I'm a metal head by trade, however, my father who grew played guitar in the 40's and 50's, loved Wes Montgomery, Les Paul, Tony Mattola. I know that someone did in fact know that it was "Misty", which was one of my dad's favorite pieces and taught it to me too! Thanks Phil for sitting in for my pop!
Being a VERY lucky owner of a 1955 Super 400 CES (Gibson shipped 16 of these in 1955!), I can attest, this instrument is unquestionably one of the finest, most versatile guitars ever made. Plays like butter. Killer, full tone. Every note/nuance rings clear as a bell. Great for just about any genre of music (except hard rock shredders.) Really awesome for Jump Blues/ Swing stuff. Found/bought it on EBAY! +/-15 yrs ago! No other guitar comes close. Had been looking for one for 10 years. Anyone who has one ain't selling. I understand completely. Irreplaceable.
When you said that you were going to amaze yourself with something you learned way back when, I wasn't expecting an awesome Misty chord melody. HELL YEA
In my experience hollowbodies/semihollowbodies handle distortion VERY well. Sometimes better than solidbodies. It's just the feedback that makes them a bit of a pain.
@@themodernguitarist semi hollows don’t have as much of a feedback issue with the center block and especially if you have a good set of humbuckers. But if an issue arose you could always tape off the f-holes if you want an angry musicians boot stuck in your f hole
I just learned to Love Phil, How be plays guitars unbiased on the genres they are associated with. I mean we dont always see a huge Super 400 being played for Rock
@MusicMan44144 I love bouzouki and rebetika music. My best friend is Greek and he always used to listen to rebetika music when we were driving around in his car in South Africa and I liked a lot of it. My favorite song was O kapetanakis. Greetings from Hungary.
he could have even played some early beatles that would have been interesting, like "til there was you" which has a nice solo by George or some of their other early ballads like "and I Love her" or "Girl" or "If I fell"
Would it still be a treasured Gibson Super 400 CES after 60 years of this Rockin' or should I suggest Wrekin' playing? Great playing tho! I suppose that's why we have so many great guitars for different styles and I have a small selection here for our many moods of playing.
Yo Phil, amazing playing dude, keep the way of the guitar alive! You should try playing some more darker stuff to show how mean the guitar can go from time to time. You've been doing very well, but I'd like to hear some stuff like Black Sabbath, Godsmack, Disturbed and other great metal bands. Keep it going Phil, keep rocking, and I'll keep watching. PHIL X!
When Phil rocks out on these guitars (4:16) he's demonstrating what they sound like when they are played and that they *can* be played. Banging on strings has very little effect on a guitar. He's not abusing or even being rough with them. He's letting them live.
Sounds like a real good guitar. Great demo, I have to admit though that sometimes when you kick in the distortion or overdrive like at 7:00 I think you might start playing "Playground" by XTC. I might have to request that song some time.
LOL! "If u noticed when we started my hair was here, now it's here. It's CRAZY! stuff GROWS!" that's the same excuse I give my friends for why my hair is so long!
Misty was written by the inimitable Erroll Garner, a virtuoso jazz pianist. The song has been covered as much as any song in history. Erroll wrote it on a plane while staring out the window. Said it came to him in 10 minutes. A beautiful song not really done justice by Phil X, which shows that jazz is not for fooling around. As great as Phil is, playing songs with lots of moving harmony needs to be studied and practiced.
All these poor little jazz box guys... Only their genre can be played on such an instrument? Is that what the Jazz community is now? Saggy old sad sacks with self righteous opinions that mean more than others? I mean, it’s been a while since I’ve personally played with Jazz musicians and they were some cool cats. All these comment section Jazz holes need to get out more... 😉😘

The tune you were playing is called "Misty" It's been performed by many artists but the most popular version was done by Johnny Mathis.
Phil X, PLEASE do not stop rocking out on these beautiful guitars. You're freaking AWESOME!!!!
When you said that you were going to amaze yourself with something you learned way back when, I wasn't expecting an awesome Misty chord melody. HELL YEA
This guitar actually sounds pretty good when doing hard rock. Didn't expect it to be a hard rock guitar.

Heavy distortion on a Super 400 is one of the most exciting things imaginable. Guitar-wise.
Great video! awesome playing, great sounds, and you are having fun!
This is one sweet sounding guitar!!! Went straight into my top 3 favorite "Phil X" guitars.
Yesssssss, Phil X, you have no idea how long I've been waiting for you to do some Elvis. Killer awesome.

So jazzy! ;D and bluesy :p
Hey, are you choose this gibson or gretsch 6122 country gentleman for jazz and rocknroll ?

The tune you were playing but couldn't remember the name of is "Misty" by Erroll Garner.
Phil X is one great guitarrist
Play guitar the way you want to play, Jazz box or no jazz box.
Lovely guitar man and tune he played in the beginning is a jazz standard called misty!
So jazzy! ;D
I wish I lived back then (with the amount of money I have today, of course :P) Then I would be able to buy all those nice guitars! :D
Yo Dusty! Sweet tattoo bro!!!

Big Ron
@gavquinn Misty. Not sure who the composer was but alot of people have done it. Johnny smith, joe pass, barney kessel, etc.
Nice guitar dude
@Galgofrit thanks man, but who is the artist?
All these poor little jazz box guys... Only their genre can be played on such an instrument? Is that what the Jazz community is now? WOW, that bouzuki thing (spelling, sorry, i know no greek) really sounded like some brazilian mandolin or cavaquinho choro. blew my mind.
holy molly, this guitar sounds fucking great even for some rock tunes
The song is called Misty
AWH you cut the Drills' song at the best part.
'Ok so this is a bazuki thingy' ; and proceeds to casually set alight to the fretboard with those possessed demon fingers of his!
i was watchin u play all those ted nugent songs on this git and i was lke plz plz play cat scratch fever and YOU DID!!!!
Hey, isn't that the same model of Gibson that Bill Haley used on Rock Around the Clock on?
+James Smith Yes, But Bill Haley had a full acoustic version in a blonde colour, and had an after market floating Dearmond pickup at the neck.
@TrentonJoe1 hey man what is your problem ?
Shit, that sounds AMAZING!
Is that the model Bill Hayley used to play?
Got to be Sammy Hagar's kid... Lol!!
I was just thinking that!
Is the first Song 1:38 Hellsing? I'll check the Soundtrack
HelLL YEAH !
is that stormy weather he plays? first song...
Hey, what's a session guitarist?

Can anybody tell me the last song's name?
What's the bozouki song called at 5:45?
Whats the song he plays at 7 min???!!
Someone please tell me what's the name of the first song
The first (somewhat "jazzy") song he played is called "Misty". It's a common jazz standard.
"Play Misty for me"
he is jazz like Hendrix was country
@whatistheretotype
Because this is a guitar meant for rich collectors, not for actual crazy guitar players...although I wish it wasn't the case!
No middle position playing :o(
Anyvody knows what he's playing at 01:36???
the name of the first song is "misty" and he is playing the frank sinatras's version
