If you think this is practical check out practicalkatabunkai by Sensei Iain Abernathy the UK’s number one kata bunkai expert and probably the best in the world.
The only thing, that makes this beautifull demonstration go far from reality, is the attacking opponent, who is standing still. After the delivering of the mighty punch he is freezing and patiently waiting for the defense technical action.
Very nice demo! The fighting range should be much closer as by my experience real attacks happen much closer. That said the bunkai will still work, you would have to shorten up your movements is all. Thanks for posting it is very informative.
I like this bunkai. I am just wondering: I our club, we are doing the first movements of this Kata slightly differently. (From both hands at the hip, we are doing a distinct gedan barai first, and that is counted as one step. It seems omitted here.) Has the Kata been changed? Our instructor is 7dan JKA.
NOw that it's two years later, what's your own answer to the above question? I am interested to hear, I have always done the kata as shown in this video.
The Code Father Our instructor says yes, the shihankai agreed to change it slightly, (They also made small modifications to other Kata). He is a member of the Japanese JKA steering committee, so as far as JKA goes, you can´t argue with him.
Oh, what does the extra gedan barai signify? So the rest of us who perform it without a gedan barai to start with, are we wrong or right or are we just practicing an outdated version of the kata? Thanks for the response btw.
This is one of the most practical and fluid bunkai u I've seen yet for the Kara Teki Shodan. Absolutely beautiful.

That was my thoughts exactly. A lot of the time he has his other hand free, ready to strike and does nothing with it.
Usssu! Nice breakdown of teki shodan. That fact for showing the actual application to this beautiful kata is amazing! Thumbs up for that.
É fundamental que o praticante do karatê saiba os fundamentos de defesa de cada kata praticado
