I'll say this: I have a BFA in Graphic Design from a school in California and it was worth every penny. The reality of design is that most people fail. The first time I ever hallucinated wasn't due to psychedelics, it was for staying up for 3 days working on my portfolio so that I could pass into the next semester. My point it, design school, school in general really boils down to you own effort. Am I saying do what I did? No. However you do have to grind a lot in design. Graphic/Visual Design requires a lot of burning passion and many fail. But if you are successful, it's one of the best careers ever. Design isn't just graphic design, there are many more subfields and finding the right one takes time. If you can afford a design degree from a reputable public university, that will get you just as far as any degree from RISD, Pratt, CMU, etc…
Back in 2020, I took admission in Media Science degree with focus on Advertising. After spending whole semester I realised, the creative stuff like graphic design, animation, visual effects, video editing can be learned at home, it all seems useless to me even though the coursework was so good. I changed my major to Business Administration with major in Marketing. The things I'm learning in this degree can't be learn outside university plus everyone requires degree in it, and also i'm self-practicing Branding/Design using Canva.
What a beautiful video. In 2024 I did actually start graphic & design for my next career to get certificate or maybe an associate degree. My first career wasn't great that I thought would be. I did get a certificate anyway. But it time for me to move on and I am going back to Community college again. I went there since 2018. It felt werid to me.
Well it is very interesting, I am in the process of my last year of a graphic design school, and Im struggling to know if it was worth it, if I should continue towards a master, or stop and find a job in design... Im so lost, but props to you for chasing your path, I've struggle myself to get to a similar position. Thanks a lot for this point of view on the many questions we can have about these kinds of jobs 🙏.
I’ve had the same thoughts as you. I wondered if I should continue to university, or get work experience for minimum pay. I’m still figuring things out and I’m sure you will too! Thanks for watching.
Wait is their history classes in graphic design colleges ?? Im thinking about choosing it as my career cz it sound kinda fun to do but i aint wanna study history
I totally agree. I have 23 years of graphic design experience. In that time I've had to chase my career. I wanted to get into CD designs. I started design school with T squares and triangles. Within 5 years it was strictly computers. I fell into a prepress job with quarkxpress and it was the hardest but fun job. Within 5 years of that the web took over. So I had to switch to web design going back to school and then learning flash. That died and I moved to html5 by that time templates and anyone on wix became a web designer. Same thing with this fiver crap and 5 dollar logos that India designers were doing. Oh in that time of transitions the mighty print company that had every big business as clients such as fender guitar to shamrock foods went under. So finally finding a nitch in t-shirt design was great until this chatgpt started creating designs a dime a dozen. Keeping up with Adobe and watching your chosen career die has been rough. Photography and video is great but again trying to claw your way into a new career is hard. But I've put my time in. Depending on who hires you it's usually an isolated room with Co workers that don't relate to you. But don't let my world distract you. If you have a sure bet to get hired go for it! But if you are in the bottom pile go for something else.

Nice to hear your experience, it really comes down to the work you put in outside of school. Thanks for watching!

@@dave_made Thanks and good luck to you, I hope you can find the answers you're lookin' for. 🤞
Please make playlist for graphic designer learning 🙏🙏
what do you think about graphic design engineering?
can I ask you some thing, Dave? is it wise to try to become a designer in 2024 as a beginner? I am new and scared of "AI"
Same question ❓
If you believe you can offer something that AI cannot, then there’s no need to worry.

Depends on your school, I had to learn history of design.
What community college did you go to?
The hell it is. This profession is dead AF
Can you explain a bit more?
