    It's been a while since I've touched another mans needle indicator, and certainly not in metric, but I was under the impression you needed half a turn of preload on the dial for the reading to be worth much. That said I learned from a guy who knew half as much and got within a hair of violent if you doubted him.

    • @samc5898
      @samc5898 6 лет назад +10

    @3:50 - properly designed involute gears do not slide. The teeth just roll over one another. There's an excellent diagram and explanation at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Involute_gear

    • @erroneum
      @erroneum 6 лет назад +8

      If I'm reading that correctly then there's no sliding friction only at one particular point, the pitch point.

    • @BerndFelsche
      @BerndFelsche 6 лет назад +10

      If you care to add to AvE's blood sacrifices, you can test that it rolls by holding a thin piece of paper (thickness < backlash) between a pair of meshing teeth as you slowly turn one of the gears with the remaining hand. The paper should not be tugged along with the gear tooth, indicating a perfect roll. The indentation of the paper corresponds to the length of contact face.

    • @AtlasReburdened
      @AtlasReburdened 6 лет назад

      erroneum That's what I read as well.

    • @slome815
      @slome815 6 лет назад +5

      This is simply not true, yet is told by many teachers. Involute gears do slide over each other, just not at the pitch circle. Just take an old gear and look at it while turning. There is a lot of sliding friction with gears.

    • @terrorfirma2764
      @terrorfirma2764 6 лет назад +11

      In a perfect system the teeth do indeed "roll" over one another, but seeing as the perfect system does not exist there will be some sliding friction due to production tolerances/backlash in the system. Wear will also introduce sliding friction between the gear faces eventually.

    I was constantly told by cadd teacher that key locks are very strong and very hard, just very brittle. They are so hard that you could use them as a cutting tool bit for a lathe.
    They are designed to withstand a specific amount of sheer force before breaking. It's an engineered safety failure point to protect the machine as a whole.

      What I don't get is.. I own two pairs of jeans.. extravagant I know.. but the thing is.. my humble abode has in excess of six wardrobes.. (I started to loose the will to live when my mental wardrobe count got to six, so I may be off with that measurement by an order of magnitude)... Now given that the dear departed, late lamented dog, didn't wear denims, what in the name of all that is merciful lives in those wardrobes.
      I have been assured that there is nothing in them that isn't vital for our future survival, but I'm not convinces.
      By the same token, I'm far too sensible to investigate the matter further, since the resulting reaction would be off the scale on the sulk-o-matic..

    Dialling in a vice 101. Only pinch down one hold down stud. Use this side as the "hinge" which stays fixed and tappy tap tap to move the "free" end. Nip them both down & tweak the last few hundredths straight

    I own a real fuken skookum choocher of a Kenmore sewing machine from about 1968, and I fix my shit all the time. That would be a fun take apart protect, but you'd never get it back together. They're complicated little bastardos

      Does that have the drop in cam system? By looking at me you'd never know I was an expert with the button attachment!

      John Possum Could never get the damn button hole maker to work on my Kenmore. Went and bought 7 Husqvarna machines. Everything from embroidery to sergers to sewing to industrial. They are great

      Sewing is one of those skills I'm damn glad I picked up.
      After much wailing and gnashing of teeth, convinced my mom to part with her old sewing machine (rebranded Singer from the 60's methinks). Nary a shred of plastic within the guts. Stitches right through nylon webbing and cordura like a champ.

      I took right apart and fixed a 1962 Husqvarna 2000. My grandmother's old sewing machine that ceased and broke. Took two days, but I'm less skilled than Ave. Wonderful peace of kit to get acquainted with, it did manually what sewing machines these days all do digitally.

      Ugh, don't remind me. I've been putting off going spelunking inside my Russian borne 1980 clone of whatever sewing machine to replace a broken gear. Fucking nightmare plaguing me.

    Hey Ave. It was probably possible to stand that shaft up and bolt it to a plate of sorts on the mill table or even bolted to a plate then clamped in the vise. That way you could side mill all four flats in a single setup!
