    Faaaaantastic video. One of the best things for me was to ditch Spotify when I first started reading about him a few years ago. Plus switching to Apple Music was the best decision.
    Great job Nate.

    You mentioned the Nuclear Blast sound and everything sounding similar. I wonder sometimes if this will become popular/nostalgic one day, like the Morrisound sound or something that certain folks in the 90s couldn't stand either.

    • @BornTooNate
      @BornTooNate  15 дней назад +2

      The sound I’m talking about has already been around for about 20 years and sounds lamer than ever so probably not. I would compare the 90s morrisound production to the practical effects in The Thing… it will ALWAYS look/sound awesome because it’s real. Real visual effects, real sounds. This modern metal sound I would compare to cheap/quick CGI from the mid 2000s. One year later you rewatch it and can’t believe how bad it is.

    I listened while driving to and from the dentist in Bastrop so couldn't respond right away, but thanks for humoring me and offering your own take on psych noir faves. I made that term up a few years back, so there's no wrong answer, it's however you want to interpret it. Your picks are awesome -- I know and love all those albums. Was chuffed to see Witch at Austin Psych Fest this spring, with J. Mascis surprisingly able to do drum duties in between his solo dates. Hallas was a highlight at last year's Hell's Heroes. I've seen Windhand a few times with their early tours, like taking a doom low-end soundbath. I saw Wand in 2015 and Cory Hanson could really shred.
    A recap of my own list, just based on my own subjective experiences and preferences:
    1. Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats - Blood Lust (2011)
    2. Large Plants - The Thorn (2023)
    3. Rosalie Cunningham - Rosalie Cunningham (2019)
    4. Purson - Desire's Magic Theatre (2016)
    5. Blood Ceremony - The Old Ways Remain (2023)
    6. Molassess - Through The Hollow (2020)
    7. Lola Colt - Twist Through The Fire (2016)
    8. Jess and the Ancient Ones - Jess and the Ancient Ones (2012)
    9. Roky Erickson And The Aliens - The Evil One (1981)
    10. The Sea Kings - Woke In The Devil's Arms (2014)
    12. Jex Thoth - Blood Moon Rise (2013)
    13. The Devil's Blood - The Thousandfold Epicentre (2011)
    Bubblin' under: Lucifer, Mansion, Lucid Sins, Jack Harlon & The Dead Crows, Messa, Vitskär Süden, Serpent Venom, The Black Angels, Blood Farmers, Rosegarden Funeral Party, The Oath, The Exploding Eyes Orchestra, Lord Buffalo, The Janitors, Avatarium, Dead Skeletons.

    Dude! Deja vu. When this thumbnail and description popped up in my RUclips list, I was like, "I thought I'd already seen and watched this."
    Haven't had Deja vu since I don't know when. The craziest time was when I was pretty young at a Super Bowl party at my friend's dad's buddy's house. In the backyard with a hammock in it. I felt the moment coming together, and told my buddies that this, this, and that was going to happen, and then right in front of us it did! We were like, "Woa!", but we were kids. Went on about our business, enjoying our under-age beers, and lots of snacks.
    Anyway, Deja vu's a trip, man! You want to dwell on it, but what are you actually gonna do?

    ya man, i'm torn, spotify is just a software to me. one that enriches my life through ease of access to music i love. it sucks that a shithead owns the product, but then there's like... home depot, right? hells headbangers too i guess? and we also know a bunch of shithead kids that through passion, went on to create music we love, then banged teenagers or slapped lita ford around. and perhaps i mistakenly rationalize the situation, since in my estimation spotify hurts labels more than artists. being an artist has always been a lottery, but with more extreme music the lottery aspect kind of goes out the window and being a touring act becomes a necessity. vinny appice was just out there in the news dogging spotify saying at least the radio pays artists. yeah well the radio model is broken - it sucks and has sucked for 30 years, for fans AND new artists and labels didn't do shit. it's for that reason I turned to pirating music, which made me a fan and a collector and a concert-goer. i mean, i don't know, sorry for the rant, but you're an artist - what odds are better and what would you prefer, that you'll get a song on the radio or that a million streams gets you a ten date tour filling each 1500 capacity club?

    • @BornTooNate
      @BornTooNate  18 дней назад +4

      Imagine if the CEO of Home Depot declared that the cost of creating content was close to zero, so he required employees to work for no money (just do it cuz you love it!)… and required brands to stock his stores for free (free exposure!) Also, I’ve had songs on the radio and songs with over 1 million streams, unfortunately neither equates to filling 1500 cap rooms or even securing a tour that covers its own expenses. Believe it or not, Sirius XM pays GREAT, and it’s run by actual human beings and not algorithms. I could do an entire years worth of podcasts about this, but the big takeaway is that Spotify and other streaming services have made it acceptable to live in a world where soon human beings will no longer be capable of making music in any halfway serious/professional manner.

    • @uuuutopoia
      @uuuutopoia 18 дней назад

      @@BornTooNate thanks, i appreciate the reply and insight. i never really thought of the artists as the employees, and as a software developer that's my bias. you did bring up an interesting question in the video about 'when is enough enough' and karl marx/engels explored that, noticing historically when the class divide gets too big, the people start going for heads. however, i had a sociology professor that highlighted that the rich introduce mechanisms to prevent the uprising. healthcare was a good example, something that marx couldn't have predicted. i mean, here i am a victim of it - the rich has made the service of exploring music so easy for me, that despite knowing better, i'm willing to support fuckwits whose goal is to maximize disenfranchisement.

    • @BornTooNate
      @BornTooNate  18 дней назад +5

      Right on… I will say I am an unapologetic capitalist. But there are people who would burn down the planet (literally) to advance their own financial interests under unchecked capitalism. They’re doing it right now.

    • @uuuutopoia
      @uuuutopoia 18 дней назад +1

      @@BornTooNate yeah capitalism is fine. i know marx is a loaded word. in terms of validity, don't get me wrong the implementation is a mess (communism) but considering marxism as merely an analysis of human culture across civilizations... that was a paradigm shift. it was nuts being 19 in that sociology class and the professor just giddy, repeating "marx wasn't right... YET." and you start seeing that society is a like jenga in reverse, with each block a social contract, and the rich are picking and choosing the cheapest ones to keep us happy. and you start thinking, hoping, one wrong move you fucks, come on!
