I'll say this: I have a BFA in Graphic Design from a school in California and it was worth every penny. The reality of design is that most people fail. The first time I ever hallucinated wasn't due to psychedelics, it was for staying up for 3 days working on my portfolio so that I could pass into the next semester. My point it, design school, school in general really boils down to you own effort. Am I saying do what I did? No. However you do have to grind a lot in design. Graphic/Visual Design requires a lot of burning passion and many fail. But if you are successful, it's one of the best careers ever. Design isn't just graphic design, there are many more subfields and finding the right one takes time. If you can afford a design degree from a reputable public university, that will get you just as far as any degree from RISD, Pratt, CMU, etc…
Its very rare unless fit into their standard of diversity enrollment which means your black or bative american super poor lived through a specfic type of systematic oppression and hardship. Btw you need proof and you can maintain a 4.0 gpa then yea sure. This is true facts Im in art school I know two ppl who got full scholarship rides and its been brutal on their mental health. The school will work you to death @Floressmm
What a beautiful video. In 2024 I did actually start graphic & design for my next career to get certificate or maybe an associate degree. My first career wasn't great that I thought would be. I did get a certificate anyway. But it time for me to move on and I am going back to Community college again. I went there since 2018. It felt werid to me.
you are an inspiration🥺✨ im struggling with the "learn at your own pace" courses online and can't afford to go to college. you give me hope and courage to power through and keep on trying💪
Back in 2020, I took admission in Media Science degree with focus on Advertising. After spending whole semester I realised, the creative stuff like graphic design, animation, visual effects, video editing can be learned at home, it all seems useless to me even though the coursework was so good. I changed my major to Business Administration with major in Marketing. The things I'm learning in this degree can't be learn outside university plus everyone requires degree in it, and also i'm self-practicing Branding/Design using Canva.
@@itsjust_keoni Yeahh but business degree is not to just learn how to do business, but it teach you management practices that's why degree is required if you want to work in a company's management. For entrepreneurship, degree is not needed.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I’m in my second year of a two-year transferable degree in Business Administration at a community college, and I’m planning to transfer to a university to complete my bachelor’s degree. I can really relate to your video; I still haven’t figured out what to pursue when I transfer. My original plan was to concentrate in Accounting, but I’m worried I won’t be happy and might get bored. I’m also considering majoring in Marketing or Advertising, but I’m not sure if universities will focus much on graphic design or in intensive learning all concepts that you mentioned: typography, branding, web design, motion graphic, web development, I have some experience in graphic design, but I don’t know how to use Adobe software, as I’ve only used PowerPoint for all my graphic designs. I know in my heart that if I major in Accounting, I’ll likely find a stable job, but I might not feel completely satisfied. However, if I choose design, I know I’d never get tired of it and would be happy, yet I’m afraid I won’t find a stable job and might end up disappointed.
I’m going trough school atm and don’t please don’t spend access Money for a graphic design degree, as harsh as it sounds someone could spend a ton money and not be as good as a student from community college it takes commitment and passion for creativity
Well it is very interesting, I am in the process of my last year of a graphic design school, and Im struggling to know if it was worth it, if I should continue towards a master, or stop and find a job in design... Im so lost, but props to you for chasing your path, I've struggle myself to get to a similar position. Thanks a lot for this point of view on the many questions we can have about these kinds of jobs 🙏.
I’ve had the same thoughts as you. I wondered if I should continue to university, or get work experience for minimum pay. I’m still figuring things out and I’m sure you will too! Thanks for watching.
I think it is depending on the school and quality of program. I went to a university in Nebraska for this degree and the entire time it felt like im wasting time. Yes they teach you principles and such but when it comes to projects? None of those projects reflect real life problem. Its all just almost like you create an art project rather than real advertising and stuff. And lets not talk about the business of design. They will not teach you that. Which is a very important subject because not everyone will able to land a full time job at some corporate or agency. School will not prepare you for that kind of situation
You I was doing BFA in animation thinking that it met include good infrastructure of Designing after talking to seniors I realise my college is not that good in the terms of designing and animation so that's why I dropout of college after 3 months I was thinking I am wasting money, so that's why I took admission in a normal BA where I didn't have to force myself for attendance can I can work on my own in making my own skills significant...
I have a good job without degrees I make 75k a years and I love it . But I want to go the college to study web design , I’m wondering when I’ll graduate if I will be able to keep my job and have other job as web designer ?
Can I know how you did get a Job as a graphic designer without degrees? I mean do have a good experience before , or just worked on a good portfolio to be hired. Thanks in advance
Hey, I am currently finishing up my "gap year" after graduating highschool in 2023, and Im really struggling on figuring out wether I want learn self taught or attend college or community college. Is the education worth it or should I keep learning online? And with your graphic design jobs, do most of them just ask for your portfolio?
Wait is their history classes in graphic design colleges ?? Im thinking about choosing it as my career cz it sound kinda fun to do but i aint wanna study history
Hey. I had to study world art history at my university because graphic design was only as a concentration, so my major was Art. Depends on school and if there is a major, minor, or concentration on graphic design at your school. God bless you🙌🏻
I totally agree. I have 23 years of graphic design experience. In that time I've had to chase my career. I wanted to get into CD designs. I started design school with T squares and triangles. Within 5 years it was strictly computers. I fell into a prepress job with quarkxpress and it was the hardest but fun job. Within 5 years of that the web took over. So I had to switch to web design going back to school and then learning flash. That died and I moved to html5 by that time templates and anyone on wix became a web designer. Same thing with this fiver crap and 5 dollar logos that India designers were doing. Oh in that time of transitions the mighty print company that had every big business as clients such as fender guitar to shamrock foods went under. So finally finding a nitch in t-shirt design was great until this chatgpt started creating designs a dime a dozen. Keeping up with Adobe and watching your chosen career die has been rough. Photography and video is great but again trying to claw your way into a new career is hard. But I've put my time in. Depending on who hires you it's usually an isolated room with Co workers that don't relate to you. But don't let my world distract you. If you have a sure bet to get hired go for it! But if you are in the bottom pile go for something else.
@@loveArtnotFood The question is, are advertisers paying, look at what advertisers are doing perhaps. Is there anybody hiring in this field due to demand, that's the thing. Check the market condition. In the US alone, tech layoffs are reaching levels not seen since 2008, and it's actually worse than 08. Then you have Ai, which albeit it's still kinda buggy, it's a matter of time before it gets better. I'm in the CG field, and it's been tough competing with low wage workers who would even work for free sometimes. Companies know this. Do your homework if you absolutely must get in this field. I'm personally looking to change careers if things don't improve in 2025.

Thank you for that now I just need to see what university to go to.
What what is BFA?

Go to college for graphic design but do NOT go to art school for it, it's insanely overpriced
Do you know if they offer a full-ride ride scholarship? And for them to pay your dorm too? If that’s possible

can I ask you some thing, Dave? is it wise to try to become a designer in 2024 as a beginner? I am new and scared of "AI"
Same question ❓
If you believe you can offer something that AI cannot, then there’s no need to worry.
