  • Few cars have impressed me with their comfort in the same way the BMW 6 Series GT has. I got to drive it when it was launched and now I've driven it again in LCI guise and it's just as plush as I remember it. My tester for this video was a very well specced 640d xDrive with the M Pack, but that did not detract from its capacity to cross continents.

    I know this is a late comment, but I had a new 2018 G32 (640i xDrive) before they were discontinued in the US. I put over 65,000 miles on it before selling it, much of it urban highway commuting and many, many road trips across the US. Gran Turismo perfectly describes this car. It was the absolutely BEST car for putting in long distances. I could easily drive 800 miles in a day with little fatigue and still be comfortable in the seat. In addition to the excellent seats, I think much of the comfort came from the long wheelbase. The utility of the hatch cannot be understated; it was amazing what I could carry. My 6'3" son-in-law could easily be comfortable in the back seat. On the highway, I would enjoy nearly 30MPG, yet I could launch it from 0 and 60MPH would arrive in under 5 seconds. The B58 engine was reliable and without any issues; just requiring regular maintenance. Sadly, life circumstances required a more practical vehicle. I couldn't afford two cars, so I had to trade it for a pickup truck. But I long for the day when I can enjoy another GT car like this one again.

      You really seem to have loved that car and I totally understand why. I’ve always loved going on roadtrips in these cars - I think it’s an even better mile-muncher than a 7 Series or any of BMW’s SUVs.

Never have I ever found a fellow romanian as equally obsessed with speaking actually good english as I am, rivaling the vocabulary and capacity to convey meaning of a native speaker. Praise deserved for not only taking what you do seriously and doing it extremely well, but also serving as public contradiction to the default image of the dimwitted/lazy/ignorant/disgracious romanian.

      BRAVO, BRAVO, BRAVO!!!
      YOU ARE ONE OF THE FEW REVIEWERS WHO UNDERSTAND WHAT THIS CAR IS ABOUT!!
      It's about comfort. It's about joy of driving.
      There was one stupid woman who reviewed this car - Top Car or something - where she said that "it is less of GT and more of a Grand Tourer"...
      I owned the 530d GT, which was fantastic. Now, I own the pre face-lift 630d GT with xDrive and £15k of a bunch of cool extras - including the remote parking and rear steering, as well as the lush luxury seats.
      It is a magnificent car, it is very underrated. If more poeple like YOU who understand the model reviewed it, it might have done better. But then, only free thinkers would go for this, so it's not for the mindless masses. In rural Wales where I live, you don't see any of this.
      In the end, I love my car. 0-60 in 6 seconds. It is roomier and larger than my Toyota Prado. It is an impossible car to beat. I just regret that this car is no longer sold. It is so wonderful.

      @@ElenarMT Thanks, loved your comment and I couldn’t agree more. Congrats for owning one of these, they are one of a kind on the market today, I think and I am pretty sure this won’t get a new generation at the end of the G32’s life, which is a shame. I’m really looking forward to being able to afford one of these used in a few years’ time. I’d pick it over any SUV and even BMW’s own 7 Series.

      I own now the pre LCI with 2 liters petrol or so called 630i it is surprisingly quite economic in vicinity of 100-120 km/h which is a speed you could drive averagely in Thailand and the consumption is about 16 km per liter with comfort mode. • @GMoore-zl5dy
    @GMoore-zl5dy Год назад +2

    I have a 2019 version with the petrol engine. I came from a 5 Series Touring and it took me quite a while to adjust to the 640 GT. It is a great car, but I anticipated a degree of the sportiness that is found in the 5 Series….which it does not have. It has a lovely engine, great suspension, pulls like a beast, and excels at high speed highway driving. Where it suffers is handling/turning at speed. Between the long wheelbase, high center of gravity, and muted suspension and steering feedback it is a straight-line cruiser…and cruise it does- Like nothing I’ve ever driven before.
    After about a year I let go of my yearning for the handling of a 5 Touring, accepted that I had to change my driving style from frisky to measured and I have not looked back. I still miss what the 5 Touring offered, but I can now appreciate what the 6GT offers and have come to respect its’ positives instead of wanting it to be something it is not. I recently took a 1600 mile road trip, and the G32 could run with anything on the road. In fact, at times I found myself running at speeds between 95 and 100 mph with groups of other cars for extended stretches (several were other high-end beemers and Mercedes), and the GT was dominant in certain ways. It can’t turn with true sports cars, but it can run straight with anything, and do it under control and smoothly.
    As I was hovering near 3-digit speeds there was plenty of pedal left, the engine was not working hard at all, it was quiet, and the car was hunkered down and smooth. It felt like doing 80 mph in other cars. I no longer have the nerve, reflexes, or cat eye vision needed to take cars over 100 for much more than a few miles on traffic free highways, but based on what I experienced at the speeds I drove it I can’t imagine any issues until it is well over 120 mph (as long as the road is straight). The car was not stressed at all on the run-up to 3 digit speeds.
    On the negative side, when the long wheelbase gets out of alignment getting it re-aligned is a choppy process and you feel the high center of gravity. The long wheelbase also impacts turning radius…most notably when parking. It does well in the city, but it is then when I notice the size. I commute in it and it does not disappoint, but in city traffic (DC Metro) you can never forget that you’re in a big car. Additionally, spirited driving in moderate to dense traffic is its’ Achilles Heel. That is not what it does best, so I have learned slow down and enjoy the ride in those circumstances. No more racing from red light to red light and jumping from lane to lane as I could do in my 5 Touring when so inclined. Now, I have accepted that I just need to chill and let the GT do what it does well, which is impressive nevertheless.

    • @OneTireFire
      @OneTireFire  Год назад +1

      Thank you for watching and taking the time to write such an in-depth analisys! Based on my own experience with the car, I couldn’t agree with you more. It’s definitely a cruiser and when pushing hard into a corner, it seems to want to undesteer more than any other large BMW. In fact, it is less sporty feeling to drive than an X5, even though that has an even higher center of gravity.
      BMW wanted to make a relaxing car that doesn’t make you want to push hard and that’s exactly what resulted.
      I actually think this gives you a bit of a Rolls Royce feeling for a lot less, with the strong emphasis on comfort and no real sporting pretentions, the slightly taller driving position and the plush interior that is much more luxo barge than corner-carving Bimmer.
      It’s a great vehicle for the right person, although being a driving enthusiast I can also relate to your point about missing the 5 Touring, which is far sportier and more enjoyable on a twisty road. In the 6GT, you kind of just want to leave it Comfort mode (or maybe Adaptive if you’re feeling a little frisky) and just glide around the bends, not test the limits of grip.

      @@OneTireFire yes. I got 2 weeks ago the 630i (in Germany) and 258CP are quite OK for this car (the 630i in Coreea is available also with xDrive). I do not have the air suspension on the front (only on the rear), but the comfort with the normal suspension is still good (front suspension is coming from the 7-series), with run flat tyres also. The integral steering would have been nice because in the city you feel sometimes those 5 meters, especially in the underground parkings. The model tested by you is fully spec'd, yes.
