This also leads to the occasional focus hunting the camera does when switching quickly from your face to something in your hand. An aperture in the 4 range will still separate you from a busy background, but will help keep your nearby area in focus; which is more pleasing to the eye. In addition, due to the slightly larger depth of field, your camera will have an easier time with autofocus when you really need it.
