It isn't the motors that make older Jouef locos so noisy, it's the convoluted brass gear trains employed.
I have 3 Jouef OO class 40 locos and they each make more noise than a room full of women, when running. I keep intending to experiment with adding some internal sponge foam, in order th dampen the racket, but have never gotten around to it.

One of my Jouef 0-6-0 Boer tank engines has a 3-pole motor, with s simple worm drive and gear, both nylon, and it's a howler. I keep it well lubricated but it's got a good voice.

@@patricksmodels I also have the Lima class 40. When compared, the Jouef model has superior detail, which includes the side cab sliding window levers. The paint & British Railways green colour finish is also far better and richer, on the Jouef class 40, than on the Lima class 40. I'm prepared to except the transmission noise, because of this.

@@CZ350tuner you're right, in details Jouef wins hands down against Lima. They managed to reduce some noise with the belt drive between motor and main drive shaft on some steam locomotives, my 140c231 and the open cab 040TA are quiet runners. The green closed cab 040TA on the other hand is a screamer: 3-pole motor with nylon motor gear coupled to an aluminium one on the drive shaft.
