Purchased this game months ago, got to level 52 and completed the main game, side quests and dlc's within a week or so. Not one penny spent on any microtransaction and didn't take me long to get to 50. Odyssey is a great game and although the microtransactions shouldn't exist, people are exaggerating. Getting to the end game in this isn't better or worse than any other action adventure game and I've played plenty of them.
Some games are good enough to be let off because the pro's outweigh the cons. Take RDR2 for example. About 10 editions with various exclusive content and a multiplayer that has been filled to the brim with microtransactions but you know what? The actual main game is a masterpiece so it's worth the purchase. If you limit your modern game library to games that don't have purchasables at all then you are missing out on some great games. Some games aren't even good enough to be let off because the rest of the content is shit but there's rare exceptions to the rule. RDR2 and Odyssey are two examples of those rare exceptions.

TerranMarineCore we don’t ‘want it now without doing anything to deserve it’ we want the same opportunities our parents and grandparents had. That’s it. In 1940 the chance of someone earning more then their parents was 91%. In 2018 that number went down to 50%. In the 70’s the wage of workers stopped growing with both the growth and success of companies, as well as inflation. Instead of increasing wages, the top 1% where increasing their sales. The wage gap between generations is the largest it’s been in American history. The majority of millennials will NEVER own a house. All we want is to not live in poverty. To not be wage slaves living paycheck to paycheck.

I have to disagree with you here Mack. I don't think just not buying helix points will be enough to make it go away. They will just make the grind worse next time to better incentivize you to "save time" by giving them money. The only way to get rid of this stuff is an outright boycott of this type of monetization, and not buying games that feature this type of "time saving" feature.
A full priced triple A single player game with free to play style micro-transactions included should not be endorsed or supported by people who like games.

And you're right, they wouldn't put those microtransactions there if they didn't want people to buy them. Ignoring them will only make publishers push that "player choice" further and further to the point where it's impossible to ignore since they'll keeping prodding for dosh. Just a solid reason why I'm so worried about Devil May Cry 5 having this crap from the get go.

I whole-heartedly agree with this. They should branch out with a different series with this new formula, not with AC. I stopped following AC after Revelations, but every now and then I check in on the series -- (To be honest I'm waiting til they make an actual AC game taking place in Japan) -- seeing AC now, I'm kinda wanting to stay even further away because this. Isn't. AC. This is a generic RPG now. I just don't think RPG style suits AC. I find it to be a conflict of formula and what they made AC feel like originally. But it doesn't seem "bad," just not AC. And I don't even wanna start on microtransaction-driven shit for leveling and such. "Time-savers," fuck yourself Ubisoft, as if there's no way around the fucking intentional design other than paying one's way through it.

@@CommanderAkio I stopped playing the game series after Syndicate because I didn't think the Egyptian stuff would be good. When Odyssey came out I waited and tried it and I don't think it is good because there is no assassin's in the game. Recently I've tried Origins and so far I think it is good. It is nice to see where the assassin's creed was founded and that is what is keeping me playing the game.

Honestly imo this game is the best in the Assasin's Creed in the series, now it's been a while since I've played most of them except for maybe Origins so I don't completely remember the earlier games and how I enjoyed those but the gameplay style and the open world of this game is the best AC has ever been.

    • @Jaime_Protein_Cannister
      @Jaime_Protein_Cannister 4 года назад +3

@@CommanderAkio Not sure what you mean by "this isn't AC" , this is more AC than any ac in a long while, you just need to spec into Assassination and you have a much better experience than AC 1,2,3,4,5 ... etc etc you have the OPTION to play a warrior , but in fact Assassin is the best option, because only assassin can take out entire Fortresses without triggering an alarm. The stealth is also much more difficult , because locations become packed with enemies , some forts have 30-40 enemies and it takes a bit of planning to do it safely. No other AC game required this amount of preparation. Hunter is good , but does not have the DMG necessary to kill everyone , Hunter can stealthily take out the weaker foes mostly and you run out of adrenaline real quick.
Ever since AC 1 as a veteran of Stealth games, there hasn't been even a single moment for me that was even vaguely challenging. I can speedrun Tenchu , Thief etc games like it's nothing , let alone AC, but with the addition of gear at least I have to be weary of damage and the order in which I take out the enemies.
This is a HUGE step up from what the franchise used to be.... a completely skill-less slaughter.
The gear is a NON-ISSUE you get some of the best gear early on and later you hunt down a couple of cult members for their LEGENDARY set , which is a fun activity. Sometimes it's not straightforward to find those people, only when you complete certain quests or gather intel by chance do you get to know their location. Which adds An authentic feeling of being on the hunt.
Once you obtain decen set for your role , you update it's level every (raiste the level of your equipped set), this way you never fall behind in terms of gear.
There is no need to farm materials , you will have plenty of everything if you scrap the crap , you get all the wood in the world from sinking ships , everything else comes easily if you just have fun exploring the world.
The story after 1st AC quickly got messy , this AC doesn't concern itself with abstergo too too much and let's you skip most of the boring BS modern day stuff, you continue to explore the ancient world. It's super story rich and unlike what mac has stated the sidequests aren't boring , they are kinda boring INITIALLY , once you get to athens, that starts to change. The end game content is AMAZING , unlike the old shitty puzzles that required you to collect things mindlessly , you go on mini quests to find and to fight legendary beasts. First the artemis quest, later the Medusa Cyclops Sphinx Minotaur encounters.
It has more meaningful content this than any other AC. From 1st one until a couple of recent ones, the problem with AC was that parkour was forced for no reason there are multiple reasons to explore and to do parkour.

Remember in the first assassins creed where each assassination was followed up with an epic, intimate interaction with the target that slowly unwound a mysterious, intriguing story?
And then instantly you are thrown back into the bleak world with all the guards after you? You have to run for your life and escape. There was a genuine rush of adrenaline and the thought, “What is the quickest way out of here? Where can I make my escape?” Scaling rooftops in a full out sprint to elude your hunters.
That will always be Assasins Creed to me. That is the feeling I wish was replicated and innovated upon.
I don’t want a massive grind with a million different pointless armor pieces and weapons. I don’t want health bars and assassination quests with no real connections to the targets. I want to feel like a legendary assassin, unraveling the epic lore of the first civilization and my characters place in all of it.
This game looks like a solid RPG, but it’s not Assassins Creed to me.

People just look at the numbers in March of 2018 Ubisoft made €318.5 million from what it calls Player Recurring Investment during the last nine months. Basically micro-transactions. It is a very lucrative source of revenue making up 26.7% of total sales. So they are not going to stop because there are enough idiots buying that stuff 300 million euros worth of idiots.

Good game but as commented the business model is awful. It looks like this is the first game, at least AC game, that the micros are being really pushed hard. While I haven't like Ubi since Unity, when they pulled the review embargo bollocks, you can generally say that Micros are hard to spot and easy to ignore. In Odessy however the economy and XP requirement have been influenced by the desire to sell Micros.
Also you can typically see how hard a game is pushing micros by its storefront and how often its alluded to in game.

I bought this game based off Mack's review and I gotta be honest, I liked origins better, by a great deal.
I felt origins was more structured, and was a solid open world game in it's own right, if a bit shallow.
Odyssey isn't bad, it's just an assault on the eyes. Not that it doesn't look good, because it can be damn near jaw dropping at times, I mean there's way too many things going on. There's so many icons on your compass, way too many HUD elements (that you can turn off but still) and the game world is so detailed that it's hard to take everything in because the game is so cluttered and fast paced.
It's like that guy in Amadeus that says "the ear can only hear so many notes" and that's how I feel with Odyssey, the eye can only process so much detail.
For me, Odyssey is a bit too ridiculous and historically inaccurate all around for me to really enjoy it. Too fast paced, too cluttered, combat is way too cartoony and overall the game is just bleh.

Adam Etherton its particularly interesting because the combat in this is exactly like Witcher 3, dodge, dodge, spam attack, dodge, attack. 7:31 paints the perfect picture, yet TW3 is really bad because of it, and this is spectacular. Witcher III was not the best game ever, especially the COMBAT was weird sometimes and I remember Mack thumbed it down because of that. Well thumbing THIS up makes no sense, the combat is worst in every aspect. And you are not telling me the open world, story, the sidequests, the characters....etc. are better than the witcher????? I'm 28 hours in this game and I feel you are loosing it a bit Mack. It's not a bad game overall but honestly I is just the same big lifeless open world for just grinding your ass off. This games are getting even worst because of the microtransactions. They are making the grind SO ANNOYING that at some point people will pay money or just like me STOP PLAYING IT! Unpopular opinion, but the new gameplay revamp since Origin really takes me away from the experience. Not a big fan of rag doll animation or how enemies could take a ton of damage when they have things that could barely qualify as armor. Really like the sound of the story and the extra features, so I’m conflicted. Think I’ll get it on sale or when the price lowers. Love the review though and completely like how you go into details about the pros and cons, and the pros really seem to be good, but like I said earlier, I don’t typically play titles with this type of gameplay, but it’s tempting just to get if for the story.

This game should be a thumbs down regardless of how good it is. I've been gaming for as long as, if not longer than you Mack and to see the decline of the games industry to such a stage where £50 - £60 per game isn't enough for a company; that they then need to fill their coffers even more is heartbreaking.

Reviews like this - and the vast majority of the fans who give it a Like because they endorse the philosophy behind it - are the reason why the cancer of microtransactions will never go away.
Saying "buy the game but just not the MTs" is an ineffective half-measure that will just encourage them always to make more MT-filled games.
The only real way to stop MTs is to boycott 100% all games that have them. But no reviewers will be bold enough to take that position (not even mack...who is the only video gamer reviewer I like and one of a small handful who is *not* a sellout to & shill for big publishers), and most gamers aren't willing to do that either, so therefore they will keep getting MTs forever.

75 milions of bad comments about grind and microtransactions. Okay i am 65 hours in the game now, lvl 40 and in 3rd chapter of the story. Done TWO side timed quests on first island just out of curiosity. Got to say that, i am very far from being a fanboy, got fkd by ubisoft with the division, and prev assassin games. But this one, they give huge map to explore, go out there and visit places, explore and enjoy the world, do sidequests with yellow marks, dont grind them, do ocasionaly if you curious of side stories, because they have stories and some historical characters in them. AVOID generic grind shity quests which are timed, just play the game, enjoy battles and sneaky clearing forts. Never ever give them extra money for extra XP and items, its absolutely useless if you a gamer and you enjoy an amazing well made game, you will never need that. If you explore, fight bounty hunters, do some side story quests, kill captains in places etc, you will be never underequiped or underleveled. But if you are sunday rush go trough game player and want to rush trough the story, you will hit a lvl wall that game have. Plus 3 lvls enemies are a problem, higher ones are prety much impossible. BUT you got story to do, cult to hunt, places to visit, ships to sing, temples to loot, side stories to experience, beautiful huge world to explore, animals to hunt, epic heroes or characters to quest with, find and face them. This game do not need ANY grind or microtransactions, just play it, enjoy whats in there and you will be fine with gear and lvl to go with your story.

A gorgeous mess of ideas and pointless busy-work (I can't possibly call them quests). The combat is rigged. Opponents can spike randomly in difficulty -- at some point during my play-through, mercenaries started healing back to full. Despite them being the same level as my character, I couldn't beat them after hours-long grueling fights and endless dodges. I then figured that this is the way Ubisoft "nudges" players toward buying their boosters. I uninstalled it. It will be my last Ubisoft game I ever purchased.

The "grind" didn't feel like a grind in Origins and I had no issue with it. In fact, finally side quests don't feel like a useless endeavor.

I did all of the quests I came across in Origins simply because of how fun the gameplay was. I can't think of many RPGs where side quests are that good, and gameplay usually kinda sucks in them anyways, so the fact that the gameplay formula is pretty fun in Origins makes them playable enough.

This Is My Name Witcher 3’s side quests are MUCH better than AC’s side quests, they actually have compelling stories while ac’s side quests are just fetch quests and tedious tasks, Odyssey’s main quest though is really good because of it’s story and dialogue choices, much better than trash Origins lol

I had problems with AC since the first game where you had common thugs and lowly soldiers parkouring around like trained assassins which killed the whole assassin theme for me (and none of that changed to this day), but at least the stealth was somewhat reminiscent of an assassin.
The new games have thrown this completely out of the window in favor of hack&slash, which wouldn't be such a problem but my god the fking sponge enemies...just looking at this crap where you slash and slash an enemy to take 10% of its health down makes me wanna puke.

How can you give this game a positive review and trash on the Witcher 3? The Witcher 3 is ten times the game Odyssey is. Every side quest and every detail of the game has so much love and effort put into it. Odyssey is a lazy excuse of a video game. The main story is decent but the grinding and the terrible side quests bog it down significantly. I couldn't even finish the game because the grind was so bad.

No , Witcher 3 is 100% clunky, from camera angles, to how close the camera is to the character, to combat ,menus and controls. Unplayable on PC
The only thing that is good about that game gameplay-wise is the story.
So I come to conclusion that I'd rather read a book of Witcher 3, rather than play a game of Witcher 3.
Odyssey doesn't have a single one of these problems.

I just finished the game and in my honest opinion the microtransactions didn't matter at all.
You can get exp quite easy and the main quests are rewarding. The side content adds to diversity.
I think people jump on the same train and say "its grindy, so you have to buy stuff etc"
I finished the game in about 50 hours in and got to level 44.
Than you are done and can do the extra stuff, like beating the cult or becoming rank 1 soldier and side quests.
And 50 hours to finish the main quests without needing any boosts is completely fine. Since when did this become a grind?
When i was younger there were games like Final Fantasy 7 who took you easy 80 hours to complete and explore.
If you can't enjoy games any more and wanna run over the content, then you buy those boosts - but they aren't necessary at all.
This is my honest experience. The game overall is pretty decent, nice game to chill after work.

Not only have I never paid for a single loot box / micro transaction in a Ubisoft game, but in the rare years when I wanted a game of theirs I wait until it drops in half the price, as I don’t like gruidy games and need to make back the money I’ll have to pay to get on with the story.

  • @sighange
    @sighange 5 лет назад +6

Interesting review. I’m playing this game and I’m currently around lvl 40. I can’t really agree with why do people complain about micro transactions. Games like this are made to be long!!! That whole map is full of areas to explore and stuff (more or less interesting) to do. It’s understandable that people don’t have time and just want to rush through the game... then yeah, they have the option to pay for that. I never even thought about buying a “time saver” because I always enjoyed leveling. I remember back in the days on some old final fantasy games where I had to grind to go and defeat a boss, and I enjoyed because I got to get a long return on my investment! There was no “time saver”... now we pay quite a price but we get long games to satisfy our investment with included options for people “in hurry”, yet, we still complain!!! Come on guys!!!
It would make sense If it was like on mobile games where they literally “lock you”: you can’t really grind, you only have to pay to move forwards

  • @roller12coaster

There are plenty of good side quests that'll keep you entertained besides the main questlines. I'm around level 40, and I haven't experienced any grinding at all, and I haven't bought any microtransactions.
Really depends on what kind of player you are, but for people who like to take it slow and explore, it's not mandatory to grind at all.

Ubi are typically great in building huge and beautiful open worlds, no doubt about that. What they struggle with is filling that space with equally compelling side content and a truly reactive world. Just look at RDR2 as a comparison, the skinned animal meat from a hunt actually turns bad with time, rendering it inedible or having a poor trade value. It is this kind of level of fine detail that Ubi frequently neglects and that is why their games are tend to be cookie cutter affairs with just incremental improvements for each installment.
