- Thanks again to the one and only Sting who shared his profound insights with me recently for The Doctone Project. Kenny Kirkland played with Sting for 11 years and it was their collaboration that got me into jazz and inspired so many others... #Sting #Kennykirkland #Doctone #jazz #film
This… “You take a risk, and you’re rewarded by your subsequent choices” - Sting on the essence of Jazz
I'm so happy you brought up Kenny Kirkland! I loved his playing.
i so love this man, Sting. He is wonderful, amazing and so multitalented. Other musicians have complimented him on his musical prowess and i love hearing his music. Thank u for this short but sweet facetime w/him. I had to tune in on youtube Jan 23, 2024 here in MN. USA & Happy New Year to u and yours, i subbed. Better late than never, i guess. A woman sub (new)
Mr. Sumner is still a teacher. Yes, his explanation makes perfect sense.
Kenny Kirkland inspired countless jazz pianists through his collaboration with Sting, and in particular the solo in Bring on the Night. There have always been piano solos in rock and pop, but NOTHING that sounded like that. To those who’d never been exposed to jazz, his approach was completely alien but incredible. He made piano actually cool, rather than corny or cliche and it opened the eyes of countless aspiring musicians who never knew the piano could do the things that Kenny made it do. He was a true genius on the instrument and his effect on those who followed can’t be overstated.
Wonderful.
I met Kenny a few times. He was incredibly humble. I think his work with Sting was great but I feel that Kenny's voice was best when playing Jazz.
I remember Kenny playing in the Prudential entrance hall, people walking in and out, his playing totally focused and intense, the sound clear and defined....truly a great player and a great human being...
Awesome Sting .... 🇿🇦

Well said maestro well said . Yes it make alot of sense.
I saw Sting and Kenny play on Sting's second solo album and Kenny's solos were on an other level. I've never been able to describe it but a lot of stuff almost sounded like a "mistake" and then suddenly wasn't. LOL So when Sting said that I was like HA! yeah.
'Brought to my Senses' one the tastiest jazz piano solos ever.
Sting...my idol.
KK's solo on the live version of 'Bring On The Night' is The One.
His solo in Shadows in the Rain maybe the only worthwhile solo that ever came out of a DX-7. He takes that ridiculous dinky fake electric piano sound and makes it smoke!
@@PutItAway101is that the solo others are talking about throughout this thread? Cus I love that one but wasn’t sure that was it, they don’t mention the song
sting ,,yeah ,,beautiful ,,,what you say about kenny ,,,i miss him every day ,,
Such a great segment from your film, Noah.
Thanks Andy :)
For a long time I've tried to get my head around the solo from Bring on the Night, which is maybe the best Piano Solo in pop music so far. Maybe they cut some takes together. If it is only one take, this Piano solo is from another world. No wrong notes. Everything makes perfect sense. Kenny Kirkland was a genius like Charlie Parker. Will you make a complete film out of this? I hope so.
Of course it's one take, come on man !!!
It was the solo of that night...
Kenny was a genius man, genius doesn't need more than one take, they just play, and then you choose what you prefer, but all are GREAT for sure !!!
Sure It's one take only. You can listen to different solos in different Sting's gigs on the same track. He more likely prepared some licks as patterns to approach the chords progression and then improvised with different nuances in each gig. He was pure talent, he had incredible rhythmic skills and amazing musicality ( crazy stuff on only 3 simple chords ! )
@@RogerBiwandu Rodge, you know because you are one of the best drummers out there! What kinds of projects are you into lately?
I saw Sting at Deer Creek on the Mercury Falling tour, they did Bring On The Night in an extended jam, except that Kenny improvised a new solo. But it was amazing!
Kenny was a genius for sure, not to detract from that I don't feel however that he is comparabe to Charlie Parker, mostly becuase there are very few people who can be. IMO, Parker's league includes peopel like MIles Davis, Art Tatum, and the like.
Yes. Tension, resolution.
Key point = Musical chemistry~~
Nice, I heard something very similar about the right or wrong notes, that was Herbie Hancock talking about Miles Davis
I heard Miles Davis saying the same thing about Jimy Hendrix.
@@banjopink4409 Jimi!
Yes, I thought about that too!
I don't really know Kenny's work with Sting, but it's something i will look into further. Sting seems to be an incredibly sage guy, at least from this brief video
I'm surprised to see no mention of Kenny w/ the under-rated Stone Alliance. He, Don Alias and Gene Perla were easily as close as any group KK performed with
❤
I agree..
A note does not stand of its own achord, it's power comes from the note that preceded it and the note that is to follow.......
Same with an interval, or a chord.
it sure does :-)....
I tuned in because I thought Sting was going to talk about David Sancious.
Sting your accent is now all over the place

Damn, why doesn't he just quote Miles Davis.
I dont bilieve in a" world is runing down!"
I bilieve in human being that made a lot of mistakes, a lot of bad choice. They have to grow up. They have think about to do the things more slowly. In my country, Brasil. Exist one frase: "O apressado come cru "
The time is out of the our clock. There is a watch
That hasnt hours, minutes, seções.seconds.
I certainly don't relate Kenny to the serendipity of wrong notes-
I wish Sting would take some more creative risks and be more edgy. Look at Sumner's Tales. It was dark, a lot of odd time signatures and unusual chords. The same feel as Synchro or Ghost. Sting thrives better in adversity.
Ghost is Sting’s magnum opus!
@@WeLuv9x5 Yeah, and sometimes I will play Zenyatta for days on end too. That album has a little more variety.
Drugs kill
I was told by kenny himself that You said very mean cruel things that hurt him very much when he worked for You,so why not give Your character a break and tell the whole truth ,heal your soul as part of your legacy
That’s why his name is Sting. He’s still lovely though and we all love Kenny Kirkland and know him because Sting brought out his talent! Kenny was magical!! May he be blessed. We all love his work forever.
Sounds like Sting had some creative tension with Kirkland like another guy by the name of Stewart Copeland.
Sting is stuck on repeat here. He said made exactly the same comments about Gil Evans in regards to "next note choice" years ago. Boring, pseudo intellectual, globalist, sell out.
You sound tremendously disappointed.
@@banjopink4409 With Sting? Yes, tremendously.
@@thewomble1509 If I may, what had you been expecting?
@@banjopink4409 Having been a former Sting fan ( I gave up after the Lute album), for nearly 40 years, I've heard the same old tropes trotted out a thousand times. I've earned the right to be disillusioned!
@@thewomble1509 OK. I can see that, though I remain curious as to what you'd expected from him but which he failed to deliver on?
and yet sting cant sing piano music and has no real piano songs
