2016 Yamaha YFZ450R Track and Trail Test Review

- Yamaha’s YFZ450R high-performance ATV enters the 2016 season carrying pro number one plates from both the Grand National Motocross, and Cross Country Race Series with factory racers Chad Wienen and Walker Fowler. The YFZ450R was designed to work on the trail with performance focused for the track, so it’s no wonder the machine has risen to the top of both disciplines of racing.
Since its launch in 2009, we’ve done several track tests of the YFZ450R. Walker Fowler’s success in cross-country racing is a reminder that the YFZR was developed for trail as well as the motocross track. We know that a majority of the YFZ450Rs sold will never be raced, and there’s a good chance they’ll be ridden on both tracks and trails. With this in mind, we rounded up a 2016 Yamaha YFZ450R for our first combination track and trail test of the machine since 2009 to see how the recently updated machine performs against everything we have to throw at it.
Right out of the box, the YFZ450R is sort of the ultimate play racer that can rip it up on the track or the trail. Arguably, no other stock 450 in history could do both as well. It offers tremendous versatility for building a machine that can win championships in the woods, or on the frack for local racers, and top pros alike. For around $1,000 in accessories, you can get started racing MX locally, and for a bit more, you can build a reliable, competitive cross-country racer.
While some will balk at the machine’s $8,899 price tag, you get what you pay for. In this case, it’s a recently highly-updated, second generation machine, that’s borderline race ready, and frankly, it’s hardly more expensive than a dirt bike. We, too, see the need for a price point focused sport ATV that adults will want to own and ride, but the YFZ450R is that machine. The 2016 YFZ450R is for the serious sport ATV enthusiast who wants a machine providing the shortest distance between the dealer showroom and the checkered flag, whether you’re racing the Nationals or just racing your friends.
I've never seen such good review about quads ! Congrats !
frenchLeon
WOW! Thanks for the HUGE complement and for subscribing.
You got the best reviews for quads. tnx!
+Nir Hason So many people just jump on the web to complain. Its so awesome when someone takes the time to say something nice. Thanks for watching!
Since most of us can't afford to go out and buy a 10 thousand dollar quad every Tuesday do u think you guys could do like a series were you take the old models and make them better to compete with the new ones? Thanks
Then what would be the point of buying a new one if an old one is comparable?
Very extensive and nice to watch! But now I want to own a YFZR even more.. haha
We've been watching your beach race videos. It looks like you deserve a new YFZR. Those races look fun as heck!
I'm working so hard to get one. Had a 04 yfz 450 3 years ago and I miss it.
These YFZ/RAPTOR videos are the best on RUclips hands down!
Getting a 2021 450R SE next month!! So excited
Such a sexy ATV I'm 12 and I currently ride a raptor 250 and I'm looking for this to be my next ATV
Theread 34 same im 14 and have a raptor 250 klx 125 pw 80 and a sportsman 400

Awesome I have been waiting for a 2016 YFZ 450r test nice video
+goblin merks Glad we could be of assistance. 2016 Raptor 700R coming next week. Later this summer, YFZ450R vs Raptor 700R.
+ATVonDemand Man y'all are going to have me like a kid waiting for Christmas hahah
I have a 2016 yfz450r and love it fmf power core 4 slip on exhaust plus 2in steering stem rental fatbars acerbis handguards gbc XC masters tires and ride the trails hard and hillclimbs team Yamaha ride on.
Nice job, still have the best machine reviews on the web. Would love to see some BruteForce 750 stuff.
+rzl07375 Yes, we are overdue to reevaluate the Brute Force 750. 2017s are coming. We will look into it. We assume you have already seen our last Brute Force 750 test?Thank you very much for watching and the kind words. If you want to subscribe and share our channel on your Facebook page we would really appreciate it.
+ATVonDemand .......Yes I seen your older test, it helped me in my decision to buy one. very fun machine for a 700lb plus 4x4.
I've always wondered, how do you get quads onto mx stands? Awesome video btw, I love your channel!
Thanks for the love, it is appreciated!
It gives you a lot of power
I know I’m late but, I’m 14 about 6’1 and I found this quad for a smokin good deal and I think it’s good, I currently drive a 300 Kawasaki bayou and I know it’s old and slow but I think I could definitely handle this but idk
You could easily handle one, if you know what your doing it’s not very hard
I am 14 not many jobs available but I'm hoping to get one of these but 8-9k dollars is crazy hopefully I will be able to get one soon
ThunderPies YT by a used older one and put some mods on it don't buy a knew one
Hope to get one soon .. currently 16 with a raptor 250 and looking forward towards an upgrade :)
We wish they still made the Raptor 250. You're going to love the stability and suspension of the 450. Let us know when you pick one up.
Just a quick question about the 450 ... is it true that it requires constant maintenance and that it breaks down real quick?
@@abdullaalkhan7935 It's definitely gonna be a higher maintenance machine then your raptor 250
What is the top speed?
We didn't do a top speed run but we never seemed to run out of speed.
please do a review of 2016 kawasaki brute force and 2016 Honda Rubicon.!
+John Smith That's two votes for the Brute Force.
+ATVonDemand
thanks for the reply! anxiously awaiting review of new brute force!!
looking into getting a yfzr for my first 4 wheeler. might as well get an off road toy since i live in the middle of nowhere
Break it in easy, keep the air filter, and oil clean, and enjoy! Tell us how you like it.
I wish Yamaha made a YFZ 250 and had a more affordable Price
Jaiden Adams yes, we too would love to see some more affordable sport quad options
Go to a dealer and leave a down payment and lease it thats how i get expensive stuff
And the clutch is good
Whats better for trail riding, yfz 450 or Yamaha raptor 450
Raul Valdivia No
K thx,
Roger doger
RealyRandomStudio Savage there is not such thing as a raptor 450😐😐
There is no such thing as a Yamaha raptor 450 🤣💀
How reliable are the newer yfz's 2017 and newer
I have TRX250X and I’m 14 years old. Had it for almost 4 years now and should I ask this four wheeler to my parents?
FELIXTRICKSHOTS I would go for more like an 09 off Facebook 😂🤷🏼♂️
FELIXTRICKSHOTS I'm a bit late, but I would move up to a 400 class atv before going to a 450, because 14 is a little young and a 400 will get you more familiar with the way a 450 feels and has plenty of power.
Is this what they used to call the "raptor" back in the day? I recall they used to make a 300cc 2t until the 4t took over.
Nope, this is the yfz450r. It began life in 2009 if memory serves.
@@ATVonDemand Aah fuck, ignore what I said, was thinking of the Banshee.
Cowboy Animal or the warrior I think the small raptors are basically a reworked Yahmaha Warrior 350.
I'm 14 but 6'1 and 170 pounds I don't feel entirely comfortable with the size of the yfz450r but I'm thinking by the beginning of the season I might get one
Its small eh
I bought a new Brute Force 750 to ride with my girl, but think an 09 and up YFZR is what I need next for weekend rides with my buddies. Are all 09 and up considered R’s?
The yfz450r came out in 2009. There were a couple of overlap years where Yamaha offered the carbureted YFZ450. The best way to know if you are dealing with a 450 or 450R is simply look and see if it has a carburetor. Also, the 450R models are a bit wider. Yamaha did make a yfz450x for 2 years there was also fuel injected. It is basically a newer version of the yfz450r built for Tiger trails and GNCC Racing. It didn't stick around for long because most of the trails today are wider due to side by sides. Hope this helps. If you have any other questions don't hesitate to his back.
Love the video ATVonDemand
Glad you liked it.thanks for the positive feedback.
I am 6'3 and 250 pounds and I am looking for a sport ATV any suggestions
It kind of depends on what type of riding you do. If your looking for a sport ATV to trail ride the Raptor 700 is a great big guy bike. The YFZ450R is a little more compact due to its racing focused design. If you want a race machine and you feel cramped on the YFZ450R it features an adjustable bar clamp allowing you mount the bars more forward or rearward. You could also purchase a taller stem, bar clamps, or handlebars. We will be releasing a YFZ450R vs Raptor 700R test video in the coming weeks. It might help you choose between these two machines.
If you are looking to buy something older the Can-Am DS650 was a cool big-guy bike for play riding.
+ATVonDemand thank you I will be looking forward to that video and I also forgot to mention I'm only 14 but I already have a Polaris 400 explorer which is a utility but I mainly use it for going threw mud an I am looking for a sport for trail riding and drifting if u will and just having fun and driving around on it I live in Wisconsin and do plan on riding in the winter so cold starts are another thing that I need to look out for I mean if anything will eventually start but that's a lot of extra work that can be avoided
Go with a yzfr
Whatever Clan *YFZ*
Been wanting this for years!...
Make it happen.
did the '16 get an even bigger crank? i thought they moved to the .25mm bigger end rod in '14..?
The YFZ is only for racing? Or no?
No
It is definitely a capable Trail machine but prefers to be ridden hard.
Would this quad be good for trail riding also
Absolutely. Trails are wider these days due to side by sides so the YFZ typically has plenty of room to maneuver. Its 48.5" width offers great stability on side hills. The engine is best suited for somewhat experienced riders who can keep the engine revved up. The engine feels eager and runs best in the midrange and top-end. If you are a novice or just enjoy cruising around at a casual pace a good amount of the time you might consider the Raptor 700. It's engine is happier plugging along but rips when you want to go fast. It's a bit narrower so a little more body English is needed. It's also perhaps a bit more plush and the ergonomics are more comfortable for long rides or taller riders. Have a look at our YFZ450R vs Raptor 700R Shootout to see how they compare. This might help you get a better grip on the comparable. ruclips.net/video/B9S6Q2KQSIA/видео.html
No it would suck get the raptor 700 there to tourqey plus they over heat when riding slow
Yes, and they’re great at hill climbing.
So you can whip a quad, hell yeah lol
Yes you can.
2018 yfz review please
cesar del rasso at this point it would be a 2019 review.
Then 2019 please
@@ATVonDemand can you please do a 2019 review
They are exactly the same with different graphics. No update since 2014
Hey..Which is faster the yfz450 carb models or yfz450r fuel injected models?
Never raced them head to head. The older model feels faster but the newer one is smoother.
the fuel injection is slower stock to stock so you have to get an aftermarket exhaust system, filter with no airbox lid and a fuel commander and then tune the commander and then you can win against the carborated
Is the yzf 450r the same thing as the yzf 450
No, the YFZ450R a completely resigned machine launched in 2009 and updated multiple times since. The older macine is competitive, if not a touch faster out of the box as the engine goes. The Chassis on the R is around 49" wide. The original YFZ450 was around 46. The extra width makes a big difference on the race track, not as much on the trail.
+ATVonDemand OK because I'm getting graphics for the yfz450 and I have the yfz450r
Don't think that will work.
I know since you you told me that I'm getting graphics for the yfz450r and then I'm going to race
I am getting a 450r special edition
Love the neon accents on the 2017s.
How would this compare to my old quad. It was a 2006 yfz 450 bored to a 490 fully built engine with +2 long travel arms with elka shocks?
I plan on getting a 2016 anniversary edition as my 2006 was also a anniversary edition
@@thegunreviewer5598 If your shocks were set up properly, they might work a little better than what comes on the YFZ450R. The stock shocks on the new YFZ aren't bad though. Stock the new yamaha handles much better than the old yamaha. Obviously, you are going to have to do some motorwork to the new bike if you wanted to run like a 490 big bore gen 1 YFZ. Unless you drag race all the time, or just shoot the biggest dunes If you do the big 3 to the fuel injected machine, it makes a big difference. Here's a video that explains the difference.

I want the raptor 700 but im only 5'5" 130lbs so i feel like that would be too much quad for me (power to weight ratio) because im more of a trail rider & i love to rip in the trails, not ride slow and drift almost every turn. Would the 450 be a better choice?
Assuming you are old enough to ride one, a smaller lighter rider can handle the Raptor. Test ride one before you rule it out. We have let some smaller ladies ride them in the past and they liked the 700.
ATVonDemand Thanks for replying and Im old enough haha, im just on the smaller size of the human race. I always loved the 450 but i heard it has no reverse and requires high maintenance which im not too fond of since i like trail riding. I just love the wide stance for drifting and the throttle response of the 450. I guess i could always change the sprockets for the raptor and get an adjustable rear axle to widen the stance a bit.
You have no idea how many 11-15 year-olds want to know if we would recommend a 450 for them. That's the only reason I mentioned age. A widened version of the Raptor would be a cool machine don't you think?
ATVonDemand Haha yea i totally understand. You're just doing your job by protecting Yamaha and your company. But most definitely, i think i might go that route after i finish messing around with this little 300 i toy around with. And get up some more money. Thanks for replying and keep up the good video reviews. Any chance you can get a video out for the can am outlander? I always loved heavy sport quads.
We're working on it.
best 450 ever
Slight hesitation = THE BOG! Don't forget to add that $700 Vortex x10 ECU when you buy this bad boy :)
We're going to find out if that is really necessary this summer. Dasa says no. We will find out.
+ATVonDemand would of been nice to do this back in 14 but I'll take what I can get.
Sorry bro, we can't test it all. AT least you have arguably the best programmer out there. We have noticed many new model ATVs with low end hesitation, slow warm up times, or other symptoms resulting from building ATVs that are CARB compliant.
I owned a 16 yfzR and absolutely hated it. I loved my 2009 model yfzR I had. It was regression, not progression from Yamaha
ill be honest, I love my carbureted yfz 450 with the big 3 and acouple little personal touches( i take care of it and keep it clean) to the point that i dont feel like i need a fuel injected yfz, i liked having a challenge and just man handling that thing
09 was the best year for the yfz450r believe it or not.😂
Never understood why quads have to meet emission standards... it ruined the sport quad market
hammar162 the emission standards are easy enough to overcome. We believe a lack of budget priced options and overbearing age restrictions have done more to harm the sport Market than anything.
ATVonDemand same thing happened in the early 90's.
Ronald Tartaglia I remember it well. I remember being a very young teenager looking through the window of my local Honda Suzuki dealer at a huge row of lt250s, lt500, trx250r and TRX250X. A couple years later, all gone.
+Ronald Tartaglia u
I had a 2006 yfz450, used to race Pro am class ( not in the states ) was stock bore but very worked it made 60whp, thing was a bitch to try ride slow with. Either full throttle or don't bother. Extremely responsive snappy and definitely not user or beginner friendly. Moved country and quads are stupid expensive so I'm probably going back to 2 wheels
New dirt bikes cost the same as new quads here in the U.S.
Hi just wondering what is quicker threw a trail utv or yfz450r with the same driving abilty
Great question. Probably depends on the trail.
@@ATVonDemand thanks what corners faster and can you do a video on this
Is this a joke?
Do you the YFZ450R is faster than the raptor 700R drag racing
In our YFZ vs Raptor shootout we were getting the holeshot on a motocross track more often on the Raptor. Drag racing is your thing you can build a high-horsepower Raptor when a higher level of reliability then a 450
ATVonDemand so the 450 is not for drag racing
Big Boi Fishing no 450 is for motocross bud, you’d have better luck with the 700 and build that.
Raptor faster than 450r in straight line
@@xmanpickens4394 cap I got a 2020 yfz450rse and have beat every raptor I raced

Can you do a trx450
+Gav3n 314 We'd absolutely love too, if Honda would start making them again. Seriously Honda, please?
+ATVonDemand they made a 2016 though
+Gav3n 314 no they did not they have not made a 450R since 2014 check Honda's website they list 2014 for the 450 R and 400x
Will it beat a Raptor 660?
JoAquiin Royeló from short distance yes
Not in a drag race. Don’t listen to the 450 fan boys no replacement for displacement bigger engine will win mod for mod
Yeah but it's so much more fun than the 660!
haterget1nb3ast YFZ has more top speed, handles better, and “mod for mod” will beat the raptor in every way. There’s a reason why you can’t find one beating a YFZ.
The yfz is quicker and more agile. However, in a straight drag race the raptor will win based on the fact the raptor has more horsepower and torque.
How well do these do in the dunes ?
zeus pacheco amazing but u probably want to get some paddle tyres
Henry Angell just got one
Just waiting on the paddles
Better on the side hills than the Raptor due to more stability but not quite as well if drag racing up hills is your mission. As an overall dune machine, its great!
So I have a question.
Because the suspension on this is set up for 150-200lb riders, and I currently weigh 300 pounds, (I'm not fat, I'm just tall lol) would that mean new suspension or losing weight?
Well if you are at a healthy weight for your height and bone structure we cant really recommend you lose weight. You will need to address your suspension at 300 pounds though. New shocks aren't necessary though. Companies like Race Tech can revalve and respring your stock shocks to work correctly for your weight, riding ability, and intended style of riding, MX, XC, dunes, etc. Hope this helps, if now let us know.
ATVonDemand I am at a healthy weight, I'm just a big person lol. And thank you, I'll look into that.
i wish they still made 3 whellers. No quad can ever come close to the 200x, 250r, or the 350x
Disloyal Dashie ya me too there were just too many idiots riding them
Me too. 😢
Umm they do look at bvc trikes converts a dirt bike to a 3 Wheeler very common the 3 wheelers are back and better then before
is it 5 up or one down 4 up?
Jagz 1 down 4 up
1 down &4 up
I want to buy a 450 Atv should I get a KFX 450R or YFZ 450R or another brand?! Let me know soon please..
I ride a 2005 Honda trx450r and I love it, great reliable bike
if I were u I would buy yfz...
If you want to ride on tracks and wide-open trails, the YFZ450R is pretty hard to beat, especially if you want to buy something new.
Well if you do buy a new one definitely get a yfz450r they are more low slung and easier to corner. I rode a Farley recent model of the trx450r and it felt way to high off the ground compared to my 2005 trx which is closer to the ground. so yes if you want a more race friendly quad from the factory go with the yfz
@@christianthomas7282 You got different sized tires on your 05? Because the 2014 is actually a lower sitting quad then the 05 is.
About how much longer on the 200x's ?
Less than a month.
+ATVonDemand Can't wait !
The older carburetor equipped YFZs are fast and hard hitting four-strokes. A slip-on pipe, retarding the exhaust can, removing the airbox lid and rejetting the carburetor will get you around 50 hard hitting horsepower. By 2007 Yamaha has worked to extract more low-end power out of the engine but its still a hard hitting race ready motor for most riders.
We'd look to buy a low-hours, clearly well-maintained machine with as few motor mods as possible. Old YFZ motors were pretty reliable if well maintained and motor mods were kept to a minimum. Its a great poor mans race motor right out the box. Its still a beast by today's standards.
If you want to ride trails or race XC its width is good. Its stable for its approximate 46" width. If you wan to race motocross competitively expect to drop around $2,500 for wider A-arms, axle, and a shock revalve and respring.
Check the air boot if possible for signs that the filter has been kept clean, make sure the oil looks fresh and clean, and look at the top of the upper front shock mounts for signs of cracking. Missing paint in these areas are a sign of frame stress. The older YFZ frames were often gusseted for racing. in that area. Hope this helps. Good luck.
By 2007 the motor had received a number of updates and the swingarm was strengthened. Given the option we'd take the 2007. Unless of-course the 2004 was pristine and the 2007 was heavily worn.
Thats some majestic hair
hello how much cost one of this
$8,999 in the U.S.
I just have to ask, even as a Yamaha fan (owner of a 2015 YZ250F), why does Yamaha use such a crap engine in their 4 wheelers? Why not use the engine right out of the YZ450F in the YFZ450R? That thing makes like 57HP, compared to the 40HP of the current YFZ. I mean hell, even the 250 in the YZ250F makes just about the same power output as the 450 in the YFZ. What gives?
Its the same engine its because the yz450f have a small wheel that weight probably 15 pound the yfz 450r have an axle with 2h wheel that weight 25 pound eich !
@Quading Channel im pretty sure they are similar but weight is a big difference
@Quading Channel yea but even if both have the same motor there will be a difference! I actually own a 2006 yfz 450 and it pulled really hard! But couldnt keep with a kx450f tho! Sad that i blew it up. I just bought a 2006 ltr 450 and it run so much better it have way more bottom end than my yfz!
Bought yfz for 1700
Do it have reverse
No
@@ATVonDemand I wouldn’t think so
I think the ds450 is better than this one right now.
What's a DS450? They haven't built that machine since 2014. Unfortunately, the DS450 was never a very reliable machine.
ATVonDemand Can-Am DS450, In my opinion it's way better than the yfz currently.
so should I buy yfz? I could buyit for 1700
You're insane.
why
Fuck idk get it , is the engine weak ? He said its not that good goinf ip hills and i can clear most jumps , why not all jumps ? Wtf does that mean ?
Jay marin calm down. The engine is strong. It pulls hardest from mid to top and revs out quickly. It's not as powerful off the bottom as the Raptor 700R, but the power is snappier on the 450. We're quite sure you wouldn't be disappointed with the engines performance, especially with an aftermarket exhaust. If you have any other questions please let us know.
ATVonDemand thanks , im just looking into buying this atv , i just wanted to know what it mean when they say its not a lowerfull as the raptor , sorry for my language
