I keep my cats bed at the end of my bed but when he was a kitten, his bed was right beside my pillow and so every night he picks up his bed and drags it up the bed and puts it beside me.
My former stray refuses to step on anything plush, fluffy, or fur. He likes his AstroTurf, woven jute, and 99 cent IKEA door mat. It’s like living with a Communist proletariat who shuns the bourgeoisie 😂
I had an old cat who did that. He was getting on for 15 and he insisted on sleeping on the doormat by the cat flap, cold and hard. I think he was guarding the house. Eventually I persuaded him to sleep on a faux sheepskin cat bed with reflective foil inside, to which I sneakily added a folded towel to make it slightly less hard. He loved that bed until he died.

I used catnip to attract my cats to their bed, they sleep in it most of the time. But at the end of the day, cats are free creatures they’re going to sleep where they please.
Me too. I ordered some catnip spray after my cat was ignoring his new bed. Once I give it a spray and walk away, he'll be in there for the next few hours and he's getting used to it without the spray.
Another reason: smells like it doesn't belong. If you have a good relationship with your cat, place a dirty, sweaty t-shirt (yours) in each bed. This says that yes, this bed belongs to us, come and own it with me.
Another reason - temperature. My cats love all of their different beds in winter and early spring/late autumn but when it gets really hot they sleep on the floor, in a transport box or on top of the table. It maybe that the cat is too hot for sleeping in a warm cuddly bed currently and it will love it later.
@@atropabelladonna Very true. I have a cat bed under a coffee table in the livingroom that is ignored until wintertime. There is a heat pipe right under the floor there and one of my cats has claimed it as his favorite place to sleep in the cold months. In the summer it is not touched.
I was going to comment something similar. Our cats rarely want separate space - even then they want to be in the same room.. If the bed doesn't even slightly smell like us, they won't use it. Sometimes that simply means leaving out out for 1-2 weeks and spraying catnip. Other times I have to put one of OUR scent soakers into it.
When I looked for a cat tree I was absolutely shocked to discover how expensive they were for how simple the used materials were. I ended up building a super simple cat tree that was 10x’s sturdier and 100x’s less expensive than any cat tree I’ve ever seen in stores. My cat loves it cuz she’s eye level with me at the top and it was only $15.
KatieKat I’ve found that Amarkat has very low prices compared to other cat tree makers through Amazon. I have a very very tall one and it was only about $60!
I built a cat tree too because I have a huge cat that kept jumping at store cat trees from weird angles until they'd break. Mine would have been cheaper had I not used the need to build a cat tree for my cat as an excuse to buy a bunch of power tools I didn't really need to build the cat tree. I built a cat tree so sturdy that even I can sit on it and with bigger platforms so my gigantic cat can stretch out on it.
Who Ever yeah luckily I was able to use my dad’s tools, plus I had a friend who had left over carpeting I used to cover the different layers. I’m not a builder by any means but I figured I could build something sturdier that I felt less anxious about my extremely rowdy cat jumping all over
@@katiekat2074 I've built lots of things before but I wanted some new power tools, which is the only reason it cost more money. My cats had broken several conventional cat trees and the last straw was when they bent the last one in half and one of the levels almost busted the sliding glass door! So I built them an 8 ft tall one with 4 x 4 pillars and half inch thick plywood for the levels. I just pulled the entire design out of my ass basically.
@@katiekat2074 My husband made one out of PVC pipe and wooden shelves covered by carpet remnant. My cats loved it and it was so inexpensive. Unfortunately, my husband passed in 2014 and I don't have a clue.
I would recommend putting the cats favorite person's scent on the new bed or cat tree. Works for me! Took me a while to figure that out. If it smells like me, Kitty will sleep there. I am her favorite piece of furniture!
I did that with the bed i gave my cat for christmas, It was so funny and at the same time no... My cat would avoid any place where the bed was, even his favourite spots. Now, after a year of using the cat bed as cat repellent... Let that sit... I putted a random towel over it and, oh boy!!!! Now he loves it and sleeps like a baby in it; so i found out Is the texture what he hates. So i can still use it as repellent If i need to LOL, and still be the cat bacinete if i cover it with anything.
Since I sew my cat beds on my own, my cats do use them because of my smell on it, but my cats have trouble with sharing. Once other cats used them, none of the cats want them anymore. 😭
My cat's favorite "bed" at the moment is a foam bed topper that I threw in the closet. It looped over itself like a wave, and the Baby sleeps inside every night. I don't have the heart to throw it out now.
That's adorable, but also, Jackson mentioned shape? So, if you really wanted to get rid of it, you could look into something of the same shape, and see how your cat responds? Idk, it doesn't seem like a problem, unless it's effecting you? I know some people like their houses to be really clean and neat.

😂 I rent an apartment. My cat poked a nice hole in the bedroom blinds. This is a fairly new place for us, moved in last year November, and we never had the horizontal blinds before, only the wide, vertical.
I bought 2 new beds when I got my kitties, and I kept finding one of them at the bottom of the stairs every morning. Thinking they just knocked it down while playing, I would bring it back up everyday. Finally one night I actually saw the boy cat dragging the bed down the stairs. I wasn't sure if he didn't want his sister sleeping next to him or what the deal was, but since he worked so hard to move it, I left it there. When I got home from work that day, he had dragged an old bed from the previous cat out of the spare bedroom and left it next to his at the top of the stairs. They sleep there side by side ever since. Now if I buy a new bed I leave it in the bag by the door. If it is approved, he drags it away somewhere. Unapproved beds stay right there bagged and ready for donation.
Getting a cat bed was the best thing ever! Before my cat would sleep on the bed with me, but I’m a toss and turner. So my cat would wake me up between 3-4am probably because he could never go into a deep sleep because of me. And because he woke me up so early, I would feel even less rested. Now he’s got his own bed on my dresser with a baby blanket in there, and he sleeps throughout the night until 6-8am every day.
I have just the opposite cat. Once she finds a spot in bed to sleep she becomes an immovable stone. I also toss around and I've just learned to work around her. Many a times I've accidently kicked her not knowing where she was; she doesn't even twitch. Then I need to get up but she's still fast asleep and has me pinned 😂.

My cat sleeps on my sons bed during day but chooses other favourite places to rest at night. I have never encouraged my much loved cat into my bedroom at night because I get asthma and thought best to avoid. Occasionally he does get up and walk round my bed and enjoys it but I’m mean and gently put him on floor. He hates soft cat beds but loves expensive leather chair that’s now his space no one sits onit as we know it’s his 😊
Been buying beds every couple of years for the past eleven I’ve had my guy Lil’Bit(& no he’s not such a Lil’Bit anymore lol!). Just in case with age he’s looking for a little more comfy but no... he prefers a regular ole towel like “bath mat” & it’s fine by me only they can be a challenge to find(!) fortunately for me (& him) I’ve lots of friends who travel and don’t mind “accidentally” packing the one from their hotel for the sake of my guy, lol! 😹TTFN y’all ✌🏼🙏🏼🧿🧼🖐🏼
They can be if you’re at all handy 😉 There are specs, diagrams, designs, etc. online for DIY. They’re also VERY cost effective. You can go in the woods and find fallen branches to use for free! There are details on preparing and finishing the wood once you get it home. Good luck!!!
I made my own cat tree because I have a really tall cat who likes to jump onto cat trees at an angle. None of the store bought ones held up to that for very long so I built one that's strong enough for me to even sit on it. I also made the platforms bigger because my cat is huge. He was really happy with it because it let him actually stretch out on the cat tree which he could never do on the regular sized cat tree platforms.
I just adopted a cat. I got her a bed and at first she used it. Now a month later, she sleeps most everywhere. But pretty much likes my sofa. Not my bed because I toss and turn all night. And she don't like it.
Lady BUG was my other cats name many years ago..now boy Mika Jace call him Jacey..he won't go to sleep without being near me..every night he waits for the bed time Routine...bought him beds fluffy all kinds..loves boxes for naps...not cat bed..
I change my bed sheets every Saturday. Unless my cat is fast asleep on the bed, looking very cute and comfy. 😄 He also loves it when I put new bed sheets on my bed. It's like a game for him. Gotta love cats.
As soon as I enter the bedroom all 5 follow me in there and circle me like great whites. Then, three will proceed to sit on the bed as i try to make it. Like another commenter said I make the bed around them and tweak it as later as they leave and follow me around.
It took our dog 5 years to start using his bed, but then she loved it and we had to replace it several times in the ten years after. The dog not using its bed in the first years meant that the cat had a really oversized bed to sleep on for a while 🤣
Another one that wasn’t mentioned is cleanliness. My cat loves her bed but she wants it clean all the time otherwise she comes over to have a look then sniffs then walk away. She’s so finicky that I have a few blankets that I just rotate so I’m not always cleaning 😂
My cat just loooooooooves soft textures: faux fur, fleece, flannelette, cotton, wool and even the cushions of my wheelchair... I think she has 5 different places she sleeps and on my bed or any soft texture that has my scent on it
SlowPonk my old cat Felix loves to sleep in my wheelchair in my room, the cusion was so full with cat hair, that I had problems to clean all the cat hair. Sadly je passed away two years ago and my new cat Lulu don‘t want to sleep in the Wheelchair. He linkes to sleep on the bottom or on me! I know from other friends that their cat linkes to sleep in the Wheelchair too!
My girl’s favorite bed is an old, flat, worn out pillow. I’ve tried all kinds of beds but that old pillow has won every time! I have some cheep pillow cases I change out every now and then to keep the fluff from getting out of control.
When you get a cat bed always keep the receipt and check the return policy because every cat is different and you never know for sure what they will like.
I don't know about that... Would *You* like to buy a bed for your cat, that another cat has already used, and been returned? Your cat could react negatively to the scent of another animal; plus there's the potential problem of fleas and other parasites getting transmitted.
A lot of stores won’t let u return pet products like that bc of the possibility (and not that unlikely) of transmitting pests. They don’t know if ur cat has fleas or not. Even if u just took the tag off and it’s never been used, they often won’t let u return it
When I first got my cat I don't think he was used to having a bed. It took him a long time to even try it but now he loves sleeping on blankets and beds.
I had a baby in May and my kitty looooves the boppy pillow, the baby swing, the stroller, plus the baby hates the Moses basket we got but the cat spends hours in it every day! It’s hers now, I’m glad we splurged on a cute one because it’s never leaving the house if my kitty keeps loving it so much. :)

my 17 year old calico lucy has multiple "beds", a cat bed i bought, the sofa, and my computer chair. lately she's wanted the chair (which makes sitting at my computer a little difficult). i thought maybe she liked the cushion on the chair,so i moved it (with her on top of it) to the sofa. best of both worlds,right? no, she gets up and goes back to the chair. she is generous enough to let me have half the seat,but she wont relinquish it completely.luckily during the afternoon the sun comes in my window,and with a little coaxing she'll use the cat bed to soak up the sun while she sleeps. of course,as the sun moves across the floor i have to move the bed as well otherwise she sits up in it and meows until i do. she has me well trained.
My cat does the same, she sleeps in my computer chair or on top of my first closet drawer, and I just noticed bc of this video that she likes to sleep in places high enough to look at me.
My Oliver adores his bed :) of course at first, when I adopted him, his previous owner had left him a hand-knitted cat bed when they surrendered him. I brought it home with him, and he absolutely refused to go anywhere near it, and seemed noticeably upset by the fact it was even there. However, I also noticed that he began to only sleep on this one fleece slipper I had. Nothing else (other than on me). He loved to knead it and just lay on it, so I found a big fleece cat bed and omg he was in heaven.
Yeah. My cat does that too. I bought two new beds for my cat. The only way I could get him to sleep in them is by placing one of my blouses inside. They love smelling their human parents.

I'm sitting here watching this video, in my home in Romania, with my kitten that I've just adopted yesterday sleeping on my arm, debating whether I should buy her a bed or not. As new pet owners ,we all make the mistake of letting them sleep anywhere they like only to discover later on that the whole house is full of cat hair. Think of future comfort 4 both of you.
Why had I never thought about vertical location?!? My kitty, Aladdin, always sleeps slightly higher up (chairs and humans’ beds) but we always placed his bed on the floor. Obviously he won’t use it!
The part about location is really spot on in my experience. My cats refuse to use beds that are on the floor. Period. And sure enough, in the morning, they'll sleep in the beds on the east side of the house, while in the evening, they move over to the west side. We also live in a cold place, so our cats love self-heated beds. I even convinced the feral barn cat to use one!
Two weeks ago I got a kitten and yeah, she loves settling on the keyboard, ruining whatever I'm doing 😆It's super sweet though, she just loves to be around me 😻
Three weeks ago, I got my Mochi a new fluffy bed and for a week after that she never used it, in the end I put a t-shirt of mine on it that I had noticed she’d been sleeping on… and now she never leaves it! (figuratively speaking of course) Yesterday I tried the same trick with a new carrier and she went inside and stayed there for 30ish minutes! The scent thing really blew me away.
My cat had zero interest in the bed I got her over a year ago. Recently added a different blanket to it and spray it with a little cat nip. She uses it constantly now :)
Every spot in my home is a bed for my cat! 😂 He does sleep in his bed but more often than not he sleeps on my bed, the couch, or under one of the beds.
We got a bed for our new foundling, Holly. After she pointedly ignored it for weeks (we got lots of photos of her sleeping next to it, but never in it), my wife tossed it on the couch while cleaning, with the intent of giving it to cat-owning friends. Holly immediately jumped into it, curled up, fell asleep. So now, every night, before we go to bed, we put HER bed on the couch.
A few years ago, I'd added another bed for my cat Bella. (The new bed was round that had two different textures on the top & bottom of it - one side that was cooler for summer, the other side was warmer for winter). I thought Bella HATED this new bed as she ignored it for over 7 months 😬 Until winter came. This is undoubtedly her FAVOURITE winter bed 😀 She's been on this "donut" every day for the last 3 months! So sometimes, perseverance is the key. Don't give up too quickly 🤔 I think if I tried to move this bed now, I'd end up in the local Emergency Dept 😂She loves it that much 😉
As I'm watching this my cat is in her bed that she will ONLY use when it is flipped upside down making it more cave-like. Not even treats, catnip, or toys placed inside would get her to go inside to try it out, but this did the trick.
My youngest cat is named Bug, too! He loves my fuzzy microfleece blanket, whereas my older cat, Cricket, will choose whatever space on the bed doesn't have that blanket on it. :P He also loves to lay on plastic bags. But they both love the same square, plush cat bed, so go figure!
I bought a $40 plush cat bed with padded sides and velvet like covering. My chose to sleep in a spool of coaxial cable. I used the cat bed as a pillow for me.
My cats love my bed 1st, a cat carrier 2nd, 3rd the couch, an antique chair with a folded fleece throw on it, 4th my lift chair with a fleece throw on it, 5th the cat tower, which has 2 sleep beds on it, and they love the big flat dog bed.
Our cat (first cat ever, rescued this august) sleeps on our bed (only if its made) or on the couch. She refused beds and she hates the ones that are not completely flat. She also doesnt like fluffy materials and prefers more silklike textures. She also doesnt like to hide in something. The expensive cat tree was a miss - she is a horizontal scratcher and loves the cheap jute matt.
Knowing better, I broke down and bought an adorable pink Art Deco shell bed for my cat because I knew how adorable she'd look in it. After "seasoning" it by (me) sleeping with it for awhile, I put it out for her. She immediately jumped in and curled up happily. For no reason she stopped using it after a few days. I tried everything, to no avail. I was upset I had gone against my instincts and bought it in the first place. So now I use it as a DETERRENT and keep it on my white, expensive computer chair when I'm not on it (she loves this chair). Lemonade out of lemons I guess. 🤷♀️🤣😅
6:22 There's this big leather couch we have, that is next to the window that gets all the afternoon sun. It's not uncommon for 3 of our cats to be on there at once. Two on the back of the couch, and another on an arm. One of my cats absolutely loves sleeping on my sweaters, so I just keep a few old ones on his favourite shelves (he's very much a tree-cat.)
My cats usually sleep wherever I am. Right now, Koda (pictured) is on the arm of my chair and Siku is on the back of it. When I go to bed I'll sleep wherever they let me 😂 It's about that time, Koda is about to start telling me it's bed time. He really likes his routine. Siku is going to pout, because he likes being out in the livingroom. But he'll hurry in to beat Koda for the best cuddle spot.
Both of my cats love sleeping on my bed when it's cold. In summer one lays on the floor (won't go near any type of bed) and the other is claimed an old fleece blanket. I've given up on buying beds and make my own from my old blankets
My cats like to sleep on their own beds. They like to sleep on the clean and crispy cloths dried in the sun, so I just frequently change the sheets for them.
My cat has two beds so far, and she uses all of them (+ my bed) but ALSO sleeps on the cement floor. The first one is a DIY one where I used a canvas bag my cat likes scratching and biting and the other bed is the soft, fluffy one. She sleeps first on the floor, then when she wakes up she'll move to the scratchy bed, then to the soft bed, then to my bed. It's like a routine for her now lol.
I was having this exact same question about my kittens. They have no interest in their beds at all! One is a covered bed, pretty flat, and the other is a sort of cushion. They would rather sleep under chairs, on the couch, in our laps, in an overturned box, on top of the cat tower. Anything but these beds
I made a mistake with a rag rug that I wove- couldn’t sell it. My kitty loves it - and it sits under my weaving loom near a window. So it’s a funky texture.
I had the same problem. I bought my girl's beds I thought they would like and they never slept in them until I covered them with their favorite blankets. Now they do sleep in them but only when it's cooler. When it's hot they sleep on the basement floor or on top of boxes but I have no doubt they will return to the beds in the winter.
I bought a new cat bed two days ago, and my cat ignored it completely. Today I put one of his toys there, and a half an hour later it finally piqued his interest. Now he's napping in it, like it's been there all his life. 😁
I wash my cats new beds so they smell like my clean laundry and had to sleep on his favourite one so it smelt if me before he would use it. Now he loves it !
This is genius! My cats make every load of laundry their new nap spot. And like the pushover mama I am, I work around their naps. My kids taught them that I'm a very lenient mama and they take advantage whenever they can. Lol
This made me chuckle. Last Fall I finally purchased an outside house, hand made, blah, blah, blah for my friendly feral. She has one already outside and it's several years old, is listing to one side, has a leaky roof and I'm constantly scrubbing moss off it. Here you go Annie a nice log cabin to live in. She lays on top of it or underneath it, but never inside it. I put it in the same spot her other house is and I left the old house in place (maybe I should have moved it). Anyway it's been sitting out there for five months as an umbrella for her ... a very expensive umbrella but I love her and until her old house falls down she has the option of a log cabin or a listing, moss covered, leaking house that looks like it came from a Dr. Seuss book. June you are not alone.
lol my cat started using her bed when she was 9 years old. She only started using it once I decided to gift it to a friend. 😂 now she'll spend half the day there
When I upgraded to a king bed my queen bed got moved to what's technically a guest room, but realistically that bed now belongs to my cats. They have they're own comforter too, and I kept the bedframe specifically because Skitty tore up the underside of the boxspring so it's basically a hammock underneath and Baloo really likes sleeping there.
My favorite thing was finding out my cats love sherpa material! I have so many pullovers I don't wear that I just lay them on the spare bed (happens to also be in "their" room) and they LOVE THEM! They'll either lay on the sherpa or the sheets depending on the temperature.
One of my cats is very cautious and will only do things once he’s seen his brother do them. To speed up the process and to encourage interacting with a new thing, I use “bravery cookies”. For the cat trees, for first day or two, I’ll sprinkle treats and hide them around the cat tree. This gets both cats to pay attention and encourages Ramses (my brave boy) to really climb all over and explore. After that, Ramses is usually perfectly happy with the new structure and Radcliffe (my cautious boy) can see that Ramses is safe on it/ smell that Ramses hangs out there. I then start using positive reinforcement with Radcliffe by praising him whenever he interacts with the new structure and coaxing him to try new levels of it with cookies. He’s more of a tree dweller than Ramses and now loves to nap on the highest platform of their tree, but he needed encouragement from all beings in the house to gain that confidence
My two 1yr olds don't use their beds, they used it a few times as kittens and curled up together. But as they got older they were not interested.. I now have cardboard boxes all around the house. They love being together and are now sleeping on a recliner in lounge room. 1 on top 1 on the seating area. With their comfort blankets.
I moved in a new apartment 3 years ago and bought a 2,5 meters 6 level cat tree for my Luna. Placed it in front of 3 huge windows, giving her a great view...and she did not use it, even after i rubbed it in catnip :D She would only jump on that tree to get pets from me and never on her own. Knowing that she is more of a scaredy cat, i waited and waited for over 2 years. Then i had to accept my defeat and moved the tree in the dark hallway, because my plants could have used the window space more the my cat obviously. In a matter of days Luna started using the tree, she was scratching and sleeping on the first and second level. After 1 year, out of the blue she also started using the top levels of the tree. We made it !
I bought my cat one of those hide beds, where he can hide in for Christmas. And he JUST now is starting to use it! He loves it now! I put it on the floor, beside my dresser, so he can have peace & quiet to himself if I'm in my room. Though, I enjoy peace & quiet myself, lol. He has a bed up high on a 3 shelf thing I have, and he LOVES it. It's just a little Black Bed, from Pet Smart I got before I got him 7 months ago. It's a round deep bed that he can curl/cuddle up in with a blanket that I put inside because it can get cold here in NC. Where we live.
Yup I had a kitchen chair in my office for my cat to be able to sleep close by while I worked. To get the chair back I bought a cat tree at a similar height to replace it and she mostly just used it for the scratching posts for about a month. Now it’s her favorite spot, and she sleeps there all the time, even when I’m not there with her.
My sister put a bed in the kitchen since it’s near her sliding door there. Cloud loves the kitchen because it’s a common social area, he loves food, he loves the sliding door because it’s a huge cat TV for him. The bed was used a lot.
my cat stayed in a little cat cave all day at the shelter and was very shy - the shelter ppl described her as very shy, but a doll. So I bought her the exact same cave tree she used at the shelter.. It has 2 caves stacked on top of each other and comes up almost to my knees. After bringing her home, she stayed under the bed for like two weeks, occasionally exploring then going back. Now that she's comfortable, she has really came out of her shell and she almost never uses the cat cave. I think she just used it at the shelter bc it was the best hiding place and now that shes comfortable - she'd much rather sleep or lay around on the couch or bed or floor near us. That makes me happy and I understand why she used the cave - bc she wasn't comfortable at the shelter. Her old owner passed away so she was probably like, where am i? where's my house? where's my owner? & she hid away. Im so happy I can provide her with all the love in the worlddd. She even cuddles with me at night and lets me put my arm over her and she just stays there all night. I even woke up before and her head was sharing my pillow.
I had the same problem, but I found out my 2 lovelies prefer the texture of a towel so now I just cover the beds with a towel and they are happy campers.
I was just listening to the Evan and Katelyn podcast and they talked about how Katelyn turned the hallway closet of her first apartment into a kitty castle. I think that’s a pretty creative way to give your cat a dedicated space they can own even if you don’t have a lot of space.

She said no & walked over to the closet. Made her bed in there and he later, 3 fur babies were on her bed. She still won't let me see them though
I had the same problem. Finally he likes them on a chair or coach where he can see you and feels he's part of the family. I don't have small kids though.

I had an old cat who did that. He was getting on for 15 and he insisted on sleeping on the doormat by the cat flap, cold and hard. I think he was guarding the house. Eventually I persuaded him to sleep on a faux sheepskin cat bed with reflective foil inside, to which I sneakily added a folded towel to make it slightly less hard. He loved that bed until he died.

One of my cat’s is the same way! I throw a plush blanket over my bed pillows to keep her OFF them.
I used catnip to attract my cats to their bed, they sleep in it most of the time. But at the end of the day, cats are free creatures they’re going to sleep where they please.
Me too. I ordered some catnip spray after my cat was ignoring his new bed. Once I give it a spray and walk away, he'll be in there for the next few hours and he's getting used to it without the spray.

Another reason: smells like it doesn't belong. If you have a good relationship with your cat, place a dirty, sweaty t-shirt (yours) in each bed. This says that yes, this bed belongs to us, come and own it with me.
Another reason - temperature. My cats love all of their different beds in winter and early spring/late autumn but when it gets really hot they sleep on the floor, in a transport box or on top of the table. It maybe that the cat is too hot for sleeping in a warm cuddly bed currently and it will love it later.

@@atropabelladonna Very true. I have a cat bed under a coffee table in the livingroom that is ignored until wintertime. There is a heat pipe right under the floor there and one of my cats has claimed it as his favorite place to sleep in the cold months. In the summer it is not touched.
I was going to comment something similar. Our cats rarely want separate space - even then they want to be in the same room.. If the bed doesn't even slightly smell like us, they won't use it. Sometimes that simply means leaving out out for 1-2 weeks and spraying catnip. Other times I have to put one of OUR scent soakers into it.
The sniffer test. I greet every cat with my index finger for a sniff. It's what they like to do. That and claiming spots by rank and role.
When I looked for a cat tree I was absolutely shocked to discover how expensive they were for how simple the used materials were. I ended up building a super simple cat tree that was 10x’s sturdier and 100x’s less expensive than any cat tree I’ve ever seen in stores. My cat loves it cuz she’s eye level with me at the top and it was only $15.
KatieKat I’ve found that Amarkat has very low prices compared to other cat tree makers through Amazon. I have a very very tall one and it was only about $60!
I built a cat tree too because I have a huge cat that kept jumping at store cat trees from weird angles until they'd break. Mine would have been cheaper had I not used the need to build a cat tree for my cat as an excuse to buy a bunch of power tools I didn't really need to build the cat tree. I built a cat tree so sturdy that even I can sit on it and with bigger platforms so my gigantic cat can stretch out on it.
Who Ever yeah luckily I was able to use my dad’s tools, plus I had a friend who had left over carpeting I used to cover the different layers. I’m not a builder by any means but I figured I could build something sturdier that I felt less anxious about my extremely rowdy cat jumping all over
@@katiekat2074 I've built lots of things before but I wanted some new power tools, which is the only reason it cost more money. My cats had broken several conventional cat trees and the last straw was when they bent the last one in half and one of the levels almost busted the sliding glass door! So I built them an 8 ft tall one with 4 x 4 pillars and half inch thick plywood for the levels. I just pulled the entire design out of my ass basically.

I would recommend putting the cats favorite person's scent on the new bed or cat tree. Works for me! Took me a while to figure that out. If it smells like me, Kitty will sleep there. I am her favorite piece of furniture!

Since I sew my cat beds on my own, my cats do use them because of my smell on it, but my cats have trouble with sharing. Once other cats used them, none of the cats want them anymore. 😭
My cat's favorite "bed" at the moment is a foam bed topper that I threw in the closet. It looped over itself like a wave, and the Baby sleeps inside every night. I don't have the heart to throw it out now.

Idk, it doesn't seem like a problem, unless it's effecting you? I know some people like their houses to be really clean and neat.

😂 I rent an apartment. My cat poked a nice hole in the bedroom blinds. This is a fairly new place for us, moved in last year November, and we never had the horizontal blinds before, only the wide, vertical.
Bathroom he loves the tub so I got him something that cooler and loved it it was flat and not much fluff XD
I bought 2 new beds when I got my kitties, and I kept finding one of them at the bottom of the stairs every morning. Thinking they just knocked it down while playing, I would bring it back up everyday. Finally one night I actually saw the boy cat dragging the bed down the stairs. I wasn't sure if he didn't want his sister sleeping next to him or what the deal was, but since he worked so hard to move it, I left it there. When I got home from work that day, he had dragged an old bed from the previous cat out of the spare bedroom and left it next to his at the top of the stairs. They sleep there side by side ever since.
Now if I buy a new bed I leave it in the bag by the door. If it is approved, he drags it away somewhere. Unapproved beds stay right there bagged and ready for donation.
Getting a cat bed was the best thing ever! Before my cat would sleep on the bed with me, but I’m a toss and turner. So my cat would wake me up between 3-4am probably because he could never go into a deep sleep because of me. And because he woke me up so early, I would feel even less rested.
Now he’s got his own bed on my dresser with a baby blanket in there, and he sleeps throughout the night until 6-8am every day.
I have just the opposite cat. Once she finds a spot in bed to sleep she becomes an immovable stone. I also toss around and I've just learned to work around her. Many a times I've accidently kicked her not knowing where she was; she doesn't even twitch. Then I need to get up but she's still fast asleep and has me pinned 😂.

My cat sleeps on my sons bed during day but chooses other favourite places to rest at night. I have never encouraged my much loved cat into my bedroom at night because I get asthma and thought best to avoid. Occasionally he does get up and walk round my bed and enjoys it but I’m mean and gently put him on floor. He hates soft cat beds but loves expensive leather chair that’s now his space no one sits onit as we know it’s his 😊

Been buying beds every couple of years for the past eleven I’ve had my guy Lil’Bit(& no he’s not such a Lil’Bit anymore lol!). Just in case with age he’s looking for a little more comfy but no... he prefers a regular ole towel like “bath mat” & it’s fine by me only they can be a challenge to find(!) fortunately for me (& him) I’ve lots of friends who travel and don’t mind “accidentally” packing the one from their hotel for the sake of my guy, lol! 😹TTFN y’all ✌🏼🙏🏼🧿🧼🖐🏼
They can be if you’re at all handy 😉 There are specs, diagrams, designs, etc. online for DIY. They’re also VERY cost effective. You can go in the woods and find fallen branches to use for free! There are details on preparing and finishing the wood once you get it home. Good luck!!!
I made my own cat tree because I have a really tall cat who likes to jump onto cat trees at an angle. None of the store bought ones held up to that for very long so I built one that's strong enough for me to even sit on it. I also made the platforms bigger because my cat is huge. He was really happy with it because it let him actually stretch out on the cat tree which he could never do on the regular sized cat tree platforms.

As soon as I enter the bedroom all 5 follow me in there and circle me like great whites. Then, three will proceed to sit on the bed as i try to make it. Like another commenter said I make the bed around them and tweak it as later as they leave and follow me around.
It took our dog 5 years to start using his bed, but then she loved it and we had to replace it several times in the ten years after.

My cat just loooooooooves soft textures: faux fur, fleece, flannelette, cotton, wool and even the cushions of my wheelchair... I think she has 5 different places she sleeps and on my bed or any soft texture that has my scent on it
SlowPonk my old cat Felix loves to sleep in my wheelchair in my room, the cusion was so full with cat hair, that I had problems to clean all the cat hair. Sadly je passed away two years ago and my new cat Lulu don‘t want to sleep in the Wheelchair. He linkes to sleep on the bottom or on me! I know from other friends that their cat linkes to sleep in the Wheelchair too!

My girl’s favorite bed is an old, flat, worn out pillow. I’ve tried all kinds of beds but that old pillow has won every time! I have some cheep pillow cases I change out every now and then to keep the fluff from getting out of control.
When you get a cat bed always keep the receipt and check the return policy because every cat is different and you never know for sure what they will like.
I don't know about that... Would *You* like to buy a bed for your cat, that another cat has already used, and been returned? Your cat could react negatively to the scent of another animal; plus there's the potential problem of fleas and other parasites getting transmitted.
A lot of stores won’t let u return pet products like that bc of the possibility (and not that unlikely) of transmitting pests. They don’t know if ur cat has fleas or not. Even if u just took the tag off and it’s never been used, they often won’t let u return it

When I first got my cat I don't think he was used to having a bed. It took him a long time to even try it but now he loves sleeping on blankets and beds.
I had a baby in May and my kitty looooves the boppy pillow, the baby swing, the stroller, plus the baby hates the Moses basket we got but the cat spends hours in it every day! It’s hers now, I’m glad we splurged on a cute one because it’s never leaving the house if my kitty keeps loving it so much. :)

my 17 year old calico lucy has multiple "beds", a cat bed i bought, the sofa, and my computer chair. lately she's wanted the chair (which makes sitting at my computer a little difficult). i thought maybe she liked the cushion on the chair,so i moved it (with her on top of it) to the sofa. best of both worlds,right? no, she gets up and goes back to the chair. she is generous enough to let me have half the seat,but she wont relinquish it completely.luckily during the afternoon the sun comes in my window,and with a little coaxing she'll use the cat bed to soak up the sun while she sleeps. of course,as the sun moves across the floor i have to move the bed as well otherwise she sits up in it and meows until i do. she has me well trained.

June might also consider tossing a used t-shirt onto the cat beds. (Used as in 'worn for the day.') So it'll have her scent on it.

My Oliver adores his bed :) of course at first, when I adopted him, his previous owner had left him a hand-knitted cat bed when they surrendered him. I brought it home with him, and he absolutely refused to go anywhere near it, and seemed noticeably upset by the fact it was even there. However, I also noticed that he began to only sleep on this one fleece slipper I had. Nothing else (other than on me). He loved to knead it and just lay on it, so I found a big fleece cat bed and omg he was in heaven.
I guess I’m lucky. Because all I need to do for Dillion is to add a dirty sweaty piece of laundry to the location. Instant bed.

Why had I never thought about vertical location?!? My kitty, Aladdin, always sleeps slightly higher up (chairs and humans’ beds) but we always placed his bed on the floor. Obviously he won’t use it!

Most people don’t like beds directly at floor level so guess some cats don’t either.
The part about location is really spot on in my experience. My cats refuse to use beds that are on the floor. Period. And sure enough, in the morning, they'll sleep in the beds on the east side of the house, while in the evening, they move over to the west side. We also live in a cold place, so our cats love self-heated beds. I even convinced the feral barn cat to use one!

Three weeks ago, I got my Mochi a new fluffy bed and for a week after that she never used it, in the end I put a t-shirt of mine on it that I had noticed she’d been sleeping on… and now she never leaves it! (figuratively speaking of course) Yesterday I tried the same trick with a new carrier and she went inside and stayed there for 30ish minutes! The scent thing really blew me away.
My cat had zero interest in the bed I got her over a year ago. Recently added a different blanket to it and spray it with a little cat nip. She uses it constantly now :)

Every spot in my home is a bed for my cat! 😂 He does sleep in his bed but more often than not he sleeps on my bed, the couch, or under one of the beds.
We got a bed for our new foundling, Holly. After she pointedly ignored it for weeks (we got lots of photos of her sleeping next to it, but never in it), my wife tossed it on the couch while cleaning, with the intent of giving it to cat-owning friends. Holly immediately jumped into it, curled up, fell asleep. So now, every night, before we go to bed, we put HER bed on the couch.
A few years ago, I'd added another bed for my cat Bella. (The new bed was round that had two different textures on the top & bottom of it - one side that was cooler for summer, the other side was warmer for winter). I thought Bella HATED this new bed as she ignored it for over 7 months 😬 Until winter came. This is undoubtedly her FAVOURITE winter bed 😀 She's been on this "donut" every day for the last 3 months! So sometimes, perseverance is the key. Don't give up too quickly 🤔 I think if I tried to move this bed now, I'd end up in the local Emergency Dept 😂She loves it that much 😉
Another trick, after working outside, when your sweaty, lay your back on the kitty bed. This. soaks your scent into the cat bed.

As I'm watching this my cat is in her bed that she will ONLY use when it is flipped upside down making it more cave-like. Not even treats, catnip, or toys placed inside would get her to go inside to try it out, but this did the trick.

He loves my fuzzy microfleece blanket, whereas my older cat, Cricket, will choose whatever space on the bed doesn't have that blanket on it. :P He also loves to lay on plastic bags. But they both love the same square, plush cat bed, so go figure!
I bought a $40 plush cat bed with padded sides and velvet like covering. My chose to sleep in a spool of coaxial cable. I used the cat bed as a pillow for me.

Our cat (first cat ever, rescued this august) sleeps on our bed (only if its made) or on the couch. She refused beds and she hates the ones that are not completely flat. She also doesnt like fluffy materials and prefers more silklike textures. She also doesnt like to hide in something. The expensive cat tree was a miss - she is a horizontal scratcher and loves the cheap jute matt.
I got 2 cat beds and set up so many "comfy/cozy" spots for him, and he prefers sleeping on the flat, cold, tile floor 😂

Knowing better, I broke down and bought an adorable pink Art Deco shell bed for my cat because I knew how adorable she'd look in it.
After "seasoning" it by (me) sleeping with it for awhile, I put it out for her.
She immediately jumped in and curled up happily.
For no reason she stopped using it after a few days. I tried everything, to no avail. I was upset I had gone against my instincts and bought it in the first place.
So now I use it as a DETERRENT and keep it on my white, expensive computer chair when I'm not on it (she loves this chair).

6:22 There's this big leather couch we have, that is next to the window that gets all the afternoon sun. It's not uncommon for 3 of our cats to be on there at once. Two on the back of the couch, and another on an arm.
One of my cats absolutely loves sleeping on my sweaters, so I just keep a few old ones on his favourite shelves (he's very much a tree-cat.)
My cats usually sleep wherever I am. Right now, Koda (pictured) is on the arm of my chair and Siku is on the back of it. When I go to bed I'll sleep wherever they let me 😂 It's about that time, Koda is about to start telling me it's bed time. He really likes his routine. Siku is going to pout, because he likes being out in the livingroom. But he'll hurry in to beat Koda for the best cuddle spot.

My cat has two beds so far, and she uses all of them (+ my bed) but ALSO sleeps on the cement floor. The first one is a DIY one where I used a canvas bag my cat likes scratching and biting and the other bed is the soft, fluffy one. She sleeps first on the floor, then when she wakes up she'll move to the scratchy bed, then to the soft bed, then to my bed. It's like a routine for her now lol.
I was having this exact same question about my kittens. They have no interest in their beds at all! One is a covered bed, pretty flat, and the other is a sort of cushion. They would rather sleep under chairs, on the couch, in our laps, in an overturned box, on top of the cat tower. Anything but these beds
I made a mistake with a rag rug that I wove- couldn’t sell it. My kitty loves it - and it sits under my weaving loom near a window. So it’s a funky texture.

I had the same problem. I bought my girl's beds I thought they would like and they never slept in them until I covered them with their favorite blankets. Now they do sleep in them but only when it's cooler. When it's hot they sleep on the basement floor or on top of boxes but I have no doubt they will return to the beds in the winter.
I put a bottle of hot water in their bed at night... they love it and sleep near me but not interfering with my sleeping dinamics...
I bought a new cat bed two days ago, and my cat ignored it completely. Today I put one of his toys there, and a half an hour later it finally piqued his interest. Now he's napping in it, like it's been there all his life. 😁
My cat never uses his cat bed.When he feels like it my bed become his bed and i will sleep on the floor

I got this one bed for my cat shortly after I got her. It took her 6 months to actually give it a chance and now she uses it all the time.
I wash my cats new beds so they smell like my clean laundry and had to sleep on his favourite one so it smelt if me before he would use it. Now he loves it !
This is genius! My cats make every load of laundry their new nap spot. And like the pushover mama I am, I work around their naps. My kids taught them that I'm a very lenient mama and they take advantage whenever they can. Lol
This made me chuckle. Last Fall I finally purchased an outside house, hand made, blah, blah, blah for my friendly feral. She has one already outside and it's several years old, is listing to one side, has a leaky roof and I'm constantly scrubbing moss off it. Here you go Annie a nice log cabin to live in. She lays on top of it or underneath it, but never inside it. I put it in the same spot her other house is and I left the old house in place (maybe I should have moved it). Anyway it's been sitting out there for five months as an umbrella for her ... a very expensive umbrella but I love her and until her old house falls down she has the option of a log cabin or a listing, moss covered, leaking house that looks like it came from a Dr. Seuss book. June you are not alone.
lol my cat started using her bed when she was 9 years old.
She only started using it once I decided to gift it to a friend. 😂
now she'll spend half the day there
My kittens favourite bed are the bathroom tiles and the wet mop. Cleaning him after he lies down on the mop is a huge task.
When I upgraded to a king bed my queen bed got moved to what's technically a guest room, but realistically that bed now belongs to my cats. They have they're own comforter too, and I kept the bedframe specifically because Skitty tore up the underside of the boxspring so it's basically a hammock underneath and Baloo really likes sleeping there.
My favorite thing was finding out my cats love sherpa material! I have so many pullovers I don't wear that I just lay them on the spare bed (happens to also be in "their" room) and they LOVE THEM! They'll either lay on the sherpa or the sheets depending on the temperature.
One of my cats is very cautious and will only do things once he’s seen his brother do them. To speed up the process and to encourage interacting with a new thing, I use “bravery cookies”. For the cat trees, for first day or two, I’ll sprinkle treats and hide them around the cat tree. This gets both cats to pay attention and encourages Ramses (my brave boy) to really climb all over and explore. After that, Ramses is usually perfectly happy with the new structure and Radcliffe (my cautious boy) can see that Ramses is safe on it/ smell that Ramses hangs out there. I then start using positive reinforcement with Radcliffe by praising him whenever he interacts with the new structure and coaxing him to try new levels of it with cookies. He’s more of a tree dweller than Ramses and now loves to nap on the highest platform of their tree, but he needed encouragement from all beings in the house to gain that confidence

My two 1yr olds don't use their beds, they used it a few times as kittens and curled up together. But as they got older they were not interested.. I now have cardboard boxes all around the house. They love being together and are now sleeping on a recliner in lounge room. 1 on top 1 on the seating area. With their comfort blankets.
I moved in a new apartment 3 years ago and bought a 2,5 meters 6 level cat tree for my Luna. Placed it in front of 3 huge windows, giving her a great view...and she did not use it, even after i rubbed it in catnip :D
She would only jump on that tree to get pets from me and never on her own. Knowing that she is more of a scaredy cat, i waited and waited for over 2 years. Then i had to accept my defeat and moved the tree in the dark hallway, because my plants could have used the window space more the my cat obviously.
In a matter of days Luna started using the tree, she was scratching and sleeping on the first and second level. After 1 year, out of the blue she also started using the top levels of the tree.
We made it !
She apparently felt insecure in front of the 3 big windows.
I bought my cat one of those hide beds, where he can hide in for Christmas. And he JUST now is starting to use it! He loves it now! I put it on the floor, beside my dresser, so he can have peace & quiet to himself if I'm in my room. Though, I enjoy peace & quiet myself, lol. He has a bed up high on a 3 shelf thing I have, and he LOVES it. It's just a little Black Bed, from Pet Smart I got before I got him 7 months ago. It's a round deep bed that he can curl/cuddle up in with a blanket that I put inside because it can get cold here in NC. Where we live.
My cat used to love sleeping on my printer box, she sadly passed away 3 weeks ago. The house feels empty and very quiet 😭😭

Yup I had a kitchen chair in my office for my cat to be able to sleep close by while I worked. To get the chair back I bought a cat tree at a similar height to replace it and she mostly just used it for the scratching posts for about a month. Now it’s her favorite spot, and she sleeps there all the time, even when I’m not there with her.
Great advice. Learn cat lessons over many, many years.
My sister put a bed in the kitchen since it’s near her sliding door there. Cloud loves the kitchen because it’s a common social area, he loves food, he loves the sliding door because it’s a huge cat TV for him. The bed was used a lot.
my cat stayed in a little cat cave all day at the shelter and was very shy - the shelter ppl described her as very shy, but a doll. So I bought her the exact same cave tree she used at the shelter.. It has 2 caves stacked on top of each other and comes up almost to my knees. After bringing her home, she stayed under the bed for like two weeks, occasionally exploring then going back. Now that she's comfortable, she has really came out of her shell and she almost never uses the cat cave. I think she just used it at the shelter bc it was the best hiding place and now that shes comfortable - she'd much rather sleep or lay around on the couch or bed or floor near us. That makes me happy and I understand why she used the cave - bc she wasn't comfortable at the shelter. Her old owner passed away so she was probably like, where am i? where's my house? where's my owner? & she hid away. Im so happy I can provide her with all the love in the worlddd. She even cuddles with me at night and lets me put my arm over her and she just stays there all night. I even woke up before and her head was sharing my pillow.
I bought a bird feeder to put in the window where the cat tree is next to. Works like a charm! This week I am starting the super highway!

I had the same problem, but I found out my 2 lovelies prefer the texture of a towel so now I just cover the beds with a towel and they are happy campers.
I was just listening to the Evan and Katelyn podcast and they talked about how Katelyn turned the hallway closet of her first apartment into a kitty castle. I think that’s a pretty creative way to give your cat a dedicated space they can own even if you don’t have a lot of space.
My youngest just had her kittens in mine. I tried setting up a space in a corner of my bedroom the day she kept pulling me upstairs (finally figured out she was in labor). She said no & walked over to the closet. Made her bed in there and he later, 3 fur babies were on her bed. She still won't let me see them though
I had the same problem. Finally he likes them on a chair or coach where he can see you and feels he's part of the family. I don't have small kids though.
