    It's a DPF Regen. As eveyone else has said. If it's not, Then the car will also do this until it's warmed up when it's cold out. it also wont go away if you keep interupting it. And if you eventually you'll have to change out the filter in your DPF if you keep interupting it and that's not fun.

    This is not a problem with the car. It is performing the DPF regeneration. This is perfectly normal!!!

    • @johncatty6560
      @johncatty6560 5 лет назад +4

      How does the running cooling fan after engine shutdown affect the DPF regeneration? Sometimes the fan on my 2.0 TDI engine is also running when I stopped after a short trip during the cold time of the year. I have no logical explanation for it. Even after longer trips in summer time it was not running for that long after I shut down the engine.

    • @ricardobarrios4159
      @ricardobarrios4159 5 лет назад +6

      @@johncatty6560 The cooling fan spins because DPF regen creates a lot of heat in the exhaust for the process to occur, and if you turn it off it will keep going because:
      -the exhaust is very hot and the air helps it to cool down;
      -there's an auxiliary pump that pumps water through the EGR and the head and block of the engine to help it cool down during/after this process;
      I know this because I spent alot of time researching this as my car does this from time to time. On the first DPF models it's normal, now the cars are equiped with an exhaust treatment liquid (SCR/AdBlue).
      Don't worry, it's a normal process.

      @johncatty6560 5 лет назад

      @@ricardobarrios4159
      I appreciate your reply. But you did not address the issue I mentioned. I wrote that the fan keeps spinning after a short trip in cold times. To be precisely: recently I drove 3kms (approx 2 miles) in an ambient temperature of -2°C (30F). The engine and the exhaust system had no chance to heat up. Last summer I drove 25kms (15 miles) in an ambient temperature of 32°C (90F). The fan was not spinning at all after the engine stopped although the oil temperature was around 85°C (185F).
      Again: the fan is running at high rpm after a short trip in cold times but it does not run after the engine reached perfect operating temperature in hotter conditions.

      @@johncatty6560 I have the same problem with my car vw passat b7 2.0 tdi 177hp. The fan keeps spining for 2-5 min after I have made 1 or 2km in 15°C. In other words the engine its still cold. So why does rhe fan keeps spining? Is it related with the dpf? Any idea whot should I do?

    • @johncatty6560
      @johncatty6560 Год назад

      @@vini8825 Yes, after I posted my comment here (4 years ago) I learnt more about this topic. I was able to "suppress" the regeneration of the DPF by changing gears manually (my VW has a DSG gearbox) on short trips. Since then I did not face this issue anymore. However, I know that the process is required. Hence, I don't postpone it for too long.

    DPF regeneration.. The DPF needs to regenerate every so often and dose so IF the take is over 20% full, over a set speed limit (about 50 I think), and the engine is over 2000 RPM. The DPF is around $2700 to replace and will eventually go out over time (~100k) Best way to keep it longer is to let the car do its thing...

    The Germans use a lot of bolts for one time applications, what us Diy"ers don't know is that when we put the parts n pieces back together that the bolts threads for example will have elongated, they use a lot of alloy bolts these days and like all other manufacturers they don't like us trying to save a buck here and there! I learnt this the hard way, is it fixed yet? Let me know as it made a familiar noise like mine did!

      Actually I figured out. They call it hidden DPF regeneration, meaning dashboard light is not on, and you can switch off the car in the process. However, if not completed very soon you will get the DPF cleaning light, and have to drive it on higher RPM's until finished.
      What I do is I warm up the oil temperature to above 94 degrees C, and after that computer is satisfied, and lowers the RPM's to normal 800 or so. When I started implementing this model, I never got DPF cleaning warning light.
      So bad that VW did not explained this, but could be related to dieselgate or something.
