I fish the same way when bluegills are on beds, it’s a blast. I had two crazy things happen last year. A 4 pound small mouth on popping bug, and a 22 pound buffalo carp. Had to chase both with trolling motor.

That is my 89 year old dads favorite fishing. Every May I take a week off work when the spawn starts. I take my dad fishing every day. We have never used tippers and leaders. We use 10lb mono. It helps float the spiders better and will rip them off lily pads and reeds without breakin. It doesn't seem to effect the fish any. We use Betts black sponge spiders. When we hit it right. We catch between 100-200 Big Bluegills each day. We only keep 6 a day and no more than 3 off one set of beds. Also won't keep anything over 9.5 inches.

Thanks for the fly fishing trip. It reminded me of going to Wyoming to fish with my new brother in law nearly forty years ago. Your much better at fly fishing than I was. My brother in law explained to me quickly the fly fishing was for tourists and people in Wyoming fish with worms. We caught some nice trout in small creeks with plain old earth worms. Probably saved him a fly rod.
Thank you for lifting everyone’s spirits when times are tough.

I love catching panfish on flies. I even run a couple miles down the road to fish a little pond on my lunch break at work. If nothing else, it keeps me in casting practice. Also, you never know if your going to hook into a largemouth. I was gifted a nice, vintage Wright & McGill 3/5wt rod, and I'm getting a 3/4wt MaxCatch Eco reel (brown trout color) for Christmas. I also have a cheap Pfleuger 5/6wt combo I got from Dick's years ago. Next step, probably a 7/8wt for light saltwater fishing. (Schoolie stripers, snapper blues, weakies, etc.) That's the best thing about living in South Jersey...both freshwater and saltwater opportunities! Keep up the good work!

It’s so good to see another fisherman having fun I just love your videos man. I mostly bottom fish for catfish and carp now but I grew up on the Stockton delta bank fishing for stripper and sturgeon. At a certain point I started float tubing with a nine foot nine weight fly Rod and those stripper would tow me around while I reeled them in that was fun. Watching you fish with light line made me go get a light spinning Rod and that is a lot of fun after years of heavy ugly stiks for cats. Fishing is where I feel close to nature. I’m an OTR Trucker and I keep a Rod in the truck so I’m always ready just pick up a day license and go. Thank you for these videos.

I grew up fishing creeks and ponds with ultralight tackle and fly rods. Big shell crackers and bluegill were for eating, and smallmouth were for fighting and releasing. The first rod I bought my wife was a fly rod and we would spend hours with popping bugs and cook fish for our friends and later our kids and friends. Love to see you changing it up and bringing back old memories.
It’s so nice to watch a channel where your not a fishing snob. A real fisherman likes the challenge of catching all species of fish. Thanks Richard.

Richard. I was excited to see you pick up a fly rod. Like you I first learned to fish with a fly rod as a 10 y/o. My father fished almost exclusively
with the fly. He was born in Lacy Springs and grew up in Guntersville. Although I have fished cold water all over the country I have enjoyed catching in the salt as well. As you know having spent much of your life near the salt it can be very effective for many salt water species. My greatest joy now is pursuing stream smallmouth. I have also developed a a great interest in fishing for Alabama Bass and Coosa Bass species on the streams like the Coosa and Tallapoosa Rivers in Al and others in Al, Tn and Georgia. I really enjoy your videos. I watch everything you produce. I appreciate you and look forward to seeing you chase Bass on Guntersville with your fly rod. Thanks so much. Bill May
