    7:55 They explain it a bit better in the book, but basically the Mormons put forward several lawsuits to get their ship back. However, the OPA has their hands in all the Belter courts and won't accept any verdict from an Earth court. There's a quote from the book that goes something like "I guess the OPA really is a government now, because only a government can get away with that level of thievery".

    12:07 when Ty and That Guy interviewed the actress who played Anna, she specifically called out the actress who played her wife. Apparently she came to set for every scene she spoke to Anna in and read her lines off camera. Nobody asked her to. There were script supervisors and assistants who would often do that. She insisted on being there for Anna to play off of. Amazing commitment.

      also, not precisely a spoiler, because it is described in this scene in the book; Melba is augmented with black market mods that trigger an extreme adrenal response. and I think I remember them writing that she's also augmented with some synthetic musculature (I might be misremembering that part). So the adrenal spike reproduces the "mama lifting a car" response when she triggers the gland by clicking her jaw in a certain way.

    Anna Volovodov has a slightly different introduction in the books and her role is super interesting. The main reason for her being on the journey to the ring is twofold. First, to act as a religious leader and emotional support for the other members of the crew (which in the books is massive) because of the stressful nature of the mission. The second reason, the more interesting one for me, is to consider how the possibility of alien life can be introduced into the religious and social framework of society in a way that doesn't destabilize the system. Remember, at this point, the protomolecule has killed thousands, caused a war, made human monsters, and constructed a ring that traveled across the solar system without following the laws of physics and was observable by almost all humanity for months. The idea that the protomolecule is a weapon and aliens are coming to conquer is just a stone's throw away...

    • @Trepanation21
      @Trepanation21 8 месяцев назад +1

      Similarly, in the military, a Chaplain is meant to function as a versatile counselor, with or without a religious focus (at least in my experience). I view Anna's "job" in this as similar to that, but because she's so excellent, she was chosen _specifically_ for her sensitivity and humanity in such a tremendous role... A proper, _official_ "first contact".

    A lovely book quote to help fill anyone in on this Nauvoo -> Behemoth change-over:
    "That's the kind of theft only governments can get away with" Amos remarked, "I guess the OPA's real thing now".
    (A kind reminder that because A CERTAIN undersecretary at the UN started a war between Earth and Mars that blew most of both fleets into scrap they've now somewhat lost their previously iron grip on the belt and outer planets, and have started dealing with Fred, Dawes and co. Hence the OPA's need for a flagship/symbol/statement.)

    It really makes more sense to carry non-technical people such as artists and religious people to observe an alien artifact than merely technicians. We have no idea how aliens think or why they would build such an artifact...non-technical artists and philosophers may see connections that technicians do not see. Throwing all kinds of thoughtful people with broadly different viewpoints at the problem was smart.
    I read the credits, I figured it would have been a flashback scene with Miller.

    • @Yesquire0
      @Yesquire0 8 месяцев назад

      I have my doubts about the usefulness of including religious leaders in the expedition to The Ring. I don't think they will add anything to mankind's knowledge. But there is no doubt that proof of the existence of an alien race will do massive damage to the doctrines of many major religiions, so the leaders of all those sects will want to protect their turf by sending agents to monitor the investigation and put their own spin on whatever is found out at the ring.
      It not so much my own opinion, but what has been shown in just about every sci-fi movie in the past where first contact was a major theme. The religious angle is included in just about all of them, so it is no surprise we see it in The Expanse.

    First planned expedition to a legitimately alien artifact that’s upending everything mankind knows; why not send clergy? At this point, the Ring is pretty much supernatural. And yeah, Anna’s working for Avasarala like everyone else on that ship - it’s the UN’s expedition, so Avasarala is, in effect, their boss. And yes, the expedition consists of physicists and STEM types, of course, to study it; military to assess threats; journalists to document; linguists, economists, philosophers, poets, and a pastor like Anna to provide a religious perspective. Because how does a _literal alien artifact_ fit with faith? People are still religious in this world, and they’ll want answers too. Makes sense to me, and I’m not religious. “Should have sent a poet” as the scientist in Contact says, when she realizes she won’t be able to fully communicate her experience through science alone.

    Delta-V (or △V) is a physics term for "change in velocity." In this case, it refers to the sudden & catastrophic deceleration experienced by Maneo's ship when he hit the ring.

    If you crash in a high-speed chase, it's not the speed that kills you - It's the sudden stop (& that is pretty accurate as to what would happen, at those speeds).

    1) I think the priest is there to comfort the people back Earth who feel safer knowing that a priest is on that mission, that's it. It's the event of the century, everyone wants to be there or be represented by someone there.
    2) I think the reason the belters have private conversations so close is because in space they have to touch helmets together to do so and the habit sticks with them.

    In the book the contingent of artists, religious representatives, etc are referred to as the dog and pony show. There are good reasons to have those people make the trip out to the ring with the scientists and military, but the real reason they were sent was politics and the appearance of doing something serious in the face of something nobody understands. For some that went, the object was looking important and self-promotion. Others, like Anna, are genuinely interested in the ring, in understanding what it is and what it means.

    The ship transporting the peace mission. Rather than bring all soldiers they bring civilians too.
    Scientists: How does this event fit in with our understanding of the universe?
    Artists: How does/will this event express in our culture?
    *Priest:* How does this event fit in with our cultural understanding of our place in the universe?
    I wouldn't be surprised by a strong religious element in Earth society. Most people are sitting idle, no identity/meaning through career, no identity/meaning through a function you provide to your community, family, etc.
    Religion and the community structure it provides is probably important than it is today. The Mormons can afford to build a multi-generational colony ship - evidence that collection plates are getting filled.

    Yeah, I think the spoiler warnings are kind of ridiculous, and most people would either miss it or assume Miller is in a flashback or an archival vid of some sort. I can't see it spoiling the end scene.
    I enjoyed the Belter renditions of those classic songs. Also loved David Strathairn's Pirate-Belter accent. Piratespeak is apparently alive and well in the 24th century.
    Since the Ring is extra-solar , I'm guessing the religious contingent might be interested in if there are clues about the civilization that designed it and their belief systems.

    One thing to keep in mind when watch this part of season three is that the SyFy network had already announced that they were not picking the show up after the end of the season. So the cast and crew were pretty much under the understanding that the show as being canceled once they were finished filming ep 13.

    • @amarokorama
      @amarokorama 8 месяцев назад

      Completely wrong. SyFy announced the "cancellation" May 10th, 2018, after broadcast of S03E05 "Triple Point". And already 16 days later, on May 26th, 2018, it was announced that Amazon would be picking up the show. Since season 3 was planned, written, and filmed long before the broadcast of S03E01, cast and crew certainly did NOT know that SyFy would drop out. There's an Entertainment Weekly interview with showrunner Naren Shankar, where he explains why he decided to adapt book 3 in just half a season. Knowledge or fears of cancellation had nothing to do with it. Also, Daniel Abraham, one of the two authors of the book series, even suggested to Shankar that they could skip book 3 entirely! (Source: CBR interview about the series finale, full of spoilers obviously).

Buckle up peeps, that was unexpected is the mantra going forward all the way to the series finale. Also pay attention to the Martians on Bobbi’s team later on. You might catch a Canadian heart throb whose career took off in a big way recently in one of his earliest TV roles! 😉

    I'm a stone cold atheist but it makes perfect sense to me that you would send religious leaders and theologians to the ring. This isn't just a scientific discovery, it's the most amazing thing that's happened in human history and re-shapes humanities relationship to the cosmos and life itself. Adapting to it is a philosophical and spiritual matter as much as anything else.
