This really shines a spotlight on how abuse really works. The face that the abuser shows the public versus the face that their victim sees behind closed doors is very different. I can tell you this unfortunately from experience because I'm a Survivor of domestic violence. I left two and a half years ago and it was the best decision I ever made. That being said, it's not as easy as just packing your bags and leaving. There's a lot that goes into why people stay or leave. Abuse happens in all walks of life. Also, usually the abuser is charming and well respected in the community. This was a good example of that. This is why victims are often met with disbelief when they come forward. I agree with the person who said the show was ahead of its time, it really was. All the good TV and music was before the 2000s.

The problem with what Shawn said, “he’s the VP of a bank and I live in a trailer park, who are they gonna believe?”
The unfortunate part of that conversation is that he isn’t wrong… the father likely would’ve used his power to the largest extent to keep it covered because he had money…

The difference, I know how I would have been after finding out this with a friend. I would've went and had a "talk" with her dad. That's not the "right" way but when it comes to abuse against women that was and still is a push on the wrong button.

This is just my theory so probably wrong but, he hits her "at night" because he's stressed from work and takes it out on her. She seeks out, yes he notices but since she's gone he can't hit her. He's no longer stressed when he sees her next and since he sucks he doesn't care where she was.

Most abuse child victims will tell you they're just an easy target for their abuser's anger and frustrations. It's not like abusive parents go through their day thinking about beating their kids when they get home like doing a hobby after work. Some are really evil who get pleasure from inflicting pain but mostly it's a case of kids being a convenient target so they stay clear out of the way or run away without being noticed.
