  • Discovered in 1881, Colorado’s own Cave of the Winds in Colorado Springs is one of the longest continuous running tourist attractions in the state. This Colorado cave is one of the premier caves in the United States and at 7,000 feet in elevation it’s also one of the highest.
As someone who was born and raised in Colorado Springs, I’ve enjoyed visiting Cave of the Winds Mountain Park since I was a kid. And it’s still a fun and interesting activity for me to this day.
If you’re wondering what it’s like to visit Cave of the Winds Park as a local and all the things to do, keep watching.

Used to offer group tours of the Manitou grands a cave alongside cave of the winds. It was an unimproved cave, you took flashlights and throwaway clothes because you were getting muddy, great experience.

I remember going to the Cave of the Winds in Pikes Peak, Colorado! But there was something that really freaked me out. They took our lanterns, blew them out, and told the story of how this chairman fell off from the cliff, then drooooooooooppppppping down, and then, BAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It echoed throughout the entire cave! It was the loudest bang I had ever heard in my life! I thought it was cool how it echoed throughout the cave for like 5 seconds or so, but st the same time, it also scared the hecking daylights out of me, I'm not lying to you! That's the scariest thing about the Cave of the Winds, at least that's what I think.

Wow, sounds crazy! They didn't do that when we toured it a couple weeks ago but the ghost stories are still scary for sure. And the giant pit!

I went to Cave of Winds in Colorado Spring back at the end of last May as one of the highlights of my Colorado trip. The drive up to the parking area was a fun experience since I live in Florida. As for the building and outdoor activities areas was not very impressive to me which it felt like tourist trap feel. Yet, the views of the canyon areas are very beautiful and impressive. I took the Discovery and Haunted Lantern tours during my day there. I enjoyed the Discovery tour due to my great lady tour guide and she cared for the safety of everyone in the tour. One reason that Cave of Winds has a rule that you are prohibited from touching the cave walls (bare skin and clothed) which it could damage the cave. Yet, my tour guide added that if you feel you are going to fall which it is ok to brace yourself to wall to prevent any falling injure. As for the Haunted Lantern tour, it was interesting, but underwhelming with cheesy ghost stories and a lot of kneeling down due to low ceiling in that part of the cave. Overall, I would give Cave of Winds 3.5 out of 5 stars and I might revisit again, but not too soon.

It's true that Cave of the Winds is pretty high up in elevation, but the caves are definitely a must visit. And all of the kid-friendly things too!
