Thank you! I agree I really like the plain look with no twist, but I also see why people like the twist. I definitely want to try and twist it in the future, but thanks for sharing your opinion! I appreciate it!
@@NolansKnives If you do ever try the twist I recommend doing a fourths twist, you beat the spike, twist it ninety degrees, then put it back in the forge, you repeat this process until you've twisted the spike 360 degrees, or at least that's how I like to do it. It gives a really even twist that looks nice and clean.
Yes, steel used to make the majority of horseshoes is A-36 mild steel. It has low carbon content. But, you can still make a knife as a decoration or use the horseshoe as the handle and use a high carbon steel for the blade. I made a few RR spike knives where I used the spike itself as a handle and welded a piece of 1095 high carbon to it as the blade. Turned out great! I also took a piece of steel cable and forged it into damascus, then shaped it to look like a RR spike knife. It also turned out great. I believe the cable I used is also made of 1095 hc steel. It was an old piece of cable from a gantry crane.
@@joescopo8933 Thanks for giving me such a comprehensive answer. I once found a piece of nice hard steel - in fact it was a drive shaft in s dot matrix printer. I forged it into a dagger - though I was trying to make a spear- head - and successfully hardened it. I don't think I knew about tempering yet so it must be very brittle!
@@joescopo8933 I forgot to say - I love what you did there - using a nice hard steel, somehow forge-welding it into one piece, and using it to fashion a replica of a low-status RR knife; tres elegant, messieur.

You'll save a lot of money on belts if you'd use a rock wheel on an angle grinder to clean that scale off. It's insanely hard and will chew through belts like crazy.

@@envsurf Good question! The fastest i’ve ever forged one was 11 minutes, but that was putting in 100% effort. I’d say it typically takes between 20-30 minutes to forge and then probably another 30 minutes for grinding and finishing. So overall you could take a cold railroad spike and within an hour and 30 minutes have a finished knife.
You should Twist the Handle it'll complement the overall look! 🔥 there was a Blk Smith setup at our State fare and the kid in the booth had twisted railroad spike Knives for sale, they sold out super quickly too.

It’s just the natural shape the knives take when forging them. It would be easily fixed with some hits to the spine, it’s all up to how you like your knives. I also think it would be interesting to see one with a straight back. Thanks for watching!

Me: I wonder if I can do this w/ a little propane torch and a roofing hammer¿? 🔨🤔 *2 hours later* No, it doesn't work and now I have an empty torch and a hot railroad spike I don't trust anymore.... ♨️👋😮 😂
Oh no! What did you use to forge on? that can sometimes make a difference, or if you had your torch out in the open or in closed to keep in the heat in. Sorry you had a bad experience! With just a couple more tools you could definitely get it to work and have bunches of fun!
@@NolansKnives - No I was just joking.... I know that wouldn't work, or it might work but it would take 4 little propane tanks and a LOT of hammering w/ such a lightweight hammer. @@xpndblhero5170 Probably the cheapest yet best working anvil you could get would be the 55lb cast iron anvil from harbor freight. It’s definitely not the best but I used it for 2 years and just recently upgraded, so it 100% will get the job done! But as far as torches go it will definitely be hard to get your metal super hot with them. I think your best option would be to get a low budget forge or induction heater like you said. @MorgottofLeyendell The twist is just a tradition for railroad spike knives. Also makes it easier to grip since there's no wood on the handle.

Nice! I've made a few myself. The steel, however, is impossible to harden due to the low carbon content. Great for decoration or novelties.
