Mixing concrete by hand in a wheelbarrow the easy way

  • I thought I would make a short video on a fairly easy way to mix concrete by hand in a wheelbarrow. Sometimes if you only need a small amount of concrete and you don’t have the use of a concrete mixer mixing it in a wheelbarrow can be the best option.
I have seen many people spending ages mixing up the sand/chippings and cement together then adding water and spending yet more time that this may be of interest.
I first of all put half of the sand and gravel in the front half of the wheelbarrow, then half the cement followed by the other half of the sand and gravel and the rest of the cement.
The key to this is to make sure it is all in the front of the wheelbarrow.
Pour in about half a bucket of water and work the sand, gravel and cement back into it making sure you get down to the bottom of the wheelbarrow. move the mixed concrete to the front add the rest of the water and repeat the process.
Then it is just a question of working it over for a couple of minutes making sure there is no unmixed material at the bottom.
How to Mix Concrete by Hand. How to Mix Concrete.

I've always mixed using a barrow for small jobs. Then I started buying concrete molds to construct a Roman garden and decided to invest in a mixer. Well I used it two or three times then went back to the barrow because I wasn't that impressed. What's more, it made a noise like a WW1 tank with half it's track missing. So I'm back to plugging away with my wheel barrow and loving it...and that method you used is fine...

Good technique. One of the first things I learned about concrete was to always add the dry to the water, never the water to the dry - and this method makes that possible in a very easy way. I don't mix much of it, but sometimes I need to set a post or something and make up a tiny batch. I have to buy those teensy sacks that hold about a half gallon of dry cement. It's expensive that way but I can't lift the others LOL :-) Tina

Nice one mate! I was taught the same method when I was a kid (From an English Bricklayer). Definitely the easiest way to mix concrete, mortar and render. We have light all steel mixing shovels here in OZ that are a bit straighter that yours. I find the angle to be good for mixing in a wheel barrow. Actually, the two biggest wheel barrow makers here in Australia make their tubs with sharp internal corners so the shovel can get right in there.

I put the sand or sand and gravel mix into a wheelbarrow, make a well in the middle, add the cement and water, and mix thoroughly with my hands (thick gloves essential as cement is irritant). Result - in two minutes I have a uniform mix that sets perfectly. (Though I would use a smaller quantity than shown here.)

Nothing disrespectful in pointing out an easier way to mix concrete in a wheelbarrow to the man .What would be disrespectful is not pointing out an easier way to him and letting him struggle on using that shovel .a draw hoe or an American mortar hoe is a far better and easier tool to use to mix concrete or mortar in a wheelbarrow . Having said that if all you have to hand is a shovel his demonstration was excellent .

bric bybrick the disrespectful comments I referred too were from smart alecks talking down their noses to a man who didn't whine to his dad that it was too hard to do with a shovel. working beyond his years, and making it work. having said that,i suppose he may have paused and said , "oh,I never thought of that"

+gary schraa generally speaking if I'm doing a small job that requires only 2 to 3 barrows of mortar or concrete I leave my mixer at home, it's not worth my while even loading it up. When I'm hand mixing I bring a barrow , shovel, and my hoe .the hoe I have is a very old one that a friend of mine picked up at a flea market in America ,the blade is fairly wide . it has no holes in it.so if I happen to forget to load a shovel (which would not happen are they are always left in the van) I can both put material into and take it out of the barrow and into a bucket with the hoe which I would then use to fill small forms . I would also have bricklaying trowels with me in the event I had to fill small forms . Hope this helps

I do one bag of ballast (mixed sand and aggregate) to 5kg of cement (5 to 1). I put ballast in wheelbarrow. I have weighed/measured what 5kg of concrete is beforehand (up to a mark in a bucket). I have done the same with the exact amount of water I will need. I then mix the concrete into the water in a bucket, gradually, whisking like cooking. Then I just pour the liquified concrete mixture into the barrow and easily mix with a garden hoe. This way keeps energy expenditure to a a minimum, just shoving about easily and the bare minimum. Girlfriend does the concrete and water measuring, me mixing as she pours in the powder, and I mix in the barrow. A nice steady human pace and you can do loads.
