Hello from Russia, bro, you are a good specialist, but let me note that hammering the steering rack with a hammer is not the best idea, if you want to save rods and ball bearings when replacing steering racks, then I will use pullers of steering rods,ball bearings and steering tips, they do not cost a lot of money, they will help faster and more efficiently Get the job done!😊
I have a 1999 VT Wagon too, it was stolen and recovered and a couple of days, They were seen doing donuts and when the car was found the power steering fluid was empty and leaking. I Believe the rack is destroyed. Do you know where I can get a reco one? And I am in Victoria too

Sorry for my late reply. Most of these rack and pinions have different pipe fittings. Make sure you get the right ones.

I think somewhere here in Dandenong area, try to google it. You buy a reconditioned and swap the old one to the supplier.
