This show was brave enough at the time to call things out how they were really. It let the ones that had a chance to watch it know that what was going on in their life wasn't normal or those help those who were friends with them recognize the signs. It helped walk through solutions and gave those who didn't think anyone understood what was going on a sign that, yes, you're not alone.
These kinds of shows brings out a lot of truth to the real world problems. Abusive parents even though on the outside they might be great people. Secrets at home, that the kids know, but too scared to share.
OK... I'm seeing people not getting Cory's initial response to Shawn about the girl getting hit. is it really hard to believe someone with as structured/loving a family to even comprehend that someone's dad is abusive? sometimes we all do a double take when someone says something THAT serious to us. on some "wait, WHAT?" type shit. it would've definitely caught me off guard
I don’t think anyone is like “oh ya that makes sense, just look at the guy”. Abusers are really good at blending in. I had a friend that hit one of his girlfriends years ago and I was shocked. Not because of his background but because I thought I knew him.
To be honest it was sort of the same to me a couple years ago when I heard about what someone I knew was going through: it took me completely by surprise because it just horrified me that someone’s parents could be that horrible to their child
Also, kids were still getting “hit” or spanked or “whooped” as corporal punishment in the 90s. So, Cory, though never hit, was maybe clarifying if she was part of that antiquated punishment.
It’s hard to comprehend immediately or accept when someone you know or someone close to you tells you something devastating. Look at the character Clair, she looks so innocent and sweet like why would any father/parent do something like that to their child? That’s why he couldn’t believe it at first… I love how this show try’s to relate the feeling to the audience
