that was my first impression when i first played one (never bought one though) and there is a bit of a learning curve. since the strings are loose and made of rubber, they roll when you press them and you cant slide at all or let them roll or the note goes off. they also dont have physical frets and you have to be pretty accurate where you press
@@chickenbobbobbais sounds like my first experience with a classical guitar 😅 though i am guessing a classical guitar might have more string tension, and obviously these have frets
Honestly in a studio context you could probably just double track it and it may take the place of a proper upright. Or you could just double track it with a real one, that'd work too.
Sound quality isnt the problem. The stings have to be large to give volume to the low pitches. Bc physics. You can make an acoustic bass guitar or even an acoustic ukulele but it wont be practical bc it will be quiet as hell. And you will need an amp. And if you are using an amp anyway why won't you just use the electric bass?
@@WillieWeed Upright basses can also use pick ups depending on the genre though in this case with the pizz, it is likely a gig in a bar or something so an amp is likely but not necessary cos the bass is strong like that
ubass has a tighter low end with less midrange, the upright bass has high mids and low end mixed with center mids working together for that big acoustic sound.
Said by someone who has never played neither. I own the little uke. He forgets to mention it has a pickup inside. Much louder from an amp than you will ever get from that huge upright. Maybe you should know what you're talking about
He forgets to mention the huge fact the uke is electric. It has a pickup. When plugged into the smallest of portable amplifiers it blows away the upright. Edit- I should know. I take the mini uke with my portable 30 everywhere I go. That and my dog.
Honestly to a man who only listens to jazz, the upright sounded as expected, but the ukulele sounded like someone plucking thick rubber bands. Can’t say I’m convinced, but it’s a unique instrument! Keep up the great content and brilliant playing!
That is about the dumbest thing I've ever read in over a decade on YT!! He totally forgets (on purpose) to mention this uke behs is also electric. I own one and play it all the time. You obviously have never played an instrument in your life.
I use the Kala U-Bass in big bands with Aquilla Thunderbrown strings. The little bass needs and amp, of course, but in a large ensemble so does the upright. In that context the little bass shines. I get only praise for the sound.
I recorded a ukulele group once who was doing some reggae music. One guy played a ukulele bass. The pick up sounded great, but I also put a condenser mic in front of it to get that woody sound. It sounded really good.
sounds great, honestly though i think part of why i love upright is the feel it has from being so big - it feels like im more in control - not to mention its a lot louder!
@@WillieWeed I actually have played both, although briefly. But you don't need to play them to be able to tell what they sound like. It's just a fact that double basses have more high overtones in their sound. How could they not? This is why the 2 instruments don't sound exactly the same. It's why double basses don't sound exactly like electric basses.
@@WillieWeed I'm never going to tell someone not to buy a uke bass if that's what they want. I'd buy one if I thought I'd ever actually use it. Do what makes you happy.
Im 90% sure you miked the uke and not the upright, or put it closer to the mic. Can tell you that in person the upright really fills a room, especially with a good rig. But also uke has an interesting tone unlike any other
For those who have never heard a u-bass in real life, plugged into an amp. They sound even better and totally usable as the permanent bass instrument in a band, in particular if you want the kind of sound and lines similar to an upright.
It has some similar characteristics and a neat sound for what it is but clearly not an equivalent substitute by any means. But the convenience adds a lot for a lot of use cases and it might not need to be identical.
Hey Danny , have you ever tried real gut strings to get that 1940's and 1950's authentic sound in all those jazz , country , rockabilly and swing recordings from that period. I went over to gut strings and it changed my playing and outlook on the double bass for ever ,,, they sound great....
I have both - 1947-53 (not sure of exact age) E. German Goetz upright and a mahogany Kala fretless with the rubber strings. Not quite the same, but works well as a pinch-hitter, and WAY more portable!!
If I ever see a band with a bassist unironically playing a uke bass in the lineup, instantly into the trash. The fact anyone takes them seriously is astounding
The uku-bass, or what ever, sounded a lot more soft, like there was a blanket over the microphone. The upright(?) bass is more crispier, like same as the uke but without the blanket. All in all they sound pretty similar.
alot better than I expected it to sound
that was my first impression when i first played one (never bought one though) and there is a bit of a learning curve.

That tiny guy sounds pretty damn good
Its about average.
tiny? thats pretty big
@@jj8703 😂
I love mine. That and my dog go everywhere with me
I like the sound of that bass ukulele..i didnt even know those were a thing..i bet it would sound good accompanied with a mandolin
the uke is a lot warmer, the double bass is a lot more percussive and expressive. both sound super snazzy!
Did you mean snazzy or jazzy?
Probably snazzy
@@lpoperz2197snazzy. Very snazzy
@razzmatazzduck
It has snazz?
That's not a just bass, it's a *tropical* bass
Fish joke😊
@@AngryecksButActually its a little *fishy* aint it?
tropical behs
Wise choice
snazzy? We want snazz!!
dont forget that that upright is shaking the whole building, while that uke would be lucky to shake the hands of whoever plays it
You forget the little behs plugs into an amp. The big one, no pickup. Which one is shaking the building again?
@@WillieWeed Upright basses can also use pick ups depending on the genre though in this case with the pizz, it is likely a gig in a bar or something so an amp is likely but not necessary cos the bass is strong like that

Tiny bass got some thump! 👍🏽
I like the warmth of the uke. A very smooth tone. Super pleasing to my ears and senses. I could listen to it for hours.
Not a bad sound, but not even close to an actual upright
And the better sound can be yours for a mere 500 additional pounds.
@@rayweeboyboth price and weight 😂😂😂

@@WillieWeed they meant the sound of the thing
It’s smaller, lighter and a lot less expensive. I’d go for the uke bass!!
Damn, wasn't expecting it to sound that close
He forgets to mention the huge fact the uke is electric. It has a pickup. When plugged into the smallest of portable amplifiers it blows away the upright.
Edit- I should know. I take the mini uke with my portable 30 everywhere I go. That and my dog.
the resonance of the small bass is nicer than i expected, and still gets the sound of an upright pretty well!
I love my fretless u bass, it’s so portable compared to other basses
Honestly to a man who only listens to jazz, the upright sounded as expected, but the ukulele sounded like someone plucking thick rubber bands. Can’t say I’m convinced, but it’s a unique instrument! Keep up the great content and brilliant playing!
That's not a coincidence.
He is litteraly plucking thick rubber bands.
It doesn’t sound the same, but it does fill most of the same spot, sonically. Totally works in most contexts
Both sounds similar but one obviously has a larger body to echo from while the other doesn't but both are acceptable
I'm a guitar player and love this 'Behs' channel.. love it. 🫶🏽 More Behs please :)
Freted is always nicer really.
The smaller one seems to have such good personality
A lot better than I expected, however there is something that you get from the bigger one sound wise that you don't from the smaller.
That is about the dumbest thing I've ever read in over a decade on YT!! He totally forgets (on purpose) to mention this uke behs is also electric. I own one and play it all the time. You obviously have never played an instrument in your life.
Love your channel man
Kinda sounds like an upright bass midi, which is way better than I was expecting
I use the Kala U-Bass in big bands with Aquilla Thunderbrown strings. The little bass needs and amp, of course, but in a large ensemble so does the upright. In that context the little bass shines. I get only praise for the sound.
I honestly like those little use basses more than I thought. They’re a lot of fun to play
He really loves sayin 'Behs' anddit makes me chuckle :)))))
I liked it when he said B E H S
I watch these videos for this exact reason 😁
Totally different. Upright for ever better and stronger
🐂💩! I own the mini uke. He forgets to mention it's also electric
The U-bass has a clearer sound imo. Against the pizz anyways
Sound better than I expected. I guess it might be a nice travelling tropical bass
Waayyy better than i previously thought the quality of that small bass would sound lol
The uke has less resona ts which gives it a wamer, fuzzier, rubberbandy sound. The upwright double has a fuller tone do to larger size and resonance
The uke sounds lime what I imagined rubber bands would sound like as bass strings
That is extremely accurate holy shit😮
It sounds like a virtually emulated upright. So fairly good
Closer than i would have predicted
The tiny one actually sounds warmer than the big boi
It doesn't sound like double bass but a Ukabass has a very cool unique sound
If I heard the Uke bass without context I would assume it was an upright.
didn’t replicate the sound of the upright but definitely had some bite to it
I recorded a ukulele group once who was doing some reggae music. One guy played a ukulele bass. The pick up sounded great, but I also put a condenser mic in front of it to get that woody sound. It sounded really good.
Uke behs has good punchy sound!
I like the tiny bass better
It's not about the size, it's how you make her sound
Little thing sounds better than the biggy to my 👂
underrated af
That bass line hella reminds me of the original backyard baseball
That tune sounds familiar
Little fellow sounds great
sounds great, honestly though i think part of why i love upright is the feel it has from being so big - it feels like im more in control - not to mention its a lot louder!
I’m impressed with the ubass. Just picked one up
love the tones but i would love for you to try recreating the swans bass tone
Giving my vote best tone to u bass. It's got more of that modern soul static.
Now I want one
I so much want a double behs. Had a go of one once, they sound fab!
Y need Big strong Amp to amplify the Ukulele, but the Double Bass just needs a room to shake it!
Not bad , not bad
When he played the upright bass he looked like the hot fries guy
Really damn good
Uke bass sounds cool, but nothing can beat the overtones you get out of the big double bass body.

Action Bronson galactic love bass tone
Sounds slightly brighter but it can pretty close very noice
Little Man sounds great lovely ❤❤❤❤
The Ike bass sounds more like an electric bass
That's pretty impressive.
They're close but the bigger one has more resonant feel to it
Great Sound gotta get one
Those ukulele basses are so fun. Those rubber strings are cook
You can get flat wound strings for the uke bass and it gets even closer and is easier to tune and play 😊
Could be cool to have a song where theyre played in sync, or kinda dance around eachother
Naturally when it comes to bass, bigger body is better, but the little feller still sounds warm and nice

Pretty good
U-basses are very fun. It's also a great option for beginner fingers since the strings are all rubbery
Doesn’t sound the same but those UKE basses sure have an unmatched charm to them. I’ve always loved the sound of one
There's definitely a difference in sound. The upright bass had a more hollow metallic tone to it while the ukulele bass sounded more rubbery.
i remember seeing that small bass at a music store in the Philippines and calling it "doughy-strings"

This ukubass sounds a lot brighter, but if you did a blindtest I wouldn’t have known which was which
Tineh behs good!
So I strung my ukelele with shoe strings
