Damned, it's a pet you are the human in that relationship! If nothing else works? Well, close bedroom-door (with the cat outside!)!

    • @GothicElf68
      @GothicElf68 8 лет назад +17

Letting your animals breed contributes to the overpopulation problem. There are too many animals in shelters and being euthanized as it is. Also, you cannot count on being able to "give away" kittens to friends and relatives. Better to get them fixed and if friends and family want an animal, they can get one at the shelter.

Ugh same! I used to have a cat named Luther who knew I got up around 5:45 to 6 for high school. This means he’d wake me up just early enough that I wanted to kill him and just late enough that it wasn’t practical to go back to sleep. Being a stupid teenager who went to bed too late I hated it. Now that I’m out of college though I’ve learned to appreciate it. I miss him. He died in 2017. His sister Martina has this habit of coming in for pets right as I’m about to get up. Like this morning when I woke up to run. But she knows roughly when I go to bed because she comes in and lies by my pillows. Then yells at me when I move her to turn down the covers.

My gray tabby Monty was like that, sadly he passed away in 2012 from cancer after almost twelve years of giving me joy. I was heartbroken. My black cat Ares is nine years old now and he's fat. I tried to put him on a diet and he would yowl constantly, driving everyone crazy. I ended up just changing to a different brand of food that has more protein and less filler. Ignoring a loudly yowling cat is easier said than done when you have family members who get grouchy from lack of sleep and being barely able to function at work and school for lack of a good night's rest. Ares is back to sleeping through the night (most of the time anyways). At least when he has his crazy time in the middle of the night he only wakes me up and not the entire household.

      @CommonInternetLurker 5 лет назад +56

@@aei3t121 aei3 t Nice to hear that my comment was helpful, but I should mention that my cat is almost 9 years old, we didn't get her into her current routine until she was about a year and a half.
The routines are similar, but the main difference is feeding. When she was a kitten, she needed to be fed more often but with smaller portions (2 packets of wet food a day: half a packet at 7am, half at 2pm, and full packet about half an hour before you go to bed with no accompanying dry food during the day). 15 minute plays before the smaller meals, and 30-45 minute play before the bigger nighttime feed so they'll sleep through the night.
Also; a little advice from a seasoned cat parent - depending on the cat, it could take anywhere between a few days to about a fortnight for them to understand their routine. Don't be tempted to give into the demanding meows for more food, they'll try and push their limits to see what they can get away with, and if you give in, it's a slippery slope to cat obesity & diabetes. You need to be firm, they might not like it at first, but if you love your little fluffball, you shouldn't budge. And they'll eventually learn that begging gets them no where lol
I recommend watching My Cat From Hell for the definite no-no's of cat parenting.
And if in doubt, Google is your friend :) Have fun and good luck!

He sometimes wakes at night to meow at nothing here and there but it'll only last for about 10 or 15 straight minutes. Then he goes to sleep. Cats are hilarious animals with so much personality it's just very amusing and entertaining to be a cat owner.

I used the super nanny technique that is used on human kids. When I was in bed and my cat was up being a pain I would pick him up, put him on his bed and say "bedtime" I kept doing that several times and after the third time I didn't say anything to him, just put him back on his bed. My cat sleeps through the night now. Some mornings he wakes up too early and I tell him "its too early go back to bed" and he does

philippa hyndman I believe you 100%...People need to learn to speak to their cats on a regular basis...They are exactly like toddlers...If you've babysat toddlers or worked with children, you can manage a cat...On my day off, we all sleep in...My 3 cats never bother me on my day off because, when I get back from work, I tell them, tomorrow is "cuddle-day" we shall sleep all day and watch horror movies....I guess saying that every day before my day off for years has worked...I communicate with my cats a lot; people think it's crazy but I speak English and bits of my native African language to them and they understand me perfectly.

This night I will ignore them. For sure! *heartmelting meow* okay, tomorrow...
I found a way to get my cats to let me sleep even though I can't ignore them when they unlock my heart with the sweetest meows (it only works if they wake you up because they're hungry). Before I go to bed I play with my cats a lot, then feed their wet food and then they sleep. After this I hide dry food pieces everywhere in the house and go to beed. So when they wake up after four hours due to hunger, they go and search the food (for them it's like looking for prey and hunting, kill and eat) so when they're done, they sleep until I'm wake.

She has her toys , beds and a place to climb. And a big window. She will start meowing when the sun comes up and we let her out for breakfast and loves. When my son had her at his place she would not let him sleep and he worked nights. I adapted her and this works out fine for us. I know everyone doesn't have a house big enough for their cat to have their own bedroom but her having her own space helped with her sleeping all night. Hope this helps

I use an alarm on my phone with a sound that I only use for my cat's feeding times. He knows he won't get breakfast until that alarm goes off at 8am. Every time I try to stop using that particular alarm, he starts waking me up earlier and earlier until it is the crack of dawn (currently 5:15 am). Then I have to go back to using the alarm and after a couple of days, he lets me sleep until my own personal alarm goes off.

Honestly I just give my cat a fill of dry in the morning with fresh water before I go to work to munch on during the day, when I come home around 6PM I pet him a bit, play if he's in the mood put him outside in a harness in the backyard for an hour, I give him the wet and fresh water, he usually eats 3/4 of the wet then goes to nap, and then comes back later at night for a snack. Then it's bed time. I just go to bed and he comes an hour later to curl up on my feet.
For me the secret was 1 or 2 hours outside when I come back home. He sneaks up on squirrels and birds, eats some grass, and takes a sunbath, then he comes back in when he's hungry.

If you plan on giving some, make sure you give the right dosage for your kitty's weight and only as a last resort when nothing else works.

honestly, you made a mistake - if you feed your cat mostly dry food, and give wet food as complementary food, DO NOT give it in the MORNING, cause your cat will always wake you up early in the morning, even at nights.
Now you have two choices: try to give wet food only after lunch or in the evening or buy an automatic cat feeder(you put wet food in it in the evening and set it to open itself automatically in, for example, 3:00 AM or so).
If you plan to feed only wet food, I guess an automatic cat feeder is a must have for you if you ever want to have a good night's sleep. It's really not that expensive too, for example I found one only for 15 bucks, so if you will look for it in ebay, I bet you can find one under 20 bucks. And that money was the best spent money in my whole life, cause after nearly a year of pretty bad sleeping, I was able to sleep all night and morning without any disturbance.

I disagree with the anti-free-feeding schtick. In nature, cats would eat many small meals throughout the day, not two big meals they have to gulp down before the food is taken away. A happy medium is feeding breakfast, leaving out some food but not a limitless supply, then refilling the food at dinner time and picking it up entirely at bedtime. This works very well for my cat who never overeats.

I always make sure there is just the bare minimal in the bowl at all times bc he eats every few hours. Sometimes more. So if he has access to more he eats till he pukes yanno? He has eating issues thanks to our old cat used to bully him off of the food they shared. We didn’t know back then that sharing food like that was a bad idea. Bc Momo never liked to let Shadow eat unless someone was there to move momo. Which eventually made Shadow tough up and say EFF YOU MOMO IMMA EAT. I mean, do you have a problem with your cat waking you up? Or anny other problem where your cat expecting something during a spesific time rather than all the time might be a good idea?
No? Well then this advice does not apply and you can continue on normally.
Yes? Well then I recommend to follow his advice of doing it gradually and it's hard to see your pet uncomfortable but it tends to be uncomfortable before you get used to a healthier routine. I suspect that your cat will become comfy whit it after a while.
And yea I get it your cat may also be extra paranoid but you have to think "did I really do this gradually" "did I give this a chance" and "did I really not give upp shorty after I saw my cat get uncomfortable" "Is it OK to discipline a human child even if it it makes them unhappy for a while?" Just as I would be surprised if your cat didn't get disturb by the fact that you took his food a way, I would be surprised if he couldn't get used to a new schedule. He just needs to know/learn that the food is coming at a surntan point whether he asks you or not and then he will feel safe about it. 🐈

Hi Jackson Galaxy, I have watched this video multiple times and my cat still won't let me sleep! To be honest ignoring gets hard when she is so stubborn in waking me up to the point of biting, sitting on my head, and pushing my body with her head. It has gotten to the point I have to close her out of the room, however, I feel wrong about that because I think it stems from some boredom and weird form of separation anxiety. I definitely encourage playtime before bed and in the process you mentioned, but 3:00 am hits and she is terrorizing me (with love) and refuses to let me sleep. I got her in May of this year and love her to pieces, but she had a rough beginning in life so I have had to address behaviors overtime, but in general she is so loving and always there for me. Your videos have been a huge help and encouragement in this process. Thank you!

@@letyceleste2805 not completely, but when I moved in with my now husband who also had a cat it got better. Also even before then, she really did well when I established more of a bedtime routine with her. Now she settles at the bottom of the bed every night (with her stolen stuffed animals) and stays there unless I get up at night. She will greet me and then go back to the foot of the bed. Only exception now is if I go away for a few days, but I prep for that lack of sleep then.

Watched this in preparation of getting my new cat a few years back. He's still on his meal schedule that was started from day 1, and NEVER does he wake me up. I have him trained to eat at a dinner bell sound, which decreases begging. Also , my morning alarm is his breakfast alarm, so if I change that to, say, 9am instead of the normal 7:45, I get ZIP from him! He's a good boy, but it's also DEFINITELY a result from this video!! Thanks for helping me give my cat structure and assurance in his day-to-day life

I feed my cat when I wake up and before I go to sleep. I give him HALF a cup and he is perfectly fine. When he is done eating he either A). Goes to his bed which is in my room or B). He "snuggles" with me then he goes to sleep in his bed. He is a AWESOME Cat and about 2-3 weeks he has those moments were he is running around the house at night and sooner or later he comes in my room and it's a perfect night. #COOLCAT

I kept my phone close enough to my head that I also felt the vibrations. Never had a problem with the alarm. I would imagine alarms are more noise/consistent than cat meows so they work through earplugs better 👍🏻

I tried this the past 2 nights. It worked the first night. Not last night. I played with him and fed him before I went to bed both nights. He didn't even bother me 2 nights ago, so no ignoring necessary. Last night it was kind of hard to ignore him when he tries to bite me (not hard) but it wakes me up. My cat is overall is a really good boy except when I sleep. He meows me to death and tries to bite me. It's like he's a totally different cat at night lol. I did go to bed earlier last night than the night before (only 45 min earlier). I was tired. I couldn't stay awake, ugh. It was always around 5am that he'd bother me. Lately it is around 3:30 to 4am. That is why I had to check out this video 2 days ago. It makes me tired everyday with him waking me up. Maybe cuz since I've had him, I'd give him treats to leave me alone. Idk if it's too late to train him to let me sleep. We have him 8 months now and he just turned 1 on Thanksgiving. I'd even tell my bf to give him treats if he's up and I'm awake in bed from the cat and my Weasley (my cat) knows I am telling my bf to give him snacks. I'll say "babe" and Weasley goes running to the closet where his food is lol. My smart boy

Seems like our cats are twins in behaviour. Mine has a Dr jackyll and Mr hide personality and at night just wants to play but he does that in a very dangerous (for us) manner. I haven't used him to treats whenever he does that but really no difference at all because the bottom line is I can't sleep and I can't ignore him. I'm really quite desperate

@@monicaandresini8899 yes, he's so different at night. I got automatic feeders recently, a dry and a wet and he's still bothering me these past few nights. Very weird, last week he didn't bother me on the weekdays but he did Sat and Sun night which is usually the opposite cuz the weekends I'm up with him later. It is hard to ignore when they walk on us and meow. It makes us not sleep. I'm so tired right now cuz he kept me up all night again. I am trying to manifest it using the Law of Attraction since I am a LOA coach. I thought I did last week but then he bothered me again. Maybe the universe us testing my reaction to him. Our bedroom doesn't have a door. It was dining room covered into a bedroom. We like having no door but if we has one, he'd meow outside of it but then at least he won't walk on me but what if he does something bad to get attention. I'd let him in and out him out if he bothers me, so he learns he is going out when he bothers me.

I've always been such a light sleeper that I can't deal with having a cat wandering around in the bedroom in the middle of the night, so I simply don't let mine in.

+jh099 I'm in the same boat. I've tried letting them sleep on the bed but I'm such a light sleeper than any movement or noise wakes me up. It's sometimes hard enough to sleep without them in the room! So yes, at night, bedroom door is closed and kitties get the rest of the house to enjoy.

you put your cat in a cage at night? cats are cats. they aren't dogs. you could just as easily let them roam and sleep in the house at night rather than locking them up in a highly confined space at night.
