The guy who was showing you around tried to bargain with the barber on the price to be ksh. 200 (2 dollars) claiming that you are 'his person' which in Swahili is 'mtu wangu' because you chew khat together; but the barber did not accept. The barber instead charged you ksh. 500 (5 dollars) which in Kenya we say, 'umegongwa' (overcharged). BTW, that's my hometown.

The guy who tried to bargain for Kurt to get a cheaper haircut is my bro and it's typical of him to be generous sometimes to a fault... When I read a few mean comments about him regardless true or false it's deflating as clearly he's unwell mentally and all I ask is for people to pray for him to get well Insha'Allah... I have become quite intrigued, more so lately, than before with your travels and how you go about carrying the camera and managing to document your experiences as well as any other channels that do similar productions. On a slightly different note, I find your personality and perspectives very well articulated. I believe if I were to change my way of life then I could see myself in you a bit. When I was clean and sober, in recovery, I would keep my haircut and dress up, and my love for beautiful beaches, jungles, and foreign things(woman included, coca possibly, lol, cigars, foods) to be similar in taste. Funny too how much I appreciate a quality set of clippers and your Manscape ads actually make me assured you wouldn't promote a product you don't use yourself. Thanks too for sharing your personal struggles with depression on a separate video. That really shows that even though your not too afraid to visit dangerous places and come off as a tough guy sometimes, you also show that you have same struggles as many men and woman worldwide and you view yourself as an equal everywhere you go. Appreciate the honesty in your views and street smart sense when people are not what they appear sometimes and being careful of scammers, thieves, criminals, and cons. Great job.

Man, that video brought back the memories for me. Spent quite a lot of time in Mombasa back in the early 90's when I was in the Army in Mogadishu and we would do R&R in Mombasa. I have nothing but warm memories for the people of Kenya. As a white guy staying in the village of Bombalulu, I was treated as though I had lived there my whole life. Such an amazing experience. I would tell Kurt that everything in Mombasa is negotiable when it comes to price.

Sorry Mombasa was not discovered by Portuguese. Mombasa was founded by two rulers: Mwana Mkisi and Shehe Mvita. More likely the city was founded by Arab traders who settled there as they did in other cities along the Indian Ocean coast of East Africa. Those early Arab settlers intermarried with local people, creating the Muslim-dominated culture in the city.
Kenyan historians place the founding of Mombasa as around 900 A.D. The town was prosperous enough to be described by the Arab geographer Al Idrisi, who mentioned it in his writings in 1151, and by the Moroccan traveler Ibn Battuta, who visited it in 1331. During this period Mombasa emerged as an important trade center with links to Yemen, India, Persia, and China with spices, gold, and ivory as its chief exports.
In 1498 Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama became the first known European to reach Mombasa. His visit awakened Portuguese interest in the city. Two years later the Portuguese returned to sack the city. The Portuguese finally captured Mombasa in 1593, building Fort Jesus to ensure their rule. Mombasa became Portugal’s main trading center on the East African coast.
