Did you ever go to the fridge open in out of habit then think to yourself " I'm not even hungry what am I doing " ?

It could be that some/all species of orca have evolved to understand the importance of regimental training in the way the army trains.
So at X time of day, they all wake up and go do whatever (swim for a bit, or hunt) then after a certain period they allot themselves some social time for a bit and then after it's time to train their hunting skills, then after it's time to eat and so on and so on. Steve and his crew could have just stumbled across that one time of day where it was time to train and hone their hunting skills.
I have no idea but that's my observation. If there's a pod hierarchy, then it certainly would be evidence of some kind of regimented system that guides their daily routines.

I think it's also possible that all the stress suffered by the prey animal makes the meat 'taste' bad.

The reason Victorians didn’t like Darwin’s Evolution Theory was it contradicted their “All Creatures Great and Small” attitude.

Orcas tormenting sea lions and eating the livers only out of White Pointers, California squirrels hunting and eating voles, dolphins getting sexually aggressive with female humans, chimpanzee on chimpanzee violence, Bonobos recreational boinking: Animals are creepier than most people know.

You really ask why a killer whale would kill for the sake of killing? The name kind of gives it away..

sooo. they are like humans then eh? Sad. Many predators do "surplus killing". Seems pretty obvious to me that they do it - not for "sport" but to keep their skills sharp when they aren't hungry or starving. Its less pressure then and they can try out other techniques without risk of going hungry. Seems like a sensible adaptation even though terrible at the same time for the victims. Maybe that's how it got into us to as "sport"? I wish we could see that and not do it, but here we are.

    oh, give it a rest
it's not cruel, it's what they do. and teaching is most effective when the lesson does not have big stakes.
