both accounts. or give data source level permission under the gateway, so that the other account can use the same gateway.
@@RADACAD I think I was not clear enough. Yes you can share from one account to another within the same domain, but what if you are using two separate domain emails
What if i already have an API Gateway (Tyk or Kong gateway) in my infrastructure. What are the considerations / added values to add the Power BI Gateway in my infrastructure?
Not sure what do you mean by API gateway. If this is a gateway to work with a specific API, then it won't work with the Power BI connection. Power BI connection to your on-premises data sources will need a Power BI gateway.
Thank you for taking the time to reply. Im not referring to a specific API, but a "generic" component between the world wide web and protected resources (on premise). Like for example Tyk or Kong or Layer7 et cetera. For example... what if "Power BI Gateway" is a texteditor and you would recommend Microsoft Word. Can i use open office instead? or notepad? Ofcourse, this is not about what is best or not.
@@RADACAD"Power BI connection to your on-premises data sources will need a Power BI gateway" ... maybe i am asking the wrong question... is it possible to establish a Power BI connection to my on-premise data source with a "regular" Gateway? if not, what is so special about that Power BI Gateway compare to regular (API) Gateways?
watched your Gateway videos... but still can't get the connection to mySQL working :(
Nice exaplanation. 👍👍👍👍
Do I need a gateway to connect AWS RDS AWS RDS to Power BI service?
Also can you please do a video about how to connect AWS RDS to Power BI service?
I have the same issue. Did you find any solution to connect Power BI Service to AWS RDS PostgreSQL?

Excellent !
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks!
Well Done.👍
thanks
Nice Video, are you related to Tej Lavani, you look like twins
Do u have any idea what is going here (i am going crazy):
Gateway set on account #1. I use its connection for MySql query and Sharepoint on my dev account. Both connections are organizational. I made a dataflow in a Pro workspace with above mentioned connections. It can’t be refreshed due to the fact that these sources cannot be used in single query. It is ridiculous. It works in regular power query. Morover same dataflow works and can be refreshed in premium workspace. No logic behind the error. Any ideas?
Thank u so much
Thank you, great video, lots of detail
Very welcome
