    Thank you so much for this. As a woman and a keen DIY person I often mix concrete the way my father did, but this is much easier so thank you. Don't know why anyone should leave negative comments when you are being so helpful.

    My dad and I did exactly this when I was a kid. We poured a walkway around one side of our house and then another with steps coming off the porch. This works people, I can still see the work my dad and I did 30 years ago on Google maps of our old house.

      So he's making it from scratch, as it were, as opposed to just mixing quikrete with water? Not sure how that's easier. The way my dad taught me, we use a pulaski, which is an axe-type tool with one blade horizontal which helps it cut through the concrete and mix it really well.

    I've always mixed using a barrow for small jobs. Then I started buying concrete molds to construct a Roman garden and decided to invest in a mixer. Well I used it two or three times then went back to the barrow because I wasn't that impressed. What's more, it made a noise like a WW1 tank with half it's track missing. So I'm back to plugging away with my wheel barrow and loving it...and that method you used is fine...

    Good technique. One of the first things I learned about concrete was to always add the dry to the water, never the water to the dry - and this method makes that possible in a very easy way. I don't mix much of it, but sometimes I need to set a post or something and make up a tiny batch. I have to buy those teensy sacks that hold about a half gallon of dry cement. It's expensive that way but I can't lift the others LOL :-) Tina

    Nice one mate! I was taught the same method when I was a kid (From an English Bricklayer). Definitely the easiest way to mix concrete, mortar and render. We have light all steel mixing shovels here in OZ that are a bit straighter that yours. I find the angle to be good for mixing in a wheel barrow. Actually, the two biggest wheel barrow makers here in Australia make their tubs with sharp internal corners so the shovel can get right in there.

    Mixing concrete by hand is bloody hard work. Use buckets to measure the materials for the mix, guess work will result in a poor mix and ultimately a poor finish. Weigh a full bucket of all in. Then reduce the amount in the bucket until you have half the wight in the bucket, then mark the inside of the bucket with a small hole. You can then use this bucket to measure the all in, cement and the water. BTW, your mix is slightly too wet and needs a little bit more cement.

    I use a mattock. Just keep working to the front of the barrow and back again. Works fine

    I just laid slabs for a shed base, my mix was two bags of sharp sand to half a bag of cement. Some stones.
    I mixed the first bag of sand with the cement like soup, proper wet, added the stones then added half the other sand then the last sand, a big full barra worth. Still a hard workout not gonna lie. A mixers no fun, proper work by hand. Cheers, I like this technique also.

    I do one bag of ballast (mixed sand and aggregate) to 5kg of cement (5 to 1). I put ballast in wheelbarrow. I have weighed/measured what 5kg of concrete is beforehand (up to a mark in a bucket). I have done the same with the exact amount of water I will need. I then mix the concrete into the water in a bucket, gradually, whisking like cooking. Then I just pour the liquified concrete mixture into the barrow and easily mix with a garden hoe. This way keeps energy expenditure to a a minimum, just shoving about easily and the bare minimum. Girlfriend does the concrete and water measuring, me mixing as she pours in the powder, and I mix in the barrow. A nice steady human pace and you can do loads.

    thank you Mr. Collinson , it was like watching my dad mixing up bags of concrete . he passed in 93' so this was cool . now to all the jackasses puttin' their two cents in on the 'other' six and one half dozen ways of doing this . do you have any clue on what respect is ??? or appreciation ?? jeezus ! learn that "one" before adding your "two"

      Nothing disrespectful in pointing out an easier way to mix concrete in a wheelbarrow to the man .What would be disrespectful is not pointing out an easier way to him and letting him struggle on using that shovel .a draw hoe or an American mortar hoe is a far better and easier tool to use to mix concrete or mortar in a wheelbarrow . Having said that if all you have to hand is a shovel his demonstration was excellent .

    • @garyschraa7947
      @garyschraa7947 8 лет назад

      bric bybrick the disrespectful comments I referred too were from smart alecks talking down their noses to a man who didn't whine to his dad that it was too hard to do with a shovel. working beyond his years,and making it work. having said that,i suppose he may have paused and said , "oh,I never thought of that"

      +gary schraa generally speaking if I'm doing a small job that requires only 2 to 3 barrows of mortar or concrete I leave my mixer at home, it's not worth my while even loading it up. When I'm hand mixing I bring a barrow , shovel, and my hoe .the hoe I have is a very old one that a friend of mine picked up at a flea market in America ,the blade is fairly wide . it has no holes in it.so if I happen to forget to load a shovel (which would not happen are they are always left in the van) I can both put material into and take it out of the barrow and into a bucket with the hoe which I would then use to fill small forms . I would also have bricklaying trowels with me in the event I had to fill small forms . Hope this helps

      I work for a basement company. I mix pallets at a time all by hand. Lemme tell you that their is a huge difference between aggregated cement and just add water quikrete. This is simple because the rock helps break the sand up. All sand cement is a pain in the ass and I promise their is no easy way to hand mix.

    RE: 03:50 About to mix my first batch of concrete in some time as a DIYer. Concrete looked a bit soupy at the handle end as the video finished. Is that fairly normal / acceptable or should it ideally be given a few more turns until the consistency is uniform throughout the batch?

      @oldtimer43  2 года назад +2

    Ye but you only have a half barrow mix. To mix full Barrow make half mix chuck in water to make a soup then add sand and mix/turn until get proper consistency a lot easier and quicker plus you get full mixes
