- If you're a super advanced Tacoma elitest, this video is not for you. I kid? This will be a simple video explaining the spare tire options and removing the spare tire from your 3rd generation Tacoma. Hey, I even have wheel weights of the spare vs TRD Off Road if you're interested. "Now you (already) Know. And knowing is only half the battle".

Seriously, felt like I was solving some weird puzzle to lower the Frankenstein platform that was my spare tire! Thanks!
Awesome! You explained this fast and simple. You earned my like!
Awesome video. Thank you for the knowledge.
Thanks for explaining how to get it back on! This is the only video that explained how to take the spare off and then getiing it back on.
You're welcome!
Dude - you totally save my butt! I was gonna climb UNDER & thought you had to unscrew the thing! Thanks.!
Just what I needed--thanks alot.
Thanks for getting to the point! Got the info I needed without a bunch of BS.
Just blew a tire across from Arrowhead in KC in the dark.Looked this video up and got the spare down in pitch black .Thanks
Thank you sir ,the video was ah great help
Thankyou! We could not work this out from the manual
Great job! Thanks!
Very helpful. Thanks
Excellent, thank you.
Just had my spare tire stolen, here to try to store the chain and replace it
I was having trouble getting the key to turn the lowering device. So I sat down behind the truck and shine a light at the lowering device and put the rod in and saw the key go in the slot
Dude I never would have known this. Just saw a screw in my tire and need to know this incase something happens before I fix it. Thanks
You mentioned that a Tacoma crank down spare tire lock (PT276-34071) would be easy to circumvent, but I don't see how with a raised spare tire blocking access. A thief would have a very difficult time trying to destroy the tire lock through the bumper access port.
My SR needed another attachment on the end of the hook. A hex head. Then the tire dropped down fine
Thank you very much you are the greatest I could not figure out how to lower the tire we had the wrong end going in there so thank you for the video
You're very welcome!
Super helpful. Thank you. I just got my first truck, a 23 Tacoma and was wondering how to drop it. Let alone also what the chain was for that dangled. Good video!
Glad it helped
Thanks a lot!!!
Will the bracket support the spare tire with the valve stem facing down instead of facing upwards ? On all of my other trucks I always had the valve stem facing down so that I could easily check the air pressure without dropping the tire down ..
good job. . .thank you . .
Because there are various points of resistance that are not the final lowering point, I wrapped a piece of tape around the lowering bar(s) at the point when the hook is in its final location at the point where the rod reached its final destination.- So that you can determine when the taped section of the rod is fully inserted, and its not just hitting one of the pinch points. I also discovered that the hook (as was mentioned) does nothing, so don't go trying to hook it and pull back to make sure it is engaged. once you reach the end of the track, just start cranking anti-clockwise, and the wheel will start dropping down. I hope the guy who invented this method was not responsible for any of the other Tacoma engineering! Good luck!
The tape method is 🧠.
I agree.I wish they made the rod solid steel instead of parts you slide together. I also wish they put a bolt head on the lowering device and a socket end on the rod.
Say you do swap the steel spare with a stock wheel, is it possible to return the stick wheel to the spare location or is throwing it in the bed the only option?
From a woman who has no idea what she’s doing thank you👍🏼
Thank you. Unfortunately for me, my winch is stuck and I broke the hook off the end of the tool. Sad face emoji. Time to get out the cutting wheel.
Thanks! Just used your vid to show me. Now, do you know what the recommended tire pressure is for the spare?
Should be the same as the regular tires since it is the same tire: 29-32 psi.
I'm watching this and I dont even own a Tacoma.
Thank you very much!
You're welcome!
I have a spare tire? YAY
I tried for 20 minutes to get my spare out. This helps but WHHYYYY is it thus difficult to get my spare out in an emergency?
Similar to my Highlander.
Can it be mounted so that the valve stem is downward to check pressure?
I had to lower my tire also to check the air and I want to know also.
@@richardshermanjr1899 No, I can't remember exactly why but I mounted it back the same way and would not have done so otherwise. I think it has to do with the distance from the center hole to the outer edge of the tire. To check the pressure you could use one of those pressure gauges that angles back toward the hand.
Do you know if the spare tire has a tpms sensor? I would like to replace mi e with a trd pro wheel with a 265/70r17 but not sure if I have to swap the sensor. Thanks
I don't recall.
Will a 265/70/17 fit in the spare location ? 🤔
I thought that's the regular size
2006 needs a key..
You look very familiar. Do you happen to have a brother named Sharader?!
on any truck you need a full size spare incase you are actually using your truck for what it was made for.....duh
like hauling or towing
Have none of the people in the comments section ever heard of an Owners Manual?
let’s see that jack
So will the spare last just as long as the stock tires?
Yes, it's basically the exact same tire you're driving on.
Got the same system in my sorento amd my montero sport. And I hate who ever invented this with my entire soul.
Yeah that head on the lowering device should be a bolt head.
When you remove the spare does the chain hang from the bottom of the truck or can you tighten all the way up
You can tighten it up without a spare.
You really don't need all 3 sections to lower the tire, 2 is PLENTY long enough. Does anyone one know why it says temporary use only on the rim?
Spare tires/rims usually aren't stock size, width, etc but a cheaper tire that is just good enough to leg it 20 miles to get to a tire shop.
Of course some dealerships offer a spare stock tire for extra $, usually with a mark up for high profit. I believe the warning is left just to cover their liability, even if it is a stock tire.
Is there a tpms sensor in the spare?
No, it didn't look like it had one.
I think in the manual it says there is a sensor in the spare
Yes there is one in the spare. The reason I watched this video is to lower the spare so I can check the air because my light came on. I have a 2007 Tacoma.
I don’t get it. I tried to remove my spare and it wouldn’t do anything. Even at discount tire. They said I need the key.
There is an optional security feature for the spare tire in which you will need the key to lower the spare.
@@GTContent yeahh looks like it!! to amazon I go!
My hook wouldn’t engage the “nut”. Although Tacoma is overall a great product the quality control engineering for spare removal is crap. Your video is very good but one critique is that you should have a closeup where the hook engages the spare tightening device. Due to incompetent quality control from Toyota my hook is too big or the screw is too small. I put loads of pressure on hook and it engaged just enough to get it started but since it doesn’t engage properly it was a major struggle. By looking with flashlight thru hole you can’t tell what is supposed to happen. If you get the tire to drop you can grab the nut with your hand to loosen. I will engineer something to retighten but Toyota dropped the ball here by not making sure the hook will engage the nut for my 2011 Tacoma.
Although my manual says the spare tire has tpms sensor a tech at costco told me standard stem is yellow meaning my spare is not tpms and my other tires have aluminum stem color silver which means they are tpms, best to keep spare aired up but toyota engineers dont make it easy
Do they come with spares?
Mine did
Well, always wondered what a pain in the ass it would be to get my spare out from my Taco!!!! Looked pretty easy getting it down....now putting it back?
Easy to put back. Just make sure the bracket is aligned with the lug nut hole like I showed in the video and you'll be fine.
This is the last thing you want to deal with if you get a flat, esp in the middle of nowhere. I locked my spare in the bed.
"All you have to do..." are my least favorite words today. 2 hours by the side of the road because that thing that looked like my lug nut key? Was a key... Too bad I cannot post photos.
Happy to provide photos of you'd like to add an "if this doesn't work... " postscript. 😎
Dang. That sucks.
Any flaking on your super white yet? i got a 2022 coming in next month on a non refundable deposit in super white and just now found all the issues with it. jesus.
I haven't seen anything yet.
Cant get mine whatsoever, thing wont catch
You might need a special key to do it.
@@GTContent Yes. mine came with a special key. got it down no problem once i got the key.. the key is not mentioned in the videos though, so some tacomas must have it, and some dont.
I must be bored to watch this. And first.
