    one important thing about Hyperbeam, if you one shotted a pokemon, it had no cool down. Victreebell or Venusaur should have made it in over Rhydon. The only reason they wouldn't be overpowered is because of Mewtwo and Alakazam. Sleep Powder, wrap, leech seed and always critical razor leafs. Sleep status was broken in this game because waking up took a whole move, and if you were wrapped, it wouldn't even give you a chance to wake up. . Dugtrio was a great pokemon,. Having high speed made moves more accurate, which made fissures a pretty reliable move, as well as very fast Earthquakes and critical hit slashes. Nidoking was great too, very strong and versatile

  • @Showsni
    @Showsni 8 лет назад +23

    Starmie should definitely have made the list, as should Exeggutor. Jolteon and Dragonite are cute, but nothing like as good as those two. I don't think anyone would argue against Mewtwo, Mew, Slowbro, Tauros, Snorlax, Chansey or Alakazam, and Rhydon would certainly be on my personal list (though as you mention, Rhydon and Golem are pretty much interchangeable). Starmie is such a beast, though, with Recover, and Eggy's Psychic + Sleep Powder (with a last ditch Explosion) is hard to find fault with. And Gengar for the honourable mentions.
    Don't forget, gen 1 is all about Thunderwave. Paralysing your opponent's Starmie and Alakazam is a top priority; and some of the best paralysis spreaders are... Starmie and Alakazam. (And Chansey!) Eggy puts something to sleep and don't forget how OP sleep is in Gen 1!), then Psychics down the opponent with a surprise Explosion (ideally hitting your opponent's Chansey or Alakazam). And usually you'd switch your Rhydon or Golem in to tank Explosion, but Eggy makes that hard with Mega Drain. Starmie has great bolt/beam coverage, Recover and Thunder Wave; and when the ice moves all have a chance of being a OHKO...

    I remember Dragonite having impressive stats in Generation 1. Even though there were no effective Dragon moves and with it's horrible move set while leveling up, it did fairly well because of it's high attack. It's still one of those Pokemon I wish I could use effectively. Dugtrio was also overpowered for in game purposes. Just being able to catch and use one at level 31 before obtaining the 3rd badge and with it's high speed stat, scoring critical hits became unbelievably easy with it.

    I'd personally like to add Sandslash as an honorable mention. Primarily for the same reason as Persian; once it learns Slash, it's quite brutal, despite having lower base speed. It is certainly very weak to some elemental types, considering it's low special, but it is probably my favorite brawler in GEN 1. I almost always run one on my team. With Sandshrew evolving at level 22, it's quite easy to get this pokemon early game. For how much base attack and defense it has, it still has pretty good HP and speed. Not only is Slash great, but Dig, Rock Throw, and Earthquake can all have devastating effect, with the added bonus of Dig being a useful utility outside of battle. It has great match-ups against electric, rock, and poison pokemon. These types often were capable of doing lots of burst damage or applying crippling status effects. As a result, while certain elemental or normal types may have been able to do more damage to the target, or take the first move due to greater speed, they could end up receiving a lot of punishment and not having the stamina left to take out a powerful pokemon they were a specific counter to later in the fight. Sandslash is a great pokemon to keep on your team as a general tank with few weaknesses, which also has to ability to 1 hit many of the weaker pokemon. This allows you to save your more offense based, low defense/HP pokemon for later in the fight , and have them be clear of status effects, when the opponent brings out their specialized bruisers. I found Sandslash to be of great utility during both Victory Road and The Final Four, as he could take the hits for my more fragile pokemon, and still dish out a decent bit of damage on his own.

      +Sherwin Lewis because gen 1 gyarados is pretty bad. No physical stab even tho it had a great atk stat and its best move was hyper beam but it didnt get stab off it so it was worse than tauros and snorlax at using it by farrrrr. It has a wide special movepool but a horrendous special stat. There is no reason to use gyarados pretty much when lapras and starmie were far better water types in gen 1. Ofc this changed when the physical special split happened and gyarados finally got some stab water attacks but thats not for a while.

      Exeggutor is fairly bulky with a very high special stat and resistances to Ground and Psychic moves which constituted a large portion of the meta. It could wall opposing pokemon like Golem, Rhydon, Alakazm, Exeggutor, Snorlax, etc.
      Exeggutor was also a very solid status inflictor thanks to Sleep Powder, making it a good lead. With a 125 special stat for stab Psychic as well as the ability to use Explosion, Exeggutor was also pretty potent offensively.
      Meanwhile, Victreebel is just an overrated sweeper that is too slow to be of an use by itself. It has good attacking stats and access to Sleep Powder, but its slow and weak to Psychic, making it only very useful against Paralyzed pokemon. Something like Tauros is generally better as a late game sweeper.

      Yes, the thing is PSYCHIC is overpowered type in gen1. mewtwo, exeggutor, dragonite, arcanine, starmie. Yes starmie amazing moveset and speed and special attack, even with lower base stats as say lapras or gyarados, is still slightly better and can 1-2hit KO most other pokemon. ALL pokemon with low special stat (combined with low speed stat are dead before they can attack, say Rydo.. wat a joke) Besides the pokemon in the video have been given rare candies to level 100, that is why they are so low on stats (next to them not being caught for talent).

I've got a hitmonlee and while it's in the PC right now I def seem to remember it having the fighting moves and reflect. Reflect makes up for its awful defence stat and from then on its speed excels against rocks and normals, and well anything else that isn't flying or psychic or exceptionally strong. I'm talking in game of course, I'd never use it in competitive play. Ultimately I got bored of it though and stored it away but like most feeble Pokemon teaching it a few tactical moves/reflect makes a world of difference. One thing that you skip over in regards to Jolteon is the fact that it naturally learns Pin Missile, a Bug-type move, that is super effective against Psychic. And with its naturally high speed you can often get the upper hand against some of the highest tier Psychic-type Pokemon. I never met an Alakazam that I couldn't take with Jolteon.

  • @Zafire063
    @Zafire063 4 года назад +1

    Great list! I like Golem better than Rydon, but you're right that Rydon has more potential. Golem just feels more consistent because Explosion doesn't miss...Unless your opponent swaps to Gengar or 1/256 glitch.
    Jolteon is my favorite Pokemon in the game by far. It has so much type coverage and basically unmatched speed. Pin Missile is super effective against Grass and Psychics, and Double Kick is super effective against rock and normal types. Grass and Rock are both things Electric types struggle with, but Jolteon can still be respectable against them. Add in Thunder Wave and Thunder Bolt, and the only problem it has is that takes a lot of damage from physical attacks. I absolutely love Jolteon.
    Slowbro is one of the few Pokemon that can stall Mewtwo. If you teach it Blizzard it can even handle grass Pokemon with ease. I definitely like having one on my team :D

I enjoy the creative aspect of coming up with teams and learning the metagame and so on, though.
      I enjoy the casual approach too sometimes, it's just that the games themselves are so easy that I can't really imagine having difficulties (outside of certain infamous trainers/battles). Then again I guess a lot of RPGs are like that... apart from Megaten, lol.

      I was fairly good at link battles in school. I probably won around half or maybe a little more, so I'd say that was ok given we all kind of shared tactics anyway. One of my trump cards believe it or not (lol) was a mewtwo with the moveset psychic, blizzard, hyper beam and self-destruct. I never believed in strategy when I was a kid instead preferring to hit hard and hit fast, and most of the time it was ok. As soon as my mewtwo got weak I'd just explode it, and knock out another Pokemon. One time though I battled this quiet kid who had strategy down and managed to ruin me using a zapdos with flash and possibly a paralysing move. It was eye opening and I think I lost the battle hands down, which was unusual as my losses were usually close ones. I've grown up now and I much prefer strategy like buffing stats, poisoning, evasion etc. None of us ever used a Tauros in school, missed a trick there I suspect. A lot of the Pokemon I use could be considered weak, but I strongly believe in winning with your favourites and not some "dream team" if you don't play competitive. I have a butterfree, which is decidedly feeble, but then I taught it reflect and it creams anything that comes up against it now.

      Gyarados is crippled by a 4x weakness to electricity which means anything that can learn thunderbolt instantly counters it. Yes should at least be an honorable mention!
      Exeggutor and Nidoking/queen as well :(
      Pretty lazy research or just lack of experience if you ask me...

    I found Snorlax was still pretty good against the Gastly line
    In Gen 1 there weren't Abilities so Gengar,etc. didn't have Levitate which mean you could just exploit it's weakness to Ground types (they're part Poison) and just have Snorlax run Earthquake on them

      Yes, it got STAB from moves like Body Slam, Hyper Beam, and Self-Destruct
