I think the lightly used rig is the best! The seller will often include all those things you have to go purchase if you buy new, like locks, chocks, hoses, maybe solar and more. David, I'm gonna use your "Pump the brakes!" quote. Or not...

Great Tips! Another one to consider is making a relationship with the dealership of your choice. Of course, we are biased but it is important to make a friend with the salesmen, get to know the culture of the place you're buying from, and check if they have a service department, that's always a plus!

Don't be afraid to consider a used RV. We bought one new, used it twice, realized this was not for us (to me more trouble than it was worth ) and sold it to PPL in Houston,TX and took a small loss. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the trailer, I simply changed my mind. Just food for thought.

The mistake we made on our first RV was buying with the thought that people were wanting to go with us. We figured my nephews would be camping with us all the time, so we bought a bigger RV with bunks and plenty of amenities. Turns out they had no interest in camping. So we were hauling this huge RV with only my wife and I and our dogs. We now downsized to a smaller unit and couldn’t be happier! Fits us perfectly!

It's very easy to be overwhelmed by all the different brands, models available. So take pictures
and notes and do thorough inspections, reviews before deciding. We also found a better deal on the exact model we wanted and saved about $1000.

I shopped for 4 months and then finally decided on the model I wanted. Saved $6k by driving 4hrs and towing it back.
Cost $300 in hotel, food, and gas. Was a nice weekend trip 😉
Mine was a new 2020 and got it for just $2k more than any of the used ones.
Used isn’t always the best deal due to model upgrades over the years.
For me, this floor plan was only available for 3yrs

Always start out at a MSRP less 40% then inch very slowly up if you have to. I just priced with two different salesmen a new 2021 1/2 Grand Design Imagine XLS. I shot my 40% off MSRP off the lot and the first one agreed right off. The 2nd salesman came back at 35% but two days later came back at my original offer.
ALSO: with the huge RV sales this past year in a year or two there will be a boatload of like new seldom used RV's for sale. The market will probably be saturated with them bringing used prices down. I would expect to pay about 50-55% off the original MSRP. Check out RV Trader to see what the market is doing and beware of "add on" fees. Forget extended warranty's, paint and fabric protection etc, etc

If you are financing a RV, banks typically have better rates on new RV’s versus old ones. RV’s over 10 years old are typically not able to be financed by a traditional bank.
If financing, work with your bank first to have financing in place. Typically can get a better rate then what the dealerships can offer. Dealerships will also try to do better then your bank. Don’t go shopping without knowing how you will pay for it.

I think my parents wanted an Airstream when I was a kid in the 1970s. But they were and are expensive. We actually got by with a light duty 73 Ford pickup and basic slide-in camper for several years, until we got a larger truck and 20' gooseneck.

Floorplans in a truck camper are limited until slides come into play. We bought for the fiberglass shell, guaranteeing no dryrot/ laminate issues.

I bought used, 600 miles away, so I paid a NRVIA certified inspector to go over the rig with a fine toothed comb. The information in the inspection report saved us more than the cost of the inspection. Plus several issues were highlighted and repaired that I’m sure I would have missed. We saved about 40% over the cost of the same rig new, it was 2 years old, but rarely used. I made the mistake of the tow vehicle as well. Traded it in with 8,000 miles and took a beating. (I needed the 1 ton diesel dually!!!).

When we first started looking we went from class A to a class C and now down to a pull trailer maybe a fifth wheel...but getting it dialed down. We have about four years to go and intend to do this as early retirement. My wife gets bored with the details but I'd rather be prepared at purchase time and know more than less. Thanks again for your great video we appreciate it.

Thanks guys! Late last fall/early winter we found a 2021 Keystone Springdale 202rd that we planned to purchase from a local dealer for $21plus k. We put our house on the market. When we received an offer on our house we asked the dealer if they'd hold the trailer. They would for a large non-refundable deposit (can't blame them). We decided to "put on the breaks" and keep looking. Guess what we found?!! A 2018 Keystone Springdale 202rd with all the extras we would have had to add for about $10k less! Our house sale closed Friday and we're picking up the trailer tomorrow. Thanks for all your insight. Be well!

Good points. I would add if you already have a truck check out the towing information on the label of the door to verify what you can tow. Plus, if you have a truck that already has a tow package check the data sticker on that as well. That way you know for sure what you can and cannot tow legally and safely. Also, in my case I am buying from a dealership (good reputation - not Camping World) and my new unit has been delayed. I even contacted the manufacturer and they responded immediately and gave me the true details about when I could expect it. During that time my local dealership got the unit my family wants and because I was upfront with the sales guy (on both teams) I was able to get the first dealer to drop $1K off of the price and unfortunately the local dealership could on come down. So I'm saving $2500 by driving 3 hours to the original dealership. The plus side, is that I still maintained a good relationship with the local dealership by being honest and upfront. And to be honest the other dealership is still making profit off of the sale. Now lets hope everything else works out well in about a week when the unit arrives.

I would add read online reviews regarding the various manufacturers. Recently, we considered upgrading to a Winnebago HIKE but were shocked by the negative reviews towards Winnebago in general. I think all RV manufacturers are taking a hit now as they are struggling to meet demand so workmanship/material/etc., might be taking a hit. We made a list of things we wanted in our trailer and the list included length, weight, bathroom type (dry or wet), solar, etc. Once we had the list we then did a pretty extensive internet search to narrow the field. Once we had five brands/models we started reading the reviews. We also read as much about the trailers as we could and in many visits to RV dealerships, we were more knowledgeable than the sales rep. Regarding tow vehicle - read and understand exactly what your vehicle or the one you plan to buy can tow. Does it come with a factory tow package (you want that). Other factors that need to be considered is allowed tongue weight, weight of the TV itself (that does factor in). Don't rely on the RV dealership to tell you whether or not your TV capable of pulling the RV.

Hello I'm glad your making new videos.. it is those PanHandlers is really hurting walmart, truck stops, cracker barrel, an alot more , plus those weekend campers, or the full timers doesn't take there garbage with them. Those are the ones that is ruining it for the rest of the true boondocks. It not the pandemic making those places to stop . It is apart the unclean an panhandlers ..

We are in the "just looking" phase with a class C in mind. The problem we have is that we are in a motorhome dead zone. There are only two dealers within 2 hours and right now they have no inventory. Any other dealers are too far away for us to casually shop. If we wanted a trailer we could find them within a few minutes.
It is quite frustrating but eventually we'll find our RV.

I have been searching for a yr now. I have noticed while looking online. The prices vary significantly depending on part of the country. CA has the highest prices compared to TX. So I have been looking at all the small dealerships to see if I can get what want from then. Also, I am looking for older models as well to save more. Amazing at how many I found that have less than 20,000 miles on them. Good points.

  • @toooldforgaming

Points list because you didn't put in titles:
1: Falling in love with first RV you see
2: You don't need to buy new
3: Letting salesman pressure you into a sale
4: Not fully inspecting an RV before buying
5: Don't buy an RV you want soon as you find it, shop around other dealers that have the same floor plan
6: Not checking out enough styles of RV's for what you truly need
7: Buying your tow vehicle before buying your RV trailer
8: Don't buy an RV just before you travel, plan your RV purchase well before your expedition

  • @gregcarey5944
    @gregcarey5944 3 года назад

RVs have been in demand since last year and dealers selling over msrp and having no inventory as most get sold before dealer receives. Even used is going for more than normal asking price. But alot of people bought RVs last year because of pandemic, give it a year and the market will be saturated with used RVs because most realized it's not for them. That will be a great time to buy used.

Thanks for all your info you provide and I respect your opinion. This will be my first camper purchase and I am debating on a bunkhouse slide model vs non slide bunkhouse. I see the benefits of both but my wife really likes the extra space the slide provides. I worry about the maintenance and longevity of a slide. If you where to purchase again, with all that you know now, would you get a slide or stick with the non slide. Thanks again and look forward to your answer.

  • @t.l.b.7131

I think unless you are going full time, it’s a mistake to finance an RV. If you can’t buy it in full, you can’t afford it, and I would only buy used. Also, I would not own an RV unless I had a place to park it on my property, paying for storage is ridiculous. If you can’t pay in full and store it yourself you should rent until you can. Too many people are carrying too much debt. Whatever happened to saving for things? I own everything I have, including my home, the RV and the parking space. I’m not “fortunate”, I worked for it, and waited until I could afford what I wanted.
