People tend to build off this one the most because it has the most characterization and is the most tragic. It should be noted that there is some dispute on whether or not Medusa was assaulted at all due to some wording choice by Ovid. The word he used "Vitiasse" is vague and _can_ mean "R*pe" but can also mean "to spoil" or "to taint." Since priestesses of Athena were meant to be chaste, this could just mean she was "tainted" in the sense she was no longer a "pure" chaste woman by having a toss in the temple with Poseidon. Either way, Athena gets mad and curses her. Also, Ovid was an anti-authoritarian Roman writing about Greek myth like, 700 years later, so anything he has to say should be taken with a grain of salt. There's also Hesiod's version where she is always a monster and is the only mortal, and most beautiful, of 3 Gorgon sisters. Those being Medusa, Stheno, and Euryale. She willingly lays with Poseidon in a meadow of flowers in this version. There are many others as well. My personal favorite is that Medusa simply claimed her beauty rivaled Aphrodite's, and thus Aphrodite got pissy and gave her snake hair. I just think that one's funny. At the end of the day, Medusa is as tragic, evil, or whatever as you want her to be. There's no "definitive" version of her, so it really just depends on which you like. Oh, and sorry for the wall of text, I just like Medusa.
