Fundi Nkuta The US has never been the best. It's just something that we are told from the time we are a child. The schools teach you that. Politicians teach you that. When I was in college I took a course called abnormal sociology. You have to take regular sociology first. Everyone should have to take those two classes because they will see the world in a completely different way. The Scandinavian countries particularly Sweden have been known as the best county for many decades. I am American and I am grateful to get the things that American has to offer but I also know that America is not the best. Did you know that our school system was also the worst? Europeans finish school at around age 16 and when they graduate they will be so much more educated then then in America. In America lots of classes are not mandatory and are "dumbed down" for kids to pass. In other countries it is mandatory to graduate knowing calculus, chemistry, physics. All classes that in America that are not mandatory. The list of differences in the school systems go on. Social issues we are way behind. I could talk about this forever.

I want to add that here in Canada the woman and the man get 6 months each and the father can give his wife his, allowing her to stay home for a year. The pay is roughly 66% of your full salary. We do not pay outrageous tax either.

    • @nowheretosit
      @nowheretosit 8 лет назад +10

First, all the Canadian workers are paid a lower salary. That's a given. The employer gets less work from the average worker because some of them take time off and still get paid. So to compensate everyone gets paid less.
Second, everyone ends up paying taxes to run the bureaucracy to create, maintain and enforce these arbitrary government rules. That's also a given.
Throw in the fact that the whole system is involuntary and based on force and violence to implement and you can see it's a lose-lose situation for everyone.

Ben Jamin Not really. In a free market that simply could not happen. Of course Canada isn't a free market. Only through the magic of government regulation and monopolies could something like that happen.

    • @delftblue

“Hard4Jesus” is it? I said what I said. I’m sorry you have a limited understanding of 1. who actually does hard work and 2. what happens to the taxes collected from the American workforce. The cost of not having paid parental leave in America reduces our earning capacity as a whole. The American people pay enough in taxes while multiple companies that billions of revenue dollars per year pay little to no taxes/ are heavily subsidized by the government. My cognitive abilities weren’t retarded during development you see, I developed like humans are supposed to, with common sense, empathy, and understanding for others. As someone who is “HardforJesus”, I’d think you’d see that, but clearly not.
America doesn’t have a revenue problem. You believe that this is not worthy of your tax dollars because you’ve been taught to think so, when in fact, the money is already coming in, and we (nationally) choose to spend it on other things. That is the truth. The fact that someone is willing to give even more of her hard earned money to prevention is gracious and I choose to support that though it is not necessary, because America makes enough to take care of its people. It’s not a surprise that social security (which 65 million Americans rely on) and public education (which all Americans rely on) is failing, now we see the “family values” side of our society crumbling. But you keep harassing people on the internet for caring.

TheBluesytone I don't think you have any idea how much harm and suffering this concept brings. In America, we have conclusively found that when society bears the cost of raising children, it takes away the consequences of people's action.
Young women sleep around, making babies with multiple fathers. Neither the mothers or the fathers care because society is forced to absorb the costs. In fact, the women view child birth as a cash cow because they get more money for every child. So they have lot's of children they don't really want. The children grow up unloved, in broken families with no fathers and their likelihood of incarceration is like doubled.
It is critical not to take away the negative consequences of people's actions.

Yes Germany has longer maternity leave. But lack of appropriate child care makes it almost impossible for women to return to the work force full time. Add to it German tax policy that makes it economically unprofitable to work for married women (Ehegattensplitting). And at the end is situation no better then in the US. It is a bad idea to have children in Germany for women. That is why the birth rate is so low.

@@katlinoneill2497 The only people who are forced to have children, are male victims of reverse rape. As long as abortion is legal, women have superior control over whether they become pregnant (compared to the control men have), and have 100% control over whether they remain pregnant. It may take two to tango, but remember, Roe v Wade says it is WHO'S body WHO'S choice? It is not something that is mandatory for you to do, and it is not essential for your survival.
Having children is something you do by choice, for fulfillment in your life. And it is something that is not of any immediate economic value to people outside your family. That is why it is comparable to a hobby.

@@carultch I disagree. At first, I was going to agree that you had a point that children may not offer an *immediate* economic benefit to society, but after thinking about even that point for two more minutes, I disagree. Children are a HUGE consumer market for companies (link with many sources: globalissues.org/article/237/children-as-consumers), with billions of money spent on advertisement. They also provide 100% of the audience/consumers of infant & child healthcare, daycare, private or charter schooling, etc. So no - there is pretty much an immediate economic benefit for children to exist. I'd actually argue that a child has a greater *economic* value to those outside its family than those in its family (because it's not like a baby or a child make money for that family; in fact, they cost money - so it's a negative economic value, strictly speaking, to have a child and then support that child until that child can become a self-sustaining individual).
Also, overall, it's imperative for a society to maintain its population if it wants to maintain or grow its economy. Google "economic dangers of population decline" (specifically, Russia, Japan, and Germany I believe have the worst cases of an ageing population) for sources and evidence of this (there's simply too much for me to put in a RUclips comment). A government that cares about its economy should have a vested interest in making sure people can reproduce. That's why it's nonsensical and outright destructive to view having children as a hobby. Children (who then become working and culture-producing adults) are the literal future of a society. If there are no (or too few) children, within a few decades (literally only just *decades*), there will be no more of that society. It will cease to exist.

There is no more middle class which strangle families and in turn strangled society. When few have jobs eveyone pays. You don't pay one way you will pay the other. Every man for himself nobody wins. I used to look down on welfare people not anymore. Most don't want to be on welfare but when starting from zero and you do get a job welfare taken away. Your paycheck is less than welfare what do they do quit and go right back to welfare. I wish people would stop talking about having children as being a choice. It's a societal investment in the future. When employers (and governments) refuse to give parental leave, they are essentially saying: "We don't care about future generations, because it's not benefiting us now." My response is: "When you're an elderly person in need of medical care, which young doctor will take care of you when you firmly believe that having and raising children is a personal choice that you refuse to contribute to?"

parap Employers aren't moral. I think a better argument is I work for you and getting pregnant is a biological norm that should not strip me of my rights to provide for my child. Now there should also be a compromise perhaps but it should definitely be granted to parents. I know there is a way America can do parental leave for up to a year.

I am from Europe and my company told me to take maternity leave whenever I want and that I can also have a second child imidiately if I want to which means I wouldnt be able to work for a another 2 years. The reason of that is that my employee doesent pay my maternity leave. It is paid from my health insurance and NO ONE ever complained about it. Because grown up people understand importance of having a family, a child and good family relationships and grown ups are the ones that are contributing to the health care system. Even 'millenials' doesent have anything against it even tho they are often called 'selfish'.
America is looking at the Europe without considering who acctualy pays all those leaves. My company only pays a first few days of my sick leave, if I stay longer it is again paid from my health insurence. It is less then my paycheck, but atleast I dont have to go to work with cancer.
But America has deeper problems such as health insurence and that is why everybody is looking at the companies.

You as a company owner owe everything to your employees and they owe nothing to you. Without them, you would only be able to make as much profit as you could produce yourself. Every employee that you have is working for you at a loss, as is every employee in the world. In order for you to turn a profit and have employees, you have to pay those employees less than they are worth. If you make an item that costs $2 in materials and overhead, $2 in manpower, and you sell it for $10, that is $6 that you profited off the back of your employee. That is $6 that you would not have without that employee. If it is only possible to make 100 per day per person, every employee you have is making you a profit of $600 per day while you only shell out $200. And that is not all going to their take home pay, because some of that is to health insurance, and other costs related to labor. Your employee is only making $120 per day. And you know as well as I that you get a discount on materials for buying in bulk, so if you lost all your employees, your material costs would go up. But, keep trying to fool the masses with the entire "without business, you all would die" rhetoric. That is why you all spend so much money making sure that low income children remain uneducated. You don't want all those people to learn that a business only exists at the mercy of its employees. If everyone walked out of Walmart tomorrow on strike for one week, the employees would only lose a week of pay, several hundred dollars at most. Walmart would have to shut down for that week and would lose millions.

In Sweden we have parental leave for 480 days. 90 of days are reserved for the dad and the rest can be split between the parents as they want. Talking about maternity leave and not paternity leave seems so...sexist? Don't both parents deserve to be involved and take their part in taking care of the children? Using my own parents as an example, my dad took Mondays and Fridays while my mom stayed home the other days. Nice to see that at least some of the people interviewed brought up equality and gender neutrality.

    • @veanell
      @veanell 8 лет назад +38

+Gnuchan Due to the fact that maternity leave is pretty much non-existent in the US, I don't feel it is sexist to not address paternity leave. Women need time off before and after birth for medical reasons outside of the care of the child, whereas fathers would only need off to care for their child and the mother. The limitations placed on women stress the need for the US to have better maternity leave. Then we can address paternity leave. I can tell you that if we get better maternity leave, that paternity leave will be easy to achieve.

As for a metaphor imagine the U.S. being such a prosperous country overall, and personified as a hero in a flood, grabs onto a nation in need, then another, then another, before you know it the U.S. is drowning ( just as much in need) as those other countries when could've stopped whilst ahead.

I understand your firearm argument however, the problem is that men would 'dare' or 'consider' committing such a crime in the first place. Even when a woman (or a man) fights off an attacker they probably would still have mental trauma from the experience. Also, according to the law, is it 'reasonable' self-defence for one to shoot someone for trying to rape them. And if they did can it be proven that was the intention of the attacker. If the attacker is killed then as they were not trying to kill the victim - then deadly force may be argued to be excessive => victim being punished for defending themselves.
The culture should be not only potential victims trying to protect themselves as that creates a life of excessive stress and anxiety but also potential attackers to be educated and their values 'fixed'. After all, men don't try to rape women/men because they want sex but because they probably think they are entitled to having sex with whoever regardless of that person's opinion; that the victim is not a individual they are an 'object' or just 2nd rate citizen; that 'no' means 'yes' really.... (this got very long...)

    • @pvtbuddie
      @pvtbuddie 6 лет назад +2

      +Mariana :
Your concern about proving the intentions of the deceased is where the legal concept of innocent until proven guilty comes in. The survivor, one who is, or could be, in court = who is _now_ in danger of her or his future and life - is legally presumed to be innocent. Their story is presumed to be true, unless there is real contradictory evidence before prosecution, and real proof before conviction. Yes, there are risks to that, too, but it is better that the risk side towards an innocent person becoming the victim of their individual neighbors than an individual becoming a victim of all their neighbors, of all of society teamed together, as the case would rightly read: "The People of Name The Place vs. Surviving Combatant". Stand your ground laws will further ensure this protection.
Your concern about education is equally valid, and people do need to be educated. But, first, why should another person possibly be psychologically maimed because their attacker who sees them trying to get away, who most often hears them screaming No!, doesn't _fully_ understand? Second, and equally important, there are some people who may know exactly how harmful a thing is, but will still do that thing to others. Some people already know "better than", and we now need them to learn they'd better not!

Okay...then how about we compare it to every single country in the world that does have paid leave in the world, and compare that to america?
there re 195 countries in the world, out of all of them, there have been 185 that have been extensively studied, only 2 other countries and the united states, have some form of maternity leave. Of those 3 countries, United states is the only one that is a first world country and has no maternity care.
Over 50 of the countries that do have it, have 6 months or more in paid maternity leave. Some of these countries include Canada, Norway, Finland, Belgium, Estonia, Germany, etc, etc.
Now... are you saying that america, has more than 50 countries worth of people? How about 192? must be pretty difficult as america has only about 327.2 million people, and there are about 7 billion people on earth. it seems to me that's under 5% of the human population.
In short, the math shows that America can afford maternity leave, it can work and would improve the lives of all americans... but law makers have not because it does not care for its people.

The US government passed a law declaring Drs didnt have to disclose to pregnant mothers if their children could be born with a fatal illness or physical disability (which we all know is astronomically expensive) but declared mental and physical disabilities a preexisting condition so equipment and treatment doesn't have to be covered by insurance,, most likely bc theyre against abortions (what a lot of women do bc they cant afford a baby) , they dont want to help cover birth control which women get bc they cant afford to have a baby, are trying to make abortions illegal, wont let you tie your tubes until youve had so many children or have reached a certain age in fear of being sued for regretting your choice in the future, Day care is expensive and mostly unsafe especially for a 6 week old baby as many deaths and abuse from the care takers has been reported. The first 5 years of a childs life are the most crucial to raising a strong minded, confident, smart, healthy child. It impacts and determines their learning capabilities, social/behavioral skills . A strong connection with a loving mother is vital for them to thrive. apart from the morality of this babys are necessary for our growth as a country , they too will become tax payers, soldiers and working citizens. Also women are 44% of the work force so basically you need working moms regardless. Childhood should be an investment , its the most sacred and meaningful part of our entire lives and inevitable. Every American pays taxes for something they dont even use. Homeowners pay school taxes even if they have no children in school, young adults pay taxes that help the elderly and disabled, we pay city taxes that maintain roads, trash collection , sewage ,education, etc etc etc. To top it all off its been proven to help our economy and has had no negative impacts so what exactly is the argument?

Look, officially around 15% of people in the US live in poverty, and if even just 15% of women didn't have children, that would hugely affect the birth rate. But that's discounting the fact that young people are on average poorer and have worse jobs. Then account for the fact that wages are stagnant and that many of these people will never be much richer. Also, in this model of yours, people who are not poor, but would be made poor by having a small number of children, also shouldn't have then.
Pretty soon as much as 50% of the population doesn't get to reproduce. In a modern, RICH, developed country, I would say, it would be doing a huge disservice to the continuation of the species not to offer common sense protections and perks (paid maternity leave, free kindergarten and decent public schools, etc.) to people who are willing to put themselves through the inconvenience of having children. But somehow the Americans are AGAIN the only country that needs convincing.

I try not to look too much into conspiracy theories or that sort of thing. When you combine lack of maternity leave, unaffordable healthcare, school systems taught on a federally mandated linear model, tax breaks for high earners, and tax brackets in general (which operate on a basis of income: if you have an annual salary of between say $70,000 and $90,000, you pay the *same* percentage of taxes.. which is why if you get a raise you may end up paying more in taxes, making your paycheck less than your previous earned income). Not to mention the new tax bill, the lack of school funding, privatizing roads and putting in red light cameras -- which effectively remove a city's ability to control these previously public services, often rendering the streets not being serviced and parking fees becoming over inflated, not to mention your inability to contest a red-light ticket in court). THEN add all of this to an increasingly untrained police force, body cameras, cameras on street corners, restrictions on internet content and throttled speed. Tariffs on imports from our allies... the administration of passionate military and FBI career politicians being removed from office. Our economy is going to take decades to recover. College grants being throttled, medical insurance being removed, federal assistance being removed. The middle and lower classes are going to become even less likely to succeed. There *will* be fewer doctors, lawyers, engineers, scientists, biologists, geologists, businesses, technical writers, nurses, farmers, teachers and professors, service professionals and all professionals in general. Anybody who is attempting to serve their community and themselves in general will need to weight the pros and cons of going to college.
I mean our minimum wage workers who are underemployed *need* to be on federal assistance. "The unemployment gap has decreased," they say. But it is because older citizens have to take jobs bc their insurance has been removed. But many of those jobs are part-time, meaning people are still underemployed.
Instead of raising the minimum wage, our federal assets are overburdened because people are unable to provide -- and do not start the "oh they would still be on assistance bc they're lazy" because I ASSURE you many people who take a job at Walmart is there because they want to be. The "American dream" so many lower and middle income students strive for will become the "Can I afford it" class. There are people who say things like "I don't know why so and so makes excuses for not taking out loans and justify it as a reason to not go to college". Upperclass students whose parents can afford to keep one parent at home, all the while receiving work-compensated health care while even being able to afford it out of pocket -- and send them to college out of pocket, buy them necessities and get them jobs will rule the professional world. Meanwhile they are trying to bring back industries which are unsustainable in America -- timber, steel, aluminum -- while also rendering sustainable power -- nuclear, solar, wind, hydro -- unable to operate.
There will soon be such a divide between classes because lower income people will be unable to adjust to the economic burdens. There is already such an insane class divide and a lot of people are unaware just how bad it is. Some upper class people have the weirdest names because it doesn't effect them.. look up "all star lacrosse names 2016" and you'll be like "Pilot Caring"? What the fuck. AND NOW the ability to literally genetically create your own child. There are geneticists who warn that there will be two species on human.
I mean what on earth is even happening. It blows my mind. I used to be so proud to be American. We are supposed to HELP our neighbors and countrymen. But it's clear it has never been that way, and it will continue to not be that way.

You're very busy at some times and very slow at others. You're expected to stay longer and get your work done when you're busy, and you're also expected to sit in the office for 40 hours a week when you're really slow. I find this so sad. 30 years ago in England I got 9 months full pay and 3 months part pay. 30 fucking years ago. No one should have to go to work until they have finished breast feeding. America is a horrid place.

As an American, I fully admit that we are a VERY BACKWORDSASS COUNTRY! You don't have to be a "liberal" to agree that parents, particularly mothers, shouldn't have to choose between their kids or their jobs in this day and age. It frustrates me to no end when people say that they want to support the idea of the nuclear family, but at the same time, don't support policies that could make that possible FOR ORDINARY PEOPLE. Calling it an " entitlement" is wrong on so many levels. You bet your ass that mother is "entitled" to a few months at home with her baby and not worry if she'll even be able to continue to support her household financially. Gone are the days when all women were stay at home moms. EVERYTHING IS TOO F****** EXPENSIVE TO LIVE LIKE THAT NOW! The REAL reason my generation will have so few children is because their are NO INCENTIVES TO HAVE ANY! Why have them when that decision may destroy your financial future? Why should a woman in this age have to sacrifice EVERYTHING she had spent so long building in her career? Why should only ONE PERSON be financially responsible for an ENTIRE FAMILY? It has been PROVEN time and again by EVERY OTHER COUNTRY ON FACE OF THE EARTH that IT IS POSSIBLE FOR FAMILIES TO HAVE BOTH! And I'm sick and tired of the same old arguments parroted out by people who have NO IDEA WHAT IT'S LIKE FOR AVERAGE PEOPLE TO SUPPORT A FAMILY!

People often blur the lines between "asking for handouts" and asking for genuine and needed help. Nobody gives a shit about a parent or the babies after the child is born. And until parents get leave by law, I'll believe all pro lifers are giant hypocrites. I hate how america has become so goddamn ignorant to those who aren't born into money and who struggle. It's just like a room of men deciding whether birth control is beneficial for them or not. Yet, birth control would control the population, let wouldbe deadbeat fathers never become a father and those who can't afford a kid, never have to. It's so fucking stupid. Oh, let's make it a law that you have to go to school, and if you don't we'll throw you into jail (yes, that happens on the becca bill). And the education you get, will be completely meaningless after the fact. And yet we all wonder why the depression and suicide rate is so high for teens and YA. I refuse to have a kid. Especially in the us.

Parents SHOULD have to choose. The answer is to work, save, and THEN have children when you are able to. Not create life whithout having the means to even support it and then DEMAND that others help raise your family lol

My younger sister had to be put in childcare/daycare very early on as a baby since my parents unpaid leave ran out. Over the few weeks she was there she was abused daily by the other children and the caretakers knew, didn't do anything, and didn't tell us. A few weeks after my mom picked her up and noticed scratches all along her back and she was bleeding, when she questioned the daycare they just said "Well that wasn't us." We were lucky that my grandma had just recently retired around that time and she took the role to care for my sister.

this is why i cant put my son in child care we switched three fucking times. It pisses me of thinking of what i did I apologize for the the language, We had an in care sitter and two different daycare's. It was horrible. My son is in therapy sessions now. The word through the early intervention program was : They do not care about teaching your child... they rather receive a check and have him sit in a high chair. If that's the case I rather stay home with him. i want so bad for him to interact with other children Im petrified I dont trust any one. Imagine leaving for the daycare center getting their to find out every one left and your baby is alone or shes not their on time so your written up at work or how about your leaving for work the sitter sits on her phone and the baby nearly falls off the damn couch. Unbelievable. I nearly killed everyone.

That sounds horrible. I work in a nursery in Germany (from 10 months to 3 years). I love my work and I'm glad that I can work in what's the most fun, enriching and one of the most important jobs for me. Still I firmly believe that families should have the possibility to spend as much time as possible with their children. It's precious and you can never get that time back. It saddens me when I hear reports of mistreatment of our biggest treasure as a society by professionals. It's a shame. We should never underestimate the influence we have on the lives of these children.

Maybe one of the reasons many Americans are so opposed to greater taxes is that they don't see the benefits for themselves, as a great amount of the taxes go to cooperate subsidies.

MonsterKat exactly. I pay so much in taxes (about 30% of my paycheck) and live paycheck to paycheck, but yet I make “too much money” to benefit from any of the taxes I pay in. If I’m going to be paying taxes, I better be able to benefit from it as well.

In NB Canada if you go to your Family Doc and say you have low/no income they will offer you "Compassionate Pricing" for Birth Control pills or the Patch making a 3 month supply only $10 full price would be $90.

It's sad our society doesn't value family and children more like the other countries do. Im a stay at home mom by choice my husband works full time. He took 1 week off unpaid when we had our 4 kids. When my babies turned 6 weeks old I always cried with gratitude that I've never had to deal with the pain of leaving my child. My heart goes out to the woman who have no other choice. And I will say I have a much much greater bond and connection with my kids then my husband that works 12 hours a day.

OMG, that video got me really worried! I'm from Canada and when I saw the 17 weeks leave, I was like: "What the hell? Wasn't it a year??" Went online to read about it and yes we only have about 18 weeks (not 17, a least in Quebec), but we also have another 32 weeks of parental leave! That should have been mentionned in the documentary. So, almost a year (50 weeks).

I can’t imagine this mother’s pain. Even if it wasn’t the daycare’s fault and let’s say it was SIDS so it could have even happened while home with her I am sure she blames herself everyday cause she probably thinks if he was home with her she could have caught it earlier and did something faster to save him. It has to be heartbreaking to be so excited to see your baby and to get there to him dying/dead and knowing you weren’t with him in his last moments. My heart is crushed for her. It makes me so terrified of eventually putting my baby in daycare.
